Dr. W. M. Cowan, 70, Scientist With Hughes Medical Institute, Dies

Dr. W. Maxwell Cowan, an internationally known
neurobiologist and a retired vice president of the Howard
Hughes Medical Institute, died June 30 at his home in
Rockville, Md. He was 70.

The cause was prostate cancer, said the Robert A. Pumphrey
Funeral Home in Bethesda, Md.

As the chief scientific officer of the Hughes Institute,
Dr. Cowan played a central role in determining how millions
of dollars for biomedical research was directed from 1987
to 2000. The institute, which was founded by Howard Hughes
and has an endowment of about $11 billion, employs about
350 university scientists known as Hughes investigators and
finances their research.

Scientists do not apply to be Hughes investigators, they
are chosen. Dr. Cowan doubled the number of investigators
during his tenure, surprising many researchers with support
for their work.

Dr. Eric R. Kandel of Columbia University, a senior Hughes
investigator and a Nobel Prize winner in medicine in 2000,
said Dr. Cowan had really elevated the level of
recruitment dramatically and democratized the
distribution of the Hughes position so that many new
universities had an opportunity to have representation.

Hughes investigators have been involved in many advances in
research on cancer, heart disease and muscular dystrophy,
among other illnesses.

Dr. Kandel said, There's no question in my mind that I was
proposed to win the Nobel Prize because of the
opportunities that Hughes provided me to move into
molecular biology, and Max supported that fully.

Dr. Cowan, who was also distinguished professor of
neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, did
pioneering work in neurobiology and was best known for his
research into how the wiring of the brain develops, and his
efforts to integrate neuroanatomy, neurochemistry and
neurophysiology as a discipline.

William Maxwell Cowan was born on Sept. 27, 1931, in
Johannesburg. He graduated from the University of the
Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1952, and continued his
studies in England at Oxford University, from which he
received a doctoral degree in 1956 and his medical degree
in 1958. He was on the Oxford faculty from 1953 until 1964.

He immigrated to the United States in 1966 and was on the
faculties of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine
and Washington University in St. Louis. He was the vice
president of the Salk Institute from 1980 to 1986, when he
became the provost and the executive vice chancellor of
Washington University.

After retiring from Hughes he renewed his association with
the Salk Institute and became an adjunct professor for the
University of Texas's Southwestern Medical Center in
Dallas. He also was a founding member of the Dana Alliance
for Brain Initiatives, a nonprofit organization of more
than 200 scientists who work to improve public knowledge of
brain research.

The author of many scientific papers and editor of numerous
books, Dr. Cowan was managing editor of The Journal of
Comparative Neurology from 1969 until 1980. He was
editor-in-chief of The Journal of Neuroscience from 1980 to
1987 and editor of The Annual Reviews of Neuroscience.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Rockville, Md.;
two sons, Steven, of St. Louis, and David, of San Diego; a
daughter, Margaret Ruth Cowan of Seaford, England; and two
grandchildren.

altering of subjects of forwarded articles and the original title (a choice
of two actually he could have used) of the piece i complained about.
your comments regarding the correctness of negro (who gives a fuck if it

Balkans tribunal turns to Clinton

 ZAGREB, Croatia  The Balkans war crimes tribunal is examining whether
charges are warranted against former President Clinton and his aides for supporting
a 1995 military offensive by Croatia that recaptured territory then held by rebel
Serbian forces.
 The Croatian World Congress sent a letter last week demanding that Carla Del
Ponte, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former
Yugoslavia (ICTY), open a criminal investigation into Mr. Clinton and other top
officials of his administration for aiding and abetting indicted Croatian Gen. Ante
Gotovina in a 1995 Croatian military operation known as 'Operation Storm.'
 When asked if the prosecutor's office plans to indict Mr. Clinton and U.S. 
officials,
Florence Hartmann, spokeswoman for Mrs. Del Ponte, said: We are working on the
basis of an ongoing investigation.
 Besides Mr. Clinton, others named in the complaint are former National Security
Adviser Anthony Lake, former Deputy National Security Adviser Samuel Berger,
Ambassador Richard Holbrooke and former U.S. Ambassador to Croatia Peter
Galbraith.
 Fears that American officials and soldiers will be prosecuted for participating in
U.N.- backed peacekeeping efforts lie behind the Bush administration's threat to
scuttle the present U.N. peacekeeping mission in Bosnia.
 The threat is part of a dispute involving a separate but similar U.N. tribunal, 
the
International Criminal Court, which was modeled after the ICTY and opened its doors
last week. Both courts are based in The Hague.
 The Balkans court angered U.S. officials two years ago when it acknowledged it
was looking into a similar complaint against NATO commanders for their role in the
1999 U.S.-led bombing campaign in Yugoslavia.
 Court officials said at the time they felt obliged to look into all complaints 
placed
before them, but they dropped the matter after a preliminary investigation.
 Gen. Gotovina was indicted by the ICTY in June 2001 on charges that he
exercised command responsibility over a military campaign in which 150 Serbian
civilians were killed.
 Secretly supported by the Clinton administration, Croatian forces launched a
massive three-day military offensive  known as Operation Storm  on Aug. 4,
1995, in which Croatia recovered territories occupied by rebel Serbs following
Zagreb's drive for independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
 The Croatian World Congress, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) that
advises the United Nations, said it believes neither Gen. Gotovina nor Clinton
administration officials are guilty of war crimes.
 However, it said that if Mrs. Del Ponte insists on prosecuting Gen. Gotovina, then
American officials should be prosecuted in the interests of evenhanded justice
because they played a pivotal role in aiding the general's campaign in Operation
Storm.
 The Croatian World Congress said the U.S. administration gave the green light
for the operation and provided diplomatic and political support for it.
 But the NGO stressed that the most just outcome would be to withdraw the
indictment against Gen. Gotovina.
 The possibility that the Gotovina case will lead to U.S. officials being indicted 
by
the ICTY worries some lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
 Rep. Henry J. Hyde, Illinois Republican and chairman of the House Committee on
International Relations, said in a May 29 letter to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell
that at committee hearings on the ICTY, Testimony was presented at our hearing
questioning the factual basis for this indictment.
 It was brought to our attention that the ICTY may investigate U.S. officials for
potential command responsibility in connection with Operation Storm.
 Mr. Hyde said the ongoing investigation in the Gotovina case poses risks that
U.S. officials would be prosecuted by the U.N. tribunal for formulating or carrying 
out
U.S. government policy.
 Gen. Gotovina, 48, was the military commander of Sector South of the operation
that was responsible for the capture of the city Knin.
 He is also accused by the prosecutor's office at The Hague of overseeing the
ethnic cleansing of 150,000 Serbs in Croatia who fled the military assault. He is
currently in hiding, his whereabouts unknown.
 The United States provided military and technical assistance to Operation Storm
in order to deliver a defeat to then-Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic's goal of
forging an ethnically pure Greater Serbia.

New Palestine Party Visit of Menachem Begin and Aims of Political Movement
Discussed

TO THE EDITORS OF THE NEW YORK TIMES:

Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our times is the emergence
in the newly created state of Israel of the Freedom Party (Tnuat
Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods,
political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It
was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai
Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine.

The current visit of Menachem Begin, leader of this party, to the United
States is obviously calculated to give the impression of American support
for his party in the coming Israeli elections, and to cement political ties
with conservative Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans
of national repute have lent their names to welcome his visit. It is
inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world, if
correctly informed as to Mr. Begin's political record and perspectives,
could add their names and support to the movement he represents.

Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contributions, public
manifestations in Begin's behalf, and the creation in Palestine of the
impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist elements in
Israel, the American public must be informed as to the record and
objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement.

The public avowals of Begin's party are no guide whatever to its actual
character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism,
whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist
state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real
character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do
in the future.

Attack on Arab Village

A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin.
This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken
no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use
the village as their base. On April 9 (THE NEW YORK TIMES), terrorist bands
attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the
fighting, killed most of its inhabitants-240 men, women, and children-and
kept a few of them alive to parade as captives through the streets of
Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the
Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan.
But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this
massacre, publicized it widely, and invited all the foreign correspondents
present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the general havoc at
Deir Yassin.

The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the
Freedom Party.

Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of
ultranationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority. Like other
Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and have themselves
pressed for the destruction of free trade unions. In their stead they have
proposed corporate unions on the Italian Fascist model.

