Hi Patricia,
When this happens, see if you can bring up a list of running applications.
It's possible that something is open that is partially obscuring the other
windows,
causing Jaws not to have complete focus.
Have you tried unloading, and then re-loading Jaws?

I seem to have a odd thing happening when I visit some web sites, and
after

I leave them, Jaws 10 still talks, but I can't seem to do anything.

If I'm in OE for instance, after leaving a web page, Jaws might tell me a
few items in my inbox but won't let me open them.

If I go to the desktop and press something to go to another application,
Jaws will just say that letter, but not the name of the program.

To fix all this, I have to reboot.

Is this some quirk or a setting in IE, or just me?

[Blind-Computing] Help with HP Printer

I know I addressed this issue before, and was told how to do something to

Does anyone maybe have them and could tell me what the steps are again?

My OS is xp pro and using Jaws 10. The printer is an HP inkjet 950C.

Are you certain that you are talking about the computer name and not the
user name? I do not believe the computer name will show up anywhere in
the

menus. Type Network into the Start menu search box to get a list of
computers and devices on your network.

To change your network name or workgroup name, press the Windows key + the
Break key (the last key on the right end of the function keys), to bring
up

the System Control Panel. Hit Tab until you get to a button labeled
Change, and press Space. Press Tab to the Change Name or something
similar button. In this dialog and press Space. It will now allow you to
change the computer name and workgroup name. As you press the Ok button,
it

will ask you to restart.

Hi,

I have a question.

I recently purchased a new laptop with windows seven
professional and I made a mistake which I don't know how to undo/change.

There was an area where I typed the name of the computer which I typed my
name but made a typo. Is there a way I can fix this?

My name shows correctly on the start menu, and the welcome screen but not
in
the user folder in the local drive.

[Blind-Computing] AVG 9

2009-12-15 Thread Patricia Dunbar
I think finally that pest pop up called web browser in AVG 9 has finally
gone.

I am almost afraid to mention it, for fear it will return, lol.

I'm not sure if it was the 8 window's updates that did the trick, or
enabling some of the IE/6 add-on in tools/options, or maybe it might have
been that I added certain web sites and one application, Open Book to
exclude in it's scanning/tracking that caused this to stop popping up.

But for a whole week now, I've not been bothered with it.

I do have a few items in the AVG components list disabled, but don't really
think that had much to do with this, as before, when they were disabled, the
dern pop up still reared it's ugly head.

I know it had nothing to do with Jaws 11 since I have only jaws 10 on my
computer.

Hmmm, that makes me to wonder if AVG had some kind of glitch and maybe
through it's updates, it worked it away.

Did you put any web sites by any chance in the exclusion lists?

I had to put All in Play in mine, that web browser popped up in that program
like crazy..

It also for some reason thought Open Book was a problem, it would try to
block me from using the program.

It wasn't a firewall issue on either of these, that popped up a screen which
I allowed it to go through and made it a permanent rule.

One of the add on's in IE I had enabled was, Microsoft's Research function,
so who knows exactly if any or all of these did the trick, smiles.

I am pretty sure it was an AVG issue. AVG and Windows (XP Pro) are the
only

things running on my system that I allow to do automatic updates.

I changed nothing in AVG or MS IE (v 7) I came close to uninstalling AVG
completely and doing a fresh install from the CD or a new download but it
fixed itself in time to keep me from doing that.

Lets hope it stays fixed. Good luck to you as well.

Re: [Blind-Computing] downloading question

2009-12-03 Thread Patricia Dunbar
First thing you have to sign up with your local NLS I think so you can get
onto the site to download the digital books.

Your gismo I've not heard of, but must work like the Victor? Just plug the
cable into a USB port on your computer and then to the device or a flash
card, and then you go to the site find the book/magazine ya want, and if
you've ever downloaded anything, it works the same way, only you have to
choose the drive this player is listed once you know so it goes to it
instead to your computer.
So you might check in my computer once it's plugged in and see what drive it
is. Like for the external hard drive I have, it's drive J.
So when the download thingy pops up asking you where to save your book to,
you either arrow to that drive or if your lucky it might be there by
default, but it's best to make sure so you know where it went to so ya can
find it, smiles.

