As many local birders are aware.  The Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex 
is holding their annual Muckrace on September 8-9, 7pm - 7pm.  This is an 
opportunity for fun birding during Fall migration with the overall goal of 
raising money for improvements to the complex.  It offers great birding 
opportunities in a variety of habitats while socializing with old friends and 
making new ones with the added spice of friendly competition.  The deadline for 
registration is August 29.

The Cayuga Bird Club is sponsoring up to three teams this year; we will

[cayugabirds-l] CBC field trip postponed to Sunday

The Cayuga Bird Club field trip scheduled for Saturday Jan 18 has been 
postponed to Sunday January 19 due to weather.

On Saturday low temperatures and moderate winds will bring the wind chill into 
single digits.  Sunday will be warmer but still quite cold and breezy, so 
participants are urged to dress warmly.

Meet at the East end of Stewart Park at 8:00.  The trip will end at 12:30.

[cayugabirds-l] CBC trip report from Hawthorn Orchard

CAYUGA BIRD CLUB FIELD TRIP REPORT:

Eight eager birders joined me searching for migrants through the Hawthorn 
Orchard today (Sunday, May 14).  Improving weather made for active birds and 
comfortable participants.  Overall, warblers were scarce but we saw or heard a 
good number of species including both year-round residents and migratory 
songbirds (ebird list below).  Early arrivers saw chimney swifts and barn 
swallows over the fields and heard an eastern meadowlark.  Entering the woods 
at the Northeast corner we found NASHVILLE  and WILSON’S WARBLER singing.  All 
participants got good looks at the Wilson’s, but the Nashville was only seen by 
a few.  Along the trail above the ravine we heard multiple LEAST FLYCATCHERS 
(or one that followed us), but they remained hidden from view.  The resident 
WOOD THRUSHES did not grace us with their melodies, but one announced its 
presence through calls.   A dead tree adjacent to the trail housed a pair of 
nesting red-bellied woodpeckers and below them in the ravine were a singing 
AMERICAN REDSTART and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. The northwest corner as we 
approached the East Ithaca Recreation way gave us a female ROSE-BREASTED 
GROSBEAK, EASTERN PHOEBES and GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS.  Although we seem to 
have missed the big push of migrants, all participants had a pleasant morning 
and most plan to visit the orchard again this week.

[cayugabirds-l] Field Trip Reminder - Hawthorn Orchard

The Cayuga Bird Club will have a Field Trip to the Hawthorn Orchard this 
Sunday, May 14, starting at  8:00AM and ending by noon, perhaps before.  You 
can park at the Oxley Equestrian center parking lot and we will start in the 
field behind the building.

Warning: Boots, rain pants and rain coats should be worn.  Because the Spring 
has been especially wet and rain is expected Saturday, Saturday night and 
Sunday morning, the well-traveled paths of the orchard will be muddy and slick. 
 Your comfort and safety will be maximized if you wear boots, rain pants and 
raincoat.

As of Friday, the Hawthorns are in full bloom and although some interesting 
warblers have already been seen, we are still awaiting the big push of 
migrants.  Perhaps Sunday will be the day.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn Orchard: May 17, 2016 - 16 Warbler Species

I can add to Chris’s Hawthorn list  2 Wilson’s warblers and 2 bay breasted 
warblers.  One of the Wilson’s warblers was called in by Chris’s spishing in 
the brush in the Southwest section (at least I assume it was Chris - I didn’t 
actually see him); the other was in the ravine in the northwest corner.  The 
bay breasted warblers were along the main path that parallels the ravine.

Comments: I didn't expect to encounter much this morning, so was pleasantly 
surprised with the abundance of birds foraging throughout the Hawthorn Orchard. 
There appears to be plenty of food now throughout for the birds to gorge 
themselves with.

1 Willow Flycatcher -- Single bird observed giving "whit" notes, no noticeable 
eyering.

1 Philadelphia Vireo -- Observed singing northeast corner

the hawthorns, just west of the northeast corner.

1 Blue-winged Warbler -- One singing male in the northeast corner
25 Tennessee Warbler -- Mostly males, a few females have moved in. Evenly 
distributed throughout the Hawthorn Orchard.
4 Nashville Warbler -- All in the southwest corner
7 Common Yellowthroat
6 American Redstart -- Males and females scattered throughout
3 Cape May Warbler -- All females in the top of the oak trees at the northeast 
corner.
2 Northern Parula -- Softly singing males. One in the northeast corner, one in 
the southwest corner
6 Magnolia Warbler -- Several singing males and at least one female mostly in 
the northeast corner and also in the southwest corner
1 Blackburnian Warbler -- Singing male in the northeast corner
8 Yellow Warbler -- Males and females scattered throughout
1 Chestnut-sided Warbler -- Singing male northeast corner
1 Black-throated Blue Warbler -- Singing male in the northeast corner
7 Yellow-rumped Warbler
1 Black-throated Green Warbler -- Foraging female along the east edge
1 Canada Warbler -- Singing in the northeast corner

[cayugabirds-l] eastern phoebe

Spotted an Eastern Phoebe on Dodge Road in trees just south of the stream 
crossing about noon today  (playing hooky from work).

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn Orchard

Hawthorn Orchard between 8-9AM was fairly quiet.  1 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on the 
South side gravel trail; 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER in the brush where the trail opens 
up into the field, and  BAY BREASTED, BLACKBURNIAN and NASHVILLE on the 
Northwest end in the open area just off the recreation trail.  Also another 
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in the ravine.

Also, on Friday I lost my wallet somewhere.  Since I spent about 2 hours in the 
Orchard and environs that day, it may be in the grass or on one of the trails 
on the South side.  If you are visiting the orchard in the next couple of days, 
please check  out any any brown leather objects you might see  in the grass.
