Persistent Drop in Fertility Reshapes Europe's Future

ERRARA, Italy  On a recent night at the Blue Elephant
recreation center here, a clutch of parents watched adoringly
as dozens of 3-and 4-year-olds sprinted through a colorful
playroom, bounced on the cushioned floor or doodled on drawing
pads, aglow with creative pride.

It was Italy as outsiders still imagine it: child-worshiping
and family-loving.

But there was something wrong with the picture. Most of the
parents were gazing at one, and only one, child.

That was true of Gianluca Valenti, who said that giving his
son any siblings would be too exhausting and expensive, and of
Barbara Lenzi, who said that more than one child doesn't seem
to make sense.

It was also true of Rosa Andolfi, who responded to a question
about having an additional child as if a vampire were near.

Basta! Ms. Andolfi more or less yelped, then made a cross
with her index fingers and thrust it forward.

That gesture was not just funny but telling; it touched on an
increasingly worrisome reality for Italy and other European
countries whose fertility rates have plummeted over the last
decades, shifting one-child families close to the statistical
norm.

In Spain and Sweden, Germany and Greece, the total fertility
rate  or the average number of children that a woman, based
on current indicators, is expected to give birth to  was 1.4
or lower last year, according to the World Health
Organization.

In no West European country did the rate reach 2.1  the
marker that, demographers say, means an exact replenishment of
the population. By contrast, the United States had a 2.0 rate,
which demographers attribute to greater immigration.

While that trend has been evident for many years, its slow-
building consequences are now coming into starker relief, as
more West European countries acknowledge and take new steps to
address the specter of sharply winnowed and less competitive
work forces, surfeits of retirees and pension systems that
will need to be cut back deeply.

In Italy, where the fertility rate last year was 1.2,
according to the health organization, Labor Minister Roberto
Maroni has announced that the cost of the state pension system
will need to be reduced. Mr. Maroni said the government would
offer incentives, which he did not  specify, to keep people at
work past the minimum retirement age of 57.

The United Nations recently published data suggesting that the
population of Spain could decline to about 31.3 million in
2050 from about 39.9 million now. According to the World
Health Organization, Spain's fertility rate last year was 1.1,
the lowest in Western Europe.

Many provinces in Italy's wealthy, well-educated north have
rates well below that.

The rate in the province of Ferrara, which includes the city
of Ferrara, has been under 0.9 for each of the years since
1986 that Italy's National Institute of Statistics kept track.

Ferrara officials talk about the dearth of young children in
the streets, the closing of elementary schools over the last
decade and a pervasive sense that something is missing.

There's a lack of energy, Deputy Mayor Tiziano Tagliani said
in a recent interview here. The society is colder without
children.

Nationwide, Italy's fertility rate has been so low for so long
 under 1.5 since 1984  that the country offers an especially
good glimpse into the dimensions and dynamics of the trend.

For example, Italy now has the world's oldest population. The
percentage of people 60 or older is 25, compared with 16
percent in the United States, according to the population
division of the United Nations.

The division's experts project that by 2050, if current trends
hold, 42 percent of Italy's population will be 60 or older.

Antonio Golini, a professor of demographics at the University
of Rome, Sapienza, said that would be unsustainable, from a
cultural and even psychological point of view.

That sense of alarm was reflected in Pope John Paul II's
first-ever address to the Italian Parliament in November. The
pope said the crisis of the birthrate in Italy was a grave
threat that bears upon the future of this country.

In Italy, as in other West European countries, the low
fertility rate is interwoven with an array of other issues 
immigration, for one. While many people and many politicians
in Europe would like to clamp down on the rising tide of new
arrivals over the last decade, they may be forced to
accept it, simply to fill jobs and maintain levels of
productivity.

Europe stands out as the continent with the lowest fertility
rates. The numbers are now starkest in East European countries
like Bulgaria, Latvia and Ukraine, each of which had a rate of
1.1 in 2001, according to the World Health Organization. (Its
figures sometimes differ slightly from those of individual
countries, but provide a yardstick.)

Warner couple, children fled violence on African farms

Hope for prosperity and safety prompted Frieda and Wessel
Steenkamp to immigrate to the United States in May 2001. But
as they observe their second New Year's in this country, there
will be no celebration.

By order of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the
couple, both in their early 30s, and their two young children
will be deported.

On Jan. 9, they will leave the home near Warner where they'd
hoped to build a future. They must return to South Africa.
Although most of the world's attention is focused elsewhere,
international news services report that South Africa's 40,000
white farmers - primarily Boer Afrikaners of Dutch descent -
are under siege.

From January 2001 to April 2002, more than 200 have died in
some 1,400 armed attacks on white-owned farms. In the previous
five years some 700 farmers were killed.

The end of apartheid in 1994 unleashed violent - and largely
unchecked - reverse discrimination, according to news reports
and the Steenkamps.

Many blacks insist the land was stolen from them generations
ago and they are bent on retaliation. Fear and hopelessness
impelled the couple's decision to leave the family farm near
the town of Brits.

My husband farmed with a gun on his body, says Frieda, whose
first language is Afrikaans.

She quit her job in a bank when hijackings on the road made a
flat tire or mechanical problems with a vehicle too risky. She
says women and children are raped by blacks with AIDS, who
have been told that will cure the disease.

So when she and her husband learned of an opportunity to work
in the United States, they took action.

A former countryman, Petras Botes, traveled to South Africa
regularly to recruit temporary workers for the American
agriculture industry. For $2,000 per person for work permits,
passports and airline tickets, he promised the chance to
recoup that and more.

Frieda says they borrowed the money from Wessel's father and
in May 2001, set off with their children, Wessel Jr., now 5,
and Hendrico, now 3.

My father-in-law said we had guts to take our kids and go to
take on the world, she says.

Arriving in Salina, Kan., in a group of 26, the Steenkamps and
the others discovered their benefactor mysteriously missing.
Botes and four relatives had been arrested on suspicion of
running an international alien ring using illegal visas, a
charge that he has denied.

Questions about their visas left the South Africans stranded,
unable to work. Motels extended credit, but made it clear that
payment would eventually be expected.

The Steenkamps and others pooled their money to buy food and
when that was gone, accepted help from the local food bank.

The public library gave us a barbecue, Frieda relates. The
way people reached out to us was amazing.

After two-and-a-half months, the INS advised the couple to
take their children and re-enter the country legally.

We went to Mexico, Frieda says. The food bank rented the
car and gave us money to make the trip.

They drove from Kansas, crossed the border to Mexico, turned
immediately around and re-entered the United States.

It sounds silly, but Tina Andrews, a South African living in
Aberdeen, explains it's no joke. Whatever (the INS) says,
we'll do.  Tell us how high to jump and we will.

It's a choice between a life of freedom and a life of fear.
The Steenkamps relinquished their visitor visas at the Mexican
border for parole status, which permitted them to seek
temporary employment here.

They learned of Andrews, whose Aberdeen-based Employment USA
works with the Labor Department to fill temporary jobs in this
country with South African workers.

While they waited for their needed paperwork, Andrews invited
Frieda, Wessel and their youngsters to stay with her family in
Aberdeen. Four adults and four children shared the house for
six weeks.

It was winter, snowing - and we're still friends, Andrews
says laughing.

The Steenkamps made other friends - joining the First Assembly
of God Church, attending Bible study and encouraging their
boys' involvement with the children's ministry.

They have become more than just part of the church family,
says the Rev. Gary Wileman. They're not people who just sit
in the pew. They've really entered into close friendships.

THERE HAS BEEN a lull recently in Palestinian attacks against Israelis; a
shooting attack that killed four in a West Bank settlement last week was
the first major incident in a month. But almost every day, Palestinian
civilians, including many children, are being killed by the Israeli army
and police. An 18-year-old high school student named Amran Abu Hamediye was
found beaten to death in the West Bank town of Hebron on Monday; family and
neighbors say he had been detained by Israeli forces a few minutes before.
On Sunday, an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed by troops in the town of
Tulkarm. The day before, a 9-year-old girl was killed as she played outside
her home in the Gaza Strip. At least four other Palestinian children under
the age of 16 were killed by Israeli fire in Gaza during the past month. In
one case, an 11-year-old girl was shot in the chest and killed as she
leaned out her bedroom window to watch the funeral of a teenage boy who had
been gunned down the previous day.

Israeli explanations of this grinding carnage long ago acquired a routine
quality. Youngsters are often accused of having thrown stones at troops; in
other cases, soldiers are said to have been responding to sniper fire in
the vicinity. Investigations are invariably said to be underway -- but
rarely are results reported. According to the Israeli human rights group
B'Tselem, only one Israeli soldier has been convicted of brutality since
the latest Palestinian uprising began 15 months ago. During that time, some
2,000 Palestinians have been killed, compared with 700 Israelis.

