I've been using Frontline TopSpot for years now, it's the best tick
product that I've ever found. Maybe it's only designed for American
ticks? It's not a repellant, but it is supposed to kill the vermin
within 18 hours of their getting onto the dog. I've always found it to

vacuum for wood floors...lindhaus F5?

Does anybody have the Lindhaus F5 vacuum.? It is a small upright made for

the doggy fur off the wood floor in 2 rooms of my home.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well.

Hi Michaela,
I think I may have just been lucky but I recall the time at the US
Nationals at Rhode Island where it seemed a lot of people were picking
ticks off their dogs. I had bathed my dogs prior to travelling with Kennel
Flea and Louse Shampoo and while I always rinse thoroughly some residual
effect may have been at play because my friend's nimble fingers (she's a
seasoned tick hunter) never found one:-) I have since changed shampoos
because it has been some years since my kitties went to heaven and they
were my greatest flea hosts. I now use Miracle Coat that has tea tree oil
in it and I have used body wash with tea tree oil for myself in blackfly
season and have found less trouble with these nasty biting bugs so figured
it was acting as a repellent in the dog shampoo too. Worth a try if you
have it in England:-)

Welcome to the world of mini-vans:-) I love my van and my dogs ride
comfortably in it, I have a Chrysler Dodge Sport which is the longer

non-essential seats in the back. It has split air conditioning which is
nice for long journeys and we have fabric seats which grant you get a bit
hairy. I think leather is nice but you will probably find they scratch,
besides as you get more Berners you'll likely take out the back seats! You
can always go the whole hog and have seat covers and dangling dice:-)

Pat,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the tick has to bite the dog in order to die.
Also, the tick must be removed within 24 hours or can impart whatever it is
infected with --??? Am I right?

I use Frontline Plus but will be using Frontline (without the Plus) since it
showed no added benefits. I do not put it on once a month. The ticks I
pull off are either dead or sluggish. When they are a tad livelier, I
reapply Frontline so I'm putting it on about every 6-8 weeks, not 4 weeks.

Right now I have about 25% snow which will probably disappear today.
Everything is thick and muddy and oozy. I am anticipating a difficult
tick/flea/mosquito filled Spring. Sigh.

No one has mentioned a spray deterrent. They don't work??

The active ingredients in BioSpot is:
 45% Permethrin
  5% Pyriproxyfen
The down side to the permethrins that I've found by doing a quick scan are:
it is toxic to cats in the quantity needed to be effective on dogs
it is not waterproof and will wash off
it has been in use for 20 years and many fleas are now resistant
I believe the pyriproxyfen is an insect growth regulator?

seats-the driver seat wore out completely in 5 years. My current one has

can be easily removed if a HUMAN has to sit on it. Cabela's, or other
sporting goods catalogs have seat covers for dogs. I was thinking of
getting leather on my next car-I was told the leather they use now is
stronger than what was used previously, but that was from a car salesman. I
think the maintenance on the leather is easier. I worry more about the

Re: BMD Breeders in Eastern PA

2003-03-18 Thread Ruth Reynolds
We found information from one breeder that sounded good, however we sent
them an e-mail as was requested and have not heard anything since. My
question to you fine folks, can anyone suggest a reputable breeder(s) in the
eastern PA area? We are about an hour outside of Philadelphia near
Allentown, PA. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Andrew,

There's nothing like personal references for breeders, particularly
references from folks who had problems with their dog and received support
from their breeders. Using the Berner-l with discretion for references is a
good idea. Here's a story you might find interesting.

A woman bought a dog from me several years ago and let me two and a half
years later she wanted another. I told her I would not have pups available
until later in the year. She came across a woman with a BMD pup in her
community who was happy with her puppy. She contacted the breeder of that
puppy and bought one. She was having some trouble with her first Berner and
depression when the new pup entered the picture so she contacted me. Turns
out she bought her second Berner from one of the most notorious puppy
producers in her region of the country, a breeder about whom a number of
reports of non-support including not supplying registration papers, have
been reported to the BMDCA. So please be careful. In my experience,
personal recommendations from someone I don't know whose research skills I
don't know, are most valuable when they come from folks who had trouble with
their dog and received support from their dog's breeder.