During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern
groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewish community.
Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for not
letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings,
window-smashing, and wide-spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the
population and exacted a heavy tribute.

The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive
achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no
settlements, and only detracted from the Jewish defense activity. Their
much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to
bringing in Fascist compatriots.

Discrepancies Seen

The discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and his
party, and their record of past performance in Palestine bear the imprint
of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist
party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and
misrepresentation are means, and a Leader State is the goal.

In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the
truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known in this country. It is
all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has refused
to campaign against Begin's efforts, or even to expose to its own
constituents the dangers to Israel from support to Begin.

The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a few
salient facts

Wild-eyed piano belter Jerry Lee Lewis, Mr Great Balls Of Fire himself, got the, er,
ball rolling on this category in 1957 when, after being thrown out of bible college, he
married his cousin, Myra Gale Brown. Lewis was in his early 20s and she was the
13- year-old daughter of his uncle, J W Brown. When the British press found out
there was a Whole Lotta Shaking Going On, they opened up with both barrels on The
Killer and his career stalled.

Elvis Presley began dating wife-to-be Priscilla when she was 14, while 53-year-old
Rolling Stone bassist Bill Wyman allegedly seduced 14-year-old British teenager
Mandy Smith before marrying her five years later in 1989. Industry heavyweight
Tommy Mottola was in his 40s when he offered a teenage Mariah Carey a deal with
Columbia. He left his wife of 20 years for Carey, then in her early 20s. It didn't 
last.

3. Thou shalt tread carefully in the 28th year

Rock history is littered with famous names who never made it past
27. Legendary bluesman Robert Johnson started the trend by dying at age 27 after
drinking poisoned whisky in 1938. Janis Joplin (1943- 1970) overdosed on heroin in
a Hollywood hotel room, Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) died in London from drug-related
complications while The Doors' Jim Morrison (1943-1971) passed over in a French
bathroom. The Rolling Stones's Brian Jones (1942-1969) drowned in a swimming
pool and Kurt Cobain (1967-1994 and pictured), put a gun to his head.

4. Thou shalt not attempt to save the world

What with Paul McCartney and Morrissey trying to stop us from enjoying a steak or
the odd bacon buttie, it's surely time for pop stars to back off. But, no. Having 
tried to
save the world through his music and failed, Bono has taken on deleting Third World
debt. As a musician, it's a lot more glamorous to be on the barricades than to turn
up with a briefcase and bowler hat, he waffled to the BBC. Well, I'm here with a
briefcase and bowler hat.

5. Thou shalt remember to thank the Lord before thanking stylists and fashion
houses on CD sleeves

It used to be bands gave thanks for free or discounted drums, guitars and amplifiers.
Then Barbra Streisand started thanking her hairdresser. Now you're nobody unless
your list of thankyous stretches to at least a page and includes respects to the likes
of adidas oh, and God, if there's space.

6. Thou shalt learn about who makes money and who doesn't the hard way

Songwriters get paid from the sale of the first CD. Singers and musicians who don't
write songs don't see a cent until all money outlaid by the record label for recording,
video clips, choreography, singing lessons, living wages, marketing, promotion and
touring etc is recouped.

Therefore, some songwriters live high on the hog while many singers and musicians
stock shelves in supermarkets. Bands such as R.E.M and Grinspoon share the
money evenly, while others are ruthless in enforcing a split based on who writes
what.

Boy and girl bands rarely write their songs, meaning their chances of making money
are fairly limited. I always thought the songwriters earned more, but I didn't realise
how much more, Bardot's Tiffany Wood told Sunday Metro. I was very surprised.

7. Thou shalt resist the temptation to ask the barber for a poodle perm

This most absurd of hairstyles came into its own courtesy of Queen's guitarist Brian
May in the 1970s. Many of the glam-metal bands in the 1980s such as Bon Jovi, Van
Halen and Poison took up the baton and ran with it, adding painted-on Spandex to
the equation. It was a very, very bad move. Despite its inherent dagginess, the perm
has been a consistent side player, re-emerging into the spotlight last year courtesy of
Albert Hammond jnr and Fab Moretti from the excessively cool New York rock band
The Strokes.

8. Thou shalt not wear leather pants

Jim Morrison got away with wearing leather strides, as did Elvis, Suzi Quatro and
Michael Hutchence. The Ramones looked great in their leather jackets, but when the
guy from Matchbox 20 leathered up, the game was well over.

9. Thou shalt not moan about tabloids while feeding them stories

Kylie Minogue was just about to hit the stage in Manchester recently when she felt
the need to talk to someone about her problems with boyfriend James Gooding.
Rather than call, say, her sister, Kyles patched a call through to Dominic Mohan,
gossip columnist at UK tabloid The Sun. I once asked All Saints' Natalie Appleton
why, after breaking up with TV presenter Jamie Theakston, she felt the need to
phone Matthew Wright, gossip

Preventing mushroom-shaped clouds

You may suppose that last September the world saw the worst-ever act of terror.
Wrong! The British


 with our assistance  deliberately created a firestorm over Dresden, Germany, on
the eve and early morning hours of St. Valentine's Day, 1945. That was worse.

You may suppose the world first saw a mushroom-shaped cloud over Hiroshima.
Wrong again. The mushroom-shaped cloud over Dresden could be seen for more
than a hundred miles.

We deliberately turned the medieval city of Dresden into a blast furnace. The British
bombers dropped almost a million small incendiary bomblets that night, starting
hundreds of thousands of small fires. American bombers dropped thousands of tons
of explosives the next day. The super-hot gases of combustion from all those fires
rose, creating a columnar updraft to the upper atmosphere. The resultant low-
pressure area at the columnar base caused air to be sucked in, surface winds
exceeding several hundred miles per hour, feeding more oxygen to the furnace.

Why did the Brits do it? The war in Europe had already been won. Germany was in
ruins. Dresden had thus far escaped bombing, but for good reason. Dresden was in
no sense a military target. Hence, the sole purpose of the fire-raids on Dresden was
to terrorize the millions of Germans who weren't in Dresden. Hundreds of thousands
who were there  many of them refugees, wounded German soldiers and British
prisoners of war  were incinerated.

A few months later, we dropped Little Boy on Hiroshima  also not a military target 
in order to terrorize millions of Japanese. Because Hiroshima was largely
constructed of rice-paper and bamboo, the firestorms  and casualties  caused by
one nuke were comparable to what it took almost a million incendiary bombs to
accomplish at Dresden.

That's what makes a nuke the terrorist's weapon of choice. With something like Little
Boy, he doesn't need thousands of bombers and millions of incendiary bombs. Of
course, your terrorist probably couldn't create much of a firestorm over Manhattan if
he detonated Little Boy at Ground Zero. Not much of Manhattan is constructed of
rice-paper and bamboo. So, your terrorist probably couldn't expect to kill as many
people in Manhattan as were killed at Dresden or Hiroshima. But his mushroom-
shaped cloud would certainly get the attention of folks in Connecticut and New
Jersey.

Where would an Islamic terrorist get a Little Boy  an unsophisticated, easy-to-
construct, highly- enriched uranium bomb? Well, not from Saddam Hussein. He
doesn't have nukes. Nor  contrary to what the warhawks have implied  does he
have the HEU makings. But Gen. Musharraf has dozens of HEU nukes in Pakistan 
many more sophisticated than Little Boy. And what is more important, he has the
HEU makings for many more.

Now, nation-states having nukes  including Pakistan  probably know whether or
not any of their nukes are missing. All you have to do is count. But some nation-
states having the makings for nukes may not know whether any HEU is missing.

Establishing and operating an effective cradle-to-grave fissile Materials Protection,
Control and Accounting system is no slam-dunk. The MPCA system the Russians
inherited from the Soviet Union was poor. Other successor states  such as
Kazakhstan  inherited practically no MPCA system at all.

That is why the MPCA assistance provided to nation-states of the former Soviet
Union by the various Nunn-Lugar-Domenici acts has been  and continues to be  so
important. The recent $20 billion Bush-Putin agreement  announced at the G-8
Summit at Calgary  properly continues to focus on cooperative U.S.-Russian cradle-
to-grave MPCA of Soviet-era fissile materials, all of it subject to the Nuclear Non-
Proliferation Treaty full-scope safeguards and physical-protection regime.

What about Pakistan? Pakistan is not an NPT signatory, and hence is not fully
subject to the NPT regime. Sen. Lugar reportedly plans to introduce legislation that
would authorize a U.S.-Russian effort to cooperatively assist the Pakistanis to
establish an effective cradle-to-grave MPCA system.

