[android-developers] How to best handle android.net.wifi.LINK_CONFIGURATION_CHANGED ?

2017-09-21 Thread Richard Schilling
On my network I've started to see the ConnectivityService broadcast
android.net.wifi.LINK_CONFIGURATION_CHANGED
intents every time a UDP packet is being sent. It prevents the response
from coming back.

Whenever the link configuration is changed, it flips between one of two
IPv6 addresses. Does anybody know how the best way to handle this case? I
need to be able to send out a UDP packet and read the response.

Here's what I think the relevant source file is:
https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/be9ee6a498afc08df1ca6d796b703b703b25c9a9%5E!/

Here's a log of the intent:

<--- UDP Packet is sent here, and instead of the response I see this
intent. Notice the IPv6 address change -->

[android-developers] Transfer App with subscriptions to new account

2017-08-23 Thread Richard Meißner
Hey,

we would like to transfer an app to a new account. For that we are
currently setting up the account (which might take a week). On the other
hand we are currently developing a feature with in-app subscriptions. Is it
possible to transfer the app even if we already have active subscriptions
or do we have to delay the feature to avoid having an app with in-app
subscriptions to be able to transfer it.

I read
through
https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/6230247?hl=en_topic=16285

and couldn't find any mention of in-app subscriptions. But on other google
forums it was stated that an app cannot be transferred in that case.

Help would be appreciated
Richard

You could use Nearby https://developers.google.com/nearby/. It has WiFi,
ultrasonic and Bluetooth options which would work around the lack of
internet connectivity, but it would require users to be on the same WiFi
network or in relatively close proximity.

Mostly I would focus on getting as fast a 64-bit machine as is
reasonable, with a 64-bit OS, with a good amount of memory. The
problem for people running 32-bit windows is that you only get 4gb of
usable memory (regardless of how much is installed), so are running a
memory hungry application on top of a bloated/memory-restricted OS.

If you have a 64-bit machine with a decent amount (6-8gb+) of memory,
but running a 32-bit version of windows, you should consider
switching the OS to a 64-bit version of windows (or 64-bit linux,
which is rather less bloated than windows). That would let your
environment use all the installed memory and may make things work
just fine.

I am not an accountant or a lawyer ...

If you are in the US on a student visa, as your email address and
message kind of imply, I think you need to be very careful.

There are restrictions on employment that vary based on the US visa
type one has. Whether developing apps, on your own, is considered
employment is an interesting question. I would suggest that you check
with your institution for pointers to people who can give you the
correct answers.

If a US visa isn't an issue (i.e., you aren't in the US or aren't on
a visa), you will likely need to declare the income to the country
where you reside and pay the appropriate taxes. The amount of income
you get may preclude you from having to actually pay tax, but
generally you have to file something proving that your total income
(from all sources) was below some threshold.

Yes, google app income is likely taxable income - wherever you are.
Talk to an accountant and/or lawyer.

I think it is important to understand the differences between Google,
Android and your device's vendor -- and the roles they play.

A "nexus" branded device is a Google-supported product for which you
will get timely androidOS updates through the end of the hardware
support cycle (which I think is 2-3 years). After that the device
will continue to work, but certain services that require a newer OS
won't be available (Apple does the same thing, I think with about the
same length of hardware support).

A non-"nexus" device running android, like your Galaxy S4, is a
vendor product, in this case Samsung. The vendor provides their
version of the androidOS and are responsible for maintaining and
updating it. Options that they include, e.g., Touchwiz, fall to the
vendor to support and fix, not google/android. Also, how quickly and
how long OS updates are provided for is a vendor, not google/android,
issue.

In terms of your specific issue -- I just turned on a factory reset
[samsung] nexus (android 4.3) device that's about four years old.
After opening the factory-default "play store" app it automatically
updated both "play store" and "play services" to the current versions
-- store -- 6.5 ... and services -- 9.0... I had no trouble using the
default (4.5.17) youtube app, and was able to update it to the
current 11.19... version.