Israeli officials point out that their forces, unlike the Palestinian
suicide bombers, do not deliberately set out to kill children and other
civilians. That is mostly true; but reports of calculated brutality by
soldiers have been growing ever since the army reoccupied the West Bank six
months ago. In Hebron, where Palestinian terrorists ambushed and killed a
dozen Israeli soldiers and security guards on Nov. 15, Israeli paramilitary
forces have reportedly been operating something they call the lottery, in
which they detain Palestinians and order them to choose from pieces of
paper labeled with punishments such as broken leg and smashed head. The
practice was reported by an Israeli newspaper on Dec. 22, more than a week
before Amran Abu Hamediye was beaten to death. But Israeli authorities as
yet have taken no action in response to the reports.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ordered the reoccupation of Palestinian
towns and territory, and the destruction of most of the security
infrastructure of the Palestinian Authority, after Israeli forces failed to
stop waves of suicide bombers from assaulting Israel. Now running for
reelection, Mr. Sharon is claiming success: Suicide bombings are less
frequent, and beleaguered Palestinian militants are discussing the
possibility of declaring an end to attacks inside Israel. Mr. Sharon
recently promised that his tactics would lead to victory over the
Palestinians. But he and his army cannot give Israelis real security in
this way, only a relative respite -- and at a high cost in Palestinian
lives.

ABU DHABI  Bahrain's newly-elected parliament has appointed
a committee to investigate  New Year riots in Manama in which up
to 2,000 young men attacked foreigners in the entertainment
district of the capital.

Officials said the riots were planned and those accused of helping
organize them include Saudi nationals. Officials said 45 people were
arrested and four of them have been released.

What happened was deliberately aimed at causing chaos and harm
to the security and stability which the country enjoys, Bahraini
Interior Minister Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa said on Thursday.
They were aiming to corrupt and distort the historic achievements
of the kingdom.

The panel will also oversee the kingdom's military and defense
establishment, Middle East Newsline reported.

Parliamentarians elected Ahmed Bahzad as chairman of the new
Foreign Affairs, Defense and National Economy Committee. The
panel is meant to oversee such bodies as the military, Defense
Ministry and Foreign Ministry.

The committee will also have a vice chairman. He was identified as
Mohammed Al Abbas.

Arab diplomatic sources said they do not expect the new
parliamentary committee to have much influence on Bahrain's
defense policy, including the significant U.S. military presence. The
sources said defense and military issues will remain the exclusive
domain of King Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabber Al Thani.

Members of the Foreign Affairs, Defense and National Economy
Committee were not elected. Instead, they were appointed by a
panel that consisted of the speaker of parliament, his two deputies
and the general secretary.

Members of five other committees were also appointed by the
panel.

Last year, Bahrain elected its first parliament in nearly 30 years.
Many of the deputies have appeared uncertain over the powers and
procedures of the institution.

The 40-member parliament is composed entirely of males. Islamic
fundamentalist movements dominate the body.

JPMorgan Chase announces settlement
of surety case with 10 out of 11 insurers

Thursday January 2, 2003

NEW YORK(BUSINESS WIRE)--J.P. Morgan Chase  Co.
announced today that it has settled its dispute with 10 of
the 11 insurance companies regarding the surety contracts
issued by those companies that guaranteed obligations of
Enron Corp. to JPMorgan Chase under prepaid commodity
forward contracts.

Under the agreement, the insurance companies will pay
approximately 60 percent of the amount of the surety bonds
they wrote. A conference call has been scheduled for 1 p.m.
today to discuss the financial implications of this settlement,
as well as the amount of any additional reserves that the
firm may establish for costs associated with the various
private litigation and regulatory inquiries involving Enron
and the other legal actions, proceedings, and investigations
with which it is involved.

Prosecutors Enlist in Drug Czar's Anti-Marijuana Campaign --
Will Prioritize Marijuana Cases, Lobby Against Reform

The drug czar's Office of National Drug Control Policy
(http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov) has teamed up with the
National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) as part of its
escalating war on marijuana.  In letters sent to every prosecutor
in the country on November 1, NDAA president Dan Alsobrooks and
the drug czar's Deputy Director for State and Local Affairs, Scott
Burns, hoisted the battle flag against pot, signaling prosecutors
that they should make the prosecution of marijuana crimes a high
priority and urging them to fight efforts to reform the drug laws.

But for a group representing prosecutors, who have long fended off
criticisms of drug prosecutions on the grounds that we don't make
the laws, we merely enforce them, the push against marijuana
brushes right up against the line separating law enforcement from
lobbying.  While Alsobrooks, in his cover letter, attempted to
portray the push as a matter of public safety, he also made it
clear that the effort was inspired by attempts to reform the
marijuana laws.  Attempts to legalize or criminalize controlled
substances, and particularly marijuana, are springing up around
the country, Alsobrooks warned.  Those who support drug
legalization are well funded and highly adept at manipulating the
media.  And they do not mind deceiving the American public as
well... Those who want to legalize drugs advance their position
issue-by-issue, winning incremental victories.  We can, and have
stopped their efforts at the national level, but will lose all if
the states yield individually.  Writing that the drug czar's
office had asked NDAA to aid in its battle against marijuana,
Alsobrooks urged prosecutors to read Burns' letter containing
important information about marijuana and to consider ways that
you can bring this message to your communities.

But if prosecutors have any interest in accurate information about
marijuana, they will shy away from Burns' rhetoric.  The tenor of
Burns' letter is evident early on, when he tells prosecutors that
nationwide, no drug matches the threat posed by marijuana.  He
then listed a bunch of truths for prosecutors to tell the
American people about cannabis, but those truths are, at best,
highly controversial and, at worst, mendacious and tendentious.

The truth is that marijuana is not harmless, Burns wrote, citing
DAWN data showing marijuana mentions in hospital emergency rooms.
Marijuana now surpasses heroin as a factor in emergency room
visits, he claimed.  Burns did not explain that an emergency room
mention of marijuana does not signify a marijuana-related
medical emergency, or that marijuana overdoses are a practical
impossibility.

The truth is that marijuana is addictive, Burns wrote, claiming
that 62% of all dependent drug users are hooked on pot.  But
experts disagree.  In his new overview of marijuana research,
Understanding Marijuana, Dr. Mitchell Earlywine writes: Despite
its popularity, few people smoke marijuana regularly... diagnoses
[of addiction or dependence] may say more about the culture and
values of a given clinician than the actual negative consequences
that cannabis creates.

The truth is that marijuana and violence are linked, Burns
claimed, citing two studies that fly in the face of both decades
of folk wisdom and the rest of the scientific literature.  On this
topic, Earlywine writes:  Direct links between cannabis
intoxication and violence do not appear in the general population.
A few studies show correlations between marijuana consumption and
violent acts, but these links frequently stem from personality
characteristics or the influence of other drugs.  People who are
violent or who use drugs that lead to violence often also smoke
marijuana, but the marijuana does not appear to cause the
violence.

The truth is that we aren't imprisoning individuals for just
'smoking a joint,' Burns wrote, noting that only half of one
percent of prisoners are doing time for marijuana possession.
While few responsible critics of drug policy make that argument,
that is still roughly 10,000 people doing hard time.  Burns also
ignores the serious consequences awaiting the 700,000 people
arrested each year on marijuana charges, from jail time to lost
benefits to lost licenses to financial hardship.

The truth is that marijuana is a gateway drug, Burns wrote,
ignoring study after study that debunks this prohibitionist tenet.
Two of the most recent studies to debunk the gateway theory are a
February 2001 study by Dr. Andrew Golub published in the American
Journal of Public Health that called it a historical artifact
with no explanatory value

  I'll be the first to admit that I know very little about world financial 
  affairs or economics. I don't know much about NESARA either. But let me just 
  say that I know all I 'need to know' to realize beyond the shadow of a doubt, 
  that NESARA is a scam being perpetrated upon an unsuspecting public, 
  particularly those of the New Age persuasion. The NESARA program sure sounds 
  good, but in my opinion, it's one of those things that are just 'too good to 
  be true'. 
  Because I DO know a lot about disinformation, government propaganda 
  campaigns, psychological operations and mind control. My direct knowledge 
  comes from the fact that I was trained and groomed by CIA to be (among other 
  things) a media representative (read propagandist) for the NWO via the 
  so-called New Age. Fortunately I was able to break out of their operations 
  before they could get any real returns on their considerable investment in me, 
  which over a period of some forty-odd years, amounted to millions of dollars. 
  It costs a lot of money to train a high-level operative, especially to create 
  what they consider the 'perfect spy'. 
  Even back in the days when I served as a mouthpiece for the NWO, via radio 
  and TV shows which I produced and hosted in Greenwich CT, all sponsored by CIA 
  through front companies and cut outs, I never believed in any of the New Age 
  ideology which they were utilizing me to disseminate. Having been well trained 
  in REAL metaphysics, and having been blessed by God with gifts of the spirit, 
  I had no trouble seeing through the various religious, spiritual and political 
  indoctrination systems. 
  I was simply used as a 'talent'; just someone who could look and sound good 
  interviewing the New Age gurus, channelers, ideologues and other misguided and 
  programmed individuals who spewed out the propaganda which was designed mainly 
  to lull the public into a false sense of security and complaceny. Many of the 
  New Age cults and organizations were created and funded by CIA, along with 
  notorious organizations such as Scientology; Esalen; the Tavistock Institute 
  and many more too numerous to mention. 
  One way or another, the purpose behind the New Age propaganda is mind 
  control, pure and simple. Encouraging people believe such hogwash as: 
  We are all one.. We create our own reality..We attract only what we 
  'put out' ... We will all ascend into 'the fifth dimension' so we need not 
  worry about what's happening down here on earth. And perhaps the most 
  insidious and damaging New Age lie of all: There are no victims. This lie 
  conveniently allows the perpetrators of atrocities to actually BLAME their 
  victims for all the damages done to them, while they get off scot-free and 
  continue their crimes against humanity with impunity.

