*A treasure lays buried deep at the bottom of an ocean. There are many
people who want to get there by risking life, be it theirs or someone
 else's.

*`Blue' is touted as Bollywood's first underwater, action adventure
 thriller. Directed by Anthony
 D'Souzahttp://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/anthony_d_souza/, the
movie is inspired from Hollywood flicks like `The Deep' or `Jaws', but
 it is not a copy.

Don't miss the film's slideshow (story in pix) at
 Bluehttp://www.apunkachoice.com/dyn/movies/hindi/blue/.

  http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php

The film is about a lost treasure, which three friends try to find undersea.
 Akshay Kumar http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/akshay_kumar/ , Sanjay
 Dutt http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/sanjay_dutt/ and Zayed
 Khanhttp://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/zayed_khan/play the
 respective roles.

But in this hunt for the treasure, there's deceit and betrayal by someone in
 the group.

 Lara Dutta http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/lara_dutta/ is paired
with Sanjay Dutt in the film. The actress did not know deep sea diving
before signing the film and underwent a rigorous Scuba diving training to
 prepare for her role.

 The movie's second heroine Katrina
 Kaifhttp://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/katrina_kaif/doesn't
have a big role. But director D'Souza says Kat will surprise the
 audiences with her role. Sunil
 Shettyhttp://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/sunil_shetty/also has
a brief role in the film.

Most of `Blue' has been shot in the Bahamas. Akshay, Sanjay and Zayed swam
with real sharks while shooting their stunts in the film.

While shooting one such stunt under water, Akshay Kumar had a narrow escape
when he accidentally hit his head against the metal of a sunken ship and
began bleeding. Blood attracted the sharks, but before any mishap could
happen, the actor was safely pulled above water.

To tone up his muscles, Sanjay Dutt hired the services of a special body
building trainer from the US – Lawrence Gonsalves, who guided the actor on
losing his former beefy body and developing a leaner physique.

Special water-resistant make-up was required for the film's leading lady
Lara Dutta. For that the producers roped in Hollywood make up artist
 Nikoletta Skarlatos.

`Blue' also feature a special appearance by Australian pop sensation Kylie
Minogue who has not only sung for the film but also shot a sizzling video
 with Akshay Kumar.

 Oscar winner A R
 Rahmanhttp://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/a_r_rahman/has
composed the tunes of the film's songs. In fact, Kylie Minogue agreed
 to
sing and dance to her song in the film because she was captivated by
 Rahman's composition.

The movie apparently also has an underwater song picturized on the entire
 cast.

With a budget of over Rs 100 crores, `Blue' is touted as Bollywood's most
expensive film to date. Made under the banner of Shri Ashtavinayak
Cinevision, the movie is set to release in May, 2009.

Rahman said that Slumdog Millionaire was definitely not his masterpiece,
Rahman said Jai Ho was more about a burst of joy and signified the
 release

 making
the songs phonetically catchy which clicked with the Western audience.

Though the Americans are clueless about the meaning of the song, words
 like
Jai Ho, O Saya, Ringa, ringa seem to have caught their fancy and am happy
that they are now listening to Indian music, said the Oscar winner, who
already has a couple of Hollywood offers at hand.

Music has no language and it is this aspect that the film has brought
 out,
said Rahman who humbly dedicated his double Oscars to all his countrymen.

I had only five per cent expectation about the Oscar for Slumdog
Millionaire. In fact, I was more bothered about my live performance and
 that
was extraordinary and its impact was much more, confessed a jet-lagged
Rahman at the first press meet after his Oscar award.

Originally, they wanted me to do a live performance of the Hindi remix

Admitting that he felt more joyous and comfortable with devotional songs
than beat songs, Rahman felt that the Oscars had doubled his

and that now his priority was doing good films, be it in Tamil, Hindi,
  Telugu or English.

My dream is to connect people with music and probably this incident has
unified all of us. I think this is a starting point of extraordinary
  things, he proclaimed.

When queried about the partying and gifts that followed the Oscars,
 Rahman
admitted that he had to leave all the champagne bottles back in the US
 owing
to Customs trouble and brought back only the 2 Oscar statuettes which
carried a cash award of $500 each.

After all that news, it was my kids who were more relieved to see me
 back.

