Looks like the target market is photographers who use sling straps that attach to the tripod socket on the bottom of a camera. One problem with those is you have to disconnect the strap to put the camera on a tripod.

My Sun-Sniper strap clips on to the ring for a Manfrotto RC2 adapter, but I still have to UN-clip to mount the camera on a tripod.

This looks like it will allow you to mount to the tripod without having to remove the strap. I'd have to replace all my Manfrotto mounts with Arca Swiss, but I think I'm kinda headed that way anyway.

Looks like they made their goal (more than made their goal - about 4.5x so far).

Noting that "Rewards aren't guaranteed", I wonder when it will be available to just buy one retail?

I looked at that project. The neat part of the base plate is that it takes the
load off the standard lugs (not designed for that kind of carry) and puts the
load at the base which allows the camera to lay flat more reliably.

It's primarily targeted to work with an SLR or largish EVF camera's shape and
largish lenses. It would be mostly useless with the different form factor and
relatively small/light lenses of a Leica M, for instance.

I use the Peak Design Leash strap, which max out at about 145cm (57 inches)
(plus a couple cm for the anchor bits). It's light, very strong, and easy to
use cross body, as well as easily length adjustable to suit your body and
preferences. It can be taken on and off a camera in a couple of seconds. A nice
strap!

I've always carried my cameras like that ...
you just need a longer than normal strap, no fancy base bracket.
Also use an ancient Galen Rowell chest pouch
as a waist pack to secure same setup at my side when not scrambling.

(though I would love to find a good source for long straps,
mine I found in a drugstore in Williansport, PA in late '80s,
bought out their stock when I went back a year later,
never found a better strap sinc, though I have shopped)
