[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker
I was stunned to look out my window a few minutes ago to see a brilliant male RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in my yard at the bottom of Culver Road (southwest town of Ithaca). The bird landed first on a small sunflower seed feeder where two brilliant male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were feeding. I was busy appreciating the black/white/red spring extravaganza (and the sunshine) when it intensified as the woodpecker flew to the feeder, then to a branch of the big maple above, appeared to cache a piece of suet, then disappeared to the east. I haven't been able to refind the bird as of this writing. This isn't far from where, last year (?) someone reported a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at Old Hundred at the corner of Bostwick Rd. and Five Mile Dr. Lisa Wood Ithaca -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Dodge Road, Th 5/5
On Thursday morning, having found nothing at all unusual on a quick circuit of the Wilson Trail in Sapsucker Woods, I decided to visit the Dodge Road spruce plantation. Today's birding confirmed my sense that this is the best place in the area for sojourning migrants waiting out headwinds. Along the east-facing edge, I found Tom and Ruth Nix, as well as a prodigious mixed flock. * 1 silent male BAY-BREASTED WARBLER seen momentarily but clearly and conclusively * 1 male CAPE MAY WARBLER, incessantly singing for the first five minutes after my arrival, confirmed by sight, but not heard or seen afterward * 1 PRAIRIE WARBLER that I heard singing dozens of times but failed to see, despite much effort * 3+ PALM WARBLERS * 1 singing BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, just barely seen * 50+ YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS -- very conspicuous, unlike all the other warbler species * 2+ YELLOW WARBLERS * 3+ NASHVILLE WARBLERS * 1 silent male BLUE-WINGED WARBLER * 1 female or subadult AMERICAN REDSTART Tom and Ruth also found a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER that I failed to detect conclusively. Viewing was very difficult because of the steep sight angles and the dense spruce branches. Many other birds were also here along the edge, including an EASTERN KINGBIRD, a few RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW singing across the road in the brush. Re: [cayugabirds-l] juv. LITTLE BLUE HERON (I think) Sapsucker Woods just west northwest of Owens platform (white barn pond)!
The bird was seen a few more times by various observers, first closer to Rt. 13 and then along the south side of the pond, in the wooded area, where it is likely still hanging out (although difficult to see from the building area.) It is definitely a juvenile LITTLE BLUE HERON as Wes suspected. It is mostly white with some blue in the wingtips and a slight bluish tinge to the head. [cayugabirds-l] 3 Orchard Orioles Myers
Three ORCHARD ORIOLES singing in the sun today 7:30 am at Myers, two in same places as reported by David Nicosia yesterday: one in trees by the first house on left at the RR crossing to the park, and one on Salt Point (north side of the creek) straight along the road after the RR. The third was at the extreme north on Salt Point, I could hear the two singing at once. Could the other one from the park entrance have come over there- don't know, but it was in the same place both before and after I saw/heard the two on Salt Point, so I doubt it.