What about Iraq? Iraq is an NPT signatory and is fully subject to the NPT regime. As
of January, the International Atomic Energy Agency could report that Saddam has
never produced appreciable amounts of HEU on his own. Terrorists can't get nukes
from Saddam until Saddam first gets his hands on the HEU he needs to make them.
So when you hear a warhawk say we've got to invade Iraq because of reports that
Saddam has provided Islamic terrorists with weapons of mass destruction, you'll
know it's most likely a crock of

greet the world, that you may not recognize the document I, with humility and not
arrogance, update below. The original was the statement of men who staked their
lives to affirm our right to live free; and they penned their names in abhorrence of
and opposition to a tyrant with whom you share more than a name.

Although the repeated mendacities of your administration are beyond comprehension
-- far greater by many powers than your predecessor's peccadilloes with Whitewater,
White House travel agents or even Monica's semen-stained dress -- you earn credit
for telling one chilling truth. Shortly after your brother enabled your undermining of
our democracy by illegally disenfranchising thousands of Florida voters, followed by
the five Republicans on the Supreme Court halting recounts and selecting you
president, you made a surprisingly candid jest to congressional leaders, saying:

If this were a dictatorship, this would be a heck of a lot easier. Laughing at your
own humor -- a malignant hahaha considering the hundreds of thousands of
Americans who have died battling tyranny and totalitarianism - - you then quipped:
Just so long as I'm dictator.

The nation should have paid attention.



When in the courseof human events, it becomes necessary for a people to dissolve
the political bands imposed on them by their rulers, a decent respect to the opinions
of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the
separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness -- and this great nation codified these Rights in a Constitution
and Amendments that are regarded by the world as mankind's greatest beacons of

Government usurps power for its own end and for the immoral enrichment of elites, it

Your affinity for the word evil raises questions of how in touch you are with 
reality --
you embrace horribly repressive regimes, from China to Uzbekistan to Malaysia; you
seek to ignite a new Vietnam in Colombia; yet you cheer the attempted overthrow of
democracy in Venezuela. You side with Libya in opposing an international court that
would bring war criminals to justice -- your Alice-in-Wonderland congressional allies
have passed a law that would allow us to invade the Netherlands to rescue
Americans on trial by the court. That invasion may happen -- in Europe, news
agencies (studiously ignored by mainstream U.S. media) report with substantial
documentation that our military was complicit in the torture and slaughter of
hundreds, possibly as many 2,500, Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners, many of them
roasted to death in sealed cargo containers.

In the one area of the world where U.S. authority needs to be applied -- the Middle
East -- you have totally capitulated to the awful Ariel Sharon, a man committed to
only one tactic, endless war. Yes, Yassir Arafat is awful, too (he was elected by
majority of his people, however, a claim you can't make). And, yes, Israel absolutely
should have peace and secure borders. But your non-solution of placing the entire
burden for re- engaging a peace process on a people who have suffered under 35
years of military occupation is just, well, loopy to a degree that's almost criminal.

Put another way: Have you no morals, Mr. Bush?

A Prince whose character is marked by every act which may define a Tyrant is unfit
to be the ruler of a free people. It is fitting for the People to ask: To whom do you
answer?

Your constituency is obvious to those who look -- the band of lawless corporate
marauders who seek to loot the world's wealth, squander the planet's resources and
gamble with American workers' salaries and savings. It is not too extreme to say that
you run a quisling puppet government for the pinstriped corporate warlords.

Theodore Roosevelt, a real president, commented: The things that will destroy
America are prosperity-at- any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-
first, the love of soft living and the get-rich-quick theory of life. Even Teddy

Documents Show Bush Violated SEC Insider Trading Law Four Times, Not Once.
His Lawyer Ran The SEC Investigation On Harken And His Father's Gave The SEC
Clearance Of Wrongdoing During Bush Presidency.

According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission records, on four separate
occasions Gov. George W. Bush disregarded federal statutes by failing to file insider
stock trade reports on a timely basis, back-dating one trade by some four months.
Moreover, one key trade just a few weeks before Iraq invaded Kuwait -- but reported
some eight months late after the Gulf War was over -- netted Bush close to $1 million
in profit as he sold stock in Harken Energy, an oil company doing business in the
Middle East wherein some of his father's largest contributors also maintained
substantial positions.

The SEC under President Bush carried out an incomplete investigation of the
younger Bush's pre-Gulf War trade in 1991 after key presidential advisor George Jr.
claimed that he filed a report, but that the SEC had most likely lost it. (No one has
really asked whether the governor bothered to use registered mail to verify receipt of
the documents.)

According to an Oct. 28, 1991, Time Magazine report, SEC spokesman John Heine
said, as far as I know, nobody ever found the 'lost' filing. And, strangely, Bush
refused comment to Time regarding either the incident or his involvement with
Harken.

The governor also did not reveal the blatant conflicts of interest involved, since the
chairman of the SEC was Richard Breedon, former lawyer with Houston firm Baker
and Botts and deputy counsel to Bush's father when he was vice president. Breedon
received his SEC appointment after the elder Bush became president.

The SEC investigation of George W. was led by general counsel James R. Doty who,
according to a UPI report, mysteriously neglected to interview any of the Harken
directors. Moreover, Doty had previously served as George W. Bush's personal
lawyer in the deal involving his Texas Rangers purchase. So, in the end, the younger
Bush was cleared of insider trade wrongdoing by his personal attorney and by his
father's vice-presidential counsel, a virtual impossibility for the average U.S. 
citizen

Most reports involving Bush's insider oil stock trades refer only to his highly
controversial June 22, 1990, million dollar trade made six weeks before Gulf War
hostilities broke out in Kuwait -- a trade which was reported eight months later.
However, SEC documents between 1986 and 1993 show that Bush acquired
212,152 shares of Harken stock on Nov. 1, 1986, at the time he merged his
Spectrum 7 company with Harken. But the future governor did not report the
transaction until April 7, 1987 -- more than five months later.

When Bush filed late on April 7,1987, SEC filings show he had purchased another
80,000 shares on March 10, 1987. But strangely, two weeks later, an April 22 filing
noted that the 80,000-share purchase was backdated to Dec. 10, 1986. When
questioned by the media, Bush's attorney said it was the same 80,000 shares but he
could not explain the discrepancy regarding the purchase dates or why Bush even
reported the trade two times.

Another SEC filing, this from June 6, 1989, showed that Bush purchased another
25,000 shares of Harken but again waited more than four months to report the
transaction.

The Houston Post, recognizing Bush's late SEC filings, noted that he took eight
months to notify the government of his sale of stock in a company on whose board
he served and also missed the filing deadline for reporting other insider trades
involving Harken Energy.

Documents obtained by the Post showed additional instances in which Bush ... ran
afoul of the SEC rule requiring notification. And George W. described himself as a
small, insignificant Harken stockholder; but news reports examining SEC
documents identified Bush as the third largest non- institutional investor.

Australian Jews free to play at war in Israel

The Federal Government and law enforcement authorities are refusing to stop the
recruitment of young Jewish Australians from undergoing military training in Israel.

Australia's Crimes (Foreign Incursions and Recruitment) Act states that it is an
offence to recruit another person to serve in any capacity in or with an armed force
in a foreign state or to publish an advertisement for the purpose of any such
recruiting.

An advertisement in the Australian Jewish News offered a five-day army
experience in Israel.

It is both an exciting and challenging program and involves basic training, shooting
M-16 rifles and various other physical and intellectual activities, it said.

The newspaper has in recent years carried a number of stories about young
Australians on tours to Israel, one with a photograph of a group in army uniforms with
camouflage paint on their faces.

A journalist with the paper, Bernie Freedman, said last night that
such tours were aimed at people who want to play soldiers - they are not recruiting
for the army.

An article in the Australian Jewish News on May 31 referred to 20 Australians from
Sydney and Melbourne going to Israel as volunteers to fill a labour shortage arising
from the current large call-up of reservists.

One of the Australian volunteers, Zvika Ledder, said his son had already travelled to
Israel for military training.

The head of the Palestinian delegation to Australia, Ali Kazak, said he had received a
letter from the director of National Investigations for the Australian Federal Police,
Tim Morris, which said there is no evidence to suggest that recruitment of Australian
nationals, to serve in or with an armed force in a foreign state, has occurred in
Australia.

