[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Muckrace 2010

2010-07-10 Thread Jane Graves

ANNOUNCING The 14th ANNUAL MONTEZUMA MUCKRACE - SEPTEMBER 10-11, 2010

Audubon New York and Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex announce the
14th annual Montezuma Muckrace, to be held on September 10 and 11, 2010. This
24-hour birding competition raises funds to support conservation projects
within the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.

This year our goal is to raise $13,000 to fund a wetlands restoration project
off of Savannah Spring Road known locally as the ”Deep Muck.” The money raised
will be matched with Federal funds from the North American Wetlands
Conservation Act (NAWCA) of 1989, which provides matching grants to
organizations and individuals who have developed wetland conservation
partnerships for the benefit of wetlands-associated migratory birds and other
wildlife.
Money is raised through pledges sought by participants, registration fees, and
sponsorships. Again this year, FOTMWC will match money raised by the top
three-fundraising teams. The 2009 competition raised over $12,000, which
funded a forest restoration project for 40 acres of cropland on the MNWR and to
purchase a Purple Martin house for the Montezuma Audubon Center. 20 teams
from throughout New York and neighboring states tallied 186 species, with the
winning team finding 130 species.

The Muckace starts at 7:00 PM on September 10 and ends 24 hours later with a
closing ceremony at the Montezuma Audubon Center. Birds are counted within the
boundaries of the Complex for any or all of the 24-hour period. There are
several levels of participation: Competitive (3 or more individuals who must
count together); Youth (ages 9-16, any number, identifying birds without adult
assistance); Low-Carbon (any number, no motorized assistance - biking, walking,
canoeing, sitting, etc); Family/Mentor (any number, at least one parent/leader
with any number of young/beginning birders); Recreational (any number of
adults).

Participants can register and raise funds online through dojiggy. This
organizational website (http://muckrace.dojiggy.com) allows participants to
register, design their own personalpledge pages, set individual fundraising
goals, and handle pledge requests. It is a great way to let folks know about
the Muckrace and the conservation projects the proceeds support.

Mid-September is a exciting time to be birding at the Montezuma Wetlands
Complex, one of New York's most productive birding destinations. Please
consider either participating with your own team or pledging support to your
local team!

To access complete information about the Muckrace, including the registration
form and the newsletter, Muckrace Musings, visit the Friends of the Montezuma
Wetlands Complex website (http://friendsofmontezuma.org/muck_race.html) or the
Audubon NY website (http://ny.audubon.org/GetInvolved_MontezumaMuckrace.html).

For more information about participating, becoming a team sponsor, or to be
added to the mailing list, contact Jane Graves at jgra...@skidmore.edu. The
registration deadline is August 26.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Muckrace registration deadline August 25!

2010-08-24 Thread Jane Graves
Hello, Cayugabirders -

If you have been thinking about participating in this year's Muckrace, now is
the time to do something about it! The registration deadline is tomorrow! You
can easily register by going to http://muckrace.dojiggy.com and either pay by
credit card or send me a check.

For those who are interested in such matters, Cayuga Lake Creamery will be
coming up to the Montezuma Audubon Center for the end-of-the-day festivities.
No, we will not be giving away ice cream, but it will be available for starving
birders!

While in the area, Sara Jane and I stopped by Montezuma yesterday
afternoon. Among the waterfowl seen were Mallard, Gadwall, Northern
Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Scaup (sp.), Ring-necked
Duck, and Ruddy Duck. A couple birds of special interest were a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Larue's Lagoon and a DUNLIN at the new wet area
on the left side of the north end of the first long straight stretch of
the Auto Loop (someone needs to give it a name!!!). Isn't this getting
a little late for shorebirds to still be here, or has the nice weather
caused some individuals to tarry awhile longer?

Don't know if we were seeing Cackling Geese, but we noticed considerable
size variation among some of the Canada Geese in the new wet area. Some
seemed smaller than normal, and there was one individual that was much
larger than the rest. Could these differences be due to different
subspecies that just happened to be there at the time, or can there be
substantial variation like this in a population of a single subspecies?
When casually viewing flocks of Canada's in the past, we can't recall
ever noticing this much variation in size.

The Moist Soil Unit was the earlier unofficial name. And Larue's Lagoon is
actually Lesser Yellowlegs.
They should have had a naming contest.