Good Luck,

[Blind-Computing] AVG 9

2009-12-02 Thread Patricia Dunbar
I wanted to share this bit of info regarding that web browser window that
pops up randomally while I'm working, and it forces me to press the escape
key and then I have to alt tab back to my window.

I have tried to uncheck everything I felt I could within AVG 9 that could
pertain to this in hopes it would stop, but it just continued..

So I enabled the pop up in internet explorer and even though this thing
still pops up on me, now with that enabled, I can press the escape key only
and I'm back where I was before it appeared.

Hope this might be helpful to anyone else using AVG 9.

I just received my Coby MP200 MP3 player from JR, and it is truly simple
and totally blind accessible. On top of the unit is the earphone jack
into which you plug the included earbuds. The front panel has 5 discrete
buttons arranged in a vertical column. From top to bottom, the buttons
are skip forward, play/pause/power, skip backward, volume up and volume
down. Pressing and holding the second button from the top for 5 seconds
turns the unit on, and pressing and holding it again for 5 seconds turns
it off. That's all there is to it. The bottom of the unit has a USB
connector that plugs directly into a USB port, although a separate USB
cable is also included. You just plug it into your PC and copy and paste
the MP3 files you want to download. Just install the included AAA battery
and you're good to go. The sound quality is surprisingly good, at least
using a better pair of earbuds than the included ones. There is
absolutely no learning curve, and no sighted assistance is required to use
it. The included software, which I have not tried yet, is fully JAWS
accessible. With 2gb of memory, it can hold up to 1,000 songs. This is
probably the best blind accessible MP3 deal ever. It is still available
from JR for $10 with free shipping, but they probably won't last much
longer at that price. They make wonderful stocking stuffers. The hardest
part of using this gizmo is getting it out of the plastic blister pack
which requires a heavy duty scissors to cut open.

I've had it pop up on mine as well from time to time, and I have the same

Maybe this will help you if you follow these steps below...
In the browser go to tools menu, internet options, advanced tab menu.
Now arrow down until you come to script debugging and un check it
also un check show script errors. That should get you going.

Hi all,

I'm currently using Openbook 7.0, HP Photo Smart C4600, Jaws 10.0, Windows
XP Home Edition and a Dell Laptop.

Here's the problem: When I go into Openbook and scan a document, my
computer freezes up on me. I get a Microsoft error message, but I can't
remember verbatim what it says. I know it gives me the choices to either
send or don't send the error message.

I can't do anything on the computer when this happens.

I called Freedom Scientific and they thought it had something to do with
Fax Man. I don't know what that is, but they told me where to go to
turn it off, but it wasn't in the list under the service tab in
administrative tools .

Is anyone familiar with this? If so, can you tell me what to do here?

Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] Sansa E280 V2 Portable Media Player

2009-11-23 Thread Patricia Dunbar

**FYI**

Sansa E280 V2

Accessibleelectronics.com is selling an off-the-shelf MP3 player, modified
using Rockbox to make it accessible and add to its original features.

the expandable 8GB player sells for $79.99
http://www.accessibleelectronics.com/Specials.html Below is a product
description taken from the above link where the unit can be baught.

The Sansa E280 V2 is a great portable media player by itself, but when
Rockbox is installed on it, it makes it fantastic!

The menus, folders, and filenames are spoken, which makes this player as
accessible as any player out there. Using theVoiceBox utility, you can set
it up to use your choice of SAPI voices that are available on your own
computer to voice the folder and file names; however, itwill come completely
set up and speaking when you purchase it from us.

Rockbox allows the Sansa E280 V2 to use microSD and microSDHC cards
presently up to 16 GB, not just limited to themicroSD cards useable with the
Sansa firmware.

By adding a microSDHC 16 GB memory card, you can expand your player from 8
GB up to a whopping total of 24 GB atonce! (Once manufacturers have come out
with their 32 GB microSDHC card, you should be able to get a total of 40
GB!!) Of course, you can have an inexhaustablesupply of microSDHC memory
cards as well, making your storage capacity virtually unlimited!

