Re: [cayugabirds-l] snow buntings

2023-01-15 Thread Donna Lee Scott
About 3:30 pm today (Sunday) I saw 3 Snow Buntings on the gravel road that runs
between the McConville Horse Barn & the Guterman lab greenhouses (parallel to
rt 366) on the eastern end of Cornell campus.

I don’t know where the other 97 snow buntings went.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings

2021-02-04 Thread Marty Schlabach
The day before we got this last snow, I estimated a flock of 600 snow buntings
in the field next to our house. The field was a new seeding to hay last season
and many annual weeds came up with the hay and went to seed, giving the snow
buntings lots to pick from. We’ve been seeing numerous flocks between
Interlaken, Lodi and Hector. Usually some horned larks mixed in as well.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings

2020-01-31 Thread Gladys Birdsall
Today about 12:45 , I was walking on Tower Rd., on Mt. Pleasant and saw a small
flock of Snow Buntings. They were on the east side of Tower Rd., about 25 to
30. They flew up a couple times and landed back in a plot that had lots of
plants - they seemed to be feeding on. I figure lots of seeds there.
Four Am. Crows flew over and I heard other Crows calling in the distance.

[cayugabirds-l] snow buntings across lake (E side)

2020-01-21 Thread Donna Lee Scott
I had about 225 snow buntings on Atwater Road between Mahaney & Route 34B
around 1:30 pm, but they flew away before I could scope them to look for other
species.

I & another birder in sep. car re-found a few of them in this general area, &
as far west as Center rd near King Ferry winery.
They won’t stay put!

Also 100s of American Crows in area.

& ~460 Eur. Starlings in tall trees by Belltown Dairy by county line
(Tompkins/Cayuga).

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings near Dryden

2019-02-20 Thread Gladys Birdsall
This morning around 8:15 while driving to Dryden,  maybe 80+ Snow
Buntings swirled over Rt.13.  This happened just past the VFW going
north on rt. 13.  There are grassy fields on both sides of the road
along here. The Buntings flew from the south side to the north side.
Nice surprise.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings

2019-02-02 Thread khmo
While out for a hike this morning we had a huge flock of Snow Buntings
overfly us on Fitzgerald Rd from North to South. They covered about 50
yards wide by a good minute plus in coming over in a densely packed
formation. Five hundred at least, perhaps closer to a thousand. A lovely
sight and they were last seen milling about the fields behind Bergen
Farms on Bergen Rd. It has been a long time since we have seen so many,
especially in the Mecklenburg area.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings and west shore of Cayuga

2018-01-19 Thread khmo
Within two miles of home here in the SW corner of the basin we had three
large flocks of buntings, one in excess of 200 birds. Photo on our FB
page. Horned Lark flocks nearby were also large. Had a Rough-legged
other falcons. At Seybolt and Martin Rds we had a hen Harrier sitting in
the field for over two hours.

The lake had a large abundance of Redheads, Ring-necked, Goldeneye,
Bufflehead, Red-breasted Mergs, Tundra Swans from Interlaken northward
to Wyers Point where we had two Red-necked Grebes and a first winter
White-winged Scoter. North of there to the ice line south of Canoga was
dull and almost bird free.

[cayugabirds-l] SNOW BUNTINGS, HORNED LARKS, displaying MALLARDS

2015-02-24 Thread Jill Vaughan
At the favored location of the corner of Mahaney and Genoa/Lansing
Town Line Rds
earlier this afternoon, friends and I enjoyed snowstorms of swooping,
banking and ground-feeding SNOW BUNTINGS. There were hundreds of them
traveling around to their choice spots on the farm. There was also an
abundance of HORNED LARKS. We remained in the car using our binoculars (no
scope), but even naked eye viewing in the winter sunlight yielded
stunning aerial antics and bright contrasts of color in the Buntings
themselves as well as the contrast of white birds on dark manure spreads.

At Myers Private Marina we watched several male MALLARDS
 displaying for the females.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings Horned Larks

2015-01-31 Thread tess
A mixed flock of 200-300 snow buntings and horned larks was on Munson
Road across from Countryside Market in Ovid at 2:00 and still at 3:30.
Had no time to stop and check for longspurs or other more sought after
birds. They were covering strips of bare ground where the snow had been
blown away, many quite close to the road, and did not fly away as
traffic went by.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings

2014-03-13 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
I would not be surprised to find many field birds (buntings, larks, longspurs)
dispersing farther South in search of available food resources in more open
fields (or even seed feeders in the middle of the forest – John). In the recent
sleet-covered and heavy snowfall-covered areas, many previously open manure
spread fields are now frozen or covered over by blowing snow or high snowfall
amounts. Food will be scarce for a short time.

Keep your eyes open!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings

2014-01-19 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
Forgot to mention that on the way back from Freeville, we swung down to come
across on Snyder Rd: no Snowy Owl, several other birders in quest of one, but I
spotted and photographed a drift of at least 46 SNOW BUNTINGs almost at the
intersection of Snyder and Warren foraging in the gravel edge of Snyder. (I
counted 46 in one photo but there were probably a few more.) There were no
obvious Longspurs or Larks in this flock.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings, Longspurs

2013-01-06 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
With this list, and the CBC, threatening to turn into a anti-hunting
forum I'd thought I would mention a few bird sightings instead.

