I'm not sure if additional information is sent from NT (without an initial client message); a DHCP service may operate this way (?). I'm wondering if Linux/ipmasq can assign the 137-139 ports for each of the internal client machines as other ports of the Linux box and communicate to the external machines as if multiple copies of samba were running on the same machine. Probably the best way to do it is to add your user to the group 'dip', with a command like adduser fred dip. You may also need to change the owner of /etc/ppp, /etc/ppp/peers, /etc/peers/provider, /etc/chatscripts, and /etc/chatscripts/provider if the installation set these up wrong (all should be owned by group dip, not group root). Then, your user should be able to activate the connection.

The Adaptec configuration program correctly recognises all the devices, and the system runs fine 99% of the time. However, when the system is under heavy disk usage, it sometimes suddenly cold reboots, eg: today while gunzipping a large .gz archive on the Barracuda drive the system rebooted. similar examples include copying large files from Windows/Samba clients to the server, and copying 3-4 gigabytes of files from the Barracuda to the Viking, using the unix 'cp' command. We have checked all the termination, and log files. Physical termination all appears to be correct, and there are no clues in the log files...the system simply cold reboots without leaving any error messages. Has anybody ever experienced these symptoms? Could it be due to a bug in the 2.0.36 kernel, or is it more likely an undetected hardware issue? Bad termination should not be able to make the system reboot. You might want to try the 2.0.37 kernel and put newer aic7xxx drivers for the Adaptec card. You can find the drivers from the url's mentioned in the readme file which is in the kernel sources. Hello and thanks a million to those who have responded to my request for taking some of your precious time to help me out. I downloaded wvdial and minicom like some of you suggested and wvdial cannot find my modem. I sent a message to them like they suggested because I am 100% sure that my modem is in Com3. I thought the garbage test I was receiving when I typed pppd was a sign that the modem sent a signal. Although I never here the modem dialing out. Help: Package install in 2.0
I just installed Debian 2.0 using the CheapBytes disk. At the end of the install, Just before I was popped into deselect, I encountered a screen which I thought was going to allow me to pick what kind of system I wanted to install (eg Administration, Standard, Developer, etc) with little check boxes at the beginning of each possible choice, suggesting that I could check some of them simultaneously. I can't remember running into this in the 1.3.1 install and was overjoyed. With the cursor on one of the lines, I hit Enter assuming it would check the box (no insructions) and Boom was taken to deselect to begin the painful process of individual selection. I would love to be able to get baack to that system choice screen. How do I do it, and how do I make it work when I get there?? Some additional comments on user friendliness, where a few lines of instruction would help for the newbie or casual user (of which I am one). 1. The above mentioned screen could have used some instructions, or perhaps I missed them. 2. When you choose to use deselect from the CDRom, it asks you for the appropriate block device, with no examples (eg, /dev/hdc). I remember this causing me trouble on my first install. Albert Hurd

I've got a ... well, what basically amounts to a kludge to get around a blocked SMTP port... I'm using a remote mailbox and fetchmail to serve as a sort of virtual mailhosting, which has, until now, worked just fine. I say until now because I hadn't noticed my setup's behavior where bounced mail is concerned -- basically, fetchmail grabs the mail, shunts it to my local sendmail deamon, and tries to deliver it. The problem is that when sendmail cannot deliver it, it sends out a bounce message, and the fetchmail client terminates the fetch, since it is unable to deliver the mail. Is it a matter of just resequencing some lines in my XF86Config file? Yup, just rearrange the modes in your Screen section. Make sure you choose the screen section that corresponds to the server you're using, and the SubSection Display that corresponds to the bit depth you're using. e.g. I have: SubSection Display Depth16 Modes1152x864 1024x768 800x600 640x480 EndSubSection So 1152x864 is the default. I'd also like to use a resolution of 1152x870, but that resolution wasn't provided under xf86config. Is there some way I can calculate the vertical and horizontal frequencies for this resolution and add them to my XF86Config file? 1280x1024 is a little much for my .31DP monitor... That's a bit tricky. I think there's an X howto that goes into more detail. The lame way to do it: make sure your monitor's hsync and vsync are correct in XF86Config so that X will reject any invalid modelines that might break your monitor. Then add 1152x870, using 1280x1024 as a starting point, and start tweaking the numbers until you get one that will at least come up on the screen. It will probably be off-center and flickery, so use 'xvidtune' to correct that, then copy the new numbers from xvidtune to your modeline. You should be able to see that two of the numbers in the modeline correspond to the resolution, so start by changing those, then change the other numbers to be related to the resolution in the same way that the numbers in another modeline are. Clearly there's a real way to do this using formulas, check the X howto. Havoc