Rockbox also adds much more functionality and allows you to play many
different file formats such as OGG Vorbis, FLAC,AAC, AIFF, and many others
aside from the usual MP3, WMA, WAV, etc. It won't however, play
DRM-protected files.

It provides much better control over the options for the player and is an
improvement over the original Sansa firmware. You getexcellent book marking
capabilities, keeping track of up to 10 files at one time. You can also move
back to an earlier bookmark if you so desire.

You can use your player to find out the time and date in 12 hour or 24 hour
format and has a sleep timer as well!

It gives you more control over the sound of your player by using the build
in graphic equalizer, stereo width, and other soundsettings.

The player has a built-in FM stereo receiver with plenty of presets so you
can save your favorite stations and access theminstantly.

When you plug this player into your computer, it comes up just like a
regular flash drive and you can copy and paste yourfiles onto it very
easily. There's no need for any music management software and the
inaccessibility associated with them.

The above is just a sampling of the many features of Rockbox; it can do a
lot more.

The Rockbox firmware is very impressive and makes the Sansa E280 V2 very
accessible.

It makes it very easy to navigate the menus and do just about everything
that is possible on this player.

Hi All,

I have several card readers label Removable Disk E , F,
G, H in
my list when I open My Computer from the desktop. They are
listed under
Local Disk C and DVD Ram Drive D. I never use these and
would like to
disable them. In the Device Manager tree view I see 2
possibilities where
these card readers might be. Under Disk Drives or Storage
volume. Would
someone please tell me which of these to open to disable
these items? If I
am wrong would someone please tell me which heading to look
under? I am
running XP3 Home, IE7, Office Home Jaws 10 11. All help
will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Sansa E280 V2 Portable Media Player

**FYI**

Sansa E280 V2

Accessibleelectronics.com is selling an off-the-shelf MP3 player,
modified

using Rockbox to make it accessible and add to its original features.

the expandable 8GB player sells for $79.99
http://www.accessibleelectronics.com/Specials.html Below is a product
description taken from the above link where the unit can be baught.

The Sansa E280 V2 is a great portable media player by itself, but when
Rockbox is installed on it, it makes it fantastic!

The menus, folders, and filenames are spoken, which makes this player as
accessible as any player out there. Using theVoiceBox utility, you can
set

it up to use your choice of SAPI voices that are available on your own
computer to voice the folder and file names; however, itwill come
completely
set up and speaking when you purchase it from us.

Rockbox allows the Sansa E280 V2 to use microSD and microSDHC cards
presently up to 16 GB, not just limited to themicroSD cards useable with
the
Sansa firmware.

By adding a microSDHC 16 GB memory card, you can expand your player from
8

GB up to a whopping total of 24 GB atonce! (Once manufacturers have come
out
with their 32 GB microSDHC card, you should be able to get a total of 40
GB!!) Of course, you can have an inexhaustablesupply of microSDHC memory
cards as well, making your storage capacity virtually unlimited!

Rockbox also adds much more functionality and allows you to play many
different file formats such as OGG Vorbis, FLAC,AAC, AIFF, and many
others

aside from the usual MP3, WMA, WAV, etc. It won't however, play
DRM-protected files.

It provides much better control over the options for the player and is an
improvement over the original Sansa firmware. You getexcellent book
marking
capabilities, keeping track of up to 10 files at one time. You can also
move
back to an earlier bookmark if you so desire.

You can use your player to find out the time and date in 12 hour or 24
hour
format and has a sleep timer as well!

It gives you more control over the sound of your player by using the
build

in graphic equalizer, stereo width, and other soundsettings.

The player has a built-in FM stereo receiver with plenty of presets so
you

can save your favorite stations and access theminstantly.

What's included with your purchase

1 SanDisk Sansa E280 V2 8 GB portable media player with Rockbox
preinstalled-

Refurbished

1 USB/charging cable

1 pair of earphones Quick-start guide and the VoiceBox utility

Mike,

You don't use Excel?
Excel works very easy without having to set anything up in the program.
You can either tab across the row from one cell to the next, or you can
use
the right/left arrow keys. Jaws key and #8 reads the current line,
up/down

arrow moves you in that direction and Jaws says what it's landing on.
Of course there are more keys to do more things within Excel, but just
for

reading something, these keys do the job just fine.
I've never had any problems using Excel starting with Jaws 3.7 and Excel
2000, I currently use 2003 and can't tell any difference.
If your unsure as to what Excel looks like, think of it as a grid
pattern,

with horizontal and vertical lines.
You can save an Excel spreadsheet into Word, but it will turn it into
columns and tables. Which basically is like Excel except the navigation
keys
are much different.