So, from my experience, it's not clear why you are having a problem.
My suggestion is that you make a clean start. Do a system reset to
return the device to the original [samsung-provided] default. Then
open the play store app and see what happens. In my case it looked
like the play store was hanging, but I believe that the device was
simply downloading/updating the fairly large updated services app.
Once the automatic updates of both services and store had completed
everything was normal.

Setting up a DNS server is very off-topic for this list. A quick
search in your search-engine of choice should turn up the information
you need for that task. If you need assistance beyond that, you might
try a linux-centric mailing list or forum.

Since you are trying to look up private network address information
your machine/device would need to be using the DNS server (either by
default or explicitly, as you do with your "dig") that holds that
detail. If your machine/device is assigned (as part of it's IPaddress
allocation) or configured to use a public DNS server it won't be able
to see the information for the private network.

There are various android apps that will show you the DNS server(s)
that your device is using. What DNS servers are assigned, in a
dynamic IPaddress environment, is handled at the network level. Some
android (network oriented) apps let you specify the DNS server(s) for
their purposes, but I don't believe that there is an open way to
change this at the device level.

With a properly configured firewall you wouldn't run into a problem,
that said -- the hostnames you list appear to be CNAMES for
googleapis.l.google.com, so that's what you really need to look at.

If you do a whois on the IPnumber returned for that hostname you'll
see the network block and can configure your firewall accordingly. In
my region -- I suspect this varies region-by-region -- I'm seeing
them using IPnumbers out of two blocks.

They appear to have a 5m TTL on googleapis.l.google.com, so that's
the frequency that you'd want to check in order to build up a list of
their blocks. There is also a 1hr TTL on the CNAMEs so you might want
to watch that to see if they change things there too. I think you
need to use the "-debug" flag on nslookup to see the current TTL
value. A better lookup tool is "dig".

A basic search on your searchengine of choice should quickly turn up
code samples that you might need. The HTML side of your multi-part
message should be in standards HTML, and any HTML-basics guide will
give examples of how to include an image reference.

Put the graphic(s) in question on a publicly accessible web server,
then include the image URL in the HTML part of a text/html multi-part
message. You might also want to include the URL for the image in the
text part, but that depends on your intent and the image contents,
e.g., branding vs. content.

Note, if done properly, the URL the HTML part will have a link that
can be optionally loaded by the message recipient. Most email clients
don't automatically load images or content from external links.

Re: [android-developers] need code for android app

You won't find a code sample for this specific application as it's so
specific. I'd have a look at
https://github.com/googlesamples?utf8=%E2%9C%93=android for samples
of the different elements you may need.

Re: [android-developers] ListView won't show up with Retrofit 2.0

You create the adapter with TelAdapter adapter = new TelAdapter
(MainActivity.this, R.layout.list_item, data);

Data is empty so you aren't seeing anything. You need to get the data out

[android-developers] Access to Music Player App Source Code possible?

2015-11-30 Thread Richard Krämer
Dear Google-Team,

I am a Student from Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany).

During my Master Thesis, which I am currently working on, I will try to
write an App to transform Stereo Music Files into Binaural Music Files (see
(*) below to get some infos about binaural audio data).
For this project it would be usefull to get access to the source code of a
(Google) Music App to be able to build up my App on this. This would spare
me to program a whole music app on my own because my Master Thesis does not
concern this but only the stereo-binaural transformation (and something
with interpolation between audio profiles).

So my question would be if such an access would be possible?
Thank you very much for your help in advance!

With kind regards
Richard Kraemer

(*) Binaural Audio Data is recorded with microphones that are placed >in<
the ears of a person. The shape of the ears of a person affect the sonar
waves that are recieved by the ear drum. Especially three dimensional
hearing (where is the sound source?) is possible because if sound waves hit
the outer ear from different directions these sound waves are changed
differently.

Re: [android-developers] Problem when publishing next version of my App

2015-06-20 Thread Richard Thompson
Are you using Gradle for your build? If you are using Gradle for your
build then the version settings in your Gradle file will take precedence
over the value in your manifest file.

