Re: Leica M but which one?
Thank you all for your thoughts. Will look at the links provided and certainly use other informations you gave. Hope I can manage to get this project real. As for film is dead as Godfrey says, I think not. But darkroom though might soon be indeed (what a pity). APX100 @ 2.5€ per film (36 shots) is nowhere near too expensive IMO. -- Thibault Massart aka Thibouille/Thibs -- -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Leica M but which one?
I slowly convinced myself I needed to try a Leica (was hard actually). I don't wanna try alternatives *before* the M, if the M is nice but doesn't justify the cost, I'll look into Voigtlander and such. So, fot those who indeed shot with an M, what should I look for? Buying new is out of the question, and, let's say a lens might get useful as well ;) An M4 seems affordable but no meter. M6 is pricey at about 1000 euros. Mmm are brick and mortar dealer a more serious source for that kind of cameras or Ebay is as good (scared of scams). Thank you. Re: Leica M but which one?
Thank you. I was suspecting such an answer, and I admit I'm very happy with it :) Less money, and I'll be forced to train my meter so to say. May Kodak live long enough for my Tri-X needs. 2012/2/23 p. j. alling webstertwenty...@gmail.com: If you're using film, forget about a meter with a Leica and learn the characteristics of Tri-X, Most of my shooting with the Spotmatic II and Tri-X was well beyond the metering capability of the camera. In fact the first time I had a camera who's meter was even close to as good as a trained eye was my LX. Heck man you're using film. By the way, since the resale value of used Leicas is pretty close to the purchase price, any good condition specimen that you buy is a bargain. You can probably sell it for nearly as much as you paid for it. Maybe more than you paid for it if you're lucky. Re: [All countries ] Street shooting and Image use (legal/rights) influence
Thanks to all who responded so far. Seems the idea was good. I totally agree with Godfrey on the subject. Of course legal details are country (or region in federal countries) specific but interesting nonetheless. It seems in Québec, street shooting is more or less dead unless you ask the subject *before* you take the picture. Which completely annihilates the purpose of the photograph in the first place. That would leave me with my 9-year-old Epson 2200 to sell. The problem is... it's a rather large printer. So even at a low price (I'm thinking $150.00) it probably will need to go to someone local. (I have the original box and all packing, but I expect shipping won't be cheap. So I'm asking The List if anyone's interested. It was refurbished by Epson last year (Epson's biggest service shop is near Boston so I didn't have to ship it anywhere - one reason I'm sticking with Epson printers) It got a new motherboard, print heads, etc.. So anyway... Re: Sigma 150mm macro lens
Not sure the 150/2.8 has ever been available for Pentax, not even the recent HSM version (at least according to Sigmaphoto.com) The 180/3.5 was, but of course the 150 is f/2.8 :) Note that the 150/2.8 has been discontinued and replaced by an OS version. It isn't available (yet?) in Pentax mount. 2011/6/10 Mark Cassino markcass...@ymail.com: Hi Everyone - It finally happened - my trusty old SMC A* 200mm macro developed a problem this past weekend, and there is clearly an issue in the linkage between the arm that controls the aperture and the aperture mechanism itself. I sent it off to Pentax in hopes that they can get it fixed up, and hopefully they can. But I may as well do some contingency planning as I await to hear form them... The only viable option I see out there now is the Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro. Has anyone tried this lens? They state that it has a minimum focusing distance of 15 inches which is 1:1 magnification. So, minus the length of the lens (5 inches) it looks like there would be about 10 inches of working room. That's not bad - the 200mm macro hit about 12 inches of working room at 1:1. The D-FA 100 only has about 6 inches. Any thoughts about other options? The Sigma 180mm macro is long gone and the A* and FA* 200 macros are impossible to find. I just started playing around with my A* 300 f4 and a Canon 500D multi element close up lens - the first test were surprisingly