Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey nesting at Game Farm soccer fields?

2023-06-30 Thread Candace E. Cornell
There is nothing more important to an Osprey than it's nest. It is an
investment for the future and the glue that keeps the family together.
Nests are used year after year and passed down to the next generation.
The birds continually work on their nests all season adding sticks, twigs,
and softer materials. to keep up with the changing form of the nest as the
season progresses. At the start of the season they build up the nest and
make a a indented egg cup. As the chicks develop and move about the nest,
the sides flatten but a rim is still maintained. By fledge time, the nest
is flat and ready to be a landing zone. The Ospreys return the next year to
reshape the nest and make a new nest cup. The cycle continues and the nest
grows through the years reaching 300-500 lbs. or heavier.

The function of bringing grass to the nest mid season is probably to
sweeten the floor of the nest as Dave mentioned, covering up nest debris,
but I've never seen a discussion of it. Parents working new sticks into the
nest probably demonstrates to the nestlings the basics of nest building. As
the chicks mature, they become more interested in the nest and help to move
sticks around.

2023-06-30 Thread Dave Nutter
Recently I also saw an Osprey bringing a double fistful of grass to the nest in
the field NW of Allan Treman marina, when there were young in the nest who are
half grown. I think it’s normal. I don’t know the function, and maybe someone
more knowledgeable can say whether it helps cool the nest, or make it more
comfortable, or cover the remains of fish meals, or deter parasites, or some
other benefit. Earlier in the season I have also seen an Osprey bring a double
fistful of soggy brown (rotten?) vegetation from a nearby waterway, perhaps as
nest lining before eggs are laid. Ospreys also continue to bring sticks to add
to the nest even when there are eggs or young in the nest, which to me seems a
bit awkward and risky, but that’s the perspective of someone who is no good at
fishing or flying, so who am I to judge?

For all concerned, I did vet this observation as best I could before posting it
to the list. Janice said she was 100% sure of what she saw, and noted areas of
white that were distinct from Bald Eagle. Ospreys are a fixture of life for
those of us who live near Myers/Salt Point where they are literal yard birds.

A bird of prey on an Osprey Platform is not necessarily an Osprey. This past
Tuesday (22 Feb) I took photos of the platform at Union Field in Ithaca’s Cass
Park occupied by a Red-tailed Hawk.

Please, whenever you are surprised by the presence of a bird which might be out
of its usual season or out of its usual range, take a moment to note what it
was about that bird - what identifying field marks - which said to you that it
was the species which is not expected to be there rather than any other similar
species which is more likely to be in the area. That is basic information to
include in any rare bird report. Plus I find that going through this exercise
with every “year bird” I encounter helps me remember the special traits of the
species and wakes up the part of my brain which recognizes them (picture the
ganglia yawning and stretching and getting ready for spring birding).

Thanks! It really helps me out when I’m trying to figure out what are the first
arrivals of each species in the Cayuga Lake Basin. Unfortunately I must ignore
many eBird reports because they neglect to describe what they saw.

Indeed, it is very early. I looked at the bird club’s earliest first arrival
date for this species, and it was March 5 (2016) so today would be a full 12
days early! 13 days early for yours! That’s almost two weeks early.

Yikes, I hope they will be able to find enough ice-free water for fishing.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey on Myer's Hill platform

2022-02-24 Thread Dave Nutter

Robyn,

Thanks for the additional info. The March 5 arrival date in 2016 was a
fluke. Although their arrival dates are getting a day or two earlier each
year, Feb 22 is a full three weeks ahead of when I expect them.

I didn't see any Ospreys in the Lansing area earlier and will continue to
check daily. Please let me know if you have any Osprey sightings. Hello to
Paul.

Many thanks!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2021-03-20 Thread Candace E. Cornell
I saw my first Cayuga Lake Osprey perched on the third nest west of the
MNWR entrance from 2:05-3pm. this afternoon. It flew off and returned with
building material several times within the hour I was there. I checked
about 80 Osprey nests without any other sightings.

