RE: 2005 National Specialty
Posted for my breeder Tari Hafner 2005 Specialty Chair Let me start out by stating that there are no plans to hold the 2005 national specialty in Lancaster, PA. This rumor was started by someone who is in no way involved with the planning of the specialty and has no first hand knowledge. Rumors are hurtful and damaging at best. Yes, I have been very hurt by these rumors, more than I can even explain here. I just want to correct this statement, then I will be happy to let things rest. I do know how difficult a job the Specialty Chair has, which is why I called Tari last week to ask if there was anything I could do to help. In the course of that conversation she inadvertently let it slip that the site would be in Lancaster. I did my best to let her know the issues and the potential problems with using a site in that region. After a number of other phone calls, I verified that a contract had been negotiated with a hotel in Lancaster, and all it needed was Board approval. If I had felt that I was the only one who would have chosen not to attend a Specialty held in Lancaster, it would have gone no further. But if enough other members were similarly minded, then I feared that the club would once more have a large financial penalty for not having enough rooms at the host hotel booked for the show. The time to find that out was prior to signing the contract - not after. I am very aware of the extra work that I helped cause the Show Committee, and I do apologize for that. It's also evident that we have an enormous task still ahead of us in the way of education and raising the awareness of the general club membership about the issues of commercial breeding and puppy mills. I don't know if there are any plans for the contract with the Lancaster hotel, but it strikes me that it would be invaluable to use it to make Lancaster County officials more aware of the concerns that people have over protection of puppy mills in their county. If we can find a way to make good use of this episode, I think it would be of tremendous benefit! I don't think that there is any need to discuss this topic further on this List, other than to offer help and assistance to the committee doing all of the work. The 2004 Specialty Committee still has a great deal of work ahead, and the work of the 2005 Specialty Committee is already underway. The 2006 Specialty Committee is probably already looking into site selection. So you can easily see where efforts from us all will help make the Specialties run more smoothly for everyone! Many thanks to all who are working so diligently to create a great Specialty. Having been part of planning committes for some professional conferences, I know first hand all the work that is involved. I also know that without the feedback from our membership and attendees who are not members, that continually improving the conferences would not be possible. That feedback comes in many forms and all of it should be evaluated objectively. Most people don't even know who the conference planners are, let alone all the work involved. That said, I was one of the people who stated I would not support a Lancaster based Specialty. I, like so many others, do contribute to the efforts against puppymills, financially and through education. Together these are forceful tools, if only we could get them to work faster, but that is my personal lament. I meant no personal slight or attack by my message, but simply a statement of MY personal position and BTW, I wouldn't support an event held in Missouri either. Thank you for listening and thank you again for all of your hard work. I am sure the event will be wonderful and I look forward to attending and helping out. 2005 Specialty
Hi, Is the 2005 Specialty actually scheduled to be held in Lancaster County or is this hypothetical? Surely revenue from activities at the show would be subject to taxation in the vendors' home state? Rose
RE: 2005 Specialty
Is the 2005 Specialty actually scheduled to be held in Lancaster County or is this hypothetical? Rose, In answer to your question, the Specialty Committee has changed the site of the Specialty from Lancaster. We'll all be looking forward to learning where it will be held! 2005 National Specialty
Posted for my breeder Tari Hafner 2005 Specialty Chair I have been very hesitant to write but figured I had better do so before things got any worse. There is always a desire to keep a specialty location secret from the general membership until the year before a specialty but it is getting us into trouble this year. Let me start out by stating that there are no plans to hold the 2005 national specialty in Lancaster, PA. This rumor was started by someone who is in no way involved with the planning of the specialty and has no first hand knowledge. Rumors are hurtful and damaging at best. Yes, I have been very hurt by these rumors, more than I can even explain here. I will not speak for the others on our committees. We have worked very hard over the last year and believe that we have a really wonderful location for the specialty but that is all I will divulge until after 2004. You will all just have to wait and see. We had problems with another club not giving us releases (you would not believe how difficult that is) but as our good fortune would have it, another breed moved their specialty to the fall of that year freeing up the time and location we really wanted all along. This location is experienced in hosting dog specialties and actually hopes to attract more in the future. I can guarantee that you will all have a truly great time if you come and I expect that many of you will indeed come. As far as the rumors being