  News, which began around Thanksgiving and have continued apace ever since, are

A few things came to mind when reading your references to the CIA's 
involvement and the FBI's thwarting of key investigations.  I believe 
the inclusion of certain testimony (one of which I believe you 
alluded to) of two more people might help make your case for 
government complicity.  Michael Springmann and Robert Wright offered 
some very good testimony in the wake of the 9-11 investigation.

Springmann, a former employee of the Visa Express program at the 
CIA's consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, gave a speech at the June 
10, 2002 press conference of UnansweredQuestions.org, in which he 
chronicled the CIA's recruitment of terrorists for training within 
the United States.

The following are experts from his speech:

...I used to be in charge of the Visa Section at the CIA's consulate 
at Jeddah, the principle city of the Hejahs in Western Saudi Arabia. 
There, for a year and a half, I issued visas to terrorists recruited 
by the CIA and its asset, Osama Bin Laden. At the time I thought it 
was basically visa fraud. Somebody was paying $2500 bribes to State 
Department officials. I was ordered by these same high State 
Department officials to issue the visas, to shut up, to do my job and 
ask no questions.

I tried mightily for several years to find out what had happened to 
me, and the Freedom of Information Act requests were being 
stonewalled on the basis of national security, I ran across a 
journalist, Joe Trento. And about the same time I ran across two 
people, one of who was a government official and the other was a 
person attached to a local university here in Washington. All three 
confirmed that what I was protesting was not visa fraud but people 
being rounded up by the agency and Osama Bin Laden to come to the 
United Sates for training as terrorists to be sent to fight in the 
war against the then Soviet Union in Afghanistan. They used roughly a 
million dollars in liquor sales a year from the consulate in Jeddah 
to fund this. And you might ask, well, as the Washington Legal Times 
did, that was then, this is now, fifteen years later. Well, from what 
I read in the Los Angeles Times, fifteen of the nineteen people who 
allegedly flew airplanes into buildings in the United States got 
their visas from the same CIA consulate at Jeddah.

the judge, however, the methods by which the hijackers were allowed 
to slip into the United States should not be overlooked.  Either way

1) Question of the night: On CNBC Andrea Mitchell characterized
Bill Clinton as the avatar of fiscal discipline. She asked just-
announced Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards: Do you
think we need to return to the fiscal discipline that Bill Clinton
espoused?

2) John Edwards earned glowing assessments. He's young, smart,
Southern, a self-made millionaire trial lawyer, gushed Matt Lauer
on Thursday's Today. ABC anchor Elizabeth Vargas highlighted how
Edwards made his name convincing juries to give enormous awards
to people who suffered terrible injuries. He won his clients more
than $150 million before joining the Senate four years ago. And
insurance companies were terrified of him. He now says he wants to
fight for working people. George Stephanopoulos relayed how
colleagues consider Edwards to be whip smart.

3) ABC, CBS, CNBC and NBC on Thursday night all gave credence to
the assumption that Bush's tax cuts unfairly benefit the wealthy,
but none noted how the top ten percent of taxpayers pay 67 percent
of income taxes collected while the bottom 50 percent pay a
piddling four percent. ABC anchor Elizabeth Vargas worried:
President Bush will roll out more tax cuts, but will they benefit
everyone? CBS's Bill Plante reported that Bush's plan will lower
the very top tax rate despite the criticism that that will
disproportionately benefit the wealthiest taxpayers. NBC's Tom
Brokaw stated that Bush insisted his plan will help all Americans
-- not just the wealthy.

4) Poll: Americans Wary of Tax Cuts, War. So announced AP's
headline over a story run in many papers on December 31, but the
story was based on a skewed poll question: Is it more important
to pass additional tax cuts to stimulate the economy now or to
hold off on tax cuts so the budget does not go into a deeper
deficit?

5) A winter holiday blast at President Bush's conservative
policies by CNN's Bruce Morton. In a taped piece for the January 1
Inside Politics, Morton stated, as if beyond dispute, that Bush's
big tax cuts are tilted toward the rich. Morton also asserted
that Bush would let coal plants pollute the air more.

6) More press coverage for the MRC's Best Notable Quotables of
2002: The Fifteenth Annual Awards for the Year's Worst Reporting.
National Review Online on Thursday featured a piece about it while
the Washington Times and Insight magazine reported the results and
Atlanta-based radio talk show host Neal Boortz offered a plug.

Filling in for Alan Murray on Thursday night as host of CNBC's
9pm EST (and re-run three hours later) Capital Report, NBC News
correspondent Andrea Mitchell asked just-announced Democratic
presidential candidate John Edwards:
What is your view on deficit spending at this time given the
softness of the economy. Do you think that some deficit spending
is a good idea or do you think we need to return to the fiscal
discipline that Bill Clinton espoused?
Edwards began his reply: I strongly believe in fiscal
discipline...

Espoused maybe, but certainly didn't pursue as a Republican-
controlled House guided rising spending which grew slower than
Clinton wished as soaring revenues poured in.

2. Overview
The Germans are their own worst enemy.
Tacitus

The cornerstone for July 20, 1944 and for all the acts associated with it was
laid the day that 'leading' persons realized that Hitler would become
Chancellor of the Reich.

These gentlemen would dearly have liked to prevent his 'seizure of power' by
'lawful' means, but no matter how they racked their brains - it could not be
done, for all suggestions to the point foundered not only on the wording of
the Constitution itself, but also on Hindenburg's loyalty to this
Constitution and most of all on the mood prevailing among the people.

Hitler had achieved what he had resolved on as private first class, and had
sworn to in the Leipzig Supreme Court: he had gained the leadership of his
people - legally, albeit in the opinion of his enemies only because his
electors were not nearly as smart as they.1 It did not signify to them that
in April 1932, at a time when the legality of the elections could not yet be
disputed, these 'ignorant' Germans already numbered 13 million, and many
millions more only one year later. While they do question the legality of the
elections after the seizure of power, no reasonable and truth-loving person
can dispute that propaganda or illusory victories or 'compulsion' did in fact
add so many more 'ignorants' to the ranks of Hitler's adherents that the
Enabling Act, and hence all measures to amend the Constitution, had a
completely lawful foundation.

One can also doubt neither the legitimacy of the Saar plebiscite, conducted
as it was under international control, nor the enthusiastic approval voiced
by the vast majority of the people at public proclamations.2 It is curious
that with respect to major political decisions, which he could easily have
implemented on his own, Hitler the dictator bothered time and again to have
the legitimacy of these decisions affirmed by the people through plebiscites,
either before or at least after the fact.

In defense of their meek attitudes towards the methods employed by Hitler
after his seizure of power, the opponents now plead the terrorist measures3
that awaited them, had they done otherwise, but they keep silent about the
real reason, which is that in light of the clear wish of the people to give
Hitler a chance and to help him, they could not have dared offer any
practical resistance if they did not want to risk making fools of themselves
or being swept away by their own followers. This was also the reason for the
stance taken by the Social Democrats in the vote on the Enabling Act.4 Today,
in light of the fact that the SPD refers so persistently to its attitude of
1933, it is necessary to make this point quite clear. This party could vote
against the Act, and had to do so for fundamental reasons of principle, but
in light of the mood of the people it did not dare to thwart the bill's being
passed into law simply by absenting itself from the debate, as it might have
done and which would have been much easier.

gets this kind of enthusiasm
from his voters?!
No-one could have the slightest doubt that Hitler's government fulfilled the
true criteria of democracy in Germany for the first time, namely that the
people let themselves be governed by their own, their elected leader, in
other words, they 'governed themselves'. And nowadays no-one would be happier
than Chancellor Adenauer if he had something even approaching a fraction of
such a majority backing his General and EVG Agreements, instead of the bare
and reserved majority of the Bundestag which is utterly devoid of the
legitimacy that is bestowed by a clear and definite plebiscite. No doubt he
would also be happy to have his Bundestag made fun of as a 'choral society'
instead of having to desperately repeat Ladies and gentlemen! 165 times
like a prayer wheel in order to win the Members of Parliament over to his
propositions through prophecies of doom and gloom - not to mention the fact
that he has to put up with the impertinence of constant interruptions from
the floor. The people as well would prefer a 'choral society' that at least
knew which hymn to sing, and which would see a reason for singing such a hymn
in the unity of its national bearing. No doubt the people would be happier if
they had less of a 'say', yet the little they really wanted to say counted
for something. The matter of the German contribution to NATO defense forces
is perhaps the clearest proof of that.5

  TOMBSTONE, 2003

 When you hear the word, tombstone, what comes to
your mind?