Hi listers. What is the maximum number of messages that can be safely
saved in a user-defined Outlook Express folder? The reason I am asking
this question is that I just noticed that some of the earliest messages in
my user-defined OE folders have inexplicably disappeared. Since I never
conciously deleted them, I am assuming that they were deleted
automatically by OE or by some other process I am not aware of. I know
that the Compact All Folders option compacts all OE folders to save disk
space and make OE run more efficiently, but does it also delete the oldest
messages from each folder if it has grown too large? Or are messages
automatically deleted after they have been saved for a certain period of
time? Thanks for any explanation.

Actually the compacting process simply removes the empty space created
after

messages have been deleted. When a message is deleted the space that it
required for it is not reallocated in the DBX file and that is why
compression every now and then is needed. It is quite possible if a DBX
file

becomes too large it may start to be unstable.

[Blind-Computing] AVG 9 Web Shield

2009-11-16 Thread Patricia Dunbar

I found this info on the AVG web site and thought to share it with anyone
using AVG 9 and has encountered this annoying web pop up box and how to
disable it.

AVG Web Shield is a type of a real-time resident protection. It consists of
two features - Web protection and Instant Messaging protection.

Web protection scans the downloaded files even before these are downloaded
to your computer. This is done by scanning communication on ports TCP 80,
3128 and 8080 by default.

Instant Messaging protection verifies the files sending via instant
messaging are virus free. Currently AVG supports the ICQ, MSN and Yahoo!
protocols.

How can I change settings of Web Shield component or disable it?
You can change settings of Web Shield component following way:

a.. Please open AVG User Interface.
b.. Double-click on the Web Shield component.
1. Web protection
Following settings may be changed on the Web tab:

a.. Check archives - Does Web Shield check the archive files (e.g. ZIP)?
b.. Report Potentially Unwanted Programs and Spyware threats - Does Web
Shield detect the Potentially Unwanted Programs and Spyware infection?

c.. Use heuristic analysis - Does Web Shield use the heuristic analysis?
d.. What is the maximal size of the file that will be checked by Web
Shield?

2. Instant Messaging protection
You can select what Instant Messaging application, that are supported, will
be protected by Web Shield component:

 a.. ICQ
 b.. MSN
 c.. Yahoo
In case you want to disable Web Shield component, please proceed as follows:

 a.. Open AVG User Interface.
b.. Double-click on the Web Shield component.
c.. Un-tick the Enable Web Shield option.
d.. To confirm the settings please click on the Save changes button.

I will try these steps to see if this removes this pop-up of this Web
dialogue box, if it doesn't, then I will email tech support.

Also here is a direct link that I found rather interesting read of index
help within AVG and very easily navigated with my jaws version 10.

The reason I am asking is, when I turn on my computer and I hear the
window's sound, Jaws *10* seems to take a bit longer before speaking and
when it does, I can usually route Jaws and find out what is going on and
it's always something that says, FRSV.
So I am wondering if the above mentioned item in my advanced options has

My OS is XP Pro and IE 6.

1 open Avg interface
2 Open the menu by alt and go to tools and down arrow to advance settings

3 aroow down to schedule and open it with right arrow and arrow down to

then you tab some times until you get to the list where you can choose the

Yes that works good for even in Excel spreadsheets especially if you need to

This approach will also work in keeping multiple documents in date order
in

a folder.

