OK, I just realized that I may have been thinking about the wrong bug. 
Just to confirm that I'm on the same page as you now, it's:

 * Not the DSSI bug
 * Not about percussion
 * The bug where fixed will play and auto won't.

There is one thing I want to clarify about your setup, Ted: Are you using
Alsa?  There should be a line in Makefile cotaining -DHAVE_ALSA, like:

  "CXXFLAGS [... -DHAVE_LIBJACK] -DHAVE_ALSA [ -DHAVE_LIBSNDFILE ...]"

If not, that could explain it.  I wasn't aware that RG was even able to
work without Alsa.  If so, then I need to make other drivers get the
channel from MappedEvent.  If not, I'm not sure it makes sense to look
further at the driver end or past that at interaction with fluidsynth,
since aside from that it treats channel the same as it always did.