If you open up the build.gradle file for your module in the defaultConfig
block there will be two lines:

versionCode 1
versionName 1.0

Change these to:

versionCode 2
versionName 2.0

and that should do the trick.

On 20 June 2015 at 13:00, NewToAndroid rahulra...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi All,

 I have a small app already live on Play Store. As I was new to Android, I
 totally forgot to mention any version on the manifest file. There was no
 versionCode or versionName in the first version of apk, which is live now.
 However, it is shown as version 1 in the developer console.

 Now I want to submit the upgrade i.e. next version.

 I have added following lines to the manifest file

 manifest xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
 package=com.mobile.mypackagename
 android:versionCode=2
 android:versionName=2.0

 Generated the release apk. Then I tried to upload the new apk file by
 clicking on Upload new apk to Production.
 But, I am getting error,* Upload failed. You need to use a different
 version code for your APK because you already have one with version code
 1.*

 What is the problem here ?

 Thanks in advance

[android-developers] Android WebView resolving URL occasionally results in multiple hits with different user agents

2014-03-04 Thread Richard Norbron

Hope you guys can offer me some advice.

I'm using a WebView component in a wrapper application. It has been
observed that when hitting a certain URL multiple hits are made to the same
page in quick succession but passing different user agents.

For example: - LOAD URL TO WEBVIEW

   -

   RECEIVE PAGE HIT REQUEST WITH *Dalvik/1.6.0 (Linux; U; Android 4.1.2;
   GT-S6310N Build/JZO54K) 2014-02-26 10:35:57.523*
   -

   RECEIVE PAGE HIT REQUEST WITH *Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 4.1.2;
   en-gb; GT-S6310N Build/JZO54K) AppleWebKit/534.30 (KHTML, like Gecko)
   Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/534.30 2014-02-26 10:35:57.603*

It should be noted that I am calling setUserAgentString on WebSettings to
supply the user agent string.

final WebSettings mWebSettings = mWebView.getSettings();
final String strUserAgent = mWebSettings.getUserAgentString();
if (strUserAgent != null) {
mWebSettings.setUserAgentString(strUserAgent);}

Is there a rational explanation for why this would only hit the page once
most of the time, but occasionally hit it twice with different user agents
as in the example provided?

Thanks for any insight you guys can provide.

Re: [android-developers] Re: What is difference between the Android App downloaded using Google Play store and the one directly installed?

2013-10-07 Thread Richard Schilling
I had the pleasure of being one of the developers on the Amazon App store.

Nikolay is correct in that when the Amazon appstore was first released the
intention (if memory serves) was to handle things server-side. There was
some client-side code that was needed make sure that person using an app is
the one that downloaded it. Ergo, the DRM library now exists in Android.
:-)

So, that may be a more complete answer to the original question: is the app
modified by the phone *after* it's downloaded?
The answer to that question *may* be false (for now) - it's impossible to
tell because it depends in theory on Google and the carriers. Who knows
what Android will do to apps in the future . both Google and carriers
reserve the right to change how the device unpackages and processes an .APK.

What could be the cause of the digest check failure mentioned in the
original question may indeed be to something happening on the server side.
 Other than DRM enhancement, you might expect things like unused assets to
get stripped.

Cheers,

RIchard

 Google Play does not do this, but the Amazon App Store does. BTW, the DRM

 The Amazon DRM is rather annoying, because it requires you to have the
 Appstore app and be logged in with the same user that downloaded the app.
 Fortunately, it is rather easy to get rid of.

[android-developers] Re: AIDL service connection, how to detect if service is never connected?

2013-10-07 Thread Richard Schilling
I believe you should always code Service.onBind to return an IBinder
object. But, yes, you can create some public methods in your service to
check things out. You'll call those methods on mBoundService after it's
been set. Notice in the example the service is cast to a LocalService
instance (see below).

It's safe to do that because when you unbind the service it can go away.