If you use the format 2009 10 27 at the beginning of the file name the
documents will be in date order. Remember to make this work the month
must

be two digits; in other words February is not 2, it is 02.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] MAINTAINING THE ORDER OF MULTIPLE FILES ON A
DISK

I'm not sure how many of you will find this helpful but it took me so long
to sort it out, I decided to share my experience in hopes that I can save
someone else the grief.

here's the scenario.
You have a CD you are creating and you want to keep the files in order.
In
my case, they were chapters in a book I had written. I tried everything
but
for some odd reason, the files would be loaded in some kind of random
order.
I tried labeling them with numbers having multiple digits such as:
chapter

001.mp3
No, that didn't work and Chapter 17 ended up right after Chapter 1 and
Chapter 2 ended somewhere in the pack.
Then I remembered the way that Freedom Scientific labels their files on a
training disk. The numbers have to be first and they must be absolutely
precise.
That's the only way. here's an example of how I finally labeled those
chapters and they stayed in the correct order.

1.1 CHAPTER 1.MP3
1.2 CHAPTER 2.MP3
1.3 CHAPTER 3.MP3

Apparently, when you use the List command available from the View menu,
the
files appear in order but they don't stay that way unless the decimal
system

is used. if you have several books on the same disk, either divide them
into folders or use a progressive system.

My book has four parts so I used 1.xx for the first section, 2.xx for the
next and so on.
For some brainyacs like Rick and David, this may be second nature. But
for

someone like me who is more of a writer than a computer person, I was so
relieved when my method finally succeeded. My thanks to the people at
Freedom Scientific for giving me the idea.

it was David who introduced me to the View menu and told me how to list
files in any folder.
While in the folder but without an open file, press Alt V for the View
menu.

Then, to arrange the files in a list, press the L key and the list will be
displayed.

I also use Excel and office 2003 and I do it this way..

arrow to the column you want to enlarge

press control spacebar to select the entire column*or select spacebar for
entire row*

then press Alt O, arrow down to colomn and enter on it.

Then arrow down to auto fit and enter. Now that column is expanded.

Should you need to delete a column or row you can do it this way...

arrow to the column/row
Press Alt E, D, then arrow down to either row or column and press enter.

If you are using 2007 it may be a different matter. I do not know but you

doesn't take an install just a short cut key is all.

We need some help; both my friend and I are blind; when on the computer,
all

of a sudden we will loose speech, windows sounds and everything else that
one could hear; when we find someone that can see to look at the screen we
find that the computer has muted itself; we have two questions; is there a
way that a blind person can un/mute the computer; and secondly, what would
make the computer just decide to mute; any help in this mater will be
appreciated. Thanks,

[Blind-Computing] Externally Harddrive Format

2009-10-06 Thread Patricia Dunbar

Hello,

Can someone please tell me again how to format an external harddrive?

I did it once before, but I guess I didn't keep the steps and I think it was
through my computer and then to the drive associated to that harddrive, but
after that I tend to be foggy.

I'm using xp pro with jaws 10/plus can't recall the exact version..

Thanks for any help

1. Go to the Tools option on the menu bar by hitting Alt + T

4. Tab once to get to a list box.
5. Arrow down 7 times until you get to the Internet and network paths

6. Uncheck that box by hitting the space bar
7. tab once and hit the space bar on the ok button and you're all set.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] scanner help

I have to give a little background info in case it is needed to understand
my situation.

About a month or so ago I had Windows 2000 and I used a Epson Perfection
1670 scanner, which I still have and use. Also, I use my scanner mainly
with Kurzweil 1000 version 9.

I upgraded to Windows XP Pro because my hard drive got corrupted somehow.
My friend, who works on my computer, did a reinstall and that is when I
upgraded to Win XP Pro. My scanner worked fine and I could still use
Kurzweil. Though, when my friend did a reinstall he did not put the Epson
Smart Panel in or anything else that was on the original disk. The only
thing of Epson I had was in the Start menu which was, Epson Scan.

The other day my boyfriend wanted me to scan a picture for him and that
is
when we noticed that the picture wasn't coming up like it use to. I
called
my friend and that is when he told me it was probably because he forgot
to

install the Epson Smart Panel.

So, thinking everything was fine today, I was going to scan some things
in
Kurzweil and the scanner would not move. The light was on near the
buttons

and the light on the scanner bar was on but the bar would not move. This
could have been do to my boyfriend hitting some of the buttons on the
front of the scanner. Again, I'll mention that after the install of XP
the

scanner worked fine and I could scan materials in Kurzweil.

