[cayugabirds-l] Common Goldeneye at my pond

[Mo Barger Rooster Hill Farm]

I have what I am guessing to be a pair of immature or non-breeding plumage
Common Goldeneye on our pond. It's a very small pond, more of a springfed
watering hole that dries up in the summer.
They've been alternating their visits between our little pond and the
neighbors' large pond lower on the hill.
I tried to get pix but they are very skittish and I don't have a way to
sneak up on them.
When he sees me, the male crawls put of the water up the bank to hide under
a honeysuckle and calls the female with light peeps to join him.
The female is an undistinguishable brown. The male is dark colored with a
large white spot in the cheek area or so, and also has at least one
prominent white band in the shoulder area of his wing.
I was working in the garden which is further up the hill above the pond
this afternoon and spooked them which made them fly off.  They made the
distinct whistling sound.
I am in the hills of Candor which I think is OOB but found their appearance
noteworthy. That pond doesn't see a lot of feathery visitors.

HI, I am not sure how to report but there is a probable injured snow goose
on Honey Pot Rd in Candor. He was sitting on the edge of a farm pond this
morning when I drove by and was still there when I came home. He is all
alone and hadn't moved.

[cayugabirds-l] Nesting action - Ithaca College

Behind the campus is the Ithaca College Natural Lands area

On days like we are having this week, it's a great place to go at lunch for
a good walk.

My office is on the top floor of one of the Towers and faces this area as
well. I've been watching a pair of Red-Tailed Hawks build a nest at the top
of a pine tree so I struck out yesterday to find them up close.

I know what tree they are in but failed to see the nest. I did see an
American Crow flying with nest materials as well but once he spotted me, he
rested on a branch and wouldn't reveal where he was going.

Those woods are also filled with Pileateds and other woodpeckers. And
randomly, co-workers have shown me pictures of hawks who roost on the
building outside the office windows including a Cooper's last year.

Hi - they are installing culverts in the ditches on my road. The ditch at
the bottom of our drive contains water deep enough to host several egg
deposits. Are they safe to move to our pond?

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins? Really?

I think I have a flock (~20) pine siskins at the top of a tall maple. I can
see streaks, the shape of their heads and tails and definitely can hear
them chattering away.
I'm in the hills of Candor where the sun is actually shining this afternoon.

Not sure where you are on S Danby but I strongly agree! We have property on
Dry Brook Rd and the raven population is very large around there. As well
as barred owls and in the summer, RS Hawks.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma yesterday

[Mo Barger Rooster Hill Farm]

Hi - drove up to see the center before it closed for the season as I had
never been. Well not in a very very long time.
Drove around the main loop. Saw about 3 juvenile Bald Eagles, lots of Snow
Geese and Canadas. Highlight for me was an American Pipit (that I needed
help identifying). He was a busy little guy, hopping along the ice on the
shore checking out muskrat houses.
Speaking of muskrats, there was also a man trapping there. Judging by the
number of flags and the number of muskrat dens, he is quite a busy guy too.
I didn't check out any other pools etc as it was pretty cold with that wind
yesterday.

 This includes a .8 mile drive on a single lane dirt road with deep puddles,
 so consider car-pooling to reduce wear on the road and the number of muddy
 cars. After that we will be walking on the dikes. Be prepared for dewy
 vegetation and biting insects. Bring binoculars and, if you have one, a
 spotting scope as well. Even though we will be closer to the birds than the
 usual roadside viewpoints allow, the impoundments are huge, and many birds
 will still be distant enough that a scope will make a big difference for
 identification and enjoyment. Another great thing about a scope is that one
 can aim it at a distant bird, then let someone else have a look at that
 same bird, so please be willing to share views and ID skills, especially
 with folks who don't have a scope.

 Maintaining inland habitat for migrating shorebirds is a challenge which
 Montezuma NWR has taken on successfully for a number of years. As a result
 this is a great place for birds and a great opportunity for us. The
 southbound migration is already well underway for shorebirds which nested
 in boreal and tundra regions far to our north and west. Already in addition
 to the Killdeer and Spotted Sandpipers which nest here, there have been
 Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary, Pectoral, Stilt, Least, and
 Semipalmated Sandpipers, Sanderling, and Short-billed and Long-billed
 Dowitchers. Some of these have been few or transient, and others numerous
 or growing in numbers. We expect several additional species of shorebirds
 to pass through or join the throng for awhile as the season progresses.
 Shorebirds will be our focus, yet we expect and welcome distraction by
 multiple species of gulls, terns, raptors, ducks in challenging eclipse
 plumage, herons, assorted other waterbirds such as cormorants, grebes, and
 rails, plus swallows, sparrows, icterids, warblers, and other songbirds
 along the way. That said, there are no guarantees as to what birds will be
 present and cooperative. You just have to be there to find out.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle in Candor

Had an interesting ride in to work today. Drove by a cornfield that
was filled with crows. Then I realized a mature Bald Eagle was on the
ground with them. I turned around thinking I could grab a good picture
but spooked them all. The eagle crossed the road and perched in a
large tree that overlooks a pheasant farm.