After lunch I continued to the northern Montezuma complex in search of
raptors and owls. Van Dyne Spoor Road has been plowed to where the
woods end and the fields open up. From there I walked east, watching
for shrikes and owls. At 2:50 the first Short-eared Owl glided in from
the NE and perched on top of one of the electric poles. A scan out
across the field produced a second SHEAOW on one of the saplings.

From there I drove down East Road, stopping briefly at the Knox-
Marcellus overlook. Two Short-eared Owls were foraging over the field/
marsh.

Next stop was on Rt 89 just south of Goose Haven. Jim Eckler, who I
had run into on VD Spoor Rd, mentioned a recent sighting of several
SHEAOW there. Chuck Gibson was manning a scope along the road and
reported no owls yet (about 3:30).

My last stop was the new Seneca Meadows Wetland Preserve north of
Seneca Falls. Two Red-tailed Hawks were visible from the parking lot,
and an American Kestrel flew over as I walked south. From the southern
platform I watched two Short-eared Owls fly back and forth over the
meadows and eventually perch in a large, lone oak (4:00). After awhile
one of the Red-tails flew in and dislodged the owls who then continued
foraging while emitting an occasional soft bark call.

[cayugabirds-l] Water management at MNWR Main Pool and Tschache Pool for 2011

2011-03-21 Thread Jane Graves
Here is a statement from Linda Ziemba, Wildllife Biologist at MNWR, concerning
water management at Montezuma this summer:

Draining the Main Pool in 2010 resulted in lush vegetative growth that will
continue to provide food and cover for wildlife this year. We intend to keep
water in this impoundment through 2011 to provide emergent marsh habitat for
migrating waterfowl and breeding marshbirds. We are experimenting with
techniques to continue restoring the Dry Marsh while keeping water in the Main
Pool for wildlife.

Tschache Pool has not been drained in a while and therefore largely consists of
open water, which is not ideal for many wildlife species. Weather permitting,
Tschache Pool will be drained this spring to provide habitat for northbound
shorebirds and to promote vegetative growth. If possible, the area will be
reflooded in the fall to provide high quality habitat for southbound waterfowl.

[cayugabirds-l] MNWR regulations

2011-05-27 Thread Jane Graves
Andrea Van Beusichem, Visitor Services Manager at Montezuma, has asked me to
post the following message:

Important reminder to refuge visitors...
To protect wildlife and their habitat and to provide the best opportunities in
wildlife observation and photography, it is important not to disturb, injure,
or damage plants and animals on the refuge. In fact, it is a prohibited act as
stated in 50 CFR 27.51. This disturbance includes flushing birds (rememer to
stay in your car along the Wildlife Drive, unless you're at a designated
viewing area such as the photo blind, the Spillway and Benning Marsh) and other
wildlife or using electronic calls (or called “taping”) to lure birds closer
for observation or photography. Please remember to take only memories and
photographs and leave only footprints.

All -

Here is a message from Chip Weseloh from Environment Canada about this summer's

birds.

Jane

We've wing-tagged 130 young Great Egrets and 50 young GReat Blue Herons. The
egrets have green wing tags (one on each wing); the herons have either orange
or green tags (also, one on each wing). They all have number-number-letter

Thanks for the report, Jay. I know that Larue does not count every
day. Was the Ibis seen today (Saturday)?

[cayugabirds-l] FW: 67+/- Great Egrets roosting at Montezuma NWR

2011-08-19 Thread Jane Graves

Wednesday evening, August 17, and early Thursday morning, August 18, Jane
Graves and I counted Great Egrets and noted their roosting habits at May's
Point Pool and Knox-Marsellus Marsh at Montezuma NWR. At sunset, or so, on
Wednesday, 5 GREGs from Knox-M flew to May's Point and joined the roosting
flock there, making a total of 53+/- GREGs at May's. The remaing 14 GREGs at
Knox-M roosted there for the evening. On Thursday at first light, those numbers
had not changed, i.e. there was no further shifting of numbers at the two roost
sites after last light.

On Thursday morning, just prior to sunrise, 12 GREGs from the May's Point roost
flew off to and landed at Knox-M. The 14 egrets who had spent the night at
Knox-M dispersed locally and continued to forage at Knox-M. Back at May's
Point, the remaining egrets foraged locally at May's but two of them flew off
to the SE in the direction of the Visitor's Centre.