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Service.html

public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName className, IBinder service) {
// This is called when the connection with the service has been
// established, giving us the service object we can use to
// interact with the service. Because we have bound to a explicit
// service that we know is running in our own process, we can
// cast its IBinder to a concrete class and directly access it.
*mBoundService* = ((LocalService.LocalBinder)service).getService();

// Tell the user about this for our demo.
Toast.makeText(Binding.this, R.string.local_service_connected,
Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}

 Or is it better to always return a IBinder and give the user a method to
 determine if things on the service end are messed up.

 Otherwise the activity sits their happily for something that never arrives.

 Thank you.

Once you enable third-party app installation on the phone (Settings), you

point your phone browser to something like

[android-developers] Re: New Android ORM/Persistence Library

2013-10-05 Thread Richard Schilling
If you use the minimum number of classes from both libraries you'll get
about the same executable size (proguard strips out unused classes).
So, I look at the max size that a library could add to a project. An upper
bound if you will... Rounding up to the nearest 10k:

ORMLite's HelloAndroid example shows that library will add about 150k max
to your Android project
  (http://ormlite.com/android/examples/)

Kayak Point's example shows it will add about 60k max to your Android
project.

(http://code.google.com/p/kayak-point/source/browse/#git%2FEclipseProjects%2FKayakPointExample)

If cross-platform design is what you are after (e.g. run the same ORM code
on a desktop and an Android), then ORMLite is probably for you.

Here's a quick comparison for current versions of Kayak Point and ORMLite:

Re: [android-developers] Re: How to make a Service That will periodically send the Users Location on a server

2013-10-05 Thread Richard Schilling
to answer your question - it depends on what Google Maps is doing to
resolve your location.

If I understand you correctly, you're using the Google Maps api to display
current location, and you're comparing that location (which always seems
available) with the location information that the LocationManager provides
you.  Is that correct?

If that is, then there are a couple things that could be happening:

1. Google Maps could be resolving your location through some other means,
which includes contacting your phone's carrier to get a fix (Assisted GPS).
2. Google Maps could be using it's own way to resolve your location based
on a cell tower. Google uses a database for this purpose.

In any case, you should expect to see a difference (not that you always
will - but expect it to be so), between what you see on Google maps and
what LocationManager tells you.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Richard

[android-developers] Re: New library to serialize/convert primitives to byte arrays and back again...

2013-10-04 Thread Richard Schilling
I didn't compare to JSON serializers with that library because the goal is
to just do simple data marshalling with primitives and primitive arrays.
 I'm working on another library that will work as an ORM persistence layer
for SQLite. That library relies upon this one actually, so I will soon be
able to run some apples-to-apples comparisons.

To (I think) your point, some people would say that serialization of java
primitives to/from byte streams isn't a critical thing because we have JSON
parsers and/or DataOutputSteam that will do it for you. What I found is
that the library sizes for those things are much larger than they need to
be, especially for

. simple file stores
. serializing primitive arrays data to a byte stream for transmission

So, I'm finding it useful. Your mileage will vary of course. :-)

Cheers,

Richard

[android-developers] Overriding styles in different values files

Hi,

I'm using the new fontFamily attribute so that I can control the weight of

size etc in both values and values-v16 but it is necessary for all styling
to be applied. Is there someway to declare font family in the values-v16
styles file and inherit the colour, size etc from the values version of the
file.

[android-developers] Looking for a developer for a simple widget

2012-07-21 Thread Richard Pickett
I'm looking for a developer that will write a simple app. I'm basically
wanting a branded version of 1 VPN - a widget that sits on the home
screen that toggles a VPN on and off and indicates whether it's currently
connected or not.

I'm open to the terms, whether it's a single payment for the app or if they
want a share of each monthly subscriber that uses the app.

I work in the Internet security industry and won't have any problems
marketing it. I just need the app written.

If you're interested or need more info, just reply and we can start the
dialog.