Well, I found my CD of Epson and installed everything. The scanner bar
moves now which I suppose is good. It was a successful install as I was
told on the screen. When I go to the Start menu now it has extra stuff of
Epson but the Epson scan option does not open any more like it did. My
biggest concern is thinking that the bar moved now I could use Kurzweil.
I

open Kurzweil and tried to scan several things that I have scanned in the
past (like a test to see if it would work) and Kurzweil does not
recognize

that there are any pages.

I'm not sure of what to do. I tried calling my friend a couple of times
but he hasn't gotten back to me.

Is there anything I could do or try? I did look in Kurzweil to make sure
the scanner was listed and it was.

Re: [Blind-Computing] scanner help

2009-08-03 Thread Patricia Dunbar
I might have the name wrong. My son who works for DARS in Utah said they use
something at his job and I thought he said that kind.
I had told him of my HP and the recent problems I was having and he told me
of something and I thought he said it was this particular kind, but if they
are no longer available then I must be mistaken.

I think there was a scanner product called either Leading Edge or Reading
Edge. It is no longer made. Matter of fact, someone recently was asking
locally if anyone knew how to get one of these repaired, or if anyone knew
of someone who wanted to get rid of one.

Hi to the original sender. Do you still have the CD to your scanner? The
Epson Smart Pannel software is really not needed, but if you need to scan
pics, you should install it. Good luck.
Also make sure the scanner's driver is installed.Lino Morales

I have to give a little background info in case it is needed to
understand

my situation.

About a month or so ago I had Windows 2000 and I used a Epson
Perfection

1670 scanner, which I still have and use. Also, I use my scanner mainly
with Kurzweil 1000 version 9.

I upgraded to Windows XP Pro because my hard drive got corrupted
somehow.

My friend, who works on my computer, did a reinstall and that is when I
upgraded to Win XP Pro. My scanner worked fine and I could still use
Kurzweil. Though, when my friend did a reinstall he did not put the
Epson

When I go to the Start menu now it has extra stuff
of

Epson but the Epson scan option does not open any more like it did. My
biggest concern is thinking that the bar moved now I could use Kurzweil.
I
open Kurzweil and tried to scan several things that I have scanned in
the

past (like a test to see if it would work) and Kurzweil does not
recognize
that there are any pages.

I'm not sure of what to do. I tried calling my friend a couple of times
but he hasn't gotten back to me.

Is there anything I could do or try? I did look in Kurzweil to make sure
the scanner was listed and it was.

Thank you,
Melissa

I realized after asking this question, that the account is my email address.

Re: [Blind-Computing] can't log in to my verizon account usingoutlookexpress

2009-06-16 Thread Patricia Dunbar

Maybe Verizon changed their POP3/SMPT settings for more security.
ATT did that for it's users who at the time when it still was SBC.
They did however send us an email with the changes and how to set them up
within OE.
Sometimes still I'll get the pop up screen asking me for my user name and
password and I think it's a security thing they do ever so often...

Hi, John

I did try calling verizon but some of the techies there are hard to
understand because they have foreign accents. One time I had a problem
and I had to tell this one tech guy nearly 15 times that I am blind
and use speech. Half of the time I don't think they know what they're

Hi, everyone

I'm having problems bigtime with outlook express. Lately it keeps

Any help with this problem would be very much appreciated.

2009-06-16 Thread Patricia Dunbar

You might try this...

1. Press Alt T, A
2. if your email is the only one listed, tab to the properties button and
enter
3. if you have more than one email address listed, then up/down arrow to the
one that is your primary one and tab to properties and enter

4. control-tab to the server page
5. tab down to settings...and enter
6. you have 2 choices here which I have copied and pasted it to show you
what they say..

I have mine on #1.

Outgoing Mail Server
Logon Information
*Use same settings as my incoming mail server
Log on using
Account name:
Password:
Remember password
Log on using Secure Password Authentication
OK Cancel
7. once you made your choice tab to the ok button and spacebar it
8. tab again to the ok button and spacebar it
9. your back on the properties first page tab to a close button and enter

you might have to close OE and reboot to see if these changes help in this
situation.