Based on observations of roosting areas of egrets in southern Ontario and
western New York,, it is unusual to have two egret roosts, simultaneously
active, as close together as May's and Knox-M. It is also unusual to have
egrets from one feeding area (Knox-M.) go to two different roosting sites
(May's and Knox-M) for their evening siesta. Water levels undoubtedly are a
partial factor in determining roosting locations, as a month ago water levels
were much lower in Knox-M and egrets did not roost there.

Jane (to a larger extent) and I (to a lesser extent) will try to keep tabs on
the roosting egrets over the coming weeks. If any local birders would like to
assist in tracking numbers of roosting egrets, please email one of us at:

RE: [cayugabirds-l] 2011 Muckrace

2011-09-11 Thread Jane Graves
All -

I will be compiling the Muckrace report shortly after I return from Michigan,
where I am helping a friend clear out the house of his recently-deceased sister.

The ibis is going into the list as Plegadis sp., which is how my team
reported it. I don't believe anyone could have been 100% certain that it was a
Glossy.

The complete Muckrace list will, as usual, be posted on the Friends of the
Montezuma Wetlands Complex website, and the full report on the event will
appear in Muckrace Musings, also on the website.

Thanks to everyone who participated.

The 2011 Muckrace is now history, and I hope that a full report will
get posted to the List soon.

Ann Mitchell, Susan Danskin, Linda Orkin, Dave Nutter, Gary
Kohlenberg, and I took part as a recreational team, sponsored by the
Cayuga Bird Club. We found a total of 89 birds. Colleen Richards and
Susan Barr were another team sponsored by the club.

Some 170-odd birds were found by the collective groups. The winning
team had 120 birds. A Sedge Wren was reported (don't know where it was
found). Long-eared Owl was reported. Apparently no Virginia Rail or
Least Bittern. A Glossy Ibis was reported at Railroad Road, but I have
no information on how it was id'd (and was not a White-faced).

Overall, the shorebird numbers were extremely low, though a good
variety of them were found. Missing, I think, were Buff-breasted,
Western Sandpiper, American Golden Plover, Sanderling. The only decent
shorebird area we found was the Muckrace Flats, a small area right
along Savannah-Spring Lake Road. May's Point Pool still has
significant exposes mud, but not a lot of birds.

Subject: Montezuma Muckrace - EE Eagles, Low Carbon division (long)

It was a pleasure to participate in the Montezuma Muckrace again for the
first time since 2005. Joe Carlo and Carly Lapin, colleagues at Ecology and
Environment, Inc. (our employer and sponsor), and Chris Newton joined me as
the E E Eagles team. It was first time in the muckrace for Chris,
Carly, and Joe. We decided to enter the Low Carbon division and do the race
strictly by biking and hiking and with no motor vehicle assistance during
the race period. We really weren't sure how much exercise effort we were
signing up for, but we were excited to bike and bird, and even more excited
when we saw that the weather forecast didn't include any rain.

I had participated eight times previously and I knew that a planned route
was important. In going on bikes, I had to plan it for reducing the mileage
and time we spent on bikes. We rode just over 33 miles and hiked another 3
miles or so. I didn't know how much we would (or could) ride, but I
expected to be in the 30 to 40 mile range. Joe, Carly, and I arrived from
Buffalo area in late afternoon and met Chris at the Montezuma sub-HQ where
we set up camp. Chris came in from New Hampshire and was able to spend a
few hours scouting, which really entailed finding some spots we weren't
familiar with. In doing so, he found the Glossy Ibis at Railroad Rd at
mid-afternoon and managed to get a sudden bike stem problem fixed just hours
before the race. (crisis #1 averted).