In short while, the BMDCA will have available a Breed Stewards List which
will include folks in our club who are breeders and/or owners who volunteer
to help educate the public about the breed and availabilty of their pups.
At this time however the list is not yet available and we encourage
inquirers to network through regional BMD clubs to find breeders in their
area of the country.

Please recognize conscientious breeders are scarce in some parts of the
country and it may be necessary, due to demand, to travel away from home
several hundred miles to find the right dog for you.

To contact the BMD clubs in your region of the country, find links and
contacts for them at www.bmdca.org in the InfoSeries link within the article
titled Clubs Resources and More. Memberships of each regional BMD club
include conscientious breeders through whom you can network to locate pups
which will be available in the next six months typically.

Plan to send inquiries to a dozen breeders in order to find one or two who
meet your own criteria of conscientiousness and availability within the
timeframe you wish to work.

There's more information to help inquirers identify conscientious breeders
in the article titled Tips on Buying a Berner which is also found in the
Info Series at the BMDCA.org website.

Most inquirers want a list of reputable breeders, thinking they will have
a better chance of getting a good quality dog from someone approved or
licensed. While that might be true, in reality, dog clubs cannot police
their memberships per se. So it's quite possible a breeder we think is
reputable, actually is not. We won't find that out for some time. Meanwhile
the buyers who placed trust in the less than reputable breeder's false
reputation are mislead.

It's preferable for inquirers to be provided with names of persons who
breed who are members of clubs AND to be provided with a means to know and
identify those things that distinguish conscientious breeders from others.
I hope you'll find we've addressed these issues in the materials to which
inquirers are directed at our website.

Good luck in your search for the right dog for you!

Much of what Pat Long has said regarding health of the offspring in in-line

mention litter size, but did mention other health-related problems that are
exacerbated with in-line breeding. What was also interesting was Goodman's
comment that canines are rarely infertile, rather the problem is generally
an error in accurately predicting the fertile period for the bitch.

GMC/Chrevolet Warning!!! Hazardous to Dogs!!!

2003-03-18 Thread Sara Steele
Hi All,
I have a GMC Safari (it's Chevrolet equivalent is the Astro), which has rear
door problem, which is dangerous to dogs. If the automatic (electronic)
control is not working (due to some problem, like a fuse blowing out or
other damage to the electrical system), there is no manual way to open the
rear doors! Those of us dog people who have these vehicles, got them so that
we could take advantage of those rear doors, by facing our crates to the
rear and having our dogs enter and exit from the rear.
If the doors are not operable, then we have no way of getting the dogs out
in (or out) an emergency. If the automatic system blows out, we are faced
with having to turn the crates around, with dogs averaging 90-110 lb INSIDE
these crates, in order to get our dogs out. We have had to do this, now,
three times (!), when the electrical/automatic system failed for various
reasons. Fortunately, none of these three times was in an emergency, when
time was of essence. My GMC Safari is at the dealer service shop right now
having its eletrical system worked on. I asked whether they could fix it so
that the rear doors have a manual option. They said no, it is not possible.
I told them that dogs could die because of this. He told me, in so many
words, tough s.., very few of GMC's customers around the world use these
vehicles for dogs. I explained to him that should all the dog people around
the world stop buying the GMC Safari and Chevrolet Astro, GMC's pocket book
would notice it.

After my recalcitrant vehicle comes back from the GMC shop, I am taking it
to STS. I talked, today, to a mechanic there, and he thinks he might be able
to render the rear doors manual. I will let you all know how this comes out.
In the meantime, avoid getting the GMC vehicles, as not having an option for
manual operation for the rear doors could be lethal to your dogs!!! I will
be writing a letter to GMC about this. I may also send cc's to the AKC, CKC,
etc---get the word out.

