That is a possibility, or that needed fonts may be corrupted. I'll

Sometimes you have to open the file from withing the program instead of
clicking on it to open. I've seen the problem a few times. The worst
offender is when I receive a PDF in an email and it displays as an
attached text file. I have to wait for the entire thing to load, then
detach it to view in Preview.

That is nor a problem with the PDF or Acrobat. That is a problem with
your mail reader not interfacing correctly with display software. This is
usually programmed as a plug-in. You may be missing a plug-in or have a
out of date plug-in, or your mail reader may not handle plug-ins
correctly.

I suspect that the header on the text PDF is nonstandard, rather than
having a defective mail program, otherwise all PDFs would behave the
same. Next time I have PDF that displays as text, I'll save it and see
if I can compare the header with one that behaves better.

Yes, incorrect MIME can be a big problem. Then the problem is with the
sender's email program or computer. There is plenty of blame to spread
around.

If it is a MIME problem your only recourse is to save the file to disk
and open it from there with a reader program.

Re: [CGUYS] PDF files in a Macintosh environment

2007-06-01 Thread b_s-wilk

Newer PDF files available at the Fairfax County government website
are not readable with any of the various PDF viewers I have on my Mac
under 10.3.9, except for any embedded bit mapped graphic files
contained therein. The text portions are garbled. Older PDF files
on the site are fully readable with these various, non-Adobe PDF
 viewers.

It therefore appears as though the county, at some point in the
recent past, began using a different piece of software to create
their PDF files, or they upgraded their older software. At any rate,
whatever path they took, they have rendered their PDFs unreadable to
me at this time. I somehow think that the county is using Acrobat to
create these files, and that something about a newer version of
Acrobat, or the manner in which the county has decided to configure
Acrobat is creating a situation that requires the Adobe reader to be
required to properly open and view these newer files.

Call them. I had a similar problem with the fill-in forms for Maryland
taxes. I phoned the person in charge of graphics for Maryland
publications. He was wonderful. He completely understood the issue. He
also has Macs in his department. He said a similar thing to what I've
unfortunately told my clients many times--deadline was too tight to get
it 100% for this year's forms. He was working on getting Mac versions to
display properly in Preview. I requested a Preview-compatible version
because Preview can save fill-in forms with contents, as opposed to
Adobe Reader that prints but doesn't save the forms, and doesn't print
to Preview either.

Call them. Find out how they create their PDFs. Tell them that the PDFs
are broken. Ask what program they use to create PDFs, and request that
they use something that works for all systems and not just the current
version of Windows that they're using. Most people don't test their
files on different computer and have no idea that the files they post
are broken. The authors of the Fairfax County gummint web site may be
completely unaware of their broken files, too.

Betty

Remind them that for every person who calls, there are many more who
give up, go away, and complain to their friends. Remind them that you
are paying their salary, too. That works too.

Actually Acrobat Reader can do more. The creator of the form can set the
PDF to email the responses back (just the responses, not the whole form).
On return Acrobat will merge the responses back into the form. Easy. Very
slick. Lots of variations to interface with databases etc.

I will not install the Adobe Acrobat reader on my OS X Mac because of
issues with bloat and unnecessary ancillary files.

If you are running OS X you have already lost the war against bloat.
Adding a useful, though bloated, application is not going to make any
significant difference. I have not seen any cases where adding Acrobat
Reader has caused a problem. With hard drives selling for 25 to 50 cents
per GB I don't know that there is every going to be much incentive for
leaner software.

What exactly does cannot be coherently viewed mean in your experience ?

I mean that the PDF files are garbled. Incoherent. Alpha numeric
characters, but in a form that is nonsense. Graphic files are reproduced just
fine, but not the text. This is rare, but happens nonetheless.

I don't like Adobe Reader either. Instead of using Adobe Reader, do use
have the SchubertIt PDF plugin to view PDFs in a browser? That works
pretty well too, and you can view and print from it. http://schubertit.com/

Thanks for the tip on opening from within the program. I'll check
that out, although I am pretty sure I did that and they still would not
display correctly. I will look at that plugin. Thank you.