We signed in at the Montezuma Audubon Center and were delighted in the many
Purple Martins flying around and then hearing and seeing a Sandhill Crane.
We drove by car to East Road and the overlook to Knox-Marcellus Marsh and
prepared our bikes and did some last minute scouting. We quickly realized we
would be battling an army of mosquitoes. When the watch hit 7 p.m. (race
start time) we started our lists. Our first species was Snow Goose (7), in
similar spot to where Chris saw them in the afternoon. Only their heads were
sticking up from the grass. Other highlights were 2 Sandhill Cranes that
had flown in around 6:45 and picking out N. Rough-winged and Bank Swallow
among the many Trees and Barns. Of course we had a Cliff Swallow prior to 7
pm and we didn't get one during the race. Hundreds of dabblers were
roosting and flying into the tall grass but mostly too difficult to see. We
dashed off to Mays Point pool and found several other teams and very few
shorebirds. Two Sandhill Cranes were present here as well. We added a few
expected species and Chris made nice spotting of an American Black Duck in
flight with Mallards that was our only one for the race. One or two Wood
Ducks eating wild grapes right in front of the corral was a strange sight.
Tschache Pool added nothing but more mosquito bites. We rode back to camp.
A quick walk to South Spring pool around 9 p.m. netted a hooting Great
Horned Owl but no screeches responded to our whistles. We went to bed with
a total of 34 species. It was a nice night to camp. I only slept about half
the night but enjoyed hearing 2 Great Horned Owls hooting for what seemed
like an hour around midnight. We were awake in our tent and listening to
nocturnal flyovers around 5 a.m. Thruway noise makes it tough at this
location but we had Swainson's Thrushes, Veerys, and two Gray-cheeked
Thrushes. We probably had Wood Thrush too but didn't feel confident enough
in our call ID's. (we did not add one during the day). An Eastern
Screech-Owl made some whinny calls unsolicited by us. A nice treat!

The bird highlight of the day came as we were getting dressed and bikes
ready around 6:15 - 6:30 a.m. There were at least 1,000 Bobolinks that flew
over to the west / northwest in a steady stream of large and small batches.
We had never seen so many at one time. My estimate is likely conservative
and there could have easily been 2,000. We left on bikes as some small
batches were still flying over.

We biked toward the Montezuma visitor center, adding Carolina Wren, Chipping
Sparrow, House Sparrow, House Finch, Pileated Woodpecker on the way (all
sometimes nemesis muckrace species). We added only a few shorebird species,
some dabblers, and Trumpeter Swan (4) at the visitor center among others.
From the overlook at Main Pool we heard Marsh Wren. We were not allowed to
bike on the Auto-loop (which was disappointing, and would have been more
convenient for us too), so we hiked along Seneca Trail and found a
cooperative Yellow-throated Vireo. Biking back to Rt 5/20 we finally had a
warbler (other than C. Yellowthroat) and identified two Cape May Warblers in
the conifers near the entrance. We biked down River Road to Mud Lock and
added a few common species as well as Pied-billed Grebe and Common Merganser
on Cayuga Lake. Two Cape May

This afternoon around 3 PM I was at the end of Van Dyne Spoor Rd at the
Sandhill Crane Unit wetland and observed two different grebe species in the
open water area of the marsh there-the smaller grebe was a pied-billed grebe,
which I am more familiar with, but there were 3 individuals of a much
larger-sized grebe - red chestnut neck, white throat, dark gray and brown body
with dull white underneath. After checking my bird guides at home, I believe
they were Red-necked Grebes. I hope others can confirm this species here or in

Subject: Birding Volunteer Opportunities!

We have four exciting volunteer opportunities coming up in October and
November.

As you may be aware, volunteers (Larue St. Clair and Jackie Bakker) and
regional US Fish and Wildlife Service staff (Michael O'Brien) do weekly
waterbird surveys in refuge emergent marshes. They do an excellent job,
however, in many marshes, the vegetation is so thick that it is impossible
for them to get an accurate count. This not only makes it seem as though
there are less birds here than there really are. It also makes it seem as
though this thick vegetation is not providing good habitat. To mitigate
this detectability issue, we will be conducting flush counts in refuge
impoundments with thick vegetation. Larue, Jackie, and Mike will do their
regular survey and immediately following their survey, we will flush the
birds out of the impoundment and count them. This way, we can compare the
number initially counted to the number that is flushed to get some sense
of the percent of birds present that are actually counted. We need a lot
of volunteers to assist with the counting, and we hope you can help! We
will need you to be here for about three hours total. Please let me know
if you can make it for any of these surveys. If I don't get enough
volunteers for any of these days I will reschedule so please let me know
if you plan to be here - thanks!