Thanks,

[android-developers] ListView not rendering completely in certain animation conditions

2012-06-19 Thread Richard Nelson
When an animation plays on a ListView which is placed on top of a VideoView
in a RelativeLayout (this happens when the ListView is placed above some
other view types as well, but not for example, ImageView), the ListView is
not rendered entirely. If requestLayout() is called on the listview on
animation completion, it then becomes completely visible. Here are two
screenshots, the second one with requestLayout() called at animation
completion:

http://imgur.com/a/b8TVa

Here's paste of code to see this oddness: http://gist.github.com/2934018 .
If one removes the rotationY objectAnimator, the ListView displays
correctly. Or if the VideoView is replaced with an ImageView, the animation
with the rotationY objectAnimator displays correctly.

Another way to see this is to place the listview in the ListFlipper
(layout/rotation_list.xml) sample in the API demos in a relative layout
with a VideoView, both with match_parent/match_parent layout params.

I'm unsure if this is a bug or if I'm doing something wrong - if it's a
bug, is there a workaround? I haven't tested this with any view type other
than ListView. I get the same behaviour on a 4.0.3 device (Samsung
GT-N7000) and the emulator.

cheers,

[android-developers] Re: graphing app and widget?

2012-05-24 Thread Richard Pickett

 Hey gents,

I'm looking for a basic graphing app that will pull a feed from a server.
xml, csv, whatever.

would be nice if it also had a widget that would display latest readings,
also pulled from server (could be in the main dataset, could be separate).

I'm asking more do you guys know of one that does this than could
someone write one for me, although the later is a possibility I'd
entertain paying for.

I've searched through tons of apps and haven't found one. The only ones
I've found are ones you have to hand-enter all the data in yourself, but I
want something that I can have auto-refresh and get the latest stats.

Basic idea:

1. add the widget to screen, config options pop up to enter the URL(s) of
the feed and frequency of update.
2. widget shows latest numbers (maybe 2 sets because of the space it has)
auto-updated.
3. clicking widget shows graph with menu option to change config.

Just that simple.

Thanks and God Bless,

Richard W. Pickett, Jr.

[android-developers] Watch video in WebView problem

2012-05-13 Thread Richard Sámela
Hallo,

I have implemented my app by TabActivity. There is a WebView as a root
of layout in the one on the child activities. Orientation of all
activities of project is setup to portrait in mainfest file.
Everything works well, but problem occured if I double click on
youtube video - change orientation of screen to landscape and open
video fullscreen. And after the video finish playing so all screens,
activities.. all has changed orientation to landscape as fullscreen
video. it's not appropriate for me. My application should work only
with portrait screen orientation. And I would like to ask you maybe
how to disable play video fullscreen in webview or how to change
screen orientation back to portrait after the video finishes.

Or if you can give me some other advices, I'll be very thankful to
you.
Here is example of declaration my WebView:

web = (WebView) findViewById(R.id.webView);
web.getSettings().setJavaScriptEnabled(true);
web.getSettings().setAllowFileAccess(true);
web.getSettings().setPluginsEnabled(true);
web.setWebViewClient(new CustomWebViewClient());
web.getSettings().setCacheMode(WebSettings.LOAD_NO_CACHE);
web.setScrollBarStyle(WebView.SCROLLBARS_INSIDE_OVERLAY);
web.loadUrl(URL);

thank you very much

[android-developers] Re: Livestreams on Android 2.2 and above

2012-05-04 Thread Richard Davison
You can try doing this by RTSP. VideoView will play RTSP streams. Or try a
flash player such as JWPlayer, but this doesn't have very good performance.

 I was able to make the video on demand fully functional using WebView.

 My problem now is with the live streams. I couldn't make the WebView
 and even VideoView to work. Also I've been researching about this for
 some time now, and found out that HTTP Live Stream is only available
 to Android 3.0 and above.

 Is what I'm trying to accomplish even possible. If so, how do I go
 about doing this? If you need more information, feel free to ask and I
 could provide them.

[android-developers] Android 2.2 VideoView Scaling

2012-05-04 Thread Richard Davison
Hi,

I'm trying to create an app that plays a rtsp stream. I'm having no problem
doing that, the problem I'm having is that the VideoView simply cuts out a
box of the dimensions I set it to, rather than scaling the video to fit the
dimensions. I have tried creating my own custom VideoView and overriding
the onMeasure method, but this does not scale the video to fit either, it
simply cuts out a box of the set dimensions. Does anyone have any idea how
to fix this, or if this is an already known bug with 2.2?

