We still assume that as a universal baseline. This other stuff is over and
above and beside that.

What have you got? I've found everything that's capable of using .sf2
soundfonts is capable of using this bank switch to utilize extra percussion
channels. I discovered this quite to my surprise, but it seems to hold true
everywhere.

As far as compatibility goes, that's what doing a device definition for your
particular setup is all about. This bank change stuff doesn't work on my
usual Roland either. That's why I don't have the XG/GM2-style extra
percussion stuff defined in my personal default studio, why none of this stuff
I'm testing would ever work with my normal setup, and why I'm testing with
QSynth.

It should be quite possible to support it where it works without affecting
anywhere it doesn't.

In fact, as I said in my most recent comments, it seems to be working
satisfactorily right like it is. I saw what I was looking for in terms of
behavior, and unless I discover some new wrinkle, I don't think you have any
more work to do in this particular area anyway.

Working on the surface is working, regardless of how you're managing it
underneath. I'm not saying I won't discover that new wrinkle tomorrow, but so
far, so good.