damaging, we are moving forward with what we believe will be a long remembered specialty - perhaps on many levels. We did visit a location in Lancaster which we all felt was a wonderful location for a specialty. The convention center/resort was a lovely place and they offered us a really good package deal. They came highly recommended by one of the local dog show superintendents. They have hosted numerous specialties for several breeds. One breed has signed up to hold theirs there every year until 2008. They have been hosting 3-4 specialties each year since they started doing them a few years ago. Imagine the positive impact these other breeds can have on this area. They have the ability to show people what well bred dogs are and to promote their breeds in a responsible manner. Education is the key and I am glad that other breed clubs see the golden opportunity to educate in this area. Education works, boycotts do not. I expect that those who have been so vocal about not coming to Lancaster if the specialty were held there will be hard at work trying to change the legislation to protect dogs. I expect that they will be working in many areas where this is a concern, not just Lancaster. I would enjoy having all of you present your efforts and results at the specialty in 2005 so that we can all share in what will hopefully be your successes and not failures. If all that energy is turned into a positive work force, it could be unstoppable. For those of you who have supported us regardless of where we held a specialty, I applaud you. You are the ones who make this job worth doing. It is a very difficult job and I don't think anyone appreciates all the work that goes into making a specialty happen until they have been there. But, it is you, the ones who come to a specialty to enjoy the beautiful dogs and showcase the best the breed has to offer, that I tip my hat. You are the ones who will impact Bernese in the most positive way. You are the ones who who make all the hard work worthwhile. You are the ones who make us forge ahead to produce the best specialty we can. I am indeed thankful that most of you are supportive of all our hard efforts. So, let's stop all the talk about the specialty being in Lancaster and move our energy on to better topics. Tari Hafner 2005 National Specialty Chair

2005 Specialty
I'm excited, having heard from a couple of sources that the 2005 Specialty might be within striking distance of my home. I'd love to participate at least in the agility trial but here's the rub. I don't go very far for trials because of time and cost. But it would be much more attractive if the agility trial were open to other breeds. Many specialties do this and turn the agility trial into a money maker instead of a monetary loss. They will often have one day just for the breed and then one or two days open for all breeds. Or they might open all the days to all breeds but have special awards for the featured breed. Is there anyone else out there who would find this to be attractive? Who should be contacted with this suggestion? Claudia Brydon in NW PA Barney OA OAJ AD (Aussie) Boomer NAP (Bernese Mountain Dog) Mo NA NAJ (Gordon Setter Granddog)
Re: [berneragility] 2005 Specialty
Personally, I think one agility day just for Berners and then perhaps two open days is a great idea. The facility is already rented, at least one judge is already there, and yes, agility trials are great money makers. The site would have to be either in a large populated area or one that had several motels though, to hold all the Berner people there for the specialty as well as outside agility folks. Perhaps it could help offset the cost of offering a full tracking test (TD/TDX/VST) and a second day of obedience. Even though I had to pull from obedience in WV because my dog became ill, I thought two obedience days was great. Our agility trial this past winter gave the club a phenominal profit !!! With the preferred classes being out east, I'm sure the Berner agility entries will increase. My biggest concern would be that some performance people do not like to do more than one venue a day - for example, many don't like to do agility and obedience on the same day. I am OK with it, but I think we would have to find out how the majority of those that do both feel about it. Probably the agility and obedience should not be offered on the same day(s). The same especially holds true of tracking, which in my experience is more draining on a dog than obedience or agility.I can't speak for carting. What do others that do both agility and obedience think? Does the BMDCA need the $$ that an open agility trial would bring in? Is it worth the extra work? Re: [berneragility] 2005 Specialty
I'm sure the club would really appreciate the dollars a multi-day agility trial would pull in. IMHO, it doesn't seem practical for a specialty event, though. Agility trials are very labor intensive, as I'm sure you know! There's so many other things going on at a specialty that most people want to attend. I don't think you'd get many volunteers. You would have to look outside the club for workers. Don't forget it would be during the week, too. I do like the idea of opening the trial to other breeds, after all Berners are accepted. It could still be a 1 day trial, but it would be a longer day. I think it would pay for itself and maybe even make some money. SHOPPING AT THE 2003 SPECIALTY May 29, 2003 - Part 12 My daughter, Gwen, is a potter, so I really appreciate Debi Manduca's beautiful pottery. *** MudiPaws Pottery Jim Manduca Artist: Debi Manduca 2604 Starling Dr Paso Robles, CA 93446 Phone: (805) 239-2170 Fax:(805) 239-1480 E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web