sharp, but the range you can focus in is very small and the maximum magnification is only about .65 life-size. I plan on trying the D-FA 100 with a teleconverter this weekend, but am not optimistic. Any thoughts on the Sigma 150 or other options that might be out there? I put it online at http://www.tbray.org/tmp/screen-grab.png - I thought .png was uncompressed! PNG is not lossy like JPEG, but it is compressed. The compression is not as efficient as JPEG because it can't play tricks that lossy conversions can. I'm sure that a silky-smooth jpg of this picture could be created. But I don't know how. -Tim I'm barely seeing your bars; they are not *that* obvious. Assuming your toolchain is 100% 16-bit (or better) end-to-end, then your image is suffering from banding by being dithered down to 8-bits at the output. JPEG is 8-bits RGB, so you are most likely introducing banding right there. Also as for your PNG image, there's 16-bit PNG and 8-bit PNG, and you used 8-bit, which will show clear banding same as the JPEG. screen-grab.png: PNG image, 764 x 727, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced Even 16-bit images can suffer from very slight banding in really gradual tonal transitions. The solution to that is to dither the image a bit -- add some intentional noise. You could use a mask in Photoshop to restrict the noise addition to just the darker bokeh areas and avoid mucking-up the bloom. There's a grain feature in LR (bottom of the Develop section) that you could play with to add some noise. And that's a _great_ shot, btw. My only issue with it is I can't see the stem which makes it look a little floating in space, but I guess that's because of the angle of view. You've struck an excellent balance with the DoF / sharp edges / bokeh. -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Thibault Massart aka Thibouille/Thibs -- Photo: K-7, Sigma 28/1.8 macro, FA50/1.4, DA40Ltd, K30/2.8, DA16-45, DA50-135, DA50-200, 360FGZ KX, MX, SuperA+Motor, Z1, P30 Mamiya C330+80/2.8 Sekonic L-208 FalconEyes TE300D x2 Studio flashes Laptop: Macbook 13 Unibody SnowLeo/Win7 Programing: Delphi 2009 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Converting an *ist DL to IR
James, if you don't put an IR filter on the lens, sensor will grab both IR and visible wavelength light, won't it? So if you only want IR, you have to put a filter on the lens anyway, or am I mistaken ? 2011/5/25 sky s...@eftel.net.au: A guest at the club had a talk about this very subject so will pass one what i can remember of it. Apperantly, the sensors are very senative to IR but the camera manufractors put an IR cut filter in front of the sensor as part of the sensor assembly. All that is required is to remove that IR cut filter and you have an IR camera. No need to add IR filters to the lens once this is done. Most camera repair places can do this for you. I haven't researched this, only going by what this guy said. He has taken many IR photos with his modded camera. Re: Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8 DA* ED IF
17-70 is SDM only (as is the 55/1.4 btw) so no screwdriver option. The problem is, if SDM fails, the body will not allow a fallback to usual screwdrive (and we are angry at PEntax because of that) but a non-SDM body (ist-D serie, K100D) will work with screwdrive just fine. AFAICT the 16-50 had a lot more SDM problems than the 50-135 but this is from memory. As for the lens itself, it isn't very fast to AF but optically this is a pure gem. 2011/4/27 David Parsons parsons.da...@gmail.com: You can remove a picture from the catalog without deleting it from the disk. Delete the file (in LR), and when the prompt comes up, select Remove. I'm not entirely sure I understand. Is this the situation? - You have two catalogs intended for different purposes, Personal and Courses. - You do not want the image files to be included in both catalogs. - When you import with each catalog, you want LR to move your image files into different file system locations to keep them separated. Yes, sir. - When you imported files into your Courses catalog, you inadvertently set LR to place the files in the file system location normally used for your Personal files. It may be. Actually, looking at the rest of your post, I see that is most probably the problem. I, indeed, broke myself the thing. I do not want to mix files, deleting a file