The snow geese are still south of Cayuga State Park. It's a phenomena not
to be missed while they are still here. The sky was swirling with birds,
many incoming, with many thousands congregated along the shoreline.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2021-03-01 Thread Candace E. Cornell
This sighting is very early for an Osprey. The Osprey used to arrive in the
Cayuga Lake Basin around April 1 like the swallows of Capistrano. For their
first three years, the Salt Point Natural Area pair would reunite on
April 5 like clockwork. Six years ago, things started changing. The Osprey
started arriving earlier, by a few days, each year. Last year they skipped
a week and the male returned on March 15. There was an earlier sighting,
around March 1, but I did not have confidence in that sighting. However,
Diana Whitings knows her birds and has confidence in her sister's ID. I'm
not sure what to think as this can be a confusing time with eagles as Dave
Nutter stated especially when compounded with the affects of climate change.

Please keep your eyes posted and report any Osprey sighting—thank you!

Don't be taken aback by the 4-5 Canada Geese decoys along Rt. 90. NYSEG put
them up to keep the Ospreys from nesting in those places. I don't think the
Osprey will be intimidated, but we'll see.

Eyes to the sky!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2021-03-01 Thread Dave Nutter
Hi Diana,

Osprey would be new for the Cayuga Lake Basin 2021 list. This is early though.
It’s so early that there is only one eBird record ever for Osprey in February
in NYS north of Long Island, and that was several years ago south of Kingston
in Ulster County. This year the northernmost eBird report of Osprey in the past
month was on the 27th in Maryland.

It’s certainly possible. Birds fly. There have been plenty of south winds
lately. Ospreys nest along 5&20 by the refuge. I am as interested as anyone in
finding out if birds are migrating sooner, and Ospreys have surprised me with
early returns to Myers in the recent past.

But a report of Osprey even at the very end of February suggests some care be
taken, particularly since there are plenty of immature Bald Eagles around, and
in some plumages they share some of the color pattern of Ospreys. Bald Eagles
also nest earlier than Ospreys and have even been known to take over Osprey
nests before the Ospreys return, so Bald Eagles or Red-tailed Hawks or other
raptors might be near those nests.

So, I’m wondering if you would mind asking your sister what about the bird said
“Osprey” to her instead of some other large raptor - shape, behavior, pattern,
etc. Thanks so much. And thanks for your photos and reports. It’s a joy to hear
what is happening all around us.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] osprey

2019-03-10 Thread Candace Cornell
This is a few weeks early for ospreys, but possible. I'm guessing it's
migrating through. (It's a great time for
them to get lake trout.)

Breeding ospreys start appearing on Cayuga Lake starting about March 25,
although most return in early April.
I usually start looking around the 20th just to be safe, but I've never
seen one at either end of the lake before
the 25th. The older birds return first, followed by younger birds.

Until recently, ospreys were like the swallows at Capistrano, returning on
the exact same day each year. However,
in the last three years, a number of nests I observe have been arriving a
day or two earlier each year. Birds that
traditionally arrived on April 5 until 2016 returned on March 31 in
2018—climate change suspected.

Eyes to the sky!

I looked at eBird and the last one recorded was October. It really looked
more like an osprey than a juvenile bald eagle.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2018-05-01 Thread Dave Nutter
On Sunday afternoon I was biking south along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail south
of the Farmers’ Market. The weather was chilly and cloudy, and the racing crews
were gone, so no people on boats or paddleboards were on the Inlet. An Osprey
was overhead. It did some confusing maneuvers before plunging feet first and
going completely underwater. A couple seconds later it emerged back into view,
and in one motion took flight carrying a very substantial fish, which probably
weighed a substantial portion of or perhaps equaled its own weight. The Osprey
flew with its prey to one of the poles supporting the lights for Union Fields,
but not the nest. It took awhile for it to gain the elevation.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey on nest, briefly

2018-04-28 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon one Osprey stood on the nest with its wings partly spread
(Mantling? Solicitation?) while calling for a long time. Meanwhile a second
Osprey kited fairly low over the occupied nest, then circled and repeated
several times.

It looks like an Osprey is incubating (white of a head low and a bit hard to
see) on the nest at the east end of Stewart Park and also on the nest in Union
Fields.