Site: www.mudipaws.com Debi Manduca, the artist, has been handcrafting pottery for about five years. They started their business in March 2000. Debi sculpts each dog and throws each Treat Jar and Candy Dish. She fires them together so the Berner actually becomes part of (fuses to) the lid. They are basically stoneware and are very durable. They glaze them to the customer's order or to Debi's imagination. They craft special jars with Berners pulling carts with puppies or milk cans in the carts. They do hiking Berners with Alpine climbing gear and hats. They can sculpt two or three Berners on each lid ($30 extra per dog) if the customer desires. They make Treat Jars ($69 to $85) and Candy Dishes ($45) - the Treat Jar is larger (11 or 12 inches tall) and the Candy Dish is shorter (about 6 inches tall.) Small Figures/Ornaments are $30 and up. They craft Business Card Holders ($45) and Figurines ($40 and up) in several sizes. They do all breeds and if you send them pictures of your own Berner or other dog, Debi can sculpt your dogs. They can also sculpt two or three different breeds on the lid. For Trophy Treat Jars, call for pricing. Their web site has pricing and their event schedule. They are planning to attend the 2004 National Specialty in TX. They have two Berners!!! Alphie is six years young and from the Bern region of Switzerland and Moxie is six months old and keeps them pretty busy. You gotta love those Berners!!! MudiPaws Potters will be donating a Treat Jar with two Berners on the lid for the 2004 Berner-Garde Fundraiser. Happy Shopping!! Joye Neff and Nick ( Ben) Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburgh, PA
SHOPPING AT THE 2003 SPECIALTY - Park 13 and ***Trip to China.....
SHOPPING AT THE 2003 SPECIALTY May 29, 2003 - Part 13 The Paintlady is our Lucky 13th Vendor to be featured on the Berner-l!! ** Wing-It Designs (The Paint Lady) Katherine Warren 34470 Agness-Illahee Road Agness, OR 97406 Phone: (541) 247-0456 (The above are her new address and phone number after June 1, 2003) E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web Site: www.wingitdesigns.com Basically Katherine's business consists of is an internet shop with a secure site. You can e-mail Katherine your Berner's picture; choose a garment or send you own garment, pay for the order and shipping with notations as to when you need your order and voila - you have an original beautiful Paint Lady garment. Katherine attends a limited number of nationals and some all breed shows, where you can come by, try on garments or bring her your own garment, supply her with a picture(s) of your dog(s), and if you don't have a photo with you, she can take some with her digital camera for a small $5.00 fee. She tries to paint as many items as possible at the show so you can take the completed order home with you. What she can't finish at the shows, she takes home to finish and the item will be sent out when it is completed. She can get pretty backed up with orders, especially in the fall and before Christmas, so think ahead and get your orders in early. Katherine carries high end denim garments and tries to keep sizes for the larger man or woman. Basically her stock consists of various barn jackets and field coats, a few dusters, ladies vests (some waist length, others hip length,) a very heavy denim shirt for men or women, men's ties, ladies denim purses, some denim jackets with removable polar fleece liners that can actually be worn as a separate vest, and some really neat ladie's anoraks (while they last.) The price of the garment includes one head study and extra heads range from $65 on the front, or $85 on the back of the garment. Smaller heads on the front are approx. $45 to $65. Artwork on your garment is $95 per head, front or back. She will also paint on a frameable fabric, suitable for matting. Katherine's garments are primarily USA or Canadian made and of the best quality. The fabric paint she uses is the best available on the market. The finished garment is completely washable or dry cleanable after a simple heat setting procedure that you can do at home. Katherine has been in business since 1986 and is semi retired, so she won't be attending as many nationals and all breeds shows. This is a good reason to use the internet for your purchases. If you aren't sure of your size, you can send her your vital measurements and she'll match you up with the correct jacket. All orders are payable in advance, and she does accept personal checks and major credit cards. For obvious reasons, all sales are final. She stays pretty busy - and will try to meet your deadline. You are just going to LOVE her hand painted clothes. Happy Shopping!! Joye Neff and Nick ( Ben) Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburgh, PA ** *** P.S. There is going to be a slight interruption in the SHOPPING AT THE 2003 SPECIALTY reports, because my son and I are going to go to China early tomorrow morning to get he and his wife's baby daughter, Gracie. This is the third time that the trip has been scheduled and it's been cancelled twice. I figure that the third time is a charm, so by tomorrow at this time, we will be on a United flight beginning our 23 hour journey to Shanghai, China. We'll get off the plane on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. and board a chartered bus for a 4 hour drive to Nanjing, the city where the orphanage is located. Gracie will be almost 11 months old and we will get her the next morning. We will return to Pittsburgh, PA in the evening of June 11th, after a 26 hour journey, and I will resume the Shopping series shortly after returning home. Have an enjoyable two weeks while I'm away!!!