Thanks,
Rick

[android-developers] how to scrolling two textviews

2012-02-22 Thread Richard Sámela
I implemented textview which is automaticly scrolling by theese lines
of code:

android:ellipsize=marquee
android:focusable=true
android:focusableInTouchMode=true
android:marqueeRepeatLimit=marquee_forever
android:scrollHorizontally=true

this work perfectly. but there is focusable attribute important
because if I remove both of focusable attributes so textview doesn't
scroll.
But my problem is that textview is scrolling only if it has a focus.
And I would like to implement two textviews at one screen. There is a
problem when I set focusable attribute to both of texviews. focus get
only the first textview and that's the reason why is scrolling only
first textview.

Please help me how to achieve that both of the textviews will be
scrolling at same time.
Thank you very much for your help.

Re: [android-developers] Are bitmap layouts no longer considered Drawables in Ice Cream Sand....?

2011-12-19 Thread Richard Schilling
Apologies - that's a typo in my post. I meant to write:

LinearLayout xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;

android:layout_width=fill_parent

android:layout_height=fill_parent

android:orientation=vertical

android:background=@drawable/mybitmapdrawable

/LinearyLayout

That is what is coded in the application.

If the bitmap tag is considered a drawable, then why would I get the
error I got?

Perhaps I should file a bug ... I wonder.

[android-developers] Re: One process, two live Application objects?

2011-12-19 Thread Richard Schilling
This topic seems to have become re-relevant with the 4.0 release. I'm
seeing Application.onCreate being called multiple times. It looks like
what Diane described above with multiple processes getting their own
instance of Application is being more aggressively adhered to.

Would that be correct Diane?

This goes with the recommended design approach of storing global state in
shared preferences and databases and not relying on static members.
 Thoughts?

I have a case where I need to set up a global logging instance, and using
an Application object to store that global logger seems to be problematic.
For example, with this type of class we can get issues (see inline
comments):

public class MyApplication extends Application(){

 public static MyApplication APP;
 private Logger logger;

 public void onCreate(){
  super.onCreate();
  APP = this;

  getLogger().logp(Level.WARNING, classname, method,
message); // can cause an exception to be thrown

 }

 public Logger getLogger(){
  if (logger == null){
   logger = create your logger here.
  }
  return logger;
 }
}

It seems preferable to use this somewhere in your activity:

((MyApplication)context.getApplication()).getLogger().logp(evel.WARNING,
classname, method, message);

Or, perhaps just define a static factory object might be preferred and
avoid the use of an Application object alltogether ...

Thoughts?

Richard

[android-developers] Are bitmap layouts no longer considered Drawables in Ice Cream Sand....?

2011-12-16 Thread Richard Schilling
I've got this in my layout declaration in a file, let's call it
mybitmapdrawable.xml:

bitmap xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;

  android:src=@drawable/mygraphic

  android:tileMode=repeat

/

mygraphic is a .png file. Prior to 4.0 I don't see a problem with the
resource being inflated into a drawable. But on 4.0 and above when I have
this definition in mylayout.xml:

LinearLayout xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;

android:layout_width=fill_parent

android:layout_height=fill_parent

android:orientation=vertical

android:background=@drawable/mybitmapdrawable.xml

/LinearyLayout

I get an error at android.res.Resources.loadDrawable(Resources.java:1899):

12-16 16:50:02.567: E/AndroidRuntime(1542): Caused by:
android.content.res.Resources$NotFoundException: Resource is not a Drawable
(color or path): TypedValue{t=0x1/d=0x7f020095 a=-1 r=0x7f020095}

Did the interpretation of the bitmap tag change so it's no longer being
inflated as a drawable, or is this a bug in the new platform?

Thanks

Richard

I see TabActivity is deprecated.
But there are still some examples in the platform of making Activities

This is what we are doing: calling TabHost.addTab and passing in a TabSpec

Do you think that's a bad idea now that TabActivity is deprecated?
