Junly 15, 2013

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------


     7/20: An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was found in the afternoon at 
Knox-Marsellus Pool. It was seen briefly the next morning (7/21) and then took 
off and flew in a southerly direction.
     7/21: Migrant Shorebirds showed up for the first day this summer in good 
numbers at Knox-Marsellus Pool. In all 8 species were found. Highlights 
included 1 WILSON’S PHALAROPE,  a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, 16 STILT SANDPIPERS, 16 
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and many hundreds of GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 
SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPERS. Other good finds were 2 SANDHILL CRANES, 8 
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, BLACK TERNS and a rare for upstate juvenile LITTLE 
BLUE HERON in with a large group of GREAT EGRETS. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was 
again seen on Mays Point Road past the viewing area in the dead trees.


Onondaga County
------------

     7/18: 2 first year and one adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen 
along the creekwalk near Bear Street in Syracuse.
     7/20: A juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK was again seen between Crooked lake and 
Gatehouse Pond near Tully.


Oneida County
------------

     7/21: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was again seen at Verona Beach State Park.


Herkimer County
------------

     7/21: 2 WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard in the Town of Salisbury near Rt.29.