I went looking for close up Longspurs today in Groton as the one we
found yesterday was very unsatisfying. Salt Road has some nice fresh manure /
bedding spreads in several areas. Most of them are so new they didn't hold
anything except crows. I did find a nice mixed flock of 160 Snow Buntings, 2
Lapland Longspurs, 40 Horned Larks and 10+ calling Wild Turkeys at the
intersection of Salt Rd. and Clark Street Ext. in Groton. This spot is good
because the spread is relatively flat and closely parallels the road making
viewing easy. The Buntings were spending lots of time on the road shoulder and
I had stellar looks at the Longspurs.

At Lake Como I searched for Evening Grosbeaks without success. Nick's
feeders on the lake are positively mobbed by Common Redpolls. I estimated about
250, but it was hard with all the movement. I think the number is much higher
still. He must be spending a fortune on Niger seed ! I couldn't find a Hoary
Redpoll in the mob, but I can't believe there isn't one there. I didn't have
enough time to scan all the birds before they were chased off by an unseen
Raptor. If anyone is up that way you should certainly stop by.

Happy birding,

Gary

[cayugabirds-l] SNOW BUNTINGS

2013-01-04 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Union Springs: 5 SNOW BUNTINGS feeding
along our driveway where grass is uncovered.

REDPOLLS now out-number house sparrows gold finches here at the house
feeders. I assume it's the other way around up on the hill at the tree feeders.
Not complaining. Niger sunflower seed is disappearing rapidly.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings and Longspur

2013-01-04 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
Tim found a flock of SNOW BUNTINGS on Central Chapel Road just south of the
intersection with 76 Road in Caroline. I went back with binoculars and
found one LAPLAND LONGSPUR in the flock of about 40 Snow buntings. The
flock is actively foraging on the side of the road.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings; Northern Harrier

2013-01-04 Thread Bill Mcaneny
Just at sundown today, there were 3 Snow Buntings and 4 Horned Larks on the
grassy shoulder of Cayuga View Rd east of Trumansburg. I often see some
there. Also, there was a male N.Harrier cruising the cornfield and it came
to rest on the corn stubble. Him I don't see often, Or ever.

Yesterday, Shirley saw 2 E. Bluebirds in a euonymus bush in front of our
house. Later, I saw one bluebird there as it flew in with 3 Juncos for
traveling companions.

We have 3 tube feeders for Niger seed. The flock empties them in a day.
The flock consists of about 40 Goldfinches, 8 C.Redpolls, and a few Pine
Siskins. A number of Tree Sparrows, Juncos, and Cardinals hang out beneath
the tubes and salvage the spill-over. We saw fewer birds than that in our
sector for the Christmas Count. Alas, we are not in the count circle.
Didn't see any swans either.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings

2011-11-05 Thread bob mcguire
Steve Sue Fast and I spent much of yesterday along Lake Ontario in
the vicinity of Fair Haven. As expected, there was a flock of some 60
SNOW BUNTINGS on the sand at the State Park. In general the lake was
quiet in spite of the brisk NE winds. We located a single RED-THROATED
LOON off the breakwater along with three White-winged Scoters,
hundreds of Red-breasted Mergansers, some 30 Horned Grebes, a few
Buffleheads, a single female COMMON GOLDENEYE, single Ring-necked
Duck, several flocks of BLACK SCOTERS (total number approx. 40). We
had a flyover flock of 30 Brant and six more swimming just off the
beach. The only shorebirds were 4 DUNLIN (no Purple Sandpiper). There
were a couple of Bonaparte's Gulls and several dozen Common Loons.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings - Airport/Business and Tech Park - Ithaca

2010-11-14 Thread Chris Tessaglia-Hymes
A parking lot surprise late this morning. Two SNOW BUNTINGS were hunkering
down out of the wind in a gravel section of old driveway/walkway/parking
lot, just North of Langmuir Lab (95 Brown Road) in the Cornell Business and
Technology Park, across from the Airport area. This is about where the old
building that held the CU Vertebrates Collection used to reside. Managed
some identifiable pictures with my phone, for fun.

Good birding!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings

2010-03-01 Thread Robert L. Marx

Greetings from just south of the Cayuga Lake Basin:

Late Saturday afternoon before grocery shopping, I took a little
drive in the Village of Spencer where farm fields are located.

I observed a flock of 19 Snow Buntings along S. Main St. 1/4th mile
south of our only traffic light.

Big snowflakes blowing every which way.

2010-02-06 Thread John Cisne
Got a great look at a flock of 70-80 SNOW BUNTINGS as it
intermittently fed in and wheeled around over the mowed field between
the pheasant farm and the manure piles Saturday afternoon around 3:00
p.m. Hope it sticks around.