when it is also present in the second catalog will create a big mess and since LR can't open both catalog at the same time... can't do another way. Did I messed things up? Or did LR? I'm under the impression that LR keeps the last import settings in memory but do NOT it does so in relation to what catalog is opened. Which means, if I'm no cautious enough, things gets mixed (and messed up). Is it so ? The worst thing that can happen if you delete files from one catalog (and delete or move them around in the file system) is that the same image files also present in the other catalog will come up with question marks saying that Lightroom can't find them. All you have to do is tell the catalog with the question marks to synchronize with the file system and remove missing files. Yep, indeed, that what happended (followed by a loud S**T) ;) But I copied back the files where I intended them to be otherwise it becomes a big mess. Similarly, once you put the files into the right locations for the other catalog, either re-import them or synchronize existing folders into which they've been placed. Will do, thanks. Lightroom remembers import settings on a per catalog basis automatically, but the sensible and safe thing to do if you want LR to move files into separate locations in two different catalogs/import scenarios is to define two import presets, one for each catalog, and remember to choose the correct one when doing your imports. That, I was unsure about. Thank you for pointing it out and more thanks because I never thought about the import presets. To me it was more like doing a couple adjustments/conversions at import time which I didn't want to. I have about four different import scenarios articulating in what destinations in the file system I want imports to place the files, so I have a preset set up for each of them. Will certainly do as well now. John, were shadow compensation, lens corrections etc ON ? They significantly slow down the camera. 2011/4/24 John Celio n...@neovenator.com: I shot a wedding in Yosemite National Park yesterday and my K-5 performed admirably. There were two problems I noticed that got on my nerves and may have ruined some pictures. 1. The shot-to-preview time (how long it takes a photo to appear on the screen after it is taken) is painfully long. Granted, these photos are much larger than what I was used to with my K10D (which was pretty quick with the previews), but I really wish Pentax could find some way to speed things up for us chimpers. It is partly because of this delay that my second complaint came about. 2. When shooting indoors with my 540FGZ attached, I had to keep a very close eye on flash exposure in the preview images and constantly dial back the flash output by at least one stop and up to two stops to prevent massive highlight blowout. This bit me in the ass during the cake cutting because I had to be fast, I had to be in close proximity to the table couple, the flash had somehow reset itself to normal output and I couldn't wait for the camera to show me if I was getting the proper exposure. Now, maybe this can be chalked up to Pentax's flash system being not-that-great, or maybe it's just my relative inexperience and lack of foresight, but I wish I had just bumped the ISO way up and shot without flash. Live and learn, I guess. At least I can say with some certainty that those were the only bad shots I took, and I know the bride groom (who are friends) probably won't care that much. It was the second marriage for both of them and the whole thing was pretty casual. Re: FA35/2 v DA35/2.4
They are indeed the same lens but front element is somewhat hidden by plastic barrel which makes the DA a f/2.4 lens. Though, I read a couple comments (was it here or on PentaxForums?) that in practice, (comparing directly the two lenses and noting the exposure recommended by the camera) the f/2.4 seems to gather more light than its f/2.4 aperture would suggest. Something like f/2.2. They seem to offer really the same performance. FA is better built. Neither have QS focus. DA has built-in lens correction profiles, though (as every DA lenses) and FA comes with hood (adapted for full frame) but DA has no hood AFAIK. I have neither of those lenses so I can't say more. 2011/4/21 Collin Brendemuehl coll...@brendemuehl.net: Has anyone compared the two? Re: Tokina AF 35-70mm on K-5