 Do you think of a granite slab in a cemetery?  You're
obviously old.  Besides, there aren't many tombstones any
more.  There are horizontal plaques buried in the ground.
That's because of motorized lawn mowers.  A motorized lawn
mower with wide blades can't cut grass immediately around a
tombstone.  They can drive over plaques.  Tombstones are
high-maintenance memorials.  The economics of lawn
maintenance has cut down tombstones.

 Then there are those full-page ads in the WALL STREET
JOURNAL.  We don't see them as much any more.  Back when
there were no negotiated fees for stock purchases, the
large brokerage firms had an oligopoly.  A firm would run a
large ad in small print for a new corporate bond issue or
other investment.  No one was expected to read the ad, any
more than anyone is expected to read a prospectus.  The
tombstone ad and the prospectus are not there to protect
the investors.  They are there to protect the Securities
and Exchange Commission and the issuing brokerage firm,
who, after the investment turns into Global Crossing II,
can say, We revealed that risk up front, so it's not our
fault.  Of course, now that the SEC has been called on the
carpet for the huge bankruptcies of 2002, it has stepped up
the reporting requirements, to make the prospectuses even
longer and less likely to be read.

 Today, the old oligopoly barely functions, so the
large firms -- under heavy price competition -- have found
less expensive ways to meet SEC requirements.  The
economics of advertising has cut down the number of
tombstone ads in newspapers.  Today, we are asked to read
far fatter booklets, which we never do, instead of large,
fine-print ads, which we never did.

 But some of us, when we hear the word tombstone,
immediately think of a small-town business establishment in
the equestrian trade.  I mean, of course, the OK Corral.
That's the tombstone I want to talk about today.


BRAVE, COURAGEOUS, AND BOLD

 I think it was in 1954 that my neighbor, Captain
Billy, handed me a copy of Stewart Lake's WYATT EARP,
FRONTIER MARSHAL.  I read it, and I was hooked.  I was
probably 12 years old.  Lake's book had been written in
1931, two years after Earp died.  It reinforced the Earp
legend, which has continued to grow.  Movies on Earp have
been continual ever since, culminating in 1994: Tombstone
and Wyatt Earp, both of which were reasonably accurate,
unlike all of the others, and one of which made money:
Tombstone.

 In 1955, Hugh O'Brian starred in a TV series, The
Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, which became a hit and
survived for over 200 shows.  It didn't go into syndication
after 1960, so we don't see it on cable.  It was
sensationally popular.  Lake got what every author wants: a
bonanza a quarter century after his book is published.
Lake legally licensed everything with Wyatt Earp's name on
it: lunch boxes, toy guns, the works.

 Side note: O'Brian decided to go the whole nine
 yards (the length of a .50 caliber machine-gun
 ammo belt in World War II) with his new TV
 persona.  He took up fast-draw shooting.  I can
 recall, 40 years later, a story about his skill.
 He could draw and fire in four-tenths of a
 second.  As a graduate of Col. Jeff Cooper's
 combat handgunning course, let me tell you,
 that's fast.  O'Brian issued a challenge to any
 cowboy movie actor to beat him in a

Hi there,

In the very early 90s I had just taken over NEXUS and was engaged in
changing much of its contents, when I received a phone call from the new
Australian office of the Raelians.  They described their organisation etc
to me, and wondered if I would like to review one or more of their three
books.

I said that I was interested and that I would read their books and make a
decision on whether to review them or not.

They sent over their three books, and I read them, and decided NOT to
review them.  My decision was based upon my policy of NOT doing negative
reviews of books.  (I consider there are plenty of books out there that I
can say positive things about, and thus would prefer to only publish
supportive mentions of the work of others).

A couple  of weeks later, the head man in the Raelian office phoned me,
asking if I was going to review one or more of the three books.  I said
no.  He asked why, and I told him that we do not publish negative
reviews.  He asked why I did not like the books, and here is what I said
that I observed by reading them:

1)  One of the central tenets of the Raelian books, was that we  humans
are the 'property' of an alien race  called the Elohim.  Further, we are
THEIR 'lab experiment' gone astray, and that they are returning to 'fix'
up the situation.

2)  Another tenet I disliked intensely, was the idea that humans do not
have a soul or spirit.  Instead, all our feelings and spiritual
experiences are merely caused by chemicals in our blood etc.

3)  The Raelians also advocated a New World Order, run by a New World
Government, and maintained  order via a New World Army.

Rael came to Sydney a few weeks later, and the Australian national radio
broadcaster, ABC Radio National had him on chat show, along with myself,
the popular radio host (Philip Adams) and some religious academic from
Sydney University.  Unfortunately for Rael, all parties were mildly
hostile to one or more of their 'teachings'.

My other observations of the Raelian are:

1)  They change their writings and logos so that they can entice as many
people as possible.  Their original logo was the Swastika inside the Star
of David.  Ater outrage from the Jewish community they changed it.  They
also recalled and changed some of their book contents, and recent
devotees thus have no idea of the original propaganda.

2)  They use open and uninhibited sex as bait to attract more followers,
who are then asked to donate a percentage of their income to the
organisation.

3)  They professed to be interested in free energy research, but when we
asked Rael about what he thought of Nikola Tesla, Rael had never heard of
him.

4)  Rael and his followers believe that the Elohim are returning in the
next few years or so, and that their mission is to build a temple right
in Jerusalem to host their return.  (I guess they'll have to get in the
queue).

5)  When it comes to the Raeliians I am VERY suspicious of who exactly
runs the show, and what their hidden agendas are.  Their willingness to
change what should remain central tenets just to accomodate more
followers indicates total hypocrisy to their own 'cause'.  (Not that I
agreed with said central tenets anyway).

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

The story from CBSMarketWatch about J.P. Morgan
Chase that is appended here is especially interesting
for its last three paragraphs, wherein the company
denies any liability in regard to gold -- any real
exposure, to quote the company's chairman exactly.
The chairman insists that he doesn't know where the
Morgan/gold rumor comes from, and the company's
lawyer even says the company has asked the Securities
and Exchange Commission to investigate its origin.

As of this hour, GATA has not been contacted by
the SEC about the Morgan/gold rumor, but we can't
speak for the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the
Currency, where Morgan's hugely disproportionate
position in gold derivatives long has been a matter
of public record.

Of course if Morgan's gold position is really just
a front for surreptitious market intervention by the
U.S. government, and the liability of that position
actually rests with the government, Morgan's chairman
could be telling the truth, if only a half truth.

The whole truth might be the end of the gold price
suppression scheme.

Maybe CBSMarketWatch or some other news organization
will try to clarify this.

Morgan adds up Enron, other costs;

NEW YORK -- J.P. Morgan made its financial New Year's
resolution Thursday, setting aside more than $1 billion
to cover its settlement with insurers in an Enron-related
suit and beefing up its kitty for future litigation and
regulatory expenses.

The move will likely lead to a fourth-quarter loss at the
nation's second-largest bank, but it is expected to help
calm jittery investors and further strengthen the company's
ability to maintain its oft-criticized dividend policy and
attract more investors.

J.P. Morgan Chase looks likely to post a loss in the fourth
quarter after taking a charge to settle Enron litigation and
establishing a $900 million reserve to cover future litigation
and regulatory expenses, the company said Thursday.

The current Thomson First Call estimate for the quarter is
a profit of 36 cents per share, excluding special items.

You shouldn't expect to have positive earnings for the
quarter, Chief Financial Officer Dina Dublon told analysts
on an afternoon conference call.

Analyst Richard Bove of Hoefer  Arnett said he now
expects the bank to report a profit of 30 cents per share
before charges for the fourth quarter but a loss of 13 cents
after charges.

The powerhouse financial institution said it will take a
pretax charge of about $400 million and also revealed plans
for the $900 million pretax reserve. On an after-tax basis,
these items equal $860 million.

Excluding these items, fourth-quarter results are seen
in the range of consensus, Dublon said.

Bove said operating earnings for the first quarter of 2003
are expected to jump back to 50 cents per share and to hit
65 cents by the fourth quarter of next year.

People don't care what happened in [2002's] fourth quarter,
Bove said. They care where the company is going in
coming months. The expectation is that EPS will be
substantially higher.

This means that J.P. Morgan's dividend is well-protected,
he added. Based on Tuesday's closing price, the stock's
dividend works out to a yield of 5.75 percent.