Interesting, I've been having a similar problem with Outlook and my
Verizon

e-mail. No matter what I do, it frequently asks me for my username and
password. And even when I enter that info in and tell it to check the box
to remember password, it comes back. Sometimes I am not able to navigate
the dialog box to enter in what it needs.

I have found that if I exit Outlook, and then launch it again, the problem
goes away. Other times I have to shut down the computer and reboot.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

The problem lies somewhere between the scanner and the videeo display on

I suggest comparing the optional settings in the scanner-related software

Re: [Blind-Computing] Service Pack 3 question

Hello,

I know I installed this back last summer for my computer and my husband's,
because I had on my system Office 2000 and there was some problems with this
SP3.

My husband had Office 2003 so he was ok.
I have now installed Office 2003 on my computer and my question is, SP3
doesn't show up in the control panel on either of our computers.

So was wondering where it went?

We both use XP Pro and Office Professional. I did notice in the control
panel Jaws to read to me that SP2 is listed and Office 2003 is there.

Did SP3 just somehow get bundled with Office 2003?

Thanks for any info on this matter..

Dear Chris

Yes - I am having the same issues of having to access the interface now
with

the Jaws cursor.
AVG has certainly plummeted downhill from an accessibility standpoint
since

the version 7 I purchased. I attempted to turn off the span filter the
other day and there was no way I could do this even after about 30 minutes
of routing the jaws cursor around the interface. I will probably jettison
AVG when my licence expires. I moved from Nod 32 to AVG because at the
time

there was no inbuilt Internet Security. I understand ESET have resolved
this now so I may go back to this solution assuming that ESET have not
crippled their accessibility also.

Hello all,
Are any of you finding broken accessibility in the following areas with
the latest AVG 8.5? These did not happen with previous builds, nor did
it

with 8.0.
1. The security status can now only be read with the screen reader's
virtual mouse. Previously you could read it using the JAWS PC cursor or
whatever your screen reader uses to track the system focus.
2. In the virus vault, after clicking the empty vault button, the yes
button isn't in the tab order. Instead, you need to click it using your
virtual mouse after finding the yes button. Previously one could tab to
and activate the yes button using standard convensions.
Any comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Upon speaking to my son in Utah yesterday for Mother's day, I mentioned I

He said we both needed to be online and he could access my computer and I
would hear his jaws talking and he would hear mine and thus be able to
troubleshoot problems on either end..
I can certainly see how this would be most beneficial for trainers/technical

As far as jaws goes, you need JAWS 10. The machine you are working on
also needs jaws 10.
You would be using jaws tandum.
I've never used it personally, nor know about any 3rd party applications

I have done some restore from the window system backup mainly for my

I also have Karen's replicator which use for my Word and Excel files. I

Anyway, I am curious what you or anyone else on the list thinks of using

I use Karen's Replicator to backup my personal files each night. It is
free and is located on the Programs page. Each night I copy my JAWS
scripts directories to my Documents folder, copy a folder of downloads and
archives, my Documents folder, and my mail directories to another computer
in our house. Of course, you could also backup to an external hard drive
or an on-line storage service. On-line storage services are a great idea
for dependable storage that is off site in case off a fire or a natural
disaster. It might be a good idea to keep of your valuable data for
safety, even if you make a local copy. This storage is normally encrypted
automatically. Many services are free for a limited amount of storage and
a monthly fee for more or unlimited storage.

Making a complete image copy of the entire hard disk can make recovering
from a hard disk disaster much easier. You should make an image of a
baseline system. This ideally would be at a time when your computer has
all of your desired programs installed and the system is stable. With a
program like Image for Windows, recovery can take less than an hour. That
includes all programs and settings back exactly as they were at the time
the baseline was taken! Then you can restore any new personal data from
your nightly data backups performed with Karen's Replicator. You should
only need to make a full image backup when their have been significant
changes made to the system. I anticipate doing this about twice a year.
If you like to experiment with new software, it would be a great idea to
make a baseline before installing the new experimental software. Then you
don't have to worry too much about destroying your configuration, since it
easily can be rolled back in less than an hour. Some software like from
GiveAwayOfTheDay or in my case my daughter's installation of Spore can not
just simply be installed again. An image restore eliminates these issues.
It also is the best way to get rid of nasty Spyware and Viruses that fight

Personally, I have been putting this off for years! There is no longer
any good reasons not to backup anymore with external drives being so
cheap. It is fairly easy to find a 1 Terabyte external hard disk for less
than $100. Normally, creating the image is easy. Traditionally, the
recovery process can be troublesome for a blind person. The recovery from
the backup image files, like an external hard disk, to your internal hard
drive requires booting from another source, like DOS from a CD. Most of
the time there is no speech available for this process. Dave has a very
good tutorial for using Image for Windows for making there image and
performing the recovery process on the website.

