we (a group of five or six friends from many parts of india) used to organise the earlier simpler treks ourselves. on one such trek we met a 'guide', a person from the area who know the trails inside out. now he organises the treks for us: arranges the mules, the cook, ration etc., for a reasonable fee...he doesn't run a formal company, it's just an informal arrangement. but it works.