Canadian National Specialty 2003 - Sieger Show Entries
Hello Everyone, Just a reminder that the deadline for Sieger Show entries is only 1 month away, entries close on 1st May 2003. For information about the Sieger Show and entry forms see: http://members.rogers.com/bmdspecialty2003/sieger_show.htm I would also like to clarify that dogs under 6 months of age are not eligible for entry in the Sieger due to a CKC regulation which states: No dog under the age of 6 months shall be allowed within the show precincts. Only dogs entered in one of the regular, non-regular or unofficial classes shall be allowed within the show precinct. The lower age limit for the Jungstenklasse(Youngest)Class was not mentioned in the planning book or on the website, so some people may not have been aware that there was an age restriction on entries. Although this show is outdoors, access to the show site will be controlled by the All-Breed Club. If you wish to bring a dog that is not going to be entered in any of the show events onto the show site, they will need to be entered in the Specialty Show as for-exhibition-only. Exhibition-only allows dogs that are not entered in any of the regular classes to officially attend the show. These dogs are assigned a number and listed in the catalogue like all the other dogs in the show. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. ~~~ Robin Camken BMD Specialty 2003 Chair Ottawa, Ontario Canada __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Specialty Shopping Tip
I must share with my berner-l friends a shopping tip -- don't leave the Specialty without your own pair of the lucky green socks!!! At the Spokane Specialty I was browsing before obedience and came upon a booth with some great berner socks. I bought the green ones, put them right on, did obedience and walked away with High in Trial!!! It had to be the socks!! I was a believer and made sure and bought an extra pair. Since then my dogs have been accumulating titles left and right -- I attribute this to the lucky green socks. But there is more! Last month I wanted to get something for Valerie Horney as a thank you for letting me stay with her during the Denver shows so I bought her a pair of the lucky green socks. Since she was showing, I put them in her tack box. Valerie got Winner's Bitch, finishing the girl, and then took Best of Breed from the veterans class with Ready!!! Apparently you do not even have to be wearing the lucky green socks to have them work for you! Still a skeptic??? This weekend a boy from my A litter was showing in Arizona. His owner, newly in possession of her own pair the lucky green socks, made certain to wear them. In addition, the dog was being shown by the woman who sells the lucky green socks -- Nancy Stewart. With that much involvement from the lucky green socks, how could the dog lose??? He didn't -- Best of Breed both days for his third and fourth majors!! I plan to get a ten years supply but just in case there are any left, you might want to get your own lucky green socks at the Specialty ;) Mary-Ann Bowman Emma, Abra, Maize and Halo Utah
Specialty room plea
Hi everyone, This is a plea from someone who is definitely going to the Specialty, to those who have decided not to go to the specialty but still have a room reservation. My plea is that you simply cancel your room reservation so that those of us who are desperate to get a room and are patiently waiting on the waiting list, get that room you're hanging on to. Even though rooms are not supposed to be transfered from one person to another, I know it's going to happen, however it's not very fair to those of us who were not fortunate to get one of those rooms. I don't want this email to spark flames, I am just hoping that it will initiate those who have decided not to attend, and do have a reservation, to give that reservation back to the hotel so some of us can have the opportunity of getting a room at the Specialty Hotel. Thank-you, Kim Morrow Susa Reg'd Saskatoon, SK http://www.bernesedogs.com

National Specialty
Hi everyone I'm soo disappointed. I was sooo excited about the national specialty being so close and really looking forward to going. Well I got my clinical rotation schedule for school and My rotations will be lecture on Friday, clinic on Saturday and Sunday during the month of the specialty :-(. Specialty draft judge
Please be advised that we have had a change in judges for the Tuesday draft test at this year's Specialty. Val Horney was originally scheduled to judge. However, Val was recently appointed to the BMDCA Board and will be attending the Board meeting on Tuesday. Eden Jonas has graciously accepted our invitation to replace her as Tuesday's judge. Therefore, the judges for that test will be Paul Emerson and Eden Jonas. Please contact me if you have any questions. Karyn Beyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003 Specialty Draft Chair

Flying to Specialty in California
