Bug#607766: Fresh install of Squeeze on Thinkpad Edge 11; wireless network problems and grub oddity
reassign 607766 netcfg retitle 607766 Fails to configure WEP wireless network without DHCP thanks Quoting Ian Wakeling (ian.wakel...@ntlworld.com): First, it failed to find any accesspoints. My accesspoint doesn't broadcast, so I didn't expect it to find that, but my neighbours are all noisy, so it should have found those and it didn't. No matter, it offered me the option of entering the essid manually, which was fine and it then went on to ask me for the WEP key, also good. It said it was trying to configure with DHCP, which I don't have enabled, so I waited for that to fail and then configured it manually. No error messages at this point, everything looked fine. Then it failed to retrieve anything from the mirrors. Looking at the log on console 4, it claimed it had authorised with the access point, but going to console 2 and looking at ip link said the interface was down and I couldn't get it to come up. The ethernet configuration looked OK, but the lack of wireless tools meant I couldn't check the wireless configuration. That seems to be a bug that could be investigated in netcfg: WEP+manual network failing. There may be some timeout quirks somewhere. Although GRUB identified the two Windows partitions, they didn't appear in the boot options on initial reboot. Running update-grub later on fixed it. Should be fixed when the last versions of grub-installer migrate to testing, as far as I've followed these stories. The only other minor gripe was that the task selection interface offers Graphical Desktop and not having done a fresh install for quite a while, I naïvely selected it, expecting to be offered the choice of which desktop... but it went ahead and installed Gnome, which I did not want! I have absolutely no interest in a debate about the relative merits of the various desktops, but if the installer really can't offer the choice of desktops, the option should at least be labelled Gnome so that it's clear what is being offered and those who want something else can avoid wasting lots of time and bandwidth. Otherwise, it all went smoothly and everything worked - well done, thanks! This is a FAQ for D-I. There are tons of reasons for which we don't want to prompt users for the kind of graphical environment they want to use. GNOME being the default environment for Debian, it is logical that Graphical desktop brings GNOME in without an extra annoying question. Alternative GUI environment can be chosen through a boot command line option (see installation guide for details). I reassign this bug report to netcfg for the WEP issue. Many thanks for your report and the good details and explanations it contains. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

While this can be changed in .emacs, the backspace key not working out of the box is still a serious problem IMO. It seems that upstream FreeBSD plans to switch their $TERM into xterm, via TEKEN_XTERM. Actually the switch to xterm has happened already, more than one year ago: http://svn.freebsd.org/viewvc/base?view=revisionrevision=199250. Bug#607604: linux-image-2.6.32-5-openvz-amd64: nfsd oops after 'exportfs -ra'
On 21/12/10 17:19, Ola Lundqvist wrote: Thanks for your report. Could you try this with an unpatched kernel as this could be due to that the IPv6 actually works now. Hi Ola, Yes I tested this just now to make sure it wasn't related to the patch. I've reproduced the oops with the official build of 2.6.32-5-openvz-amd64 2.6.32-29. After booting, I did the usual 'mount --bind' onto /var/lib/tftpboot on the nfs server and ran 'exportfs -ra'. A system running a squeeze Debian Live image successfully boots pxelinux via TFTP from that directory, but then it tries to mount its nfs root filesystem there and triggers the oops. At some point I'll change the nfs mount so I don't have to use the 'mount --bind', to try to isolate that as the cause, or in case it's something else triggering it. New oops follows. Thanks. Bug#607791: libvirt-bin: No support for qemu in command 'attach-disk'
Package: libvirt-bin Version: 0.8.3-5 Severity: normal I have libvirt-bin 0.8.3-5 in squeeze. I am trying to attach more disks to a kvm image. The qemu driver is unsupported. Bug#606964: linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64: Xen fails to boot dom0 kernel on system with, lots of RAM