Any feedback on this subject?

posted gleefully in plain text for Donna and Sherman

Open OB From Sherman's view point:

The morning of March 8th, Mom got up early. I knew we were going on a trip even
though Mom tried to hide it. She didn't want me to wake up Dad. He was staying home
and that means one thing to me. Fun Time. Boy, oh boy, Aunt Debbie finally got here
and we left. We rode for several hours before Mom slowed the car down and I could see
some Berners, my kind of people. Wow, am I going to have fun. Hey, I know lots of
these people and their Berner buddies. Gotta visit, oh all right, we can walk around
outside for a few minutes but then it's back inside to visit and enjoy. What is Mom
watching? Oh, it's that obedience stuff. I bet Mom thinks we can do it too, after
all, I let her work real hard and I tried to teach her the right way to do this stuff.
Hey, look, puppies and I see Nick and there's another youngster I haven't met yet.
OK, OK Mom, I'll pay attention. Honest! Where is the red bag? What? You hid it.
Well, and all too soon for me I must say it is our tu!
rn. This will be just fine. Look at all the Berners and their buddies sitting around
the ring. Aha a captive audience!

Now believe this, I really tried to be good for Mom. Thank goodness, she finally took
the leash off, now if she would just get rid of this blooming collar. Oh well, you
can't have everything. Yeah, I know. Pay attention! Sherman heel. Wait Mom stopped
already, she's looking at me. Well, I guess I can sit but she didn't wait. She's
saying heel already. OK, we can do this. Say, what's that there on the floor. Oh,
oh, we went by too fast. I'll check it out later. Oops, too fast again. Now of all
things, would you believe that Mom is telling the judge about the food on the floor.
She shouldn't have worried, I was going to get it eventually.

Mom is ready again, I know, pay attention. I smiled at Mom real nice, she said heel
and off we went again. Look, real people in here with us, I'll just wind myself
around the first ones legs, then maybe she will pet me and if not then it is still the
shortest way around. Mom, don't go so fast. Good you stopped and I guess I can sit
and look good. Here we go again. I would really like to visit but Mom just keeps
going. About time she stopped again and I sat again. Good, now Mom pets me but she
doesn't sound real thrilled. She actually asked me what kind of heeling was that?
Then it is sit straight, stand, then stay while she walks away and the judge comes
over to give me some pats. Strange though he doesn't say anything to me, just pats and
walks away and then Mom comes back. She's a little happier now and tells me to come
over here with her. That's Mom, giving orders again, but I can do that, then it's
Sherman sit but that's fine and I give Mom a real big smile. !
Whoops, now she wants me to stay here while she goes to the other side of the ring. I
hear Sherman come, so I start across the ring toward Mom. What? Down? OK, time to
collapse very slowly and comfortably to the floor, chin down, totally comfortable.
This is great! I'll just watch Mom for now. Then it's Sherman come. I'm sure that
was Mom but I really am comfortable, oh now it is the hand signal. Nah, I think I'll
just stay here. SHERMAN means I better go to Mom right now but not too quick. Time
for more pets, strange sweet talk and back to the other side of the ring. It's sit
again and hey, that's my dumbbell that Mom has. Yes, Mom I know you want my
attention. Mom threw the dumbbell, then she tells me to take it. I go right out,
look around, look at the dumbbell then at Mom and back at the dumbbell. Wait! I
smell food. Let me find it. I know it is here somewhere, so nose to the ring mat I
start to search and I know I can find it. Now I hear SHERMAN COME.!
I guess I better go, as now someone took the dumbbell and the food is gone.

What do you mean we're doing this again? Isn't once enough? All right, sit, smile
pretty, then Mom tosses the dumbbell and again she says take it. Naturally being a
very obedient Berner, I go right to the dumbbell. Wait, what's that over there on my
left. Wow, that Berner puppy is sure having a good time. What else is going on, who
else is here? Let me check out the floor. Oh, there is that stupid dumbbell. HELLO!
I'm supposed to pick it up. I do, then put it back down. Oh no, now I hear SHERMAN
TAKE IT. OK, pick it up and take it to Mom, stop a short distance in front of her
then spit it out at her. Oooo, she's not smiling, she is pointing at the dumbbell.
OK pick it up, come closer then spit it out again. Now she tells me you know better
than that. What do you mean we are not done yet? You want what? Me to come over
there with you? Yeah, I can do that and even show a little enthusiasm. Boy, can I
fool Mom but at least she is smiling so I'll smile back wh!
ile she tells me to wait

Re: My Way; Sherman and Donna, part 2

2003-03-18 Thread berner1
posted in plain text for Donna:

Graduate Novice from MY point of View

We enter the ring for the heel free exercise. Sherman appears ready, off we go and
other than a few crooked sits he actually did a very nice job. Not quite as nice on
the figure 8. He was wrapping himself around the poles legs looking for some hugs
I'm sure, so he really was lagging. All in all not too bad.