The man who headed that investigation, federal agent Bob Wynn, said last night that
the time being spent with the Israeli army was more along youth camp lines than
any attempt to recruit young people from overseas to actually fight.

A senior diplomat at the Israeli Embassy in Canberra, Michael Ronen, said the attack
on the visits was sheer propaganda.

There is a big difference in learning to fire an M-16 in a friendly democratic country
to doing so with a terrorist organisation which kills innocent civilians, he said.

US drugs giant accused of overstating revenue

Shares in US drugs giant Merck fell sharply in Europe following a report in the Wall
Street Journal claiming the group inflated revenues by $12.4bn (£8bn) over the past
three years.

The Journal said Merck recorded $12.4bn in revenue from Medco, its drugs discount
subsidiary. But Medco, which buys drugs in bulk and then resells to chemists, never
received the revenue in the first place. Instead the money was paid to retail chemists
from customers to cover the cost of medical insurance. The pharmacy keeps those
payments.

Between 1999 and 2001, Medco, acquired by Merck in 1993, recorded a total of
$12.4bn in funds it did not collect. The Journal says there is no indication that
regulators are reviewing Medco's and Merck's accounting.

Merck revealed the accounting practice in April in a filing with the US stock market
watchdog, the securities and exchange commission (SEC). But the size of the
recorded revenue was not disclosed until Friday.

Shares in Europe opened lower following the Journal report with the FTSE 100 down
38 points at 4,577.6 in early trading. Shares in Merck fell 11.5% in European trading
to 43 euros (27.6p). The markets had rallied on Friday, with the Dow Jones industrial
average jumping 320 points, but investors remain jittery after a spate of financial
scandals.

Beginning with the collapse of US energy trader Enron last December, Wall Street
has been battered by a blizzard of financial scandals. Quick on the heels of Enron, its
auditor, Arthur Andersen, disintegrated as clients deserted in droves. Now
WorldCom, America's second largest long distance phone company, is teetering on
the verge of bankruptcy, after admitting to having inflated profits by $3.8bn.

As before, the frayed confidence of investors in corporate America, with the never-
ending series of balance sheet scandals, is weighing heavily on markets, Swiss
brokerage company ZKB said in a note to clients, quoted by Reuters. Lost
confidence can only be won back through convincing profit figures and rigorous
management changes at the top of the companies that have fallen into disgrace.

Moving to crack down on creative accounting practices, the SEC last week ordered
that officials of more than 900 companies must swear an oath in writing that the
numbers in their recent financial reports are correct.

and politicians, including Walter Funk, the Nazi economics minister. The 
matter in hand was how to make use of the subject territories; and it was 
proposed that there should be a Europaische Wirtschaftgesellschaft. Which 
means, you guessed it, a European Economic Community.

This noble-sounding idea was taken up by Albert Speer, who was then 
Hitler's minister for armaments. Speer was trying to think of ways to cheer 
up the French, and to spur them to serve the German war effort. The French 
were fed up with the depredations of the dreaded Otto Sauckel, whose idea 
of economic co-operation was to treat France as a reservoir for forced 
labour. The French workers were fleeing their factories. They were being 
thoroughly bolshy. So Speer teamed up with the Vichy industry minister, 
Jean Bichelonne, and proposed a compromise by which German needs could be 
met and French industry was not ruined.

In 1943, Bichelonne was even invited to Berlin, as a guest of the state, 
and - as Sir John Keegan has recounted - he and Speer discussed plans for a 
common market. As he told his interrogators after the war, Speer had 
concluded that exploitation was inefficient. ''It would have been the 
supposition, he said, that the tariff was lifted from this large economic 
area and through this a mutual production was really achieved. For any 
deeply thinking individual, it is clear that the tariffs we have in western 
Europe are unbearable. So the possibility of production on a large scale 
only exists through this scheme.

There, in a nutshell, you have the dream of European economic union: get 
rid of the tariffs; create a gigantic single market; realise economies of 
scale. As Speer told Gitta Sereny towards the end of his life: When 
Bichelonne and I played with the idea of a European Economic Union, we 
thought of it as Utopian. But it wasn't all that Utopian, was it?

As it happens, the European Union that Hitler created was very far from 
Utopian. It was a nightmare, not only morally but also economically. All 
occupied countries had to pay Germany for the costs of their occupation. 
These costs had to be paid in Marks, but the German clearing bank, the 
Deutsche Verrechnungskasse, so grossly overvalued the Mark that the subject 
countries could never bridge the deficit. That meant tax had to go up at 
home; of France's total wartime public expenditure, 49 per cent was on 
payments to Germany.

The war taught Jean Monnet, and Jacques Delors, his much younger heir, how 
dreadfully France could suffer under untrammelled German economic 
dominance. But the Speer-Bichelonne deal suggested important institutional 
ways in which Germany could be tamed. That is why, after the war, Monnet 
and Schuman were so determined to build novel constitutional arrangements, 
and they created the European Coal and Steel Community, by which France and 
Germany completely ceded sovereignty over those two vital industries to a 
common European institution.

It did not matter to those visionary founders that their system was not 
democratic. Their memories and their imaginations were full of the war and 
the Hitlerian tyranny. One day Germany might grow great again, and there 
was only one long-term solution: to create one nation out of many. The only 
way to end nationalism, they decided, was to end nations and to create the 
beginnings of a European state.

It was a grand vision. Fifty years on, it is hopelessly out of date. In the 
1950s, the democratic objections naturally seemed trifling to Monnet, 
Schuman, de Gasperi,

Hello folks,

I am writing this from a Ruckus Society Tech Training gathering in
Northern California.  I thought I'd post some interesting information
I
have learned from various sessions here at camp.  Anyone who uses a
computer for email, (or for anything, really) will probably find
these
things very interesting...

Please read important #3 if that is all you have time for.

1. A very nice (sarcasm) company by the name of Booz-Allen is the # 9
company on the top 100 list of federal gov't contract recipients.
They
make most of their money from the defense department, like all the
top
ten gov't contract recipients.  Here's the important information:
They have developed a program named carnivore the gov't is
currently
using.  It is installed at major routing points in the net and at
major
Internet Service Providers computers. It watc hes all the
traffic in and out of a router or through an ISP.  In short, it
follows
people around the web and records where they go...especially if
they
go to certain target sites.  This is happening.  Files are being
created, all with the purpose of fighting terrorism.

2.  Booz-Allen is engaged in the creation of a program called Magic
Lantern. This program is designed to figure out people's passwords
so
the military can have access to *ALL* email accounts...for the
purpose
of fighting terrorism.  Magic Lantern insidiously will install
a virus on your computer so that when you next log in to your email
using a password, Magic Lantern sends a copy of the password to a
Military computer, and they can then access your email.  This is all
stuff I got to read in the Washington Technology (a magazine devoted
to
celebrating the newest technological contracts awarded on Capitol
Hill).
It was H IGHLY recomended to me that those of us that use our email
to
engage in social justice work be aware of these realities and change
our passwords VERY Frequently, making sure to include numbers in our
passwords.

3. Yahoogroups recently cut off the service of several antiwar and
pro-
palestinian list servs in the interest of national security.  All
the
archives, and especially ALL MEMBER INFORMATION for these groups was
transferred over to the FBI.  This is not a rumor or a joke.  Just
three weeks ago, yahoogroups also SOLD all of our emails to
spammers.
We should be getting list serv spam in the near future.  I was
advised
by the system administrator of riseup.net and resist.net and a system
administrator of tao.ca that we move our list serv over to an
activist
friendly server like theirs.  It is free, and they will always fight
any requests from the feds to access ou r membership list, or
archives.

I would like to very seriously suggest this.

I do not personally have a problem with the feds reading anything on
this list serv, but I do not like to think that we are using a
service
that has shut down other groups because of their anti-war content.