On Wed, 2010-12-22 at 07:20 +0100, Rik Theys wrote: Hi, On 12/14/2010 02:41 PM, Ian Campbell wrote: When adding dom0_mem=2G to the boot line, the system boots OK. I expect it will work ok with everything up to and including dom0_mem=32G? It does. Thanks. It depends a bit on your usecase but it is often best recommended to use dom0_mem= anyway, since you are most often going to balloon dom0 down significantly anyway to make room for guest domains. I agree and I was planning to use the dom0_mem parameter. But I did expect the system to actually boot. Maybe it should be mentioned somewhere that the dom0_mem _must_ be set on systems with 32GB memory? Yes, I should at least mention it in the wiki or something. I was wondering about clamping something in the kernel to correspond to CONFIG_XEN_MAX_DOMAIN_MEMORY and avoid the issue but you say the crash is after x VCPUS and before Scrubbing Free RAM so I'm surprised the dom0 kernel has run at this point and hence changing it would not help. The hypervisor doesn't know about this guest configuration item so there isn't much which can be done there. To try and confirm what is going on is there any chance you could you collect a serial console log with verbose debugging enabled by using the command line parameters described in Are there more debugging options I could enable to troubleshoot booting problems? of http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenParavirtOps (without the recommended dom0_mem). The primary options of interest in this case are loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all sync_console console_to_ring on the hypervisor plus com1=115200,8n1 console=com1 to enable serial logging and console=hvc0 earlyprintk=xen nomodeset initcall_debug debug loglevel=10 on the kernel. Assuming that shows that the domain 0 kernel did actually get a chance to run and crash I'll take a look at what else needs to be clamped to have it just work. Bug#607793: linux-image-2.6.26-2-686: scsi related kernel panic in 686 during boot, works in 486
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.26-26lenny1 Severity: normal I've recently installed Lenny on an old HP NetServer E60 machine. The installer worked perfectly, but after the reboot I got a kernel panic with flashing keyboard lights. A search lead me to bug 486168, which seems very similar (same hardware, same panic message). The comments there suggest using rescue mode to install a 486 kernel and boot it. I did that, and the system now works, but the 486 kernel recognizes just one CPU and not both. (I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the 486 kernel or not) A late comment in bug 486168 suggests disabling the memory hole in the BIOS settings. I checked the BIOS settings on my machine and the memory hole is disabled, yet the kernel panic still happens. I'd like to load the 686 kernel for increased performance, and possibly to take advantage of SMP. -- Package-specific info: ** Kernel log: boot messages should be attached Can't make it save the boot messages to a file, so uploaded as YouTube video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ahFTUIY4ZY I hope the quality is enough. crash it around 00:22 Note that I edited the kernel command line in grub. This variable is configured based, IIRC, on your setting of HOME_NET. So you should review your /etc/snort/snort.conf configuration file is properly defined. IIRC the value of HOME_NET is based on the defintion of DEBIAN_HOME_NET (in /etc/snort/snort.debian.conf) which is, in turn, is defined by the administrator when installing the package (through debconf). If the value is not properly defined this kind of stuff can happen. So I don't fully believe it is a bug in the package, it is associated with the user's configuration. However, the fix of this bug is really simple, just comment out the offending line. Alternatively, the debconf prompt could check that DEBIAN_HOME_NET is not defined to values that might cause problems. Bug#607688: [debian-installer] Some Spanish strinng malformed
On 21 December 2010 07:14, Christian PERRIER bubu...@debian.org wrote: This is an encoding problem in debconf's Spanish translation (yay for ISO-8859-1). The file is a mix of UTF-8 and ISO-8859-1 characters (those useless X-POFile-SpellExtra: headers) Some comments: - the file declares itself (in the PO header) that is UTF-8, I don't know why debconf tries to figure out the encoding if it is clearly defined in the headers. The X-POFile-SpellExtra headers should be omitted by debconf. - the X-POFile-SpellExtra headers are not useless, there are actually quite useful to do a spellcheck of the file using gettext-lint tools easily and catch mistakes in the translation. They list the words that have been considered good and are part of the dictionary used for spell-checking the file. - the X-POFile-SpellExtra headers where in ISO-8859-1 because I (in the past) used ispell for spell checking (which does not support UTF-8) as aspell did not work with POFileSpell, the latest version of gettex-lint (uploaded recently to the archive) works with aspell perfectly fine so I will switch. In any case, the fix for this bug is recoding just the X-POFile-SpellExtra headers to UTF-8. Christian, I cannot review right now the file you sent but I guess that's what you did. Bug#469104: installation-reports: Normal C/R netinstall successful except screen resolution too low