Very simple: Tokina 'hacked' the Pentax 35-70 code and used it. Sigma does/did the same btw, my 28/1.8 being identified as a Pentax 28/2.8 (funny as I shoot @1.8). The lens ID is given by the lens to the body. The K5 will NOT itself apply any lens correction because the K5 can do so only for DA and FA Limited lenses. Lightroom, though may do *IF* it has an associated profile (fot the Pentax 35-70 lens), and this is not present by default. 2011/4/20 Matthew Hunt m...@pobox.com: On Wed, Apr 20, 2011 at 3:07 PM, Roman Melihhov ro...@blakout.net wrote: I got my Tokina 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 today... I'd noticed one thing. K-5 thinks it is PENTAX-F 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 lens. How are you determining this (i.e. with what software)? I ask because Pentax does not include a textual name for the lens in the EXIF. That is, there's nothing in the EXIF that literally says PENTAX-F 35-70mm f3.5-4.5. Instead, there's a numerical code that needs to be compared to a table or catalog that's programmed into the software. This means that there are a few possibilities: 1) The K-5 really is putting the numerical code for the Pentax lens into the EXIF. This seems unlikely to me. 2) The K-5 is putting the Tokina's correct code into the EXIF, but your software has an error in its lookup table, and it displays the PENTAX-F description instead. 3) The K-5 is putting the Tokina's correct code into the EXIF, but your software does not actually use that code, or it's missing the correct entry in its table. So it is making a best guess based on the fact that you're using a Pentax camera, and the focal length and aperture are consistent with the Pentax lens. (I've seen software that works this way, because every camera manufacturer encodes the lens info differently, and they couldn't be bothered to implement Pentax's method.) PhotoME (Windows) does a good job of decoding the EXIF information accurately, in my experience. http://www.photome.de/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Thibault Massart aka Thibouille/Thibs -- Photo: K-7, Sigma 28/1.8 macro, FA50/1.4, DA40Ltd, K30/2.8, DA16-45, DA50-135, DA50-200, 360FGZ KX, MX, SuperA+Motor, Z1, P30 Mamiya C330+80/2.8 Sekonic L-208 FalconEyes TE300D x2 Studio flashes Laptop: Macbook 13 Unibody SnowLeo/Win7 Programing: Delphi 2009 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Or even know that they need to switch to green mode if they know little enough to set the camera so inappropriately? Seems kinda ridiculous. Re: What next in an SLR?
AFAIK the A lenses do PTTL with K7. 2011/4/18 Leon Altoff leon.alt...@gmail.com: Hi Tim, I've considered this same thing, though Pentax normally do manage to make a nice improvement between models. Personally I've decided to upgrade every second major upgrade - bought a K10D, skipped the K20D, bought the K7, skipped the K5, buy the K3?. I'll admit I'd like the improved low light capability of the K5 over the K7, but as I'm expecting the K3 (for want of a better model number to apply) to be improved I can wait. For a while. If it's not improved then I will probably go out and buy a K5 simply to keep the control layout on the back the same between the K5 and the K7 (because I do use 2 bodies). I'm hanging out for some rumors of what the next model holds, but there is nothing. And I'm watching other's buying K5's. What should they be working on? I don't know. Re: Tilt-shift lenses or adaptors
Thank you Darren and Peter. Very useful, really. In the mean time, I realized it would be somewhat cheaper (with is pros and cons) do go straight for the ideal (to me) concerning T/S, which is View camera. Got one already, need the lens. I already have neg carrier and what I need to develop the negs myself. It should be flexible enough as far as tilt/shift is concerned. 2011/4/13 Darren Addy pixelsmi...