I have a vague memory of trying to untangle exactly this puzzle once
upon a time. A staff points at a segment points at an event, but there
is nothing pointing in the other direction. The closer to the base
layer you go, the more limited that object's knowledge of where it sits
in the scheme of things.

I seem to recall what I ended up trying to do was some huge kludge where
I iterated through everything from the top down, asking to see if it
contained the target event. Iterate through all the staffs, then for
each staff iterate through all the segments, then for each segment see
if it contains this event.

I'm not sure if I ever actually got it to work or not, and I don't
remember what any of this was about. Maybe I got it to work, maybe
somebody saw me struggling and offered a brighter idea, but scratching
deep in the dust of my long ago memory, I think I gave up on this in
frustration, and whatever I was trying to do never got accomplished.

I wish I could offer more, but this was all so long ago. I'm something
like 95% retired now, and just barely here.
