I guess I was whining about the past decision that resulted in the
current state of affairs. I strongly wish that PSARC had exercised its
power to effect a different outcome in the past.
In the future, I'd love to be able to create a minimal install _without_
perl. I'm not sure that this is achievable with the current set of
dependencies, but I would greatly prefer to see such dependencies
reduced, rather than increased.
As a 38MB package, perl contributes a great deal to the increase in the
size of the "minimal install".
(Note that for 5.6.1 it was "only" 19MB.)