New Drug Reduces Effects of MS, 
Crohn's Immune System Targeting Improved

A new type of experimental drug appears promising for treating two 
devastating illnesses caused by the immune system attacking parts of the body -- 
multiple sclerosis and Crohn's disease.
The drug, called Antegren, significantly reduced the number of new brain 
lesions and relapses in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS), and 
improved the conditions of patients suffering from Crohn's, an intestinal 
disease, according to two studies published together today.
The findings suggest that a new strategy for controlling the immune system, 
designed to be more targeted than existing approaches, could provide a better 
means of treating so-called autoimmune diseases such as MS, Crohn's and 
rheumatoid arthritis.
"It's very exciting," said Lars Ekman, president of research and development 
for Elan Pharmaceuticals of Dublin, Ireland, which is developing Antegren with 
Biogen Inc. of Cambridge, Mass. "It's one of the first times a molecule with a 
new mechanism of action shows efficacy in two apparently very different 
diseases. It's a new treatment paradigm for autoimmune diseases."
The drug has also shown promise in a small, still unpublished study for 
treating ulcerative colitis, another autoimmune disease, Ekman said.
Autoimmune diseases are a class of illnesses in which the immune system 
attacks the body for reasons that remain unclear. In MS, which afflicts an 
estimated 400,000 Americans, the immune system attacks the coating around nerve 
cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing an often progressive, crippling loss 
of motor control. In Crohn's, the immune system attacks cells lining the 
intestines, and causes severe abdominal pain, fever, ulcers and other problems 
that can become disabling. As many as 1 million Americans suffer from Crohn's or 
ulcerative colitis.
Although there are a handful of treatments for the diseases, none are very 
effective and all can have side effects.
Antegren, also known as natalizumab, is a laboratory-produced protein called 
a monoclonal antibody. It is the first of a new class of compounds known as 
selective adhesion molecule (SAM) inhibitors because they are designed to 
inhibit the ability of certain immune cells to adhere to cells in parts of the 
body that are being damaged. Researchers hope the approach will be more 
effective and produce fewer side effects than existing medications, which tend 
to dampen down the immune system overall.

 Drugs, Oil and War explores the underlying factors that have engendered a US
 strategy of indirect intervention in Third World countries through alliance with 
drug-
 trafficking proxies. This strategy was originally evolved in the late 1940s for the
 containment of Communist China; it has been resorted to since to secure control
 over foreign petroleum resources. The result has been a staggering increase in the
 global drug traffic and the mafias assorted with it, a problem that will worsen until
 there is a change in policy. The book traces also some of the processes by which
 some of these covert interventions have escalated into war.


The history of Opium and its trade will reveal that its use as a tool to reverse trade 
deficits and re-patriate precious metals has always led to conflict.  It is the trade 
in arms/contraband or the attempt to dominate this trade which establishes the cycle 
of violence between nations/empires, because it results in the economic pre-eminence 
of one nation over the other.  This ruthless regime is central to geopolitical 
interest and froms the nexus of parapolitical strategy.

It should be noted that Japan was the prominent trader in Opium/heroin to China, 
Korea, Vietnam prior to WWII.  Its regional expansionism used the trade as a strategic 
weapon to undermine opposing states with corruption, and to afford an arms race.  It 
should come as no surprise that the U.S. has these regions as a major portion of their 
geopolitcal strategy post WWII, and that the conflicts in these areas are carbon 
copies of one another.

Germany profitted greatly from the alcohol prohibtion, as did Britain- the traditional 
profiteer from prohibtions/trade on Opium, alcohol, precious spices for centuries.  
The rise of fascism was supported covertly by Britain/U.S. interests, until it was 
seen to be a danger greater than Stalinist Russia.  The initial strategy of 
undermining communism in Soviet Russia did work for a time until the Germans expended 
the force of their economy by the time they arrived in Stalingrad, but had also 
endangered the capitalist world.

Because the OSS and SIS had worked covertly with the Abwehr prior to WWII on 
parapolitical agendas involving prohibitionist/contraband trade, it should be noted 
that fascism was protected by the assmiliation of many operatives from Germany at the 
close of the war.

The many ironies of history can be easily followed by tracing prohibtionist trade.

In the summer of 1998, a wild, bodacious, steamboat captain and potseed 
fanatic named Breeder Steve shoved a book into my hands and told me that if I didn't 
read it, he would throw me into the ocean behind his house.

The book was titled The Politics of Consciousness. Its author was Steve 
Kubby, who now co-anchors a world-famous news show on Marc Emery's Pot-TV 
Internetwork, along with his beautiful wife Michele.

I started reading Kubby's book, intrigued by its psychedelic cover and 
revolutionary message, not wanting to swim in the Pacific courtesy of Spice of Life's 
Breeder Steve, a brawny but cute Canadian who could have easily thrown me into the 
salty froth with one hand tied behind his massive back.

Kubby's chapters were like sermons or songs: perfectly pitched, timed, and 
delivered with punch after punch that shattered the illusions foisted on us by the 
ruling elites while also warning of dark days to come.

Indeed, Kubby's book predicted with amazing accuracy the generally 
downward slide of democracy, freedom, environment and human potential that has 
occurred since 1998. Kubby was one of the first people to specifically predict that 
the USA would lose its Bill of Rights, that dictators would take over, that nature 
would be raped, criminalized, and murdered, that police would run rampant with 
impunity, that the American constitution would be trashed, and that most Americans, 
like sheep to a slaughter, would sit back and let it happen.

The Politics of Consciousness also contained Kubby's undefeatable 
enthusiasm and optimism. He urged readers to expand their consciousness with cannabis 
and other entheogens, and he gave many credible reasons and methods for standing up 
for freedom. The book was a call to action, not a depressing summation of despair, and 
when I finished reading it, I knew that I had to interview Steve Kubby and write about 
him for my cherished readers in Cannabis Culture magazine.

I found out that Kubby lived a few hours away from me and got in my 
battered VW van carrying my cameras and tape recorder, for the uphill drive to visit 
the author at his spacious Lake Tahoe, California home.

He spoke of his incurable adrenal cancer, surgery, extreme skiing, his ski 
magazine, his friendship with world-class scientists, his run for governor as a 
candidate for the Libertarian Party, his lovely wife and child, and how marijuana 
saved his life.

While we were talking, a couple of police officers were hiding in the snow 
behind his home, staring at us with binoculars. They took pictures of me while I took 
pictures of Kubby's medicinal pot plants and then watched me drive away.

A few days later, in early 1999, they ordered local cops to bust into my 
home and arrest me for medical marijuana. Their goal was to get me to testify against 
Kubby. I refused, so they took me to jail. Kubby and his wife had been arrested a few 
days earlier. His garden was torn up, his computers stolen, his family brutalized, his 
health endangered, his life made into torture chamber of poverty and worry. (CC #15,

As I am no scientist, I therefore try to make the unproven metaphysical
realm understood by my own simplistic understanding of it by way of my
tedious number crunching.

It was 7 years after the day when the Iron Horses 'Kissed' on May 10th 1869
when the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railway tracks met north of
Promontory, Utah. The Transcontinental Railroad signaled to the world that a
modern age of prosperity and national greatness was at coming to the United
States of America, it was May 10th 1876, the day President Grant opened the
American Exhibition. Philadelphia, to celebrate nearly 100 years of American
independence. An exhibition that some 9,789,392 people had visited.

The great American Exhibition of May 10th 1876 was 38 years after the birth
of John Wilkes Booth on May 10th 1838.

Horus is in the burning business

The great American Exhibition of May 10th 1876 was 57 years before the Nazis
began burning the books of 'unGerman' writers, including those by Heinrich
Mann, Upton Sinclair and Erich Maria Remarque, the author of  'All Quiet on
the Western Front'. So the illumination by the burning of the books of
enlightenment was a Nazi plan.

And 65 years after the great American Exhibition of May 10th 1876, that was
May 10th 1941, the Blitz, the worse day for London during the Second World
War, when 550 German bombers came to illuminate the city of London by
dropping 100,000 incendiaries.

So 57 years to the burning of the books + 65 years to the burning of London
is 122 years, that is 61 + 61 years, the reference number for the Ancient
Egyptian falcon masked god, the merciless killer of the sky.

The Skull and Bones burn and bomb

And it was May 10th 1915 and 39 years after the great American Exhibition on
May 10th 1876, that the German Zeppelins first bombed London.

So 57 years to the burning of the books + 65 years to the burning of London
is 122 years, + the 39 years to the Zeppelins bombing London is 161 + 161 is
322, the usual number reference for the Skull and Bones, the Jolly Roger,
the sign of death to all.

The 'Great Dance' in the Royal Albert Hall

The Masonic Bicentenary Celebration was held in the Royal Albert Hall on
June 24th 1917.

And counting from the great American Exhibition on May 10th 1876 to June
24th 1917 is 41.123 years or 15,020 days.