Moving stand for exam. Very nice and really enjoyed standing, looking handsome and
being patted by the judge.

Moving drop on recall. Went very well, went down very nicely but he looked a little
too comfortable to me. I was right, he was. He just laid there watching me smile
while I thought What are you doing. Gave hand signal and he just watched and
watched some more. Called again Sherman and he decided it was time to come to visit
me but he went right to heel but it was a very nice finish even if he forgot the front.

Dumbbell recall. We are at the far end of the ring, I give Sherman the dumbbell which
he is now holding behind his front canines with his mouth open. I leave, get to the
other side and turn around just in time to see the judge picking the dumbbell up from
the floor and giving it to Sherman. Then the judge reaches over and taps Sherman
under the chin and said hold it. Sherman still had it behind the front canines with
his mouth open. Kind of a balancing act. I called him, he came and when nearing me
while still in motion he spit the dumbbell out at me. I could reach it but barely.
Forget the front and finish, Sherman just stood there and grinned.

Recall over the broadjump. With a little enthusiasm I got Sherman over to the broad
jump, sitting very nicely and actually paying attention to me. Ah, there is hope yet.
I called him, he paraded up to the broad jump and proceeded to place his feet in
between each and every board without touching any of them and sat very nicely in front
and did a very nice finish.

Long down. There is nothing unusual about this as this is Sherman's favorite
exercise. He gets very comfortable, chin down and when I return that is exactly where
he is. I know he gazes around on occasion so that he doesn't miss anything and knows
where everyone is but he stays there.

Now we are leaving the ring, thanking the judge who tells me that it is a good thing
that I have a sense of humor and Sherman hears the judge tell me not to trade him in
for a cat. Of course, I wouldn't and of course Sherman gave the judge a very big grin.

Riding in Cars with Berners

2003-03-18 Thread Radha Iyengar
So, I currently have a 1996 Toyota Rav4 which I
thought would be a fine sized SUV for me, my boyfriend
and my dog, Smokey. Turns out we have decidied this
car is far too small, especially if we intend to add
something else (baby or puppy) to our lives. So we
have decided to buy a new SUV, to replace our aging
Rav. Now we have been thinking about getting the
Honda Element, or the Toyota Highlander. I was
wondering if anyone had experiences with either of
these cars.

Also, currently I do not have any restraint system in
my car for my dog (no flames please--I am working on
it). I used to have this doggie seatbelt but Smokey
can't sit comfortably on the seat so the belt is
really not working. I can't fit a crate that Smokey
could fit so that's out. So I was wondering if anyone
had any suggestions.

Thank you,
Radha

Re: Real Rescue Phone Calls....sigh....

2003-03-18 Thread berner1
Forwarded in plain text for Vilma - for all of you who do rescue!

Pat

--

It was originally from the Brittany list, but I have heard some of these excuses
(especially #8!) given to me by people who no longer wanted their Cardigans (or Pems,
or Dachshunds).

Kathy
*
You have reached the rescue phone. Due to the high volume of calls we have been
receiving, please listen closely to the following options and choose the one that best
describes your situation:

Press 1 if you think we are veterinarians and want free medical advice.

Press 2 if you know we are a rescue organization but want to save money and have us
give you free, untrained medical advice anyway.

Press 3 if you make $200,000 a year but still want us to pay to spay the stray in
your yard (house).

Press 4 if you have a 10-year-old Brittany and your 15-year-old son has suddenly
become allergic and you need to find the Britt a new home right away.