Hello Robert, Back in 2008, you submitted debian bug #469104. After looking at the log, it seams to me that the TDFX driver chooses it's resolution before reading the EDID information from the monitor. So it uses some default values for the hsync vrefresh range. You can try setting the appropriate ranges in your xorg.conf in section monitor: Section Monitor Identifier Generic Monitor Option DPMS HorizSync hmin-hmax VertRefresh vmin-vmax EndSection You can use the datasheet of your monitor to feel the ranges, or use some tools to detect them (ddcprobe might do it). I don't know if the driver is still developed, I mean 3dfx are pretty old cards now, so this is unlikely to be fixed, anyway you could also test debian squeeze. If it's fixed, tell me the version you are using so that I can close the bug. Bug#607796: Should include lvs=/sbin/lvs option in default /etc/mylvmbackup.conf
Package: mylvmbackup Version: 0.9-1 Severity: normal Tags: patch Option lvs= is not included in default /etc/mylvmbackup.conf If you launch backupfrom a root shell, it makes no difference, because /sbin is in root's path. But if you launch it from a cron job, it fails with te following error: 't exec lvs: No existe el fichero o el directorio at /usr/bin/mylvmbackup line 734 (#1) (W exec) A system(), exec(), or piped open call could not execute the named program for the indicated reason. Typical reasons include: the permissions were wrong on the file, the file wasn't found in $ENV{PATH}, the executable in question was compiled for another architecture, or the #! line in a script points to an interpreter that can't be run for similar reasons. (Or maybe your system doesn't support #! at all.) Use of uninitialized value $lv in substitution (s///) at /usr/bin/mylvmbackup line 736 (#1) (W uninitialized) An undefined value was used as if it were already defined. It was interpreted as a or a 0, but maybe it was a mistake. To suppress this warning assign a defined value to your variables. To help you figure out what was undefined, perl will try to tell you the name of the variable (if any) that was undefined. In some cases it cannot do this, so it also tells you what operation you used the undefined value in. Note, however, that perl optimizes your program and the operation displayed in the warning may not necessarily appear literally in your program. For example, that $foo is usually optimized into that . $foo, and the warning will refer to the concatenation (.) operator, even though there is no . in your program. Use of uninitialized value $lv in substitution (s///) at /usr/bin/mylvmbackup line 737 (#1) This option will be the same for nearly all Debian users and cases, so it should be put by default in configuration file. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.7 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-2-686-bigmem (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=es_ES.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=es_ES.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages mylvmbackup depends on: ii libconfig-inifiles-perl 2.39-5 Read .ini-style configuration file ii libdbd-mysql-perl 4.007-1+lenny1 A Perl5 database interface to the ii libtimedate-perl 1.1600-9 Time and date functions for Perl ii lvm2 2.02.39-8 The Linux Logical Volume Manager mylvmbackup recommends no packages. My previous attempt (with all of the above except but make pte_flags() go via pvops) failed because I botched the backport of radeon/PCIe: Use the correct index field. and only fixed one of the wrong indexes. It features rules based logging and can perform content searching/matching in addition to being used to detect a variety of other attacks and probes, such as buffer overflows, stealth port scans, CGI attacks, SMB probes, and much more. Snort has a real-time alerting capability, with alerts being sent to syslog, a separate alert file, or even to a Windows computer via Samba. . This is a common package which holds cron jobs, tools and config files used by all Snort-based packages. Maybe it should be made a dependency. Not sure why, but at least with a mutter alternative I guess? Didn't understand the bit about 32kb thing. Do you mean I write a lot or did the font-size make the bug-report big. More clarity here would be good . Got an expert advice ;) Apparently dropping event due to full queue indicates that the kernel never sends EV_SYN for this device. The driver queue the button and motion events until it gets the sync, so with no sync, the queue gets full... You should install evtest, and launch it once your mouse start to behave wrong. (to find the device you have to give in parameter you can look at your Xorg.0.log, it was /dev/input/event5 in the log you sent. so launch # evtest /dev/input/event5 move your mouse a little, and send us the output. Thank