Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 

September 19, 2022

This was a good week for migrating Warblers, Vireos and Thrushes. Keep your 
eyes and ears open. It will end soon.










Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)

     9/20: A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was found on Howland Island.

     9/24: A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was seen from East Road.

     9/25: BLACK-BELLIED and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER were seen along the 
Wildlife Drive. A CACKLING GOOSE and 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen from East 
Road . The Godwits were seen again today.







Onondaga County

     9/19: A BLACK VULTURE and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER were both seen near 
the Dewitt Quarry.

     9/20: An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen at Green Lakes State Park. A 
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen at Hancock Airport.

     9/21: A CACKLING GOOSE was seen at Oneida Shores Parkin Brewerton.

     9/22: 3 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES were heard fron Jamesville Road in Syracuse.

     9/23: A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen at Three Rivers WMA north of 
Baldwinsville.

     9/24: GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES were found at the West Shore Trail of Onondaga 
Lake and at Three Rivers WMA. An early LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen at Jamesville  
Beach County Park.

     9/25: SWAINSON’S and GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES were found at Three Rivers WMA. 







Oswego County

     9/21: A BLACK VULTURE was seen near the Walmart in Fulton. 8Shorebird 
species including BLACK-BELLIED and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were seen at the 
Sandy Pond Outlet on Lake Ontario.

     9/22: 6 PARASITIC JAEGERS and a LAUGHING GULL were seen from the bluff at 
Derby Hill on Lake Ontario. A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen at a home on Baum 
Road north of Central Square. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen on West Lake 
Road south of Oswego.

     9/24: An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen near a home on Hinman Road north 
of Pulaski.

     9/25: An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen from Co. Rt. 24 in Minetto. A 
HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen with BLACK-BELLIED and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER at the 
Sandy Pond Outlet. The Godwit was present again today.







Oneida County

------------




     9/19: A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen at Spring Farm Nature Sanctuary 
south of clinton.

     9/23: 2 BLACK VULTURES continue at and abandoned barn on Rt. 46 south of 
Rome.