So to the 'Great Dance' arrives Horus, at 6,100 and as a son of God at 1,530
is 7,630. There in the Royal Albert Hall he meets with the Woman in Red, the
Abomination, the Whore of Babylon at 1,290 and she too wore a falcon's mask
at 6,100, a merciless killer of the sky at 7,390. And when 7,630 dances with
7,390 they are one flesh at 15,020 days.

And as they dance, and dance, around and around, the thousands of men admire
her, for they know that the coming together of these two from the great
American Exhibition on May 10th 1876 indicates the 15,020 days, and the
reference number for the Serpent at 1,700 + 6,660 + 6,660.

But then there others at the 'Great Dance' who think two people each at
15020 + 15020 + Lucifer at 2,790 + Lucifer at 2,790 is 35,620, and the
reference number 3,562 makes up the Masonic Holy of Holies.

Because a book on Freemasonry tells that the Masonic Holy of Holies has
1,453 columns, 2,106 pilasters and 3 grand pillars called 'Wisdom, Strength
and Beauty'. And thus 3,562 columns support their Holy of Holies.

So thanks to the great American Exhibition 7 years after to two Iron Horses
met, but did not dance, the Light Bearer himself wanted to illuminate the
Royal Albert Hall, as he danced the night away, with himself so to speak,
that is Horus and the Whore of Babylon.

This tax must be paid, either directly or through authroized
representitives, to specific religious institutions and is distributed and
used for Islamic educational subsidies for the students who are studying to
become Islamic scholars, hospitials, the poor, disabled,  widows and
orphans, to to build or repair places of worship and to pay salaries for
those leading prayers and serving in those places of worship. Khums money
can not be used for weapons, funding secular  political organizations, a
politcal party, or a government entity.

There are three countries, depending on which top scholar, a particular
person follows, where this tax ends up, unless special permission is given
to use those funds for local Islamic institutions where the person paying
the tax resides. It is where these various top scholars reside and their
institutions are located. Qum, Iran -- Najaf, Iraq -- or Lebanon. The Khum
tax has been obligatory for Shias for 1400 years and to not pay that tax
would be considered a major sin in the religion.

Hajj Amir was recently arrested after paying his obligatory Islamic tax,
under the recent Home Security Act and charged with sending funds to an
alleged terrorist organization.

This is a major infringement on the freedom to practice ones religion.  And
I am asking for help and support in stopping this injustice and denying
people the right and freedom that is supposed to be guaranteed in the US
Constitution to practice their religion in peace and without government
interference and harrassment.

Islamic charitable institutions have been under attack for quite some time.
9-11 is just being used as an excuse to destroy many fine and needed Islamic
charitible insitutions what have created hospitals, orphanages and have come
to the aid of Muslims in destress, that  are now competing with Christain
Missionary efforts to impose their brand of religion on many people in the
Muslims diaspora. Ashcroft is known for his zealot brand of religious
belief, so this latest attack on Islamic charitable institutions, in the
guise of Homeland security, should not come as a surprise.

This arrest goes beyond the infringement of rights of one innocent
individual but if not stopped in its tracks, thousands will soon be rounded
up for simply following their religious ideology that requires Muslims to
contribute a portion of their wealth for Khums, Zaqaat and Sadqa.

NEW YORK, Jan. 2 (Reuters) -- J.P. Morgan Chase  Co.
said on Thursday it would take about $1.3 billion pretax in
charges for litigation related to Enron Corp. and the global
research settlement announced late last month.

The New York-based bank said it would establish a $900
million reserve for costs of various private litigation and
regulatory inquiries involving Enron, including $80 million
for the research settlement.

It said it would also take a pretax charge of $400 million in
the fourth quarter, as part of its settlement on Thursday of
an Enron-related surety bond dispute with insurers.The
litigation reserve, after tax, would cut fourth-quarter earnings
by 30 cents a share, J.P. Morgan said.

December 31, 2002Years ago, a well known author, Bertram Gross, wrote that fascism would come to the U.S. with a friendly face: not with Nuremburg rallies, or doctrines of racial superiority, without formally banning parties, abrogating the Constitution or eliminating the three branches of government, but with the same nationalist fervor, arbitrary dictatorial laws, and violent military conquests...

In the U.S., signs of a police state are evident everywhere. Thousands of U.S. citizens of Middle Eastern descent have been arrested without charges, and the exercise of their right to criticize U.S. policy in the Middle East has been branded as support for terrorism. This pogrom has been encouraged and incited by government officials, especially by the police, both local and federal, and by assorted veteransâ groups and demagogic politicians. The president has decreed dictatorial powers, setting up anonymous military tribunals to try âsuspiciousâ immigrants and overseas âsuspectsâ who can be kidnapped and tried in the U.S. Habeas corpus has been suspended. School children have been forced to sing quasi-religious anthems and pledge allegiance to the flag. Many employees who voice criticism of the war or U.S. support of Israel or denounce Israeli massacres of Palestinians have been suspended or fired. All letters, emails, and phone calls are subject to control without any judicial review. The mass media spews government propaganda, churns out chauvinist stories, and is relatively silent on overseas massacres and domestic repression.

Mutual Suspicion

One of the hallmarks of a totalitarian regime is the creation of a state of mutual suspicion in which civil society is turned into a network of secret police informers. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) soon after September 11 exhorted every U.S. citizen to report any suspicious behavior by friends, neighbors, relatives, acquaintances, and strangers. Between September and the end of November almost 700,000 denunciations were registered. Thousands of Middle Eastern neighbors, local shop owners, and employees were denounced, as were numerous other U.S. citizens. None of these denunciations led to any arrests or even information related to September 11. Yet hundreds and thousands of innocent persons were investigated and harassed by the federal police. Tens of millions of Americans have become paranoidâfearing âterrorismâ in their everyday work, shopping, and leisure activities. People refrain from the mildest criticism of the war or the government for fear they will be labeled terrorist sympathizers, reported to the government, investigated, and lose their job.

Scapegoating

Friendly fascism scapegoats Arabsâarresting, investigating, accusing, targetingâwhile its public discourse proclaims the virtues of tolerance and pluralism. Racial doctrines are not in evidence, but racial profiling of âMiddle-Easternâ people is an established and accepted operating procedure of federal, state, and local police. Large concentrations of Arab communities, such as in Dearborn, Michigan, feel like they are living in a ghetto, waiting for a pogrom to happen. The head of the FBI considers all Arab civic, charity, and other associations suspect of aiding terrorism and subject to investigation and its members targets for arrest. The massive ârazzias,â police sweeps into houses, stores, and offices of civic groups, have created a siege mentality. The police campaign has aroused the racist instincts and fomented a rash of civilian insults and hostility.

Executive Dictatorial Powers

In totalitarian states, the supreme leader seizes dictatorial powers, suspends constitutional guarantees (citing âemergency powersâ) empowers the secret police, and handpicks tribunals to arbitrarily arrest, judge, and condemn the accused to prison or execution. On November 13, President Bush took the fatal step toward assuming dictatorial powers. Without consulting Congress, Bush decreed an emergency order. The order permits the government to arrest non-citizens who they have âreason to believeâ are terrorists to be tried by military tribunal. The trials are secret and the prosecutors do not have to present evidence if it is âin the interests of national security.â

The condemned can be executed even if one-third of the military judges disagree. Dictatorial powers to jail or execute suspects without due process is the essence of totalitarian rulers.

In mid-November, the Department of Justice refused to disclose the identities and status of more than 1,100 persons arrested since September 11. As in totalitarian regimes, political prisoners are constantly interrogated without lawyers and without charges by the FBI in the hope of forcing confessions.

The Cost of Israel to U.S. Taxpayers: True Lies About U.S. Aid to Israel

For many years the American media said that "Israel receives $1.8 billion in military aid" or that "Israel receives $1.2 billion in economic aid." Both statements were true, but since they were never combined to give us the complete total of annual U.S. aid to Israel, they also were lies--true lies.

Recently Americans have begun to read and hear that "Israel receives $3 billion in annual U.S. foreign aid." That's true. But it's still a lie. The problem is that in fiscal 1997 alone, Israel received from a variety of other U.S. federal budgets at least $525.8 million above and beyond its $3 billion from the foreign aid budget, and yet another $2 billion in federal loan guarantees. So the complete total of U.S. grants and loan guarantees to Israel for fiscal 1997 was $5,525,800,000.

One can truthfully blame the mainstream media for never digging out these figures for themselves, because none ever have. They were compiled by the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. But the mainstream media certainly are not alone. Although Congress authorizes America's foreign aid total, the fact that more than a third of it goes to a country smaller in both area and population than Hong Kong probably never has been mentioned on the floor of the Senate or House. Yet it's been going on for more than a generation.

Probably the only members of Congress who even suspect the full total of U.S. funds received by Israel each year are the privileged few committee members who actually mark it up. And almost all members of the concerned committees are Jewish, have taken huge campaign donations orchestrated by Israel's Washington, DC lobby, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), or both. These congressional committee members are paid to act, not talk. So they do and they don't.

