hmm, i think this is wrong.
rectangle is enabled by default on osx, but not on the other platforms
(cannot remember why now; but i guess it made some problems)

with rectangle textures your texcoords should be 0..width-1 and
0..height-1 (rather than 0,,1); don't ask me why; i think it's one of
the more stupid decisions of the ARB.

you don't have problems because Gem tries to take care of everything.
with shaders you somehow circumvent Gem's trickery, so it you have to
manually take care.