This camp has been highly informative about tech stuff.  It has also
opened
my eyes to how protected I am in the Midwest.  The bulk of
surveillance and federal harassment is happening on both coasts, in
San
Fran, Seattle and in DC and NY.  It shocked me to learn just how much
is happening, and
not only to the biggies in Direct Action like Ruckus.
I'd also like to suggest if anyone on the list has an email account
through a university, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. that you move it to a much
more secure location, like:

I keep my university account open for crappy stuff, and use my people-
link account for all personal, activist, or other private

President George Bushâs speech intensified the plight of the peace supporters in Israel, and in the entire Middle East. Since 1977, they were accustomed to American presidents playing the role of "fair mediators": pressuring Israel to restrain violence and to negotiate with its neighbors. Jimmy Carter mediated between Begin and Saadat, Ronald Reagan brought Israel and the PLO to a first ceasefire pact in 1981, and stopped Sharon before occupying Beirut in 1982. George Bush Senior coerced Shamir to the Madrid Peace Conference after the Gulf War, and Bill Clinton was best man to Rabin and Arafat. Then, and all of a sudden, comes a president that doesnât mediate and unilaterally supports Sharon. This is not only confusing to the Israeli "peace camp," but places the Palestinian leadership in an awkward position, and the rest of the Arab states as well. In March the Arab League accepted a brave peace plan, initiated by Saudi Arabia, and now the President Bush dismissed it off hand.

George Bush did not present a peace plan, but instead, in the subtext, we can understand who are his allies in his war plans. During the last half a year Bush stands at Sharonâs side and spurs him onwards on his aggressive policies. The obvious question is: Why did Bush quit playing the "fair mediator" between Israel and its neighbors? The explanation I suggest here is very simple: Bush is planning to launch an attack on Iraq, and in recent months he has come to the conclusion that, for the purpose of this war Sharon is a more reliable and worthwhile ally than the moderate Arab states. Bush doesnât care too much about peace between Israel and Palestine, nor is he all that bothered by the millions of Palestinians living under curfew in intolerable and inhuman conditions, and neither is he really concerned about the Israeli casualties caused by the despaired suicide bombers. "Let them bleed" was the Bush administrationâs motto early on in its reign, until it became politically incorrect on 9/11. And yet, as long as the Bush administration continues in its plans to attack Iraq, we, Palestinians and Israelis, will continue to bleed.

What makes so clear that Bush is mainly concerned by his plans of war? It is a matter of timing. In his speech Bush suggests the establishment of a Palestinian state within three years, focusing in the meantime on replacing Arafat and installing a new democratic, uncorrupted, transparent and efficient Palestinian administration during the coming year and a half. This means the Palestinian state will be established only AFTER the war against Iraq, if at all. Bush wants a strong and deterring Israel during the attack on Iraq, first of all because Sadam Hussein might bomb Tel-Aviv, as he did in 1991, and then Sharon will surely join the war. Second, because the "USâs enemies" throughout the Arab world might awaken during such a war. Israelâs job would then be to deter, and eventually fight, the USâs enemies within its "area of influence": the Occupied Territories, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.

How did this full understanding between Bush and Sharon crystallize? It developed smoothly since 9/11. Immediately after the attack on the Twin Towers Sharon tried to get on the "War-On-Terrorism" wagon, declaring that "Arafat is our Bin Laden." This position was firmly rejected by the US administration, mainly because they were planning an attack on Afghanistan, and did not want to endanger the expected cooperation with the pro-American Arab states. However, during the war in Afghanistan, the Bush Administration was disappointed with the positions of Saudi Arabia and Egypt. After the end of the war and the demolition of the Talibanâs regime, Sharon was invited to Washington "to coordinate the next moves in the war against terror", this time against Iraq. In his meeting with President Bush on December 3rd Sharon received a "green light" to attack Arafat. On December 4th, Arafatâs helicopters were bombed, and he was placed on a "city arrest" in Ramalla for five months. Even when Arafat declared a ceasefire on December 16th, the US ignored it, and when Israel breached the ceasefire by assassinating Raad Carmi on January 14th (to avoid the upcoming political negotiations), Bush continued to support Sharon. Since December 3rd the President of the USA has defined Israelâs actions against the Palestinians as "self defense," while Arafat is always found guilty. Sharon has systematically undermined Arafatâs authority in the eyes of the Palestinians, disbanded the forces that were loyal to his command, destroyed their infrastructure, and even sabotaged the Palestinian Authorityâs computers. Readers may like to know that my book, ACID - A New Secret History of LSD,

As I explained in the original version (Acid: the Secret History of LSD) in 
1997, my main intention was to draw attention to some key facets of the 
explosion in LSD use, especially in the 1969-77 period, which were glossed 
over at the time and had never really been looked at. The extraordinary 
career of Ronald Stark, a shadowy, American-born LSD manufacturer (and much 
more besides), looms large in this tale and the story of his career alone 
calls for a reassessment of the role secret intelligence agencies played and 
continue to play, in supposedly anti-drug smuggling activities aimed at 
protecting our 'security'.
With the new version, taking in new research and expanding the content by 
nearly a third of the orginal length, what has resulted is as much a cultural 
history as a 'crime story'.
I close with two short reviews of the book:

Lobster magazine (Summer 2002)
This is revised edition of the book which was reviewed in Lobster 35 (1998). 
I'm not sure how *new* it is. I no longer have the original edition but this 
seems pretty similar to it. What is new is some new material on the activites 
of Steve Abrams, one of the co-founders of SOMA, who had been an unwitting 
part of the CIA's MKUltra programme while a post-grad student at Oxford; and 
the section on the mysterious Ronald Stark, LSD enterpreneur and apparent 
American intelligence asset, has been elaborated. Most importantly, all the 
technical foul-ups which marred the first edition have gone. Vision were 
really crap when they started out (they completely wrecked my *Prawn Cocktail 
Party*, for example, scrambling the footnotes to four of the chapters; in 
those days Vision skipped the proof reading stage).
This however, is decently produced and a 'clean' read. The story of the drug 
culture of the sixties and seventies is important and entertaining and while 
it still leaves the loose ends loose - was the whole thing a CIA social 
experiment which ran amok? - this is the best account we have to date.

Review of ACID A New Secret History of LSD by David Black in Nexus magazine 
April-May 2002

The psychedelic drug LSD, or acid, has had a colourful and chequered 
history, not just through 1960s counterculture but in clandestine, 
CIA-sponsored operations. This latter area is what particularly occupies 
English author David Black in his investigation, Acid, first published in 
1998 and now expanded with new evidence in this revised edition. Looking 
back, we can understand how the summer of love could not have been 
sustained, despite its intellectual supporters with links to early 1960s 
university and volunteer-supported LSD experiments in the search of new 
mental health therapies. besides, too many people were unnecessarily hassled 
in crackdowns by the authorities.
Entrepeneurs with connections to organised crime, the Mafia, the Red Brigades 
as well as various international intelligence agencies were making a fortune 
out of the mid-1960s through 1970s LSD culture. One in particular was Ron 
Stark, the so-called Godfather of LSD who supposedly died in 1984, though 
Black looks at the evidence hinting that he may still be alive. But years 
before, as we know, the CIA and military were conducting secret LSD 
experiments in mind and behaviour control on human guinea pigs. The research 
was carried out under the umbrellaa of MK-Ultra, the black budget project 
that covered for countless sub-projects every bit as

Thirty-five years after Israeli air and naval forces attacked a lightly armed U.S. Navy spy ship during the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, the CIA director at the time and the legal counsel to the Navy's court of inquiry say the attack was deliberate.

"It was no accident," former CIA director Richard Helms said May 29, bucking that agency's June 13, 1967, report that indicated the incident could have been a mistake.

Retired Navy legal counsel Capt. Ward Boston says he and the court's president, the late Rear Adm. Isaac "Ike" Kidd, always believed Israeli forces knowingly attacked the Liberty.

"I feel the Israelis knew what they were doing. They knew they were shooting at a U.S. Navy ship," said Boston, who lives in Coronado, Calif. "That's the bottom line. I don't care how they tried to get out of it."

The attack killed 34 men and wounded 172 others, and sparked a long-running controversy: Did Israel knowingly try to sink the American ship or did it believe the ship was an Egyptian vessel?

Officially, the Navy exonerated Israel on June 18, 1967 - 10 days after the attack - when the Navy court of inquiry found that available evidence indicated the attack was a case of mistaken identity.

THE COURT OF INQUIRY

Boston said Kidd told him he believed the attack was deliberate and that the Israelis knew the ship was American.

That flies in the face of the findings of Kidd's court, and also what the author of a new book on the Liberty says Kidd told him in interviews in the early 1990s.

A. Jay Cristol, a federal judge in Florida and retired Navy aviator who also served in the service's Judge Advocate General's Corps, is the author of the upcoming "The Liberty Incident."

"Kidd told me an entirely different story," said Cristol, whose new book is dedicated to Kidd, who died in 1999.