Press 5 if you have three Brittanys, had a baby and want to get rid of your Britts
because you are the only person in the world to have a baby and Brittanys at the same
time.

Press 6 if you have three Brittanys, had a baby and want to place the baby.

Press 7 if you have a dying Brittany and you want to place it into another home so you
can save the medical costs and not go through the trauma of watching it die.

Press 8 if you just got a brand new puppy and your old Brittany is having problems
adjusting so you want to get rid of the old one right away.

Press 9 if your Brittany puppy has grown up and is no longer small and cute and you
want to trade it in for a new model.

Press 10 if you are elderly and want to adopt a Brittany puppy who is not active and
is going to outlive you.

Press 11 if your relative has died and you don't want to care for their elderly
Brittany because it doesn't fit your lifestyle.

Press 12 if you are moving today and need to immediately place your 80 pound,
8-year-old Brittany.

Press 13 if you want an unpaid volunteer to come to your home today and pick up the
Brittany you no longer want.

Press 14 if you have been feeding and caring for a stray for the last year, are
moving and suddenly determine it's not your Brittany.

Press 15 if you are calling at 6 a.m. to make sure you wake me up before I have to go
to work so you can drop a Brittany off on your way to work.

Press 16 to leave us an anonymous garbled message, letting us know you have left a
Brittany in our yard in the middle of January, which is in fact, better than just
leaving the Britt with no message.

Press 17 if you are going to get angry because we are not going to take your Brittany
that you have had for fifteen years, because it is not our responsibility.

Press 18 if you are going to threaten to take your ten year old Brittany to be
euthanized because I won't take it.

Press 19 if you're going to get angry because the volunteers had the audacity to go on
vacation and leave the Britts in care of a trusted volunteer who is not authorized to
take your personal pet.

Press 20 if you want one of our perfectly trained, housebroken, kid and cat friendly
purebred Brittanys that we have an abundance of.

Press 21 if you want us to take your Brittany that has a slight aggression problem,
(i.e. has only bitten a few people and killed your neighbor's cats).

Press 22 if you have already called once and been told we don't take personal
surrenders but thought you would get a different person this time with a different
answer.

Press 23 if you want us to use space that would go to a stray to board your personal
Brittany while you are on vacation, free of charge, of course.

Press 24 if it is Christmas Eve or Easter morning and you want me to deliver an eight
week old puppy to your house by 6:30 am before your kids wake up.

Press 25 if you want us to take your female Brittany who has already had ten litters,
but we can't spay her because she is pregnant again and it is against your religion.

Press 26 if you're lying to make one of our younger volunteers feel bad and take your
personal pet off your hands.

Press 27 if your two year old male Brittany is marking all over your house but you
just haven't gotten around to having him neutered.

Press 28 if you previously had an outdoor only Brittany and are calling because she is
suddenly pregnant.

Press 29 if you have done everything to housebreak your Britt and have had no
success but you don't want to crate the dog because it is cruel.

Press 30 if your Brittany doesn't match your new furniture and you need a different
color or breed.

And finally, press 31 if your new boyfriend or girlfriend doesn't like your Brittany
and you are too stupid to get rid of the new friend (who will dump you in the next
month anyway) instead of the Brittany.

For those of you laughing or shaking your heads in disbelief, please be assured ALL of
these calls have happened, except for No. 6.

Re: Frontline

2003-03-18 Thread BMDwags
Hi Everyone-

I was told by my holistic vet last year, that Frontline is the only tick
product that does not work systemically. In other words...it does not enter
the bloodstream and infect the internal organs of the pets. It only works
from the hair follicle level. From what I understand, the tick does not have
to bite the dog...it only needs to have contact with the skin/hair. Applying
the product correctly is crucial. A pharmaceutical rep recommended to me
that we instruct clients to remove leather and nylon collars prior to
applying the product, so it can travel to the skin on the dog's head without
getting absorbed by the collar. It is also important to get the full amount
inside the vial onto the pet's skin...not the hair around the application
site. The product is wasted if it is only emptied onto the hair itself.
Another important step is to not bathe the dog (or cat) at least 2 days
either before or after the Frontline application. An oily haircoat helps the
product work most effectively. As other listers have stated...remember,
Frontline (and other products such as BioSpot, PrevenTic Collars, etc) are
not 'repellants'...you WILL find ticks on your pet. The objective is to make
them neurologic and kill them before they have the opportunity to transmit
disease...OR crawl off the dog or cat and climb on you instead.