You may want to file a wishlist bug to make it configurable via /etc/adduser.conf If you crerate the directory with the wanted permissions before calling adduser, adduser will simply this directory. So make yourself a custom script (myadduser or such), that creates the directory and calls adduser afterwards. Alternatively, set the permissions afterwards. If you create the directory first, the skeleton files won't be copied because adduser assumes the home directory is not to be mucked about with. Thanks! -- Tracy Nelson Well there is a file /etc/X11/XF86Config the easy way to do this is just outcomment the lines you don't need in that file with a '#'. The ones you need to comment are: Subsection Display Depth 16 Modes 640x480 800x600 1024x768 ViewPort0 0 EndSubsection or just remove the one you don't need. Like: 640x480 or put them on the end of the line. You need to do this in section Device and in Screen. you probably have multiple sections screeen, you can do them all or do the one you think is the right one. Hope this helps. PS this is not the proper way, I think the proper way is using xf86config or XF86Setup, but, I don't use them for 'fine tuning'.

New to the group: my 3 boxes....
Hi all, I was directed here by a very helpful person on the comp.os.linux.setup group, (thanks Tom!) looks like just what I need. I have been puttering with Linux for a few years, started with Slackware, tried Redhat 4x and 5x, and lately I got my hands on Debian 2.0, Caldera 2.2, Linux Pro and SuSe. Any questions I have here will (obviouslty) refer to the Debian distribution. I have 3 pcs I am working on at once, here are the stats: 486, 16 meg ram, 300 meg hd (FAT16) 200 meg hd (ext2) no cdrom - Debian 2.0, some generic ISA video P100, 24 meg ram, 1.2 gig hd (ext2) 4X Mitsumi - Calera 2.2, STB Powergraph 64v+ running KDE (blech) Celron 300a @ 450, 64 megs ram, 4.2 gig 800 meg hd., 36X IDE cd. Riva 16meg TNT - nothing yet. I am thinking about putting Debian 2.0 on the Celeron, and when I have PPP running connect to the ftp site and upgrade it to the latest (2.2?) My question is, what sort of X11 window managers are included with 2.0? I know COL comes with KDE (I am not terribly impressed with it), and I have not yet gotten to the point where I can switch window managers on a whim like changing Themes in 95 (although it IS a goal of mine!) I used Afterstep on one of the RH boxes and I liekd it, mostley because it didnt look too much like 95; my opinion is, it aint 95, why would I want it to LOOK like it? :-) Anyway, opinions welcome! Re: Large .deb packages..
John Foster wrote: Maybe having another section of debian would be better: eg main,contrib,non-free,non-US,marginal. [I'm sure someone could come up with a better name than marginal :-)] Marginal would contain really large packages, or packages that very few people might want to use. If their popularity took off then they would be moved to main. That way the debian CDs contain main, (and anything distributable from contrib and non-free). marginal would have to be got over the internet like non-US. This would perhaps be more in line with the current debian system, I don't know. ___ I would like to see a category added to the Debian web site for things like this that would be available for fringe usage or special projects developers to place unique/specilaized debianized binaries and source files for centralized availability. There are LOTs of .deb binaries out there for applications in specialized fields (math, radio astronomy, physics, biology, graphic's development, etc.) These are mostly useful to students and folks doing some type of research, however they would be made available to the general public via this central location. I do not think they should be put on any CD image for distribution except as an additional CD for special projects. I do feel that there should be both stable and unstable areas for this category, and that these files should meet all standard debian distro criteria before being posted. This area could also include ports to Debian from other systems such as Slackware, Red Hat etc. that are not widely available. Yep, I agree with you totally actually - as far as I see it, one of the major advantages of the .deb format is that all of the .deb's are made by specific debian maintainers who (hopefully) are well acquainted with debian, and know what they are doing. Another well known package format has (from what I understand, I could be completely wrong, and Im not trying to start a long post about merits of packaging systems etc) far less rigorous standards, and there are packages all over the place made by all and sundry. Good nad bad I suppose. (maybe thats the advantage for debian being no 2 distro...) With your ideas, this is maintained, so not only is debian more stable (???) its packages are better as well (???). frankie -- John Foster AdVance-Computing Systems [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null -- ,-.