@gmail.com: It sort of depends what you are wanting to shoot. Do you need infinity focus? Do you need a wide angle view? It is hard to have it all without buying a tilt-shift lens that was made for your mount. I'm no expert on this, but learned a bit when creating this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/sets/72157606681839809/ The main thing working against me on this was the prism/pentamirror overhang on my K200D. You wouldn't need as big an adapter on the back if you wanted to use my contraption with a film SLR and so might still be able to get infinity focus. But it is still going to be a 90mm focal length lens. My idea was to take the rise and swing built into the old folder and put it to use on a DSLR. The problem is that if your lens is farther away from the film plane (sensor) than designed, you will lose infinity focus. (But it will work for stuff closer). Larger format lenses have larger flange to film distances, so will definitely work better - but the problem is that they will be longer focal length than what you probably wanted. You'll notice that most tilt shift lenses are on wide angle lenses for the format. Here the 1.5x crop factor of APS-C DSLRs is also working against you. So, the best solution would be to have a tilt/shift adapter that worked with your camera and the widest angle 645 lens you can find. For example: the Pentax 645 35mm f/3.5 A SMC K Shift lens (28mm f3.5) recently sold for a bit north of $600 including shipping: http://cgi.ebay.com/Pentax-K-SMC-Shift-28mm-f-3-5-Lens-MINT-/360356155270?pt=Camera_Lenseshash=item53e6e68f86#ht_4668wt_1139 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Thibault Massart aka Thibouille/Thibs -- Photo: K-7, Sigma 28/1.8 macro, FA50/1.4, DA40Ltd, K30/2.8, DA16-45, DA50-135, DA50-200, 360FGZ KX, MX, SuperA+Motor, Z1, P30 Mamiya C330+80/2.8 Sekonic L-208 FalconEyes TE300D x2 Studio flashes Laptop: Macbook 13 Unibody SnowLeo/Win7 Programing: Delphi 2009 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: understanding sensitivity, dynamic range, contrast etc.
And if you wanna use Bill's idea and really push it (the idea, not Bill), you'd use a 1° spot meter because, really, our Pentax cameras spot meter isn't that spot. It is around 5° or more AFAIR. If you're really too rich, get a Sekonic L758 which you can profile with your DSLR sensor specs (DR etc.) and that bloody 758 (which embeds a 1° spot meter) will tell you if the scene has too much EV four your sensor to eat. Re: Tilt-shift lenses or adaptors
Thank you all. Definitely interesting ideas :) I'd prefer not to use a bellow, for convenience reasons and avoid the freelensing (though it should be fun, I have the Tamron but in 28/2.5 version). I even contemplate the possibility of using other brands cameras just for that purpose. I guess using a vue camera in studio is influencing my wishes for my photography. Canon TSE lenses are insanely priced. Isn't there any other TS lenses for cheap? Too bad... I'd even use a CaNikon if needs to (ouch). 2011/4/12 eckinator eckina...@gmail.com: The Zörkendörfer MFS (Multi Focus System) might do the trick for you - it is basically a tilt convertor for enlarger lenses (other lenses can also be adapted but the default is M39 screwmount). They show up on eBay from time to time. Expect to pay 150-250 w/o a lens. Zörk also builds a shift adaptor to go with it. Problem with all aftermarket t/s conversions is that you can't really shoot wide angles. HTH Ecke BTW you can borrow my Novoflex t/s bellows if you can afford to replace/repair it should it come to that. 2011/4/5 Thibouille pentaxl...@gmail.com: I'm looking into getting a T/S lens. K7 does PTTL with A lenses AFAIK. 2011/4/12 AlunFoto alunf...@gmail.com: If the K-5 has reintroduced support for P-TTL with A-series lenses, that's great news. As most of you probably know, the K-mount cameras no longer support the old-style TTL flashes. The last camera to do so was the *istDS2. Now it's only P-TTL that works. And only with AF lenses. With manual focus lenses you have no TTL flash metering at all. I was worried that this might be the case for 645D too, but fortunately P-TTL works with the 645A-series lenses too. For the same reason people think m43 is too big (at least in current incarnations). But, as you point it out, it brings problems inherent to sensor size (noise and DOF). It may get a market though. I know I wish my LX3 could change lens. Even with its small sensor (bigger than the 1/2.33 chosen for NC-1 though). Re: Sigma APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM PDQ XYZ ETC