you, already installed evtest and now waiting for the mouse to behave as it behaves :P , would try to send the data as and when it becomes possible. Would you say below is a good idea $evtest /dev/input/event5 mouse.txt Just wondering, because when that happens sometimes the desktop also freezes or some other things happen. I could go to VT1 (CTRL+TAB+1)and fire that up from there and let it do it work. Also after firing it up, when I'm sure the data is captured how do I make it stop, do I do a CTRL+C or some other keyboard combo so the data is safe and pristine. A better set of instructions would go a long way in helping me deliver the data that would be needed to pin-point what is wrong. I wanna be in a position to be able to generate the data, if desktop freezes or anything else, save that data, shutdown the system and restart and still the data is there. Then will send you. Because of the freakishness of the mouse, I'm not able to trust the GUI and the system as much as I would like. That would help understanding what's wrong. Yup. Bug#553047: libc6: (cross) libc-2.10.1.so/powerpc: ELF file data
Dnia czwartek, 28 października 2010 o 08:06:35 minami napisał(a): Shouldn't we stop tweaking LD_LIBRARY_PATH to cross-build gcc? In my understanding, the error message: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/powerpc-linux-gnu/lib/libc.so.6: ELF file data encoding not little-endian means: failed to load the Perl interpreter with $LD_LIBRARY_PATH/libc.so instead of /lib/libc.so. Yes, it means that. I solved that by adding /lib:/usr/lib: to LD_LIBRARY_PATH in attached patch. Fortunately, recent versions of dpkg-shlibdeps seems to be wise enough to detect GCC_TARGET and DEB_TARGET_GNU_TYPE and we no longer have to tell dh_shlibdeps where to search libraries using a special environment variable. Would be nice. Anyway with attached patch I managed to package biarch powerpc and triarch mipsel gcc-4.5. Please take a look. Bug#607364: linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686: High resource consumption for note(net)books
Tested. With kernel from experimental (2.6.37-rc5) my netbook gets crazy: hibernate disable my swap at next reboot (then I need use mkswap manually, and then swapon -a) and don't works. And in some reboots fsck needs recover something in my root partition. Anyway, the numbers (activations/second) sounds better in this version. After upgrade of firmware-linux and linux-base packages (needed by the new kernel), my hibernate option do not worked anymore even at old kernel (2.6.32). Then I back them to testing versions and needed manual intervention to fix the hibernate problem (installing and configuring uswsusp). Due to the version problems, I got the last stable version (2.6.36.2) and compiled. The numbers with powertop sounds better too (maybe better than 2.6.37 version, but I need test more time). I will test for some hours and put here some more info. 2010/12/19 maximilian attems m...@stro.at On Sun, Dec 19, 2010 at 03:51:42PM -0200, Saulo Soares de Toledo wrote: Upgraded. Bug#607673: gnucash: Left arrow, right arrow and backspace keys don't work in register
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 severity 607673 important tags 607673 - moreinfo help thanks Hi Shannon, Am 21.12.2010 20:01, schrieb Shannon Dealy: Your idea that it was SCIM related was correct, however, it wasn't the patch that is the problem. I tried rebuilding and installing gnucash as you suggested without the 10_fix_broken_SCIM_input_bug_587298 patch and it had no effect. Good to hear, then it is at least no regression (caused by this patch). However, I do run with SCIM installed (for use with other programs), and terminating it allowed both versions of gnucash to start working correctly (with and without the above patch). Then, we have a workaround. Hence I don't believe anymore that this bug is release critical, so I am lowering the severity again. Restart the background daemon and gnucash immediately stops working correctly. So the problem would appear to be SCIM related, but (not knowing the internals of gnucash), I do find it puzzling that the problem only affects transaction editing (register and scheduled transactions), but not any other dialogs that I have tried. I would have expected that all keyboard input to the program would behave the same. I think we should re-check the issue with latest stable upstream version Gnucash 2.4.0, which has been released some days ago. I hope I get around to craft some experimental packages for this release soon... On Wed, 2010-12-22 at 11:12 +0200, Ilan Tayari wrote: Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.26-26lenny1 Severity: normal I've recently installed Lenny on an old HP NetServer E60 machine. (I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the 486 kernel or not) That's correct, it is a limitation of the 486 kernel. A