Yeah, in that mail I did declare Arziyan great without going point by

JA together and during Khwaja mere khwaja as I mentioned that music
is by ARR, he said I did not see anything special (sadly enough. may
because it was in bad quality. also we know that ARR's music grows
 but he does not).
I am a known JA basher so I thought I can say about this song also.

khwaja song might be holding additional value for muslims due to its
religious connotations, and for general fans it might have got some high
weightage due to the anecdotes of ARR having composed it already and
then AG using it in the film.

But as a song, I find khwaja song quite barren and monotonous if I can
say that. It is a sort of introvert song giving a feel that a person
must be singing it within his heart and mind. It is his personal
pleasure. Others would not be able to connect to it.

Firstly, the song has some 1:20 initial alaaps that are quire boring to
say and kill the entire beauty of song that comes after that. It is more
like the sounds generated when a player tunes up his instruments
before starting to really play it up. Such a long wasted part is a sin
in current busy time. Those ya khwaja ji, moinuddin, gareeb nawaz are
without any lyrical or music value. So, I think the start itself is
 badly thought up.

But then the song starts with lovely music BUT, BUT BUT poor lyrics. A
typical lack of creativity in the monotonous, logically-built up
lyrics as is usually the case with Javed Akhtar.

 Khwaja Mere Khwaja
 Dil Mein Sama ja
 Bebaso ki Taqdeer
 Tu ne hai sawari

There is no rhyming, no deep devotion. All that dil mein sama ja type
of phrases had been used a 1000 times in cheap ladki-pataao songs in 60s
and here he comes up with that in a 21st century devotional song.

I would say that the major failure of the song remains in the poor
lyrics. Then, it fails in arrangements of vocals. None of the voices
carry and ethos and pathos. They are just singing an any song, not a
religious song for the most respected muslim personality of Indian
subcontinent. pronunciations are also not clear. that bebaso ki taqdeer
tu ne hai sanwari, has bebaso and tu ne pronounced so pooorly that one
has to strain to hear it and make the meaning of it. Sad that it is our
 man himself.

And then Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha has noor
pronounced so poorly by our man himself, and then there are alaaps, and
then the music gives the impression that the line is going to be
repeated, tere darbar mein khwaja - but they drop the line
unceremoniously and begin another line- sar jhukaate hain auliya.
What was so great in mentioning that auliya sar jhukate hain, so what,
is that why you feel respect for him? I think the respect should have
come from within, not due to seeing how others are respecting him.

and then tu hai khwaja - rutaba hai pyara chahne se tujhko
mustafa ko paya that xxx is still not clear to my aging ears. and
lastly that hai mere peer ka sadqa, tera daman hai thama, tali hai
bala hamari, chhaya hai khumar tera, jitna bhi rashq karein beshaq, to
ab hai XXX mere khwaja, tere kadmo ko mere rahnuma nahin chhodna gawara.
I don't get what exactly is the concept. No rhyming, no poetry, just
some words have got hammerred in. It must be the poorest lyrics by Javed.

I would say that ARR's voice is also not as sweet enough as he is famed
for, there is a rare shrillness, a hollow in ARR's voice that I don't
remember having heard in any other song. May be he was trying a new
voice but it didn't suit my ears.

all the internal aalaaps also are confusing, making it a classical song.
They are not even bringing a sense of a trance.

And as I already said once that JA music was a personal music and didn't
reflect the lavishness of the film.

I think I can describe now what I meant by that personal vs lavishness.
Listen to the music between 3:40 - 4:05. That Persian sort of. Now, that
is what I call a royal music, that has lavishness, that has luxury, that
is group music, public music. Also the instrument that stars playing at
the backdrop at about 6:10 and continues till the end of song. that

Hi,

I read this very interesting incident in the latest issue Kumudam magazine,
which came out today! This is from actress Meera Jasmine's interview.

Meera talks about her experience in Australia, where she went for the shooting
of a Vijaykanth's movie directed by Vikraman.

On the way to Sydney from Canberra, we saw noticed a bungalow inside a
forest. Vikraman suggested that we could shoot there. When Vikraman asked the
bungalow owner for permission, the owner demanded lots of money. Vikraman tried
to convince him, by talking about the movie, about us, where we are from,
etc... When we told him that we're from Tamilnadu, the owner's face brightened
up! 'Oh.. are you from AR Rahman's town?' and he hugged vikraman. 'You dont
even have to pay me to shoot here. You are from the land of composer of
Slumdog! It wont be right to demand rent from you!