About the number 10/ you listed. The reason is simple. AFAIK Sigme does not have any TC with SDM/Powerzoom power contacts. Stupid, heh ? Thanks for the report, Stan. 2011/3/25 Stan Halpin s...@stans-photography.info: I was recently asking about this lens. Hearing no major horror stories about this or similar lenses, and having some of my concerns about compatibility put to rest by the Sigma technical folks (kudos to them for a quick, concise, and on-target email response to my query), I bought one from Adorama. The price was a couple hundred dollars higher than I had remembered from a few weeks ago when I started looking. I don't know if that is poor memory or a supply-demand adjustment. First impressions and observations: 1. Not as heavy as I feared. On the other hand, 2. It is clear that plastic is well represented in the overall makeup of the lens. Seems to be good quality plastic, but still. 3. The in-lens AF system operates on HSM which is compatible with my K20 HSM. Knowing nothing about the underlying technology, I consider this to be a minor miracle. Multiple manufacturers are using the same technology in a way that allows them to be cross compatible! Wow! 4. The AF allows manual override if the body's AF is on AF-S. 5. The AF is more of an AF-assisted MF. I.e., you could probably brew an espresso in the time it takes to find focus if you start with the lens on close-up and ask it to focus on something close to infinity. It reminds me of using the Pentax F-1.7x extender with a manual lens, a similar need to pre-focus the lens. 6. However, if you have the lens zone-focused in the general neighborhood of your subject, the AF seems quick and precise with no unseemly dithering. 7. The lens has an Optical Stabilization (OS) system. a. they say you can use the OS, or the camera's SR, but not both at the same time. b. the OS seems to work. I haven't really given it a workout yet. c. it is nice to have an in-lens OS on a long lens; I have trouble hand holding anything longer than a 250 or 300 because I can't get a good sense of focus with the image in the viewfinder moving around so much. 8. The OS has 3 modes: Off (recommended to avoid execess power consumption), 1, and 2. The instructions are not clear on the difference between 1 and 2, but I think 2 is for shooting race cars or speed skaters or other targets moving horizontally while 1 is for general scenes where either nothing is moving (other than the camera in the hands of the unsteady photographer who had too much coffee) or the subject(s) exhibit random unpredictable movement around the scene like in a hockey game or a kids soccer game. 9. The lens is not weather proof. 10. The Sigma web site, the Adorama and BH descriptions of the lens, and the generic instruction sheet that comes with the lens all mention the Sigma 1.4x and 2.0x extenders which will work with this lens (though in manual focus mode only.) However, we are special! Pentax users get an extra footnote: the Pentax-mount Sigma tele-extenders are NOT compatible with this lens. I've seen no explanation on what the incompatibility is. 11. One other thing I almost forgot! The lens comes with a soft case which has a shoulder strap; I have never understood why people would make cases that are only good for storing lenses and don't have provision for carrying them in the case. But Sigma goes a step further: they also have a shoulder strap that attaches directly to the lens (on the tripod mount)! I don't know that I would use it, but thanks Sigma for thinking of this. General comment - the lens is not magical. It does sometimes miss focus. My handheld shots at 500mm show some signs of movement not overcome by the OS. But a few quick shots this afternoon were far better than what I have been able to do with similar subjects in similar lighting. It is a keeper until I can find a Pentax counterpart that performs at least as well. Here is my translation of the recipe, from Les Recettes preferees de la mere Denis: Mix 400g of minced beef with 50g of moistened bread crumbs. Add an egg yolk, salt, pepper, aromatics. Knead. Form it into 8 patties and dredge them through flour. Fry them in butter on each side for about 8 minutes in total. So, if that's not a burger I don't know what is. The Academie should read more cookbooks, then they could have used bitok. After all, isn't bifteck derived from beef steak in any case? Photographing a pair of sandals in the shoe rack, indoors, the D700, at full crop, ISO 6400, f/2.8, 1/80 had better performance than the K-5. But not as much better as one might expect. We then shot a fence and building across the parking lot, ISO 6400, f/2.8, 1/15, and the gap narrowed considerably, and in color noise, the K-5 may have just slightly edged ahead of the D700. Given that I have K7, I did not have to wait for batteries to charge. Set it up - man, they keep adding options. Fired off some shots. Presently I have two major impressions: 1. The shutter action is even softer than that of K7. The stealthiness of K5 is remarkable. 