I've developed a habit of recommending Mercurial for people with an allergy to Git who would nevertheless like to use something more modern than Subversion -- and some Git users also find Mercurial more amenable as a second VCS than they do Subversion. (I enjoy Mercurial and, like you, have never really got on with Git.) In this case, if I read it right, the problem wasn't so much the choice of version control system as the fact that two different ones (any two) were in use? Or is the root problem just that we didn't automate rebuilding the data bundle?