Cristol said that during one interview with Kidd in December 1990, Kidd related that when he brought the court's report to then-Chief of Naval Operations Adm. David Lamar McDonald, the CNO asked him, "Ike, was it intentional?"

"Ike said, 'No, Admiral,'" Cristol recalled.

But Boston remembers that when Kidd returned from Washington, he said officials were not interested in hearing the truth.

"In military life, you accept the fact that if you're told to shut up, you shut up. We did what we were told," Boston said.

He explained that he is willing to talk now because "everyone else is shooting their mouth off."

Boston said he does not know whether his beliefs were shared by the other members of the court, Capts. Bert M. Atkinson Jr. and Bernard J. Lauff.

Lauff could not be located for comment. Atkinson died in 1999.

But Boston's statements do put him now in the camp of retired Adm. Merlin Staring, who as a captain and staff legal officer in London was initially told to review the court's report.

Staring said June 3 that the report was taken from him before he finished his review, but based on what he had seen, the evidence did not support the contention that the attack was an accident.

Staring concedes he still has not read the entire report. Staring, who went on to become the Navy's top JAG officer, is now part of a newly formed Liberty Alliance, which includes former CNO and Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Thomas Moorer and two Marine Medal of Honor recipients, Gen. Ray Davis and Col. Mitchell Paige.

The group wants a full congressional investigation into the attack and is lobbying military organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, hoping to garner support among their members, said Tito Howard, the group's executive director.

SURVIVORS ALLEGE CONSPIRACY

Many Liberty survivors and their supporters long have maintained that the attack was deliberate and that the Kidd report excluded testimony from crew members that would have shown that.

Boston recalled that testimony was taken from crew members who said the Israelis fired on life rafts when they were put into the water.

The court's report includes testimony indicating the shooting of the life rafts was incidental, occurring when the ship was strafed by Israeli jets.

Some allege Israel wanted the spy ship sunk to ensure it did not pick up communications showing Israel was planning to seize the Golan Heights from Syria. Others say it was to prevent Liberty from intercepting communications dealing with an alleged Israeli massacre of Egyptian POWs in the Sinai.

Some Liberty survivors and supporters claim the U.S. government covered up the incident to avoid a conflict with Israel that could have cost the Johnson administration support among Jewish voters and supporters. Subsequent administrations and Congresses have avoided a thorough airing of the incident for the same reasons, they say.

That's exactly what happened at Harken. A group of insiders, using money
borrowed from Harken itself, paid an exorbitant price for a Harken
subsidiary, Aloha Petroleum. That created a $10 million phantom profit, which

during Dick Cheney's tenure as chief executive. But for Harken's stock price
â and hence for Mr. Bush's personal wealth â this accounting trickery made
all the difference. Oh, and Harken's fake profits were several dozen times as
large as the Whitewater land deal â though only about one-seventh the cost of
the Whitewater investigation.  Mr. Bush was on the company's audit committee,
as well as on a special restructuring committee; back in 1994, another member
of both committees, E. Stuart Watson, assured reporters that he and Mr. Bush
were constantly made aware of the company's finances. If Mr. Bush didn't know
about the Aloha maneuver, he was a very negligent director.  In any case, Mr.
Bush certainly found out what his company had been up to when the Securities
and Exchange Commission ordered it to restate its earnings. So he can't

Thanks. It's not that I take his theories seriously, he just throws out

I never declared one way or the other; what are you inferring? Score

The main perk of being an editor on this list is being able to post

thanks for ignoring the questions asked.

and one of the points of my attack on bard is that using a derogatory word
(homo, nigger, yid, etc) *is* an attack. i can avoid his postings- but by
changing the subject of an article and replacing a neutral word with a
derogatory word i cannot ignore his attacks.

further- his postings (in this and other cases) are all about attacks on
individuals who disagree with his way of thinking. he is not arguing with
anyone- he is instigating attacks and prejudice.

 New York Lutheran Leader Suspended

 A high-ranking Lutheran pastor has been suspended from his duties and ordered
 to apologize to all Christians for participating with Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and
 Hindus in an interfaith prayer service in New York's Yankee Stadium after
 Sept. 11.

 Supporters of the Rev. David Benke say he will appeal his suspension as a
 district president -- the equivalent of a bishop -- in the Lutheran
 Church-Missouri Synod, which has 2.6 million members and is the 10th-largest
 church in the United States. If he does not apologize or appeal by July 10, he
 will automatically be removed from the Missouri Synod's clergy.

 The ruling against Benke illustrates the growing tension between two major
 trends in American religion: ecumenical or interfaith efforts, which have been
 bolstered by President Bush's calls for tolerance since the Sept. 11 terrorist
 attacks, and back-to-tradition or renewal movements, which have taken hold
 among Presbyterians, Episcopalians and Methodists as well as Lutherans.

 While the interfaith efforts emphasize common values, the renewal movements
 emphasize theological differences. Often, the two trends can coexist, as when
 religious conservatives of many faiths stand together in defense of the words
 under God in the Pledge of Allegiance. But sometimes they conflict,
 particularly over claims that only adherents of a particular creed will gain
 salvation and all others face eternal damnation.

 By President Benke's joining with other pagan clerics in an interfaith
 service [no matter what the intent might have been], a crystal clear signal
 was given to others at the event and to thousands more watching by C-Span. The
 signal was: While there may be differences as to how people worship or pray,
 in the end, all religions pray to the same God, the Rev. Wallace Schulz, the
 Missouri Synod's national second vice president, wrote in the suspension
 letter.

 To participate with pagans in an interfaith service and, additionally, to
 give the impression that there might be more than one God, is an extremely
 serious offense against the God of the Bible, Schulz added.

 Twenty-one Missouri Synod pastors and congregations filed charges against
 Benke because of his participation in the Sept. 23 Prayer for America. The
 televised service, hosted by Oprah Winfrey, brought together New York's
 Cardinal Edward M. Egan, other Christian ministers, Sikh and Hindu holy men,
 imams, rabbis and civic leaders.

 The charges against Benke included unionism -- mixing the beliefs of various
 Christian denominations -- as well as syncretism -- mixing Christian and
 non-Christian views. Both are forbidden by the 1847 constitution of the
 Missouri Synod, which is based in St. Louis and is the country's
 second-largest Lutheran group, after the 5.1-million-member Evangelical
 Lutheran Church in America.

 The principle is, you don't want to do anything that would compromise the
 gospel of Jesus Christ, said the Rev. David H. Mahsman, editor of the
 Missouri Synod's newspaper, the Lutheran Witness. The question is, does
 participating in an interfaith service after September 11th do that? Benke
 would say no. In fact, it honors Christ and shows that Lutherans are concerned
 about the well-being of the entire community. Others would say it placed
 Christ on an equal footing with Allah and Vishnu and whatever gods are
 involved.

 In February, after a bout of negative publicity over the charges, the synod's
 board of directors barred Benke, the complainants and all other parties to the
 dispute from talking about it. But Missouri Synod members, speaking on
 condition of anonymity, said the charges are viewed within the denomination as
 an attack not only on Benke but also on the synod's national president, the
 Rev. Gerald M. Kieschnick, a moderate who was elected last year.

 Before the gag order went into effect, Kieschnick told The Washington Post
 that he gave Benke permission to attend the interfaith service. He cited a
 decision by the synod at its July 2001 convention to allow pastors to
 participate in civic events as long as they are free to express their
 religious views.

 Formal accusations of syncretism have been filed against Kieschnick, too. But
 a church panel ruled that he answers

What's So Bad About Israel?

It's hard to say what's so bad about Israel, and its defenders--having
nothing better to use--have seized on this. Some do so soberly, like
Harpers publisher John R. MacArthur, who thinks Israel comes off no
worse than the Russians in Chechnya, and much better than the Americans
in Vietnam (Toronto Globe and Mail, May 13th, 2002). Others do so
defiantly. True, Israel has taken the land of harmless people, killed
innocent civilians, tortured prisoners, bulldozed houses, destroyed
crops, yada yada yada. Who cares? What else is new?

I completely sympathize with this point of view. The appetite for
world-class atrocity may be adolescent, but it belongs to an adolescence
that many of us never outgrow. The facts are disappointing. Even
compared with post-Nazi monsters like Pol Pot or Saddam Hussein, the
Israelis have killed very few people; their tortures and oppression are
boring. How could these mediocre crimes compete for our attention with
whatever else is on TV?

They couldn't; in fact they are designed not to do so. Yet Israel is a
growing evil whose end is not in sight. Its outlines have become clearer
as times have changed.