2. The AF under plain 60 Watt lamp is more thoughtful than that of K7. I am not certain as to precision thereof, but it surely takes its time. Noticed also that under LV it magnifies the area where it is focusing. May be I don't need split focusing screen for this camera... Today I am going to dial in my lenses as Paul says and do some shooting with the family. Last but absolutely not least, K7 has officially been passed to Galia. I changed the owner name in the settings and she smiled broadly when I showed her that K7 was now hers. Boris P.S. Re: Advice solicitation for analog shooting
Walter, about those metering and mid gray things. A simple but very effective thing our teacher asked us: Take a pic of a white object (like sheets of paper), a gray object and a black object. To stay simple, the three objects will have about the same color (gray of course). This is simple and clearly nails the problem. A built-in meter (and any meter used in reflective metering), even how modern it is, is always influenced by color and reflection power of the metered object. 2011/2/10 Walter Gilbert ldott...@gmail.com: Thanks for the explanation, Collin. When Paul said to overexpose, I was actually thinking it sounded counter-intuitive -- that you'd want to under-expose in a snowy situation. But, it makes sense now that you explained that the meter assumes a neutral grey. So, I'm assuming that in extra-low-light situations, I'd want to under-expose by a couple of stops in that case. Glad I found this out before getting too deep into the roll! -- Walt On 2/9/2011 8:40 PM, Collin Brendemuehl wrote: No!!! Always overexpose snow by 2 stops. Why? Question about Metz 45CL4 (analog one, not the recent digital version) and SCA adapters
I should receive my 45CL4 any day now. I bought it for my C330 but intend to use it with my K7/SuperA/KX/MX as well since I have it anyway. The question is: would there be a significant difference when using it with SCA adaters between 372 and 3702 adapters? Re: Question about Metz 45CL4 (analog one, not the recent digital version) and SCA adapters
Thanks both of you. In theory the SCA372 should bring: * flash recycle LED in viewfinder when supported * Auto-commute to X-sync speed when supported * Plain old TTL (when used with SuperA/Z1) The 374 (the AF one) or 370x modules *may* provide 2nd curtain sync (when supported by camera). I should test my old 240FT and see if the LED lights up in K7 viewfinder and 2nd curtain sync. Anyway, not sure it brings enough to buy the cables and adapters again (I sold mine to Boris months ago with a very nice 40MZ2 ;) X-sync cord will do it IMO :) 2011/2/11 eckinator eckina...@gmail.com: No but I'd be interested to find out as I still have a 45CT5 kicking around from my Canon days and it is a mighty fine flash Cheers Ecke 2011/2/11, Thibouille pentaxl...@gmail.com: I should receive my 45CL4 any day now. I bought it for my C330 but intend to use it with my K7/SuperA/KX/MX as well since I have it anyway. The question is: would there be a significant difference when using it with SCA adaters between 372 and 3702 adapters? AFAIK current Pentax DSLRs still support the old analog signaling although plain TTL isn't supported anymore. In that case, IMO, 3702 would add exactly nothing. But I'm not sure so... Re: Pentax GPS accessory
Bad idea IMO, siply because that would eat battery power like crazy, on both the logger and the camera. 2011/2/11 Glen Berry g...@glenvision.com: This seems like it would be a good application for blue tooth technology. That is, if only Pentax cameras were built with blue tooth capability. You would then only have to have the GPS unit near the camera, not connected to it. How does this thing work if it's mounted there? It's got to have some sort of output from the camera to tell it when a photo is taken so it knows when to log the coordinates. I'm curious how it gets that information since the hot-shoe it appears to mount on doesn't trigger all the time. - No virus found in this message.
