I manage (in the loosest sense) a forum at
http://vamp-plugins.org/forum, where I never find the time to reply to
anything either. It has all registrations needing admin approval, and
everyone has to fill in a line saying why they want to register, to be
checked by the admin, as well as doing a captcha.

It gets at least a 100:1 ratio of spammers to real humans registering.
Most of the spammers will just put "xyz" or something in the "why are
you interested in this forum" field, but you do get some creative
efforts as well. There was at one point a spate of people entering
"For help human", which makes me think they might be closer to the
nearest star already than perhaps we know.