The same applies to the president, the secretary of state, and the foreign aid administrator. They all submit a budget that includes aid for Israel, which Congress approves, or increases, but never cuts. But no one in the executive branch mentions that of the few remaining U.S. aid recipients worldwide, all of the others are developing nations which either make their military bases available to the U.S., are key members of international alliances in which the U.S. participates, or have suffered some crippling blow of nature to their abilities to feed their people such as earthquakes, floods or droughts.

Israel, whose troubles arise solely from its unwillingness to give back land it seized in the 1967 war in return for peace with its neighbors, does not fit those criteria. In fact, Israel's 1995 per capita gross domestic product was $15,800. That put it below Britain at $19,500 and Italy at $18,700 and just above Ireland at $15,400 and Spain at $14,300.

All four of those European countries have contributed a very large share of immigrants to the U.S., yet none has organized an ethnic group to lobby for U.S. foreign aid. Instead, all four send funds and volunteers to do economic development and emergency relief work in other less fortunate parts of the world.

The lobby that Israel and its supporters have built in the United States to make all this aid happen, and to ban discussion of it from the national dialogue, goes far beyond AIPAC, with its $15 million budget, its 150 employees, and its five or six registered lobbyists who manage to visit every member of Congress individually once or twice a year.

AIPAC, in turn, can draw upon the resources of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, a roof group set up solely to coordinate the efforts of some 52 national Jewish organizations on behalf of Israel.

Among them are Hadassah, the Zionist women's organization, which organizes a steady stream of American Jewish visitors to Israel; the American Jewish Congress, which mobilizes support for Israel among members of the traditionally left-of-center Jewish mainstream; and the American Jewish Committee, which plays the same role within the growing middle-of-the-road and right-of-center Jewish community. The American Jewish Committee also publishes Commentary,one of the Israel lobby's principal national publications.

Perhaps the most controversial of these groups is B'nai B'rith's Anti-Defamation League. Its original highly commendable purpose was to protect the civil rights of American Jews. Over the past generation, however, the ADL has regressed into a conspiratorial and, with a $45 million budget, extremely well-funded hate group.

In the 1980s, during the tenure of chairman Seymour Reich, who went on to become chairman of the Conference of Presidents, ADL was found to have circulated two annual fund-raising letters warning Jewish parents against allegedly negative influences on their children arising from the increasing Arab presence on American

Ariel Sharon's Shakedown

Tough Love for United, exclaimed the Wall Street Journal, as it
congratulated Uncle Sam for stiffing United Airlines' plea for $1.8
billion in loan guarantees. Rebuffed, the beloved old airline had to
declare its bankruptcy.


It's all for the best, the Journal assures us, maybe this tough love
rejection will start a new government precedent, or at least we can
dream. Fine. May we now expect the Journal to call on Mr. Bush to
reject the $10 billion in loan guarantees demanded by Ariel Sharon?
Don't bet on it.


Yet, Sharon's demand is astonishing in its audacity. California and
New York face huge budget shortfalls. The U.S. Treasury is running a
deficit nearing $200 billion. Yet, Sharon, who ignored Bush when the
president publicly called on him to pull his army out of West Bank
cities, is demanding that U.S. taxpayers fork over $4 billion in new
military aid and agree to pay off $10 billion Israel intends to
borrow should Israel decide to default.


Why should we do this? What does America get out of this? What has
all the $100 billion in aid we have shoveled out to Israel bought us,
other than ingratitude and the enmity of the Arab world?


While Israel has a first-rate military, it is of no use to us. In
Desert Storm, Bush I had to bribe Yitzhak Shamir with $5 billion in
aid, $400 million in loan guarantees, and Patriot missiles to stay
out of the fighting, lest Israeli intervention dynamite our
coalition. Journalists and diplomats alike, returning from the
Mideast, attest that our almost-blind support of Israel is a major
cause of the anti-Americanism that is sweeping the Islamic world.


When the price of Israel could be paid in dollars alone, $3 billion a
year, most members of Congress chose to pony up rather than face the
retribution of an Israeli Lobby that has in its trophy case the
scalps of two chairmen of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, J.
William Fulbright and Chuck Percy.


But now the price of the Israeli connection has begun to rise. U.S.
weapons technology given to Israel has been sold to China. Only
direct U.S. intervention prevented Israel from selling Beijing AWACS
technology. The Patriot missile, the Phoenix air-to-air missile, the
Lavi fighter, based on the F-16, have all been sold to Beijing.


In the Reagan era, Israel had the loathsome Jonathan Pollard, whom it
suborned into treason, loot our innermost national security secrets,
some of which are believed to have been traded to Moscow. Israel
refuses to return the roomful of documents it stole and has pressured
presidents for Pollard's release so he can be brought to Israel where
he is a hero.


Now Mr. Sharon has handed us Israel's bill for abstaining from war
with Iraq while President Bush is at maximum political risk. Not
since 1957, when Dwight Eisenhower ordered Ben-Gurion to get his army
out of Sinai, has a U.S. president faced down an Israeli Prime
Minister.


To his credit, the president's father tried. In 1991, having driven
Iraq out of Kuwait, with his approval at 70 percent, Bush I was asked
by Shamir for $10 billion in loan guarantees to bring a million
Russian Jews to Israel. Bush assented, on one condition: Shamir must
not settle them on the West Bank and must stop expanding settlements.


Shamir rejected the condition, and the Lobby went to work. Bush
warned he would veto the guarantees. An Israeli minister called him
an anti-Semite. While Shamir was defeated in June of 1992, Bush, his
own election

ALL nations of this planet are unanimously united in opposition to the policies of the current junta which has seized the mechanisms of state. Bush is endangering the very future survival of this great American republic through his reckless and religious pursuit of oil and defense PROFITEERING. Bush and his cabal of war profiteerers are cashing in right now. Four things the coming war against Iraq is not about:

It is not about terror. Proof A: No connection has ever been shown between Iraq and al-Qaeda; in fact, there is long enmity between their leaders. Proof B: U.S. leaders have clearly used Sept. 11 as a pretext to attack Iraq. Bob Woodward says in his new book that Donald Rumsfeld was already calling for Iraq's inclusion in the war on terror on "the day after"; national security adviser Condoleezza Rice told The New Yorker she asked her staff "to think seriously about 'how do you capitalize on these opportunities [my emphasis].' " This is the way that power thinks. Proof C (a deduction, but I find it the most persuasive argument): Attacking Iraq will increase the danger of terror attacks in the future. The misery of Iraqi civilians, especially kids, due to sanctions is already closely watched in the Arab and Muslim world. Casualties from bombing in the "no fly" zones are widely reported, though scarcely noted here. New, far greater death and destruction will raise further anger, and lead to more recruits for terror; it's elementary. Besides, even the CIA says Saddam Hussein is most likely to use biological or chemical weapons once he is attacked and cornered. You don't eradicate terror by creating more of it. Surely the American leadership knows this.

It is not about weapons of mass destruction. Proof A: North Korea, whose nuclear program is far more advanced than Iraq's, and which has the crucial delivery systems. Yet the U.S. has declared it will not attack North Korea. Evidently, having a real and credible WMD program exempts you from American attack. Proof B: Israel, which has had a large nuclear arsenal for 40 years that scares hell out of its neighbours. Security Council Resolution 687, paragraph 14, calls for removing all WMDs from the Mideast. The U.S. has never volunteered to enforce that clause.

It is not about democracy. Proof A: Saddam Hussein, whose tyranny the U.S. supported with military aid, including WMDs, as detailed in Iraq's report to the UN, up to the time at which he defied not his own people but the U.S. Former UN relief co-ordinator Dennis Halliday says that, even after the Persian Gulf war, U.S.-backed sanctions continued to prop up the regime and "weakened the very people who think about democracy" there. Proof B, C, D: Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, where the U.S. has far greater political and economic clout to press for democratic reform but has never done so. Proof E: Iran, which has limited but real democratic processes, and which made the "axis of evil" list nonetheless. Proof F, G: Turkey and Indonesia, Muslim countries with some level of democracy that got there on their own or, in Indonesia's case, despite U.S. support for its dictator. One could go on but one would run out of letters. The general point? Democracy is not something likely to be imposed by an invasion. Isn't that kind of obvious?

It is not about preventing damage to the U.S. economy, as George W. Bush suggested this week. This one defies rebuttal. He posits a nuclear, chemical or biological attack by unproven weapons through non-existent delivery systems, then worries about the effects on the economy rather than on human beings. (People lying in the wreckage screaming, Omigod, I lost my job!) It's the same sensibility he showed in cheerily approving 152 executions during six years as Texas governor.

So what is it about? Hard to choose: oil, domination, revenge, punishing an insubordinate client? Whew. At least we know what it isn't.