I was s excited to read this!!!
Not just fame, but the love for him too is spreading all over the world!!!

Khwaja song - my impression (Re: [arr] Let's keep in mind the attitudes and exposure of the elders)

2009-03-13 Thread Chord
There are quite a few ARR songs that I don't particularly like, but for me,
Khwaja is not one of them. Oh well, to each their own.

have elaborated point by point what I find it lacking in.

Yeah, in that mail I did declare Arziyan great without going point by

is by ARR, he said I did not see anything special (sadly enough. may
because it was in bad quality. also we know that ARR's music grows
  but he does not).

I think I can describe now what I meant by that personal vs

There are many people around me some Rahmaniacs too...who have permanently
registered in their minds that few of the compositions which have ARR tag are
not really and genuinely come out of ARR personally...!!!  Let me inform you
all that i dont want to take away the credits from ARR at allits just a

Many are of the thought that some of the ARR compositions for the films
like Parasuram, Udhaya, Alli Arjuna (Though many tracks were re-used from 1947
Earth!), and many others are not personally handled by ARR...but by his
Assistants This is largely due to his ultra busy schedule...!!! But i think

Malaysia Vasudevan in Poo pookum Oosai and Malgudi Subha in Thanga Thamarai
magale from Minasara kanavu can be considered as humming? If so, they both had

[arr] A.R Rehman's song burnt over the credits

2009-03-13 Thread Vithur
The title pretty much gives away the entire plot of this forgettable
romantic and supposedly comedy film, more appropriately the film should've
been titled 'Glitch' for the word is monotonous throughout the first half.
Secondly, the central theme seems to be accidentally inspired from the
Will Smith [Images http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=will
smith] starrer *Hitch*; and this could've been a terrible sequel.

This devoid-of-interesting-twist-and-turns love triangle leaves you nothing
but bemused as it reaches the rosy and commercially unavoidable happy
ending, with the only surprise in it being A.R Rehman's song burnt over the
credits as you lazily crawl towards the exit door. Asian audiences will
probably savour the subtle snips of Bollywood *ragas* but if not for a
one-time-watch this accident should be best avoided.

happening of Jai Ho.No matter how famous and gifted our boss was before Oscar
winning he was always
undermined by some sectors of People, that was also partial due to our boss's
humbleness.Talkin bout our thala's humbleness the best example of people
exploiting our thala's good nature is the facilitation function, many of the
veterans were talking non relevant stuff to our boss, only MSV,madam
Janaki, vidyasagar and one very old member of the music fertility talked bout
our thala in great manner, not to miss out uncle AVM Saravanan who said great
things bout our boss, this is not the first he mentioned bout our thala, he
also said when I met him in India( sivaji release time).Nevertheless our
Japanese,Arab,Chinese, European,American and so on bros never failed to
recognize our boss's talent before, this is why ARR is truly international.

Coming back to the Malaysia concert experience, it is one of the best moment in
my life, when i went to take pic with our thala who was damm tired after a
splendid concert, never failed to greet me and my bro and took pics with us,
thats the time i realized how great ARR is.All praises to almighty Talent is
something everyone can cultivate but good nature is something special these
what completes our thala. I pray hard that he remains the same and contribute
in large scale to ARR foundation to end poverty.Like every other ARR fan I
would like to witness the genius while his working in the studio, wonder when
this will happen

If you remember, AR once said in an interview that he does not allow any
sub-standard work to get out of the studio. Some of the songs in these
movies you mentioned might be an exception for various reasons which we are
not sure. But I feel that he might have not personally been there in the
studio but would have definitely composed the tunes remotely and monitored
the mixing. The main problem with few songs were that they lacked AR's class
in orchestration. Still few songs like Udhaya Udhaya are thoroughly
enjoyable.

*Arvind Narayanan writes in to say that he ran into Rahman twice in a day.
He shares his memories:*

I met A R Rahman twice at the Mumbai

While I landed in Mumbai in the morning, I saw a crowd at the car pickup
area. When I got closer, I realised that Rahman was being mobbed for
autographs.

I waited my turn and even though I was one of the last in the queue, he was
gracious enough to sign an autograph and pose for a photograph with me.

I wanted to talk to him but held back as he was looking hassled. Plus, he
was busy speaking and texting on his mobile.