Until sometime after the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel's sins were
unspectacular, at least from a cynic's perspective. Israel was born from
an understandable desire of a persecuted people for security. Jews
immigrated to Palestine; acquired land by fair means or foul, provoked
violent reactions. There ensued a cycle of violence in which the Jews
distinguished themselves in at least one impeccably documented and truly
disgusting massacre at Deir Yassin, and probably many more that Jewish
forces succeeded in concealing. The new state accorded full rights only
to its Jewish inhabitants, and defeated its Arab opponents both in
battle and in a propaganda campaign that effectively concealed Israeli
racism and aggression. It was said then, as now: what's so bad about
that? The answer is, nothing. Of course the perpetrators of these crimes
deserve no state, but only punishment: what else is new? Isn't this the
normal way that states are born?

Israel's pre-1967 crimes, then, are not a part of its special evil,
though they did much to create it. The past was glorified, not
exorcised. Both Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir, indisputably
responsible for the worst pre-1967 brutalities, went on to become prime
minister: the poison of the early years is still working its way through
Middle East politics. But the big change, post-1967, was Israel's choice
of war over peace.

Sometime after 1967, Israel's existence became secure. It didn't seem so
during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, but soon it became clear that Israel
would never again be caught with its guard down. Its vigilance has
guaranteed, for the foreseeable future, that Arab nations pose no
serious threat. As the years pass, Israel's military advantage only
increases, to the point that no country in the world would care to
confront it. At the same time, and to an increasing extent, Palestinians
have abandoned any real hope of retaking pre-1967 Israeli territory, and
are willing to settle for the return of the occupied territories.

In this context, the Israeli settlement policy, quite apart from its
terrible effect on Palestinians, is outrageous for what it represents: a
careful, deliberate rejection of peace, and a

Since 9/11 much has been said and written about terrorists. Too much. We're told that terrorists hijacked four passenger aircraft. Terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center and severely damaged the Pentagon. Terrorists then released anthrax on an unsuspecting public.

An undeclared and unconstitutional war was then instigated. For the United States of America to go war, that war must be declared by Congress. This has not happened. Sure, technically, the politicians are saying that this is not a war. But what else do you call a massive engagement of armed forces using real bombs and inflicting real casualties? If this is not a war, then please return home all the Australian destroyers, aircraft, and defense force personnel. What are they doing in Iraq right now, anyway?

Even if it was a war, you Americans, I'm afraid to say, are proving to be woefully incompetent at even locating the enemy. Let's get real here. President George W. Bush pointed the finger of blame for the 9/11 attacks on the Al Quaeda network. He then sent in the armed forces to root out destroy that network. It has been more than six months since this war began, yet there has still been no sign of Bin Laden, the supposed leader, or any victory for the allies. In fact, we are subjected on an almost nightly basis to new "terrorist alerts" issued by the FBI. All of these supposed threats are from the Al Quaeda network. None of these alerts ever eventuate. Thank God for that.

So, based on this continuation of threats, we can assume that the Al Quaeda network is still operating at optimum level despite being the target of the entire might of the U.S. armed forces for six months. I don't think so! Have you American's lost so much faith in yourselves and your country that you believe this crap? Wake up!

Let's get to the heart of the issue. There is no terrorist threat. Well, not as we would be made to believe. The terrorists are not Al Quaeda. The real terrorists are those who perpetuate this state of insecurity and fear. They would have you believe that you are under threat, that you are powerless. They have conned you into thinking that you could become the victim of a terrorist act at any moment. They have succeeded.

How many Americans are looking forward to a rosy future and a serene retirement? How many of you have twinges of fear at airports and in skyscrapers? How do you feel when an unshaven Middle Eastern man walks into your restaurant? The terrorists have succeeded.

There is a very real threat to your future, but it is not what you have been led to believe. In the confusion of the past few months, how many have noticed what else is going on? Your retirement funds are bankrupt. The Bill of Rights has been eroded to the point of non-existence. Your grain harvests are falling dangerously. The U.S. debt is beyond the point of recovery. Massive unprecedented climactic events are wreaking havoc across the world. And, the United States has declared a new military exclusion zone - Antarctica. Hmmm.

The supposed War on Terror is a sham. Its sole purpose is to distract, terrorize, and ultimately subjugate the people of the United States of America. The rest of us will follow. Hey, the same tactics are working well in Australia, aided and abetted by our Prime Sycophant, John Howard. It is working well at keeping you too scared to look at the real issues. I'm not entirely certain what the big thing is, that THEY don't want us to know about. All I know is that is has to do with Antarctica and massive Earth changes. It is also no coincidence that every time I mention the approach of the theoretical Planet X, I draw more shit from the powers that be. Think about it.

You would think that a spy scandal such as was reported by FBI wiretap translator Sibel Edmonds would rate mile-high headlines. So far, however, the coverage of this story has been limited to the Washington Post and â¦ here. Edmonds claims that one of her fellow translators met with a government official of a foreign country even as the feds were tapping his phone conversations. Edmonds also avers that she was invited to join the foreign organization that was under surveillance, and, when she refused, her family was threatened. The Post still isn't naming the mysterious "Middle Eastern country" that seems to have penetrated the FBI's innermost secrets, but last week reporter James Grimaldi, who broke the story, had an item in his "Washington Hearsay" column that reveals some of the details of the ongoing cover-up:

"There may be various efforts to prompt Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) into jump-starting judicial hearings; congressional sources believe that's why some anonymous senator has placed a hold on a bill by Leahy and Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa). The bill would give FBI employees federal whistleblower protection.

I can think of a few other reasons for the hold. Although it's too late to silence Rowley, Senator Anonymous clearly doesn't want to hear what Ms. Edmonds has to say. Her position, in any case, is none too good:

"The law is meant to protect people such as FBI agent Colleen Rowley, who recently testified before Congress. Even under that bill, though, protection would be more tenuous for Sibel Edmonds, the latest whistleblower to be fired by the FBI."

That Ms. Edmonds has come forward, anyway, is a tribute to her patriotism â and a reproach to her superiors, whose motives are questionable at best. The "Homeland Security" legislation currently being rammed through Congress would jail whistleblowers like Edmonds, whose story, Grimaldi reports, has been confirmed in its essentials by the FBI. "But Edmonds was fired because she was 'disruptive,'" he writes with evident disgust, citing a floor speech by Leahy:

"It is not a good management practice for the FBI to fire the person who reports a security breach, while nothing happens to the person who allegedly committed the breach."

It depends, however, on what is being managed. If you're the head of a spy ring that has infiltrated the top echelons of US law enforcement, and you have the power to muzzle whistleblowers by firing them and then invoking the gods of "national security" to cover the whole thing up â I would call that pretty good management practice. It all depends on what side you're on.

Speaking of which: can anybody tell me what side the FBI is on? First veteran agent Colleen Rowley steps forward with charges that the high command deliberately obstructed the anti-terrorist effort, specifically blocking the apprehension of Zacarias Moussaoui â and now Edmonds, with an even more alarming story: a spy ring in the agency's most sensitive top secret division. A cabal that seems to enjoy immunity from whistleblowersâ¦.

Oh, there goes Raimondo again, off and running with another one of his wacko conspiracy theories â but then what about William Safire's story of how the terrorists knew the most closely guarded secrets of the White House? Writing in a September 13 New York Times column, "Inside the Bunker," Safire painted a harrowing portrait of our leaders caught completely off guard on 9/11, and forced to flee for their lives when it became apparent that the terrorists had somehow penetrated the security of their inner sanctum. According to Safire, a "high White House official" told him the following:

"A threatening message received by the Secret Service was relayed to the agents with the president that 'Air Force One is next.' According to the high official, American code words were used showing a knowledge of procedures that made the threat credible."

This was confirmed, says Safire, by Karl Rove, who told him Bush was going to return to Washington before the Secret Service "informed him that the threat contained language that was evidence that the terrorists had knowledge of his procedures and whereabouts." One can only agree with Safire's conclusion:

"That knowledge of code words and presidential whereabouts and possession of secret procedures indicates that the terrorists may have a mole in the White House â that, or informants in the Secret Service, F.B.I., F.A.A. or C.I.A."

Safire's story of the top-level penetration of the White House is one of the great unsolved mysteries of 9/11. How did the terrorists get the inside knowledge and the technology to deliver a threat directly to the Secret Service â and why would they reveal their capabilities in this way?