Addendum: I'm getting tired of reading in The Globe and Mail that criticizing Israel has become a cloak for anti-Semitism, as charged by Clay Ruby, Jeff Rose and Philip Berger, who call anti-Semitism "a powerful force" in the debate on the Mideast, or even a nuanced observer such as Shira Herzog, who claims that "some critics of Israel conveniently focus on Israeli wrongdoings to mask their blatant anti-Semitism." What I'd like is some specific examples. The former fret over analogies drawn between Israeli policies and apartheid, but those are made mainly by South African Jews who moved to Israel and were disillusioned, or blacks such as Desmond Tutu -- not obvious anti-Semites They refer broadly to chants at rallies or social slights being on the rise. The genuine anti-Semites, meanwhile, don't seem to require any masks or cover. David Ahenakew simply launched a classic anti-Semitic tirade. He included a few swift asides on Israel, but he clearly needed no camouflage. It's possible the process has worked in reverse: i.e., criticism of Israel has made anti-Semites feel freer to speak, but so far I see no problem making distinctions between them and the conscientious opponents of a particular nation's policies.

There is nothing more sickening than attempting to justify the war on Iraq on supposedly humanitarian grounds, as in freeing the Iraqi people from the dictator Saddam Hussein. âShouldnât human rights be the best cause for starting a war?â asked the Wall Street Journal on Dec. 8.

This is the vilest form of propaganda imaginable, not only because it is a corruption of basic human morality, but also because it is so patently false on its face. Even if it were somehow morally excusable to kill thousands of innocent people in order to free them from an alleged dictator, the fact is that human rights of the Iraqis has nothing to do with Washingtonâs motives for this war. There is a hidden agenda that is not being talked about, and itâs about seizing control of Iraqâs oil, and enriching the American oil industry. It is about seizing control of a part of the world that the US covets for any number of geopolitical reasons, including encircling Russia, still the only potential adversary to unfettered US global domination.

Everything that George W. Bush and the rest of the US leadership have said about Iraq is a complete lie. We now see that there are no weapons of mass destruction; some of the UN weapons inspectors have already said so to the media. Scratch the weapons of mass destruction; that red herring doesnât even deserve mention anymore. And then we have the constant lying about the no-fly zones. Time after time the Bush administration has told us how they are merely enforcing a UN Security Council resolution. This is a complete lie. The UN Security Council has never approved any no-fly zones, or even discussed them. Former UN secretary Boutros Boutros-Ghali recently confirmed this to British journalist John Pilger. But that has not stopped the US Congress from incorporating this bold-faced lie into its bill authorizing a war on Iraq, which states in part that, âthe current Iraqi regime has demonstrated its continuing hostility toward, and willingness to attack, the United Statesâ¦by â¦firing on many thousands of occasions on United States and Coalition Armed Forces engaged in enforcing the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.â

In other words, the Congress is peddling a lie in order to make up an excuse for attacking Iraq. In reality, those US and British planes are the ones breaking international law, by violating the airspace of a sovereign nation, an act of piracy. The Iraqis are completely within their rights to shoot in self-defense at these attackers.

And if we look at the supposed reason those no-fly zones are there in the first place, we uncover yet another massive lie. The no-fly zones were put in place to ostensibly protect the Kurdish minority in northern Iraq, and the Shiite Muslims in the south. But the Americans and British regularly allow Turkish warplanes to go in and bomb Kurdish villages. The British pilots have publicly protested this, because they are always ordered to leave when the Turkish planes go in to do their dirty business. In their public statement to the British media they say they are deeply troubled by seeing the burning villages left behind after the Turkish planes depart. So much for protecting the Kurds.

And now after all this deceit, we are being told that itâs all a great and wonderful humanitarian thing that we are doing when we go in and obliterate the cities, towns and villages of Iraq. Just like it was a great and wonderful humanitarian bombing when the US obliterated Belgrade three years ago, leaving several thousand innocent civilians, including hundreds of children, dead or disfigured. Peddling such disgusting justifications for war goes beyond any norms of human decency. Even Hitler never had the gall to invoke such outlandish justifications for his aggressions. Such twisting of morality is truly despicable, yet the US media continues to shamelessly trumpet these abominations, just as they did with the aggression against Yugoslavia three years ago.

BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS TIED TO GULF WAR SYNDROME

I have been an investigative journalist for the past 30 years and as a
journalist I base my reports on documented information. During the Gulf War,
I served as a member of a three-man volunteer environmental emergency
response team in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait, and returned from that
experience emotionally scarred, and with my immune system ravaged. After
recovering through a program of supplementation, I became very disturbed to
find hundreds and hundreds of emails from U.S. and Canadian veterans
complaining of something they called Gulf War Syndrome. My investigation into
biological weapons has been ongoing since I returned from the Gulf War, and I
uncovered the untold story of the biological war in the Gulf in my book
Bringing the War Home. In a previous book, Scorched Earth, I examined
biological warfare experimentation, particularly in the United States.

In January, 1999, I was contacted by the managing editor of the Environment
News Service, an international wire service which I had worked for in the
Gulf. I was asked to check out a story by William Wallace about very unusual
aerial activity over the state of Washington that was apparently changing the
skies overhead. Wallace and his wife lived in a remote mountainous area, and
he claimed that large unmarked jet aircraft were flying back and forth over
his property, spraying something in the air. Unlike normal contrails behind
commercial jets which dissipate quickly, these lingered for hours, came
together and obscured the sky. Mr. Wallace said that he and his wife were
very ill, their dogs were dying, and their plants were dying. I began to
investigate this story and after looking at a videotape made by Mr. Wallace,
realized as a former pilot and former member of the military myself, that
this was very unusual aerial activity. He gave me some of his contacts across
the Uni!
ted States, and as I followed up on those contacts, I developed a huge story.
As of today we have over 1,000 eyewitness reports on the so-called chemtrail
phenomena. We have documented evidence that chemtrail spraying is taking
place over cities throughout Canada, the United States, England, Australia,
Holland, Italy, Germany, and New Zealand. And I have uncovered direct ties
between biological warfare experimentation and the spraying of pathogenic
material and chemicals over our cities.

I have found in my research over the past 15 months that in every instance of
heavy spraying over cities across Canada and the United States, there has
been an epidemic of acute upper respiratory ailments and gastrointestinal
ailments that have overfilled hospital emergency rooms across North America.
After researching biological warfare, I found two U.S. Congressional
investigations documenting decades of biological warfare experimentation
carried out over hundreds of cities in the United States and Canada,
including Winnipeg. While these biowarfare simulants were said to be
harmless, some of the new genetically-engineered pathogens - particularly
mycoplasma and other fungi - are now loose among the general population. This
has occurred through vaccinations of Texas prisoners, and inoculations of
Gulf War soldiers - many of whom never left the United States.

Call Cisco on the telephone and they can verify everything I said about
them changing the IOS on the Cisco supplied modems to Quest
Communications which in turn passed them on to their parent company SBC.
Cisco told them that they could not support the modems if they did not
tell them how they altered the IOS. SBC did not care. You can call Cisco
on the telephone and verify if this is true or not. It is completely
true. Cisco was very concerned with how SBC altered the IOS because they
are also makers of Hardware Fire Walls and Security for computers. Go to
www.cisco.com and call them on the telephone. You can verify that this
is true. Get a small ISP in your area that uses SBC lines and use a
modem supplied directly from Cisco. If SBC changed the IOS in Cisco
supplied modems then they are also changing the IOS in any other modem
they pass on to their customers. TRUTH NOT FICTION. CALL Cisco and they
will verify that this is true.

DSL modems. Cisco informed me that they supplied the ADSL modems to
Quest Communications a division of SBC and this company modified the IOS
(Internet Operating System) and would not disclose to Cisco how they
changed the IOS so Cisco told Quest Communications and SBC that they
could not support the modem and SBC did not care. SBC is pressuring
small ISP's into buying their modified DSL modems and pass them on to
their customers. SBC modems are a DANGEROUS Trojan Horse that insiders
can use to get into your computer no matter what kind of firewall you
use because since the back door is through the ISO itself the firewall
will think it is normal traffic allow it. Do not use SBC or Quest
Communications supplied modems. Use modems from Cisco. Insist that your
small ISP use Cisco modems and thumb their nose at SBC.

SBC and Quest Communications modems are a dangerous Trojan Horse so
beware!

is censoring the internet from any free idea that they do not approve
of. Yahoo also has features in their indexing where when a site is
included in the index they can disable any keywords on your site they
want making it harder to find. Or they can enable only one keyword to
make it look like to one person who says; Use this keyword and verify
that my site is not in the list. This happened to me. Yahoo! for a
period of two weeks enabled that one unique keyword but the site could
not be found with any of the other keywords or combinations thereof.
Yahoo! is owned by Google who is also censoring the internet. I
appreciate www.alltheweb.com because they are a good honest Search
Engine so far. Anyone out there. If you want to see who is censoring
your site on the internet just insert a code into each of your pages so
you can use that code to quickly pull up your site in the Search
Results. If it does not come up then you will know right away who is
