[android-developers] Database access error causes force close

2014-12-05 Thread Jim Graham
I'm trying to use an SQLite table with Android (and for almost the first
time, period, but I familiarized myself with it using SQLite3 /
tclsh8.4), and I've run into a bit of a problem where I can't seem to
spot the error.

Here is the code where it's failing and force closing:

   ---  CUT HERE  ---

   // global - before start of DataBaseHelper class:
   private static final String TABLE_GRAINBRANDS = grainbrands;

   // much later in DataBaseHelper

   ListString grainBrandsList = new ArrayListString();
   String selectQuery = SELECT  * FROM  + TABLE_GRAINBRANDS;
   String brand;

   SQLiteDatabase db = this.getWritableDatabase();
   Cursor c = db.rawQuery(selectQuery, null); // This is the line (75)
   // that logcat says causes the force close

   ---  CUT HERE  ---

Surrounding logcat code:

---  CUT HERE  ---

I/ActivityManager(15152): Start proc com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2 for activity
  com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2/.AndGTbrew2: pid=28296 uid=10327
  gids={1015, 1028}

I/ActivityManager(15152): Displayed com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2/.AndGTbrew2: +3s183ms

E/AndroidRuntime(28296):
   at
com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2.DataBaseHelper.getGrainBrands(DataBaseHelper.java:175)

E/AndroidRuntime(28296):  at
com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2.AndGTbrew2$1.onClick(AndGTbrew2.java:92)

W/ActivityManager(15152):   Force finishing activity
com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2/.AndGTbrew2

W/ActivityManager(15152): Activity pause timeout for
   ActivityRecord{4280e468 com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2/.AndGTbrew2}

I/ActivityManager(15152): Process com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2 (pid 28296) has died.

---  CUT HERE  ---

Unfortunately, this error message doesn't tell me much, and while looking
between tutorials and my code here, I can't see what's wrong with it.

I tried to check in /data/data/com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2/ to see if gtbrew2.db
was there, but /data was empty, so I gather it's hidden. Good security,
normally, but a PITA right now.

Logcat does not show any of the errors that would be generated if the
dabase copy (from assets to the above) failed, so it should be there.

Does anyone see anything that I might have missed?

Thanks,
   --jim

You could try putting a try/catch block around the offending statement to
catch a generic exception, maybe finding out exactly what exception pops up
might give you a clue?

I tried that. The catch statement, which should have logged the error,
became the new source of the force close. And logcat did not give ANY
additional data.  :-(

I also tried deleting the database and re-creating it. It STILL shows up
as much smaller than the copy in assets, but I'm still assuming Android
quietly does some kind of compression on it.

Put a breakpoint in the catch clause and when it gets there examine the

 I tried that. The catch statement, which should have logged the error,
 became the new source of the force close. And logcat did not give ANY
 additional data.  :-(

 I also tried deleting the database and re-creating it. It STILL shows up
 as much smaller than the copy in assets, but I'm still assuming Android

Re: [android-developers] database question

2013-01-17 Thread dashman

Thanks for the responses.

It's a relatively simple database application - so it should fit fine.

I downloaded the windows command line program and created a database and
then copied it to the device emulator - and worked fine.

i was also able to read from the dafault database folder
(e.g./data/data/package/databases/).

but i don't see any problems with reading from SD card either.

For others, trying to create a database outside the device and then reading
the database on
the device - the COLLATORS flag is required.

SQLiteDatabase db = SQLiteDatabase.openDatabase(dbfile, null,
SQLiteDatabase.OPEN_READONLY|SQLiteDatabase.NO_LOCALIZED_COLLATORS );

Re: [android-developers] database question

2013-01-17 Thread Kristopher Micinski
I think people overemphasize this: SQLite will work for most
applications, unless you're running a production quality service where
you're already hiring a database administrator. For anything which
will be running purely on the phone, SQLite is a perfectly good
option, I've *never* seen a need for someone to go out to one of the
other database engines when they're writing just an app. (Maybe this
would make sense if you considered a webservice that interfaced to an
app.)

Yes, sqlite will work on Windows.

In an app specific directory

 3. can an app read multiple database files - e.g. all database files stored

Yes, you can write an sqlite helper which will open multiple database files.

 4. is there an app out there (in the store) that'll allow users to edit any
 standard database file.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditorhl=en

would be the top result from sqlite editor android

SQLite is the dominant database system on Android: it sounds like it
fits your purposes well. It stores database information as a file,
which can be edited, sent, etc..

[android-developers] Database design

2012-03-07 Thread joel witherspoon
I'm writing an app with a local SQLite DB stored on the device and I wanted
to periodically have the app write data to a database located on a web host
or Amazon's EC2.

EC2 (e.g.) will store numbers from multiple users databases into one
database, then crunch numbers from that database and store the statistics
into a series of tables. My device will pull the data from these tables to
display the statistics - most likely stored in another database located on
the device.
In short,

User updates the database on the tablet or phone --- Tablet or phone sends
data to EC2 (or other web host) --- EC2 crunches numbers and sends
calculated data (statistics) to tables --- Tablet or phone pulls data from
EC2 for display to user.

Would I be looking at a content provider at EC2 (e.g.), or should I use a
MySQL database on the EC2 end? What should my architecture be for this type
of setup?

You are leaking the database object, not a cursor.

I recommend you save the database object for reuse which will provide
better performance.