I walked around Renwick woods earlier in the afternoon yesterday (April 25) and
watched that nest for about 15 min yesterday around 1:30pm. I saw the one

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2018-03-19 Thread Nancy Cusumano
Hi Candace,

There’s an osprey nest, at least there was last summer, across the lake from
the one you are talking about but it’s on private property. It is just south of
Taughannock st Park, and just south of a home my neighbors have. It is by no
means the tallest tree, though, as the lake shore cliff rises above it. They
were feeding young when we were there last August. Lots of ospreys around these
days, so good to see.

I'd love to find that osprey's nest—I have been looking for a few years.
Ospreys don't nest in woods, but in the open where they can see 360 degrees
to spot predators—eagles and great horned owls. So if you are looking for
the nest, look in fields or on a cliff face in the area. There can not be
any trees around that are taller than the nest.

PLEASE let me know if you find it!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey data

2017-11-07 Thread Dave Nutter
The occupied Osprey platform is not at Robert Treman SP but at Allan H Treman
State Marine Park in the field north of the marina. The unoccupied Hogs Hole
platform is in the same park but west of the marina. Union Field is in adjacent
Cass Park, and the Newman Golf Course platform is at the northwest corner of
the course next to the woods along the east bank of Cayuga Inlet. Last year I
repeatedly saw an Osprey carrying prey south along the Inlet, but I don’t know
where the nest was/is.

Great Blue Herons will commute several miles between their nest colony and
their feeding sites. I have seen colonies in upper Robert Treman SP, and in
state forests in the hills years ago, but I don’t know of any current nearby
locations. I think there have been fewer Great Blue Herons along Cayuga Inlet
north of the bridges since the Cayuga Waterfront Trail was put in past the
NYSDOT yard north of the college boathouses, and since the surge in popularity
of kayaking and paddle-boarding, because these herons don’t like people to come
too close, but I have noticed several Great Blue Herons at dusk around the
mouth of Fall Creek, so they may be feeding in the area when fewer people are
present.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Osprey data

2017-11-07 Thread Candace Cornell
Gabriel,

Pardon my delayed response, as I was traveling I have nesting data on 124
osprey nests as part of my Cayuga Lake Basin Osprey Project and can easily
tell you the few osprey nests by the Cayuga inlet. I know where there are
GBHE rookeries, in the area, but not near Stewart Park and the Inlet where
the birds hang out.

Osprey nest occupied by breeding pairs in the southern end of lake: Stewart
Park behind Youth Bureau, Robert Treman Marine Park, Union Field. This is
the southern point of their nesting in the basin as far as I know. Let me
know if you find any.

Osprey nest platforms not yet occupied in the southern end of lake:
southend of Stewart Park footbridge to Newman Golf Course, Newman Golf
Course west end, Hogs Hole, and Cherry Street.

Other area osprey pairs that also fish in the inlet and southern end of
Cayuga are nesting at McGowen Fields and the Cornell Ponds.

Query cayugabirds-l
(
cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu
) about the locations of heron rookeries on Six Mile Creek and other
promising places. EBird might also be a help.

Let me know if you need more info or find any nests in the lake's southern
end or inlet that are not listed on the Cayuga Lake Trail Map (below),
which includes 69 nests in the Cayuga Basin visible from public roads.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey and Blue Heron

2017-07-20 Thread Marie P. Read
Ospreys and Great Blue Herons often have a contentious relationship. These
large herons compete with the Ospreys for nest sites and have been known to
prey on osprey eggs. With their dagger-like bills they are well able to look
after themselves even against a raptor, so I would not view this as heron being
victimized. Nature is competition.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] osprey nest on Warren Rd.

2016-04-21 Thread Candace Cornell
NYSEG crews have been trying to thwart the ospreys from building on the
Warren Road pole as this location presents a serious fire hazard. They hope
to erect an alternative pole nearby in the next few days in an effort to
move the birds. It is not the best place to raise a family, but the ospreys
seem determined. Many thanks to the crews for their help in this relocation.

This evening around 4:45 pm I discovered an Osprey on Rt. 90, south of the
Village of Cayuga. It was in the north lane in front of the Mennonite farm
across from the nesting platform. It was apparently if not obviously the
result of having been hit by a vehicle. Part of one wing was severed.

