What about using something like this instead:
$ ping6 -I usb0 ff02::1

And you'll get the reply from the connected device, then you can use
its link-local address, e.g. if it was running ssh:
$ ssh root@fe80::747f:b5ff:fec0:7dc9%usb0

Well, if it's too much of a hassle, then implementing SLAAC by making
MCU constantly send RAs seems to be easier and handier than a DHCP
server.