[android-developers] Database management

2012-02-03 Thread rodrigocarfer
So, I'm trying to access a db that does not belong to my app. I want
to read and maybe write in the database responsible for the messaging
storage (data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
mmssms.db). The problem is everywhere I search I'm told i cant access
a database that does not belong to my application, so I'm trying to
figure it out how can I solve this problem, I am root. Would be
effective copy the database from the data directory and put it in my
application's folder and then, after the management sent it back to
the original file directory ? I guess it would not be the best option,
i don't even know if this will work well. Please if anyone could give
me the directions I'd be very pleased.

P.S: I read somewhere you can do it using content providers, is that a
possible solution ?

Thanks

Rodrigo Ferreira

[android-developers] Database Access from Android Application

2012-01-22 Thread Matt Clark
I am making an application for users to take notes about other teams
they are competing against at robotics competitions, which will be
collaborative will all member of the same team across devices, so all
information will be stored in an SQL database on my webhost.
My first question is what would be the best way to give my application
access to the database? Is there some kind of SQL library that i could
just use insted of sending HTTP requests parsed by PHP files?
And Secondly, what would be the best way to store in information? All
members info in a single table, the query will just sort by id or the
author? Or have each member assigned to a different table of their
own?

Any and all input is greatly appreciated.
~Matt

That is not a good idea, for security reasons. That would mean that
your database is open for the script kiddies of the world to attack,
and that your database credentials are embedded in an APK for anyone
to extract.

Front the database with a Web service.

[android-developers] Database not created after insert, causing test to fail

2011-12-30 Thread barry
I have an app which uses a sqlite database and a ContentProvider to
serve up data. The eclipse project has a unit test which adds a record
to a database, retrieves it and asserts against the retrieved data:

public void testAddNewVehicle() { Vehicle vehicle1 = new
Vehicle(xyz, my car, 111f); long result =
VehicleProvider.addVehicle(getContext(), vehicle1);

assertTrue(1 == result);

ArrayListVehicle vehicles =
VehicleProvider.getVehicles(getContext()) ;

assertEquals(1, vehicles.size()); assertEquals(xyz,
vehicles.get(0).getRegistrationNo()); assertEquals(my car,
vehicles.get(0).getDescription()); assertEquals(111.0f,
vehicles.get(0).getInitialMileage()); }

My setup method deletes the database:

@Override protected void setUp() throws Exception { super.setUp();
deleteTestDatabase(); }

The test passes when I choose 'run', but if I choose debug, it fails
at theassertEquals(1, vehicles.size()); line. After stepping through
the code I have noticed something strange: even though the data
insertion succeeds and assertTrue(1 == result); passes, the database
does not exist on the file system at this point. It is only created
when VehicleProvider.getVehicles(getContext()); is called.

Both addVehicle() and getVehicles() result in a call
togetWritableDatabase(), so I don't see why the first call does not
create the database on disk. The addVehicle() method will eventually
call insert() (irrelevant code omitted):

@Override public Uri insert(Uri uri, ContentValues values) { String
table = table = Constants.VEHICLE_TABLE_NAME;

long rowID = UKMPGDataProvider.getWritableDatabase().in sert(table,
null, values);

// ---if added successfully---if (rowID  0) { Uri insertedRowUri =
insertedRowUri = ContentUris.withAppendedId(VEHICLE_CONTENT _URI,
rowID);

getContext().getContentResolver().notifyC hange(insertedRowUri, null);
return insertedRowUri; } throw new SQLException(Failed to insert row
into  + uri); }

And the getVehicle() will eventually call query():

@Override public Cursor query(Uri uri, String[] projection, String
selection, String[] selectionArgs, String sortOrder)
{ SQLiteQueryBuilder sqlBuilder = new SQLiteQueryBuilder();

sqlBuilder.setTables(uri.getPathSegments( ).get(0));

if (uriMatcher.match(uri) == VEHICLE_ID) // ---if getting a particular
vehicle

sqlBuilder.appendWhere(BaseColumns._ID +  =  +
uri.getPathSegments().get(1));

if (sortOrder == null || sortOrder == ) { sortOrder =
BaseColumns._ID; }

Cursor c = sqlBuilder.query(UKMPGDataProvider.getWri tableDatabase(),
projection, selection, selectionArgs, null, null, sortOrder);

// ---register to watch a content URI for changes---

c.setNotificationUri(getContext().getCont entResolver(), uri); return
c; }

As I say, the test passes when not in debug mode.

Re: [android-developers] database connectivity on real device

2011-12-01 Thread Narendra Singh Rathore
Hi again, my problem solved by storing my database in sdcard, but even now
I have to push my database for the first time I m using it.

Now, I want something likestoring my database in assets folder, so that
it can directly be installed with the apk directly, without using push.

Here is what I did.
1) Copied the database in assets folder.

Now, for accessing that database, I m doing---

2)
db=*SQLiteDatabase.openDatabase*(file:android_assets/MY_DATABASEfile://android_assets/MY_DATABASE,
null, SQLiteDatabase.CREATE_IF_NECESSARY);

Am I doing something wrong here, let me know if I m wrong.

I hope, u all got my problem..

[android-developers] database connectivity on real device

2011-11-29 Thread Narendra Singh Rathore
Hi all, plz help me connecting the sqlite database onto a real device.
I have connected it to the android emulator easily,
using push in DDMS - file Explorer - data/data/package name/ur_database.
It worked fine.

But, now when I going to use real device (Samsung Galaxy Pop) for database,
it is giving me database exception.
Even the former way of DDMS is unable to help me.

I m perfectly fine running other apps (without using database), on my
device.
I tried a lot, but *still waiting* for the result.

Suggest me what can I do to solve that...