Later, when I went to the airline lounge, I ran into Rahman
again. He was sitting all alone, waiting for a flight to Chennai. I sat next
to him and spoke for about 10 minutes. He was very polite and humble and
answered my questions patiently. I would have continued talking but there
were a few more fans who wanted to talk to him so I bid him goodbye.

Looking back, I realised that he had no airs at all. He was such a nice
gentleman. It was a dream come true for me.

*Keep those memories coming moviesrev...@rediff.co.in in. The world would

ARR can do any genre infect he even creates his own genres like the songs in AE
(Fanna,Jana gana mana and good bye nunba), and why go far take 2008 for example
jodha akbar and janue tu two diffrent stuffs. Bala is not ready for our thala's
roller coaster ride of experiments, so its his loss. Furthermore, our thala is
gonna be busy with his pending works, and Bala also not a creative director his
quite a monotones and Stereotypic who like to always portray mentally disorder
or weird main character from Sethu till now, unlike Mani who gives variety, so
no regrets.

[arr] I have rarely come across somebody who is so passionate about the fight against poverty

2009-03-13 Thread Madhavan Rajan
http://endpoverty2015.org/english/news/millennium-campaign-supporter-becomes-first-indian-artist-win-two-oscars/27/feb/09

Composer and long-time UN Millennium Campaign supporter A.R. Rahman took
home two Oscars at the Academy Awards this Sunday, for best original score
and best original song in the hit film Slumdog Millionaire. In accepting
the awards, Rahman became the first Indian artist to win two Oscars.

Rahman has long been a supporter of the Millennium Development Goals. In
2007, he served as one of three judges evaluating competing singers on
Mission Ustaad, a blockbuster television program in India with the mission
of making a difference by promoting the Millennium Development Goals.
Rahman has also performed at an anti-poverty concert in Delhi, launched an
anti-poverty song entitled Pray for Me Brother and appeared in two of the
Millennium Campaign's public service announcements.

The UN Millennium Campaign works with a wide range of celebrities across
the world, but I have rarely come across somebody who is so passionate about
the fight against poverty, and that too with such humility, said Salil
Shetty, Director of the UN Millennium Campaign. A lot of this, no doubt,
comes from his own lived experience of hardship and a humble beginning. We
don't see Rahman purely as a celebrity advocate for the Millennium
Development Goals and the UN, but much more than that. He is really a fellow
campaigner against poverty and injustice.

The Millennium Campaign joins with fans around the globe in congratulating
Rahman!

Here is the criteria for *official arr fan* title that I came up with. I
believe this is a true test to seperate out water from milk, rhetoric from

music and melody. sending 100 mails a day doesn't qualify someone to be an
arr fan. there are people who are fan of being a fan of arr. we are not
interested in knowing whether you are a fan or not. all the self-proclaimed
fans can judge themselves if they really deserve this title.

just take these two quizzes.. with 3 minutes time limit for a total of 40
questions. maximum two attempts for each question. after you are done, use
the following table and judge yourself.

If your total score , T is

36 T 40 == You are Officially True and Honest Rahman fan.

31  T  35 == Official Rahman fan

26  T  30 == just another arr fan

T 25 == well, you may give a title for yourself cuz we aint bothered if

'Rahman had no airs at all'

March 13, 2009 11:59 IST

We asked readers if they had ever met Oscar winning composer A R Rahman
[Images], and we got quite a response.
Arvind Narayanan writes in to say that he ran into Rahman twice in a day. He
shares his memories:
I met A R Rahman twice at the Mumbai [Images] airport last September.
Plus, he was
busy speaking and texting on his mobile.
Later, when I went to the airline lounge, I ran into Rahman
again. He was sitting all alone, waiting for a flight to Chennai. I sat next to
him and spoke for about 10 minutes. He was very polite and humble and answered
my questions patiently. I would have continued talking but there were a few
more fans who wanted to talk to him so I bid him goodbye.
Looking back, I realised that he had no airs at all. He was such a nice
gentleman. It was a dream come true for me.
Keep those memories coming in. The world would love to hear about Rahman.

[arr] Jai Ho is by far the biggest chart beneficiary of an Oscar Best Song win

2009-03-13 Thread userind
Source -
http://idolator.com/5169688/the-reverse-swift-cyrus-scales-charts-with-l\
ess-funky-more-honky-tonk

Snippets from the post...