It was the USSR that established one of the most sophisticated special services in the world, which trained female spies to seduce men. There has been a book put out recently about sex spying. A girl named Vera narrated the story about KGB and how they recruited pretty girls, promising them that they would have all kinds of welfare imaginable, if they would agree to fulfil their civil duty and become sex agents. They were trying to deliver them from any shyness or shame, teaching them sex techniques, showing perverted pornographic videos. Girls were supposed to be able to execute any task. A lesbian orgy was one of practical classes, teachers would join that orgy too, the whole event was filmed and then the tape was discussed in detail by the whole group of participants.

âWe were told that we were soldiers and that our weapon was our bodies. When the training was finished, we became sexually sophisticated women, we were ready to sleep with any man, if there was such an order for that,â â Vera said.

The objects of sexual attack were examined thoroughly beforehand, it was requisite to learn their sexual preferences, in order not to miss anyone. The first contact with an object was supposed to be totally incidental, but it was all over with blackmail: they explained to a guy that he had no other way out, but to cooperate with the Soviet intelligence.

However, surprised happened sometimes too, like it was with the notorious case for seducing Indonesian President Ahmed Sukarno. He was known for his sexual passion. That is why KGB sent a group of young girls to him during his visit to Moscow. Those girls got acquainted with Ahmed Sukarno in a plane, under the disguise of air hostesses, then he invited them to his hotel room in Moscow and arranged a grand orgy. The orgy was filmed by two candid cameras that were fixed behind mirrors. It seemed that the operation was just perfect. Before starting the blackmail, KGB invited Sukarno in a small private movie theatre and showed him the pornographic video, in which he was playing the main part. KGB agents were expecting him to get really frightened, that he would agree to cooperate with them at once, but everything happened vice versa: Sukarno fondly decided that it was a gift from the Soviet government, so he asked for more copies to take them back to Indonesia and show them in movie theatres. Sukarno said to flabbergasted agents that the people of Indonesia would be very proud of him, if they could see him doing the nasty with Russian girls.

East-German intelligence progressed in the field of sex spying as well. They developed a plan for seducing lonely secretaries that worked in important state institutions of West Berlin. The first contact was supposed to happen on a bus stop, in a cafe, or during a lunch break. A guy would start making a conversation, and then there was a game of seduction. For example, a handsome, well-dressed man with a bouquet of flowers rings a bell of a lonely woman, and then he pretends that he knocked on a wrong door. He gallantly apologizes, gives her flowers, and the affair starts. Agents knew every little detail about those women before starting all those operations. However, a male sex spy was not supposed to look like a Hollywood actor, it would be suspicious that he evinced interest in an inexpressive woman. Male sex spies also had a course of education classes with seductive female teachers. It sometimes happened that an agent could fall in love with his object, and those two people could not be controlled any longer. The problem with lonely secretaries that worked in secret institutions of West Berlin was so serious that NATO authorities ordered to hang posters on the walls of their offices, telling them to keep their hearts closed.

Sometimes women were eager to fight themselves, especially even if their were gripped with patriotic feelings. More than a dozen of English soldiers were killed during the war in Northern Ireland â they were killed by pretty women, who met them in bars, offered them to have sex and killed them brutally in the end. The Irish used pretty girls for distracting soldiersâ attention at their posts or near police stations during army operations. The British were not sitting on their hands, they set up a sex squad in return too. The intelligence opened two brothels in Belfast for blackmailing the leaders of local political movements and for obtaining intelligence information. Those brothels were packed with best prostitutes from all over Europe - they executed the tasks of the English intelligence for very good money.

In the last few years, Lyndon LaRouche's star has started to shine again on the American and international political scene: he has started to receive much more frequent and intense attention than ever in American and international radio and television networks and on the Internet, mostly because virtually all of his economic and political predictions have turned out to be true after his many years of absence from the scene when he served time in jail on account of charges fabricated against him by Kissinger and his cabal in collusion with some highly-placed officials of the Department of Justice in a malicious attempt to silence him and prevent his voice from being heard by American and world public opinion. They obviously feared his infinite candor in expressing his opinions which started to spread like wildfire and which, had he been allowed to bring with him if elected President, would have threatened the interests of many an influential group of self-seeking plutocrats and Zionists who control the destinies of peoples by controlling the monetary-financial markets of the world. 

One of the more notable of Mr. LaRouche's traits is that he is the first American politician in our times who holds that American interests can be ensured only within the context of recognizing and equally ensuring the interests of humanity at large. He does not believe in war of any kind as a means of serving those interests. In his view, recourse to war should be had only as a last resort and for the sole purpose of establishing peace. On the other hand, he is of the opinion that the United States is currently on the verge of a far more horrendous economic collapse than that of the thirties of the last century and will take the world along with it to that baleful end, all on account of the foolish economic policies adopted since 1971, which have undermined the solid foundations on which the world economy had rested after the Second World War thanks to the enlightened economic policies formulated by Roosevelt and embraced by his successors. 

What has made things even worse is that the advocates of these foolish economic policies can find no way out of the catastrophe to which they will inevitably lead save by taking even more foolish measures which can be summed up as follows: (a) to unleash the clash of civilizations operation; (b) to instigate a bogus, endless war under the spurious slogan of a war against terrorism: (c) to seek, under another spurious slogan, namely that of "globalization", to impose the hegemony of the United States over the world through the establishment of a Roman-style empire protected by legions similar to the Waffen SS forces which the Nazis formed to protect the system they envisioned for the post-war world. 

Faced with this at once dismal and frightening situation, LaRouche, alone among American politicians of any weight, has a detailed program, based on firm scientific, economic and humanitarian grounds, to overcome this crisis and prevent the expected catastrophe. Among the features that stand out in his program are: (a) the promotion of cooperation, rather than conflict, among civilizations; (b) ensuring the development and well-being of all the peoples of the world through such far-reaching projects as the establishment of land-bridges or transportation corridors consisting of long-distance rail lines or high speed magnetic levitation systems linking Europe, Asia and Africa as well America, together with parallel water supply systems that would bring development and prosperity to the vast arid spaces along the way, to say nothing of power stations to supply energy for such areas. 

Another trait of Mr. LaRouche's that is of particular concern to us as Arabs and Muslims is to be found in the following facts: it is needless to say that no American politician dares utter a single word of criticism of Zionism or Israel, either because he/she is already bought by the Zionists or for fear of bringing on his/her head the wrath of the Zionists who need send out only one signal to label the culprit as anti-semite and wreck his/her political career for good. On the contrary, American politicians are quick to support and defend Israel however horrible its crimes, and they consider all those who resist Israeli occupation as terrorists. Not so LaRouche. 

Throughout his political career, he has been known for his opposition to Zionism and his explicit criticism of the criminal policies of Israel, especially under Sharon, as well as for his support of Palestinian rights, his refusal to accuse them of terrorism and his attacks on the so-called Christian Zionists. With their wonted ferocious slander-mongering, the Zionists have tried hard to label him with anti-semitism, but they have failed miserably because he has never in his life uttered a single word against Jews or Judaism

He was here for a while, but I think the volume freaked even him.  I
read his posts at alt.fan.rawilson

He's been a bit boring lately with the Heidi Klum obsession, though.
I usually ask him about the CLuM connections to various events.  I
have fun printing out some of his answers and tacking them up at local
grocery store notice boards.  Everybody needs a little mental
monkeywrenching now and then.

I know you have to sift through quite a bit of dross, but the
occasional nugget of divine madness is worth it.  Considering Saba,
one must realize that everyone is somehow prejudiced.  I guess I have

been temporarily suspended while the problem is under investigation.

As Americans celebrated the birth of our country on July 4th, the so-
called 20th hijacker Moussaoui was offering to provide documents and
information about the role played by the FBI and flight schools in
the terrorist plot to the Grand Jury and Congress.

Follow Hopsicker on a journey to find out the truth about Mohamed
Atta and and Rudi Dekkers, the suspicious Dutch national whose flight
school was the terrorist's American beachhead, and who has been
called the Trojan Horse in the September 11th attack.

In Hopsicker's words, Rudi Dekkers' flight school is the biggest
September 11th crime scene that wasn't reduced to rubble...But he has
somehow escaped serious scrutiny. We wanted to know if that was
because Dekkers is being `protected,' to shield secret government
operations from coming to light.

Dutch associate at the Venice Municipal Airport, Arne Kruithof. Is