Friday, October 14 - Meet at the refuge office at 12:00 to survey Tschache
Pool.
Wednesday, October 19 - Meet at the refuge office at 8:00 to survey the
Sandhill Crane Unit.
Friday, October 21 - Meet at the refuge office at 12:00 to survey
Knox-Marsellus Marsh.
Wednesday, November 9 - Meet at the refuge office at 10:30 to survey the
Main Pool. (This date is tentative.)

I wonder who owns the land and if the loss of its use by being covered by a

Seems like if Dryden is making the tracks a walking trail, that pond would be a
great feature along the trail.
So that makes me wonder if any Cayugabirders are Dryden residents and could
attend a board meeting in favor of something like this idea...

My understanding on George Rd. pond is that the beaver dam that created it
was to be removed. The Dryden village is in the process of restoring the
railroad bed to a walking trail.
If someone could verify this please do. I think we may have lost a terrific
 birding spot.

A CASPIAN TERN flying north up the lake past Myers Point in the morning.
A late NORTHERN SHRIKE perching in small tress on the north side of Carncross
Road; two CASPIAN TERNS flying along the channel at the end of Carncross Road.
A MUTE SWAN with three TRUMPETER SWANS at the end of Morgan Road.
The two WESTERN GREBES visible from Cayuga Lake State Park on the west side
of the lake just before dusk.

This morning, George Road pond was still extremely dry, apparently drained.
I'm still unclear on the ownership of this area, but it is obviously a huge
loss to the area if this draining is permanent. A few GREEN-WINGED TEAL were
still using the small channel of water, and a single KILLDEER and a COYOTE
were walking around on the mudflats. Perhaps most notable was a singing
VESPER SPARROW uphill from the intersection of 38 and Hart Road.

 Good birding,

I went up the lake with Stephanie Greenwood. Highlights were:
Union Spring Frontenac Park - 2 CASPIAN TERNS, 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL.
Montezuma Visitor's Center - Many GREEN-WINGED and BLUE-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN
SHOVELERS, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PURPLE MARTINS.
Larues - 2 WILSON'S SNIPE, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, both YELLOWLEGS, a singing
WARBLING VIREO.
Bennings Marsh - 76 DUNLIN and both YELLOWLEGS.
Muckrace Flats - pretty wet from the snow, but along with GREATER and LESSER
YELLOWLEGS was a SOLITARY SANDPIPER.
Martin's Tract - AMERICAN WIGEON, AMERICAN COOTS . We also heard a MARSH WREN.
Towpath Road - at the first drive as you go in yielded 4 BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERONS. We didn't walk the whole dike because we didn't want to disturb
the herons we saw so there very well could have been more.
The Farm Days Field (Sorry, I never remember the name) - We saw 2 UPLAND
SANDPIPERS. One was displaying. SAVANNAH and SONG SPARROWS were also seen.
Good Birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Renwick/Fuertes

2012-05-09 Thread Jane Graves
I just had this message from my old friend Bob Budliger, currently living in
Vermont:

Saw the conversation about names used in Stewart Park.

When I was first at CU in 1953-55 we birded the hell out of Stewart Park
(everybody was limited to a daily walking radius in the day).

Renwick was the woods in the southeastern corner of the park. Fuertes was the
waterfowl pond people now call the swan pond. There was no such thing as the
swan pond.

And, it is Hog Hole, not Hog's Hole.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] CBC sponsorship of Muckrace teams

2022-08-08 Thread Jane Graves
All - Why do we only sponsor recreational teams? What if a group wanted to
enter in the Low-Carbon category, for instance? Shouldn't we we be building
some flexibility into our sponsorships?

raising money for improvements to the complex. It offers great birding
opportunities in a variety of habitats while socializing with old friends and
making new ones with the added spice of friendly competition.

You can learn about the Muckrace at

The Cayuga Bird Club is willing to sponsor three recreational teams for this
year’s event; we will pay the registration fee. We invite Cayuga Bird Club
members and other interested birders to consider participating under our
sponsorship.

If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, either as a team leader or
as a member of a team. Write to me at

will do my best to coordinate the formation of a team by identifying a team
leader and initiating communications between team members. The opportunity

 Jane and others,

Sorry for my imprecision. I should have said ALL non-competitive categories.
We only exclude competitive teams because of their additional cost.

Still trying to locate information about Bard Prentiss’s sighting from the