Within a half mile I spotted a Cooper's Hawk catching the morning sun
from top of a tree and then 2 puffed up Red Tails sharing another
tree.

It was interesting to see the eagle up in the hills where I live
though. There is no large creek to speak of. I know there have been
some in the past who have remained around Catatonk Creek around the
American Legion in Candor but have never seen one in a field. Since I
raise poultry I am hoping he doesn't stick around too long. o_O

[cayugabirds-l] OT - lens cleaning advice

Hi - not directly bird related but I am sure many of you can help out.
I have a telephoto lens for my camera that has a speck of dust in it.
I have done all the external cleaning I can but it must be inside as
all of my pictures result with  a floating black marble in the upper
right.
Where can I take it in the Ithaca area to have it professionally cleaned?

[cayugabirds-l] Aurora, Mucklands

Drove up Rt 90 today. Looked everywhere but no owls. Didn't realize it
was opening day of duck season. What I did see -
Drove down around Long Point winery and to the park. No owls but the
crows were having a good day poking through the corn fields. No birds
at the park.
Aurora - hundreds of Canadas and black ducks on the water. Two bald
eagles soared over the shoreline.
Locks - there was a belted kingfisher perched on a boathouse at the
last cottage before the locks. Lots of snow geese on the ice.
Mucklands - stopped at the potato building on Rt 31. Far from the road
to the south, snow geese filled the corn fields. To the north a flock
of snow buntings landed in the field and there were 2 more bald eagles
perched in a far tree in the same line as the large antenna.

The mucklands are incredible! It was my first time there, I hope to go
back there a lot.

At the Fargo I heard that there were some snowies hanging around
Genoa. Not sure where though.

[cayugabirds-l] Diving bird, Dorchester Park

OK OOB I know, but I thought I knew what he was when I saw him, and
now that I have looked him up I think I am wrong.

I went kayaking at Dorchester Park (Whitney Point Lake) and towards
the middle was a lone bird who was diving for breakfast. I  thought he
was a grebe, but the only one who matches up with his size and shape
is a western grebe.

He had a dash of rust on top of his head, a yellow to black beak that
was elongated, dark body and I am pretty sure dark feet. Bright eye.
He kept it on me as I paddled around him but never showed any great
concern until a motorboat went by and he took off flying. Although he
was black and white from underneath, I don't recall such a contrast
when he was on top of the water; the sun could have made his coloring
odd when in the sky.

It was my first trip out to big water (well bigger than our pond) so I
was nervous about taking my phone out to snap a pic. Does this bird
sound like anything any of you know?

[cayugabirds-l] Can you help ID this bird?

[Mo Barger Rooster Hill Farm]

New visitor to yard, feeder etc. ever.
Small gray bird, smaller than a chickadee. Quickly flew and
disappeared into a large white pine when I went outside to see him,
but he kept singing.
Notes were in sets of 3, if you are musical he sang
E D G B E D G B E D G B

I listened to all the vireo songs and nothing was similar. Definitely
not a gnatcatcher.

Survey says!

Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Mark Chao directed me to a page with lots of
different variations on its song and one was pretty similar.

I think the Harrier was there again today. He soared over the field
that looks like a practice ground for the fire department and then
perched on the fire tower for quite some time, upsetting a crowd of
geese by the sounds of it.
This is my regular walking route at lunchtime, and I obviously need to
bring my binos so I can glass those fields better!

 field, on the airport fence east of the road, was perched a RED TAILED HAWK,
 then as we drove south I saw another RED TAILED HAWK perched on a branch
 right over the road to the west!

 I drove Ann back to her car at the O Lab, and yet another RED TAILED HAWK
 sat in a tree on the south side of Rt. 13.  As I returned down Warren Road
 heading north to go home, I spotted two TURKEY VULTURES soaring over the
 woods west of Warren Rd. near the airport entrance.

Millions! Canadas and snows! RWBB flying at lower levels.

Saw something kind of cool this morning - huge flock of geese,
traveling north at a high altitude spotted a plane  (flying a bit
higher) but suddenly stopped as a group and re-dispersed themselves
like a flock of starlings to change course.

Went x-country skiing tofay at Hickories Park in Owego and spotted a Great
Blue Heron on a branch over a creek as well as 2 chattering Belted
Kingfishers. Also many UFDs (unidentified flying ducks).

[cayugabirds-l] Oddest sight - TV

On my way in to work today, I saw the oddest sight. I was on Stevenson Rd.
going toward Garm Farm Rd. On the right where the compost and horses are
pastured were at least 25 TVs each perched on top of a fence post, all in a
line. It was absurd. If you have time, run out there now and check it out.