Take care,
Jennie Hoffnagle

SUVs, Leather etc

2003-03-18 Thread Lucy Yogi
For seats, if you can, I would recommend leather in a heartbeat -
especially if you have to occasionally transport humans too. It cleans up
so quickly and easily; fur never sticks to it and mud, drool etc wipe off
easily. I had fabric in my two previous trucks and wouldn't go back to
that - there was always a ton of fur on them (of course) and mud etc was
much harder to get out.

I like the looks of the Highlander (being a Toyota type of person)
especially the large cargo area, but because it is only available with two
or three option packages it priced out higher than the 4Runner. This was
about a year and a half ago now, it may be different now, or different in
the US.

I'm on my third 4Runner right now, and I really like them. The only
drawback that I would mention is that the rear latch tends to get stuck
after a while and need professional intervention. (It is a manual latch
though.) This has happened on all three of my vehicles. Oh, and they
don't have butt warmers ;)

2003-03-18 Thread Lisa D Allen
I am pleased with the recent performance of my Ford Windstar as it has
gotten me safely back and forth to Angell Memorial Animal Hospital and,
during the storm when 100 cars were piled up on 95 in the Attleboro, MA
area, it got me through blinding snow, around the pile-up via a detour, and
home safely. Why was I on the road, you ask? It was not my intention to be
caught in the storm. When I left to purchase Moses' medicine, it was not
snowing. I don't like the fact that everything is automatic these days; when
I requested manual controls for doors, windows, whatever, the salesman
looked at me like I was Fred Flintstone asking for a new club.
My favorite vehicle of all time, but I shall not buy another, is the
Suburban. I don't like the modern ones at all. I want them to bring back
the big, boxy ones with the double rear doors that practically screamed,
Bring me your dogs, horses, building materials, etc! The current ones
scream, Fetch me your soccer team and park me only in the tonier
neighborhoods!
My vehicle carries what is most precious to me, my dogs. Therefore, every
three months I take it in for a check up, work, whatever, whether it needs
it or not.
I lease so that means they force me to get a new vehicle every three
years. I lease because of this and because I am protected by the automobile
company as well as the local emergency services company, just in case.
I have trained my salesman, a long-timer, to respond to my needs. He knows
that he can not put one over on me and that, if a vehicle is delivered which
does not meet my specifications (for the dogs, of course), I shall refuse
delivery. To his credit, he personally went shopping for special mats for
me for the dogs to use under the crates in the van.
I buy my vehicles in the neighboring state at a dealership whose emphasis
has always been on, mainly, personal satisfaction and excellent service.
Since these are my priorities re: my driving experience, it suits me well.

My questions is this, his ear flaps seem to be very sensetive, he can't

Has he been checked for ear infections or parasites like mites?

dog food / dog treats

2003-03-18 Thread Terry Cathy Bering
Dear Members,
What dog food/dog treats do Berner List readers use? At a recent dog
show in Chicago there were numerous booths set up advertising allergy
free and other natural foods/treats. Unfortunately, what you see of the
small manufacturers of dog food/treats at the AKC events are not
available in the regular food stores or large pet stores like Petsmart
or Petco. We are trying Wellness and Innova brands that we found in a
smaller store far from us.
We found Old Mother Hubbard treats there also but we were disappointed
with the lack of healthy variety brands at this small pet boutique.
Unfortunately, our 7 month old pup tried raw hides and of course loves
them. With her recent bout of diarrhea we have restricted her diet. Is
it ever OK to give rawhides that contain no chemicals or preservatives
to dogs if you supervise them closely? I know once the raw hide gets
chewed and becomes gooey it becomes extremely dangerous to the dogs and
cause choking as they try to swallow it. Any comments on the Berner-L
list are appreciated. Terry