After retrieving the bird and severed wing I deposited both near the base
of the nesting platform; it appeared to me to be a mature unbanded bird.
The remaining Osprey seem to be in distress as it called from the tower. I
was unable to file a report from the site not having an internet-connected
phone.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey (2) appear at Deans Cove

2015-06-09 Thread Candace Cornell
Great News! I'm glad the riser final got put back into action. Osprey often
need the stimulation of a few sticks to get into nesting mode. It was such
a shame that the folks who installed the new riser up left the entire nest
on the ground below.

It really is too late for a pair to attempt nesting, but anything can
happen. The earliest an osprey has fledged that I've read of was 7 weeks
old. If they pair got down to busy immediately, had only one, big egg, and
the youngster learned to fly and fish remarkably fast, it might be possible
to fledge a chick by the end of September. Occasionally, a dedicated parent
in the northeast will stay by the nest until late Oct. to tend to a fledge
that is struggling with independence. I've heard of stranger things.

This pair could be a suffering from a failed nest in the last week or so
and are building a frustration nest in the riser. If so, they will probably
mate i n it, but not lay eggs, and then migrate early in mid-August.

We'll have to follow what happens. Thanks for the report!

When we were ready to leave (it was getting quite dark by then) one osprey
was down incubating presumably while the other stayed alert on the perch
(ha-ha... fish or pole or both). Some movement along the outside of the nest
caught Joe's attention. Although the light was terrible, I could see a
long, twitching tail with a slight notch and very quick movements. Blue
gray gnatcatcher I'm guessing. The little bird and the big osprey had to
have been aware of each other but unbothered by each other's presence. The
little bird worked its way around the edge and then into the nest itself
before it got too dark to see anymore.
What was going on? Gleaning bugs? Anyone else seen this? Could it have been
some species other than gnatcatcher?

When I used to photograph the Bald Eagles at Mud Lock, I saw House Sparrows
within the Eagle's nest as well, so I wasn't too surprised to hear that they do
it to Ospreys as well. I'm glad to hear that the sparrows may provide some
benefit to the Ospreys, as well. I hate the House Sparrows because they are so
aggressive at the feeders and hog the bird houses. I tolerate them because they
eat lots of bugs in my gardens and yard. I've never had an insect problem
because the birds take care of them.

The fish-eating ospreys tolerate other species such as the sparrows, tree
swallows, starlings, and others to nest near them, usually under the
platform. It's probably some form of mutalism, but it has not been studied.
The smaller birds probably keep the nest cleaner with less ecoparasites for
the osprey to contend with. In exchange, the smaller bird get a sturdy
structure to build a nest on and the (passive) protection of the osprey
 against predators.

I wish it had been a gnatcatcher. The house sparrows are ravishing the Salt
Point nest boxes, destroying the bluebird and tree swallow eggs that were
 doing so well.

2014-04-22 Thread Candace Cornell
Thank you so much Fritzie for rechecking and notating the exact locations
of the osprey nests in your area. As I said in my earlier e-mail, I am
trying to keep track of all the osprey nests on Cayuga Lake and am starting
to collect information on Seneca Lake. Your list of active nests is
invaluable to my efforts is greatly appreciated.

Do you have any anecdotal data on how long these individual nests have been
in use by ospreys? Any recollections, no matter how approximate, may be
useful. I know you are very busy and will patiently await your reply.
Meanwhile, I hope you are enjoying this delightful, albeit changeable,
weather and the birds it brings.

RE: Re:[cayugabirds-l] Osprey nests.

2014-04-22 Thread Marty Schlabach
Thanks to Bill for noting that there is a west side of the lake as well!

For several years there has been an osprey nest at the top of the light tower
of the former landing strip at the Seneca Army Depot. It is visible from rt
96a, less than a mile past the entrance to the veterans cemetery and before you
get to the entrance to Sampson Park. It is sort of behind a relatively new
dairy operation on the east side of rt 96a.

There has also been an osprey nest in downtown Geneva at the top of the Verizon
cell tower.

Purcell Center. They moved off toward the north, appearing to stay for a
while almost to Pleasant Grove Place (from my vantage point in Alot).

After a bit, the one with the fish flew S toward me (still closer to PL.
Grove Pl) giving high cries again, and suddenly another was flying fast
after it. For a moment, I thought it was its fast flying mate, but it was
an adult bald eagle. It very handily caught up, the osprey dropped the
fish, the eagle caught it, and beat its way west (essentially toward the
