Yeah.

Last time I had to travel uberlight was flying to New York for the bike 
messenger world championships in 2005. My bike was the only luggage I could 
check to everything else had to go into my messenger bag as carry on. 

I took my Leica CL with f2.0 40mm Summicron. That was it. One focal length.

However did I survive?

Gotta say though, I was pretty happy with the pix I came home with...

That being said, were I John, I think I'd take one body and one, maximum two 
zooms. I suppose the kit 18-55 plus the 55-300 would cover a sufficiently wide 
range.
