JCO, the current crop of 35mm film scanners (4000 dpi) is, by and large, adequate for most uses. With all but the less grainy films this is enough to make visible the grain structure. I doubt higher resoltion could get much more information from the average film. I had a few 20x28" prints made from Provia 100F scanned at 4000 dpi and they looked fine except for the horrible color shift.