I purchased Image for Windows this week. It includes a copy of Image for
DOS and Image for Linux. The recent Image for Linux includes a utility to
create a Recovery CD that has SpeakUp built into its Linux kernel. The CD

To remove a favorite, highlight it, press application key, press D for
delete, enter, press Y for yes and it's gone.

It's easier to sort your favorites than to organize them.
To organize them, you should probably create different folders for
different categories, then you'd have to move the favorites into the
folders .

Sorting favorites is another option in applications.
As I always say, explore all menus to see what they're all about. As long
as you don't save any changes, you'll just see all options available to
you as a learning experience.

Every time I hit Enter to get JAWS to read an email, it always says Read
Only Edit before starting

to read. Is there a way to stop this?

Thanks,
Donnie

Re: [Blind-Computing] Script error with compile

2009-03-26 Thread Patricia Dunbar
I do the same process compiling jaws scripts as you state in your first
part, but I have the program open first then I do the jaws script compiling
and I do hear that same message and then I close it all.

I've never done the last part you state in your message.

Hi Bob,

What I did was press insert+F2 to open up script manager.

This brought up the Windows Live messenger.jss script file.

I pressed control+S to save and compile the script, and I then received a
message from Jaws that compile was complete, and then it reported the name
of the window again.

At that point, I pressed the keystroke of control+shift+D to open up the
default script file, and jaws reported that the name of the window was
default.jss, followed by the word edit.

At this point, I pressed control+S to save and compile and I was faced
with

that error.

The dinky part is that I wasn't doing anything, or making any
modifications

to the script files, save for re-compiling them.

What prompted me to do this was I received a message from a friend, and
when

I went to read the message they had sent me via Windows Live, Jaws kept
reporting that it wasn't in any open chat window, every time I pressed any
of the numbers on the number row, in combination with the alt key.

I also wasn't able to hear the typing sound I was clearly able to do
before

that, and the typing notification from Jaws that I could get before.

At this point, I assumed that the script file had gotten corrupted or
something, and I did what I've always been advised to do, that being
re-compile the scripts, as a fail safe.

Well, this time, it didn't work, and I received the error on the compiling
of the default file.

Hope this better helps you understand my predicament.

Hi Lenny,

I must have had a wrong link as this did the trick...

Thanks very much,

Patricia,

Below is the direct download for ad-aware def.zip.

http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip

I ran this with the latest definition update which was 03/10/09 the other
day. However, for some reason, the download takes too much time whereas a
few months ago, the download was quick as usual.

Based on the date of the definition, I am assuming that Lavasoft is still
providing the latest definition for manual updates.

Thank you kindly. Yes I knew to download the adaware defs manually but the

I did notice scripts for the spy bot on David's site.

Hi Patricia;

if your wanting to use add-aware,

you'll need to update the program manually.

although, I'm not even sure if, there's updates available for, ad-aware
1.6 or what ever it is.

you can download, super anti spyware from;

www.superantisoftware.com

this program does not require any scripts, it runs fine right out of the
box.

there's a paid and, free versions.

you can also download, spybot.

I believe there is scripts for that program.

Victor,

I had that old program Adaware on here and the jaws scripts in place as
well. But trying to update the ref defs the page cannot be found is
what's going on so can't update that to run the program.

Did they take it down or do you know?

Hi Patricia,

This error means that you have to run a registry cleaner on your
system, as

well as running some spyware scans on it.

Once you do this, the error should go away.

I've gotten this error a few times, and once I did a Google search for
the

error, that is what was suggested.

It did work, so try that and let us know.