• While I was on hiatus last week, the biggest mover on the Hot 100
was Jai Ho, A.R. Rahman's energizing theme from Slumdog Millionaire.
The song exploded from No. 100 up to No. 15 in the week just after the
song and the movie won their respective Oscars. (This week, it's back
down to No. 36.) Digital sales of the song were the primary catalyst for
last week's big move, catapulting from about 22,000 in the week leading
up to Oscar Sunday, to 130,000 the week after, a nearly sixfold
increase. But Top 40 radio jumped on the song also; it ranked 47th among
all songs at pop radio last week.

The bad news: most of that airplay is coming from the remix featuring
vocals from lead Pussycat Doll (and Idolator punchline) Nicole
Scherzinger. Hence, on the Hot 100, the song's full credits read, Jai
Ho! (You Are My Destiny), by A.R. Rahman The Pussycat Dolls
featuring Nicole Scherzinger. (Smells like the solo-career-stoking
credit Wham! featuring George Michael used for Careless Whisper back
in the day.)

The good news: digital-song buyers have better taste than radio
programmers - Rahman's original recording is handily outselling the PCD
remix. In the week just after the Oscars, the ratio was nearly
four-to-one in favor of Rahman by himself (103,000 downloads, versus
27,000 for the PCD version). This week, the ratio's down to about
two-to-one, but Rahman still outsells La Scherz (36,000 to 18,000).

One last, fun tidbit: Best as I can tell-going just by Hot 100 data over
the last 50 years - Jai Ho is by far the biggest chart beneficiary of
an Oscar Best Song win in history. No song has ever risen dozens of
spaces up the chart just one week after the ceremony.

Mostly, that has to do with timing. Jai Ho is an emerging hit right
now, whereas most years, the ultimate award-winner either wasn't a chart
hit at all, or it had already topped the charts weeks or even months
before the Oscar ceremony (e.g., 1971's Theme from Shaft, 1978's Last
Dance, 1986's Take My Breath Away, 1997's My Heart Will Go On,
2002's Lose Yourself, among many others). Among the few songs that
needed the Oscar boost to fly up the charts, to varying degrees, were
such '70s winners as Barbra Streisand's The Way We Were and
Evergreen; the Carpenters' cover of For All We Know; Maureen
McGovern's The Morning After; and Keith Carradine's I'm Easy. And
before Jai Ho, the Oscar winner with the most visible improvement in
the week right after the ceremony was Bruce Springsteen's 1993 winner
Streets of Philadelphia, which crept up a couple of spaces to enter
the Top 10 in April 1994, right after the Boss collected his statue.

Re: Khwaja song - my impression (Re: [arr] Let's keep in mind the attitudes and exposure of the elders)

2009-03-13 Thread Shah Navas
I disagree.

  in fact we watched

And then Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha has noor
pronounced so poorly by our man himself, and then there are alaaps, and
then the music gives the impression that the line is going to be
repeated, tere darbar mein khwaja - but they drop the line
unceremoniously and begin another line - sar jhukaate hain auliya.

Also the instrument that stars playing at
the backdrop at about 6:10 and continues till the end of song. that
single instrument is giving a royal touch to the song. That type of
music is what I expected to be everywhere in JA music and background,
but no, we didn't get that. Our man had different ideas about music
suitable for the emperor of India. Compare the above two sounds to the
sound at 1:20-1:45. Now this 1:20 sound is what I call a personal sound,
lacking royal touch. It is a commoner's, a poor man's sound, now
 suitable for a period film.

Seeing so many members liking the song so much, mentioning it as their
most fav song, etc., I tried to listen to it several times, but this is
one song of ARR that I found lacking in almost each and every aspect.

 Compare that to D6's Arziyaan.

In my view, IR excels in the kind of music Bala's movies demands. No doubt I
would to like to see ARR work on such subjects - which is very rustic. I
somehow feel ARR's work is too polished for such themes. Nobody offers him
such themes anymore. Gone are the days of Uzhavan, Kizhakku Cheemaiyile and
Sangamam. ARR's music is too international now. I would definitely like to
see if ARR could get to bare basics these days like IR does. The man never
ceases to surprise.

The thread has so far been in good spirit. I don't see anything hideous
here. We can't discuss without pointing the names of people (of course not
when speaking about members, but with celebrities and public personalities
that's the way it has to be). ARR asked not to abuse. We are always within
our rights to compare different works, not people.

I want to respect ARR's request. So I'm reserving my comments. Better
