Just a thought but id there no way to make the current character length limit the base directory and add the others as an extra layer ? After all the current sub-directories are all 'soft' so old applications would have to use soft sub-directories and stick to the current limits and newer ones could use eh new directory structures if they want. Not sure how this would work but didn't Nasta propose something similar?