I just wanted to let those know who are flying to the Specialty with their dogs, that they might want to confirm the cost of the flight for their dog. I checked with 6 different American airlines and all of them except for American Airlines charge just as if the dog is cargo and not extra baggage. This meant to fly my 100lb dog it will cost me over $200 US one way. With AA the extra baggage charge was still over $100 one way. I am flying Northwest from Saskatoon and the cost is $299 US to fly my dog one way and my return ticket for myself was $357US. Apparently the airlines are trying to discourage people from flying with their dogs due to liability issues. Anyhow, I just thought I'd give people a heads up in case they hadn't confirmed the cost to fly with their dogs to the Specialty. Kim Morrow Susa Reg'd Saskatoon, SK http://www.bernesedogs.com
Transportation at National Specialty in Long Beach
I've decided to forego driving 20 hours each way and fly to the National Specialty in Long Beach -- estimated gas and motel costs exceed an airline ticket price, without even considering 4 days driving time! I've just booked a flight into the Orange County Airport (SNA) that arrives at 3:48 p.m. on Monday, April 21. If anyone else is flying into that airport at around that same time, I'd like to share a shuttle ride to the host hotel. It's $34 for the first person, but only $9 for each additional person. I'm leaving the same airport on Monday the 28th at 2:20 p.m., and would love to share a shuttle anytime earlier. Can't wait!! At 05:29 PM 24/12/2002 -0600, you wrote: My first Specialty! The specialty being on the west coast and not more than a 7 hour drive away from us, this is perfect, WRONG! I have made contact with the hotel and RV parks and even the names of the people to contact on the Specialty internet site and hear the same words, ALL FULL. Waited too long to call. How dumb I feel. Pat, Don't feel dumb. I sent my reservation form in to reserve a room for two people at the Host Hotel. I sent it Expresspost which has a guaranteed delivery time (and is trackable) so that my application would reach the hotel by the first day that they were accepting bookings for the hotel. (can't remember the exact date, mid-june beginning of july?) In August, I received a letter to say that the the hotel was sold out, but they were establishing a waiting list. Fine, I thought, there are alway people dropping out when it comes to stumping up the deposit. I've just been doing a little tidying up and filing on my day off today and just found the letter. I re-read it. The third paragraph down tells me if I want to be put on the waiting list to telephone or e-mail and I'll be put on the waiting list in the order that the request is received. When I read the letter back in August, I stopped reading at the bit which said as we already have your reservation request. Now who feels dumb! (if you're reading this - Sorry Chantal! I'm a dozy so-and-so!) Wendy Boris Beard Ottawa, Canada http://members.rogers.com/bernerboris/bernerbooks.html

Don't panic...g Specialty rooms are always sold out when the reservation book opens, but it's so far ahead...many people's plans change so many/most of the people on the official waiting list end up in the host hotel. Contact the host hotel or the Specialty Hotel Coordinator (not sure who it is, I'm sure you'll find a contact on the specialty website) and book one of the back up hotels (if available) AND see if you can wait list yourself for the host hotel. 2003 Specialty
My first Specialty! I suppose a hotel at a distance could be found, of course that is inconvenient having dogs with you. Any ideas? If anyone has to cancel their reservation I would be interested in hearing from you. Happy Holidays everyone Pat Bishop Berners Elmo, Vanna Rusty (Golden) California
National Specialty Video
I think I remember several people asking about the BMDCA National Specialty Videos... They're ready! ... and available in a variety of configurations (Premium, Economy, Dogs, Bitches, BOB, Packages) and in VHS, P.A.L. and SECAM formats. Tape of previous specialties are also available. K9TV is on the Bulletin Board at www.onofrio.com or you can call them at 303-972-6433. ~ Sherri Venditti

Re: BMDCC Specialty Results from my catalog???
Here are the results from my catalog if you want to use them...only missing a few. Tentative? One Major correction, if I may. 12-18 dogs Sascha's Ursa Major placed second, not third. Vicky Whitney and her Major with his Major male issues deserves a lot of credit. I just hope Vicky can handle him the way he deserves. Janice Parky, President Ursa Major Fan Club

I've sent a message to the bernese list letting people know where the information is/will be posted. I've asked for a soft copy of the marked catalogue to be sent to me from the Show Secretary, but nothing received yet. I didn't have a catalogue from the show so I don't have a record of the winners myself. thanks again for the photos and congratulation on your wins.