late comment in bug 486168 suggests disabling the memory hole in the BIOS settings. I checked the BIOS settings on my machine and the memory hole is disabled, yet the kernel panic still happens. I'd like to load the 686 kernel for increased performance, and possibly to take advantage of SMP. -- Package-specific info: ** Kernel log: boot messages should be attached Can't make it save the boot messages to a file, so uploaded as YouTube video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ahFTUIY4ZY I hope the quality is enough. crash it around 00:22 [...] The key messages are clear: [5.812886] ahc_pci:0:5:0: Using left over BIOS settings ... I think that this error would normally indicate a fault in the SCSI adapter and the driver should not panic, but that may not be easy to avoid. Bug#582021: linux-image-2.6.32-bpo.4-xen-amd64 misses networking booting domUs installed via xen-tools
I wonder if this is simply down to the Lenny kernel having netfront built static and the Squeeze backport kernel has it built as a module. Perhaps combined with some failure to autoload the module for some reason (bug in module-init-tools, something about the domU filesystem configuration etc). To confirm please add xen-netfront to /etc/modules inside the guest. For some reason (maybe the size it's more than 32k, which is huge for an email) your report did not make it to the debian-x mailing list, so maybe now that I'm replying an expert will see it ;) Thank you. Didn't understand the bit about 32kb thing. Do you mean I write a lot or did the font-size make the bug-report big. More clarity here would be good . It's mainly the size of the Xorg.0.log file, you could have removed a few of the repeated lines at the end. Yes, launching evtest form a VT should do it. but then you're going to have a huge file were all the firsts lines will be normal, basically what we are trying to find is if the EV_SYN event is still send. This event is displayed as -- Report Sync so you should probably cut the file and remove the middle part where the sync events look normal. That would help understanding what's wrong. Yup. If it's ok with you, I'll go ahead with if the maintainer hasn't already done so in a day or so. jmm has confirmed there will be no DSA for it. Based on the manpage for sources.list (with the most preferred source listed first), I actually believed that the order of lines in /etc/apt/sources.list mattered, and since I had unstable listed first, I thought my system was running unstable for the most part. But a post on debian-user triggered a thought which sent me on a tangent, which led me to the page at http://osdir.com/ml/linux.conectiva.apt-rpm/2003-11/msg00043.html which said (among other things): ...no matter what's in apt.conf.d, placed there by packages or whatever. Sources.list currently behaves exactly the opposite vs sources.list.d - I think the rule of least surprise should be followed here, instead of trying to change all documentation and brainwash users to forget about /etc/apt/sources.list :) So I tinkered around in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d, and found the local file, which had: we...@westek:/etc/apt/apt.conf.d$ cat local APT::Default-Release lenny; APT::Install-Recommends 0; APT::Install-Suggests 0; I changed lenny to unstable, ran aptitude update and aptitude install gramps, and now gramps works. Bug#607817: xmobar: request to enable --with_inotify build option
Package: xmobar Version: 0.11.1-1 Severity: wishlist I sent the maintainer an email about this and then realized I should have used BTS instead! Sorry to be a bother :) One of the features I really like in xmobar is the optional Mail plugin. If you haven't used it, its very handy, and uses inotify (via the Haskell hinotify package) to show you message counts on Maildir folders. I thought I'd check with you to see if its possible to add that feature to the build, by adding the --with_inotify flag. To help, I've made a debian package of hinotify and have been getting assistance from the Debian HaskellGroup to get it packaged. Bug#607793: linux-image-2.6.26-2-686: scsi related kernel panic in 686 during boot, works in 486
Ben, thank you very much for your time and effort. On 22.12.2010 16:35, Ben Hutchings wrote: The key messages are clear: [5.812886] ahc_pci:0:5:0: Using left over BIOS settings ... I think that this error would normally indicate a fault in the SCSI adapter and the driver should not panic, but that may not be easy to avoid. However, since the 486 kernel works, the fault is clearly in software. I figured as much, thanks for the clarification. Could you test the 686 kernel with the added kernel parameter 'maxcpus=1'? Well I'll be... :) I added maxcpus=1 and the 686 kernel loaded fine. What can I do next? Is there any chance to fix or work around this so that I can get dual-cpu support? Ilan. Bug#607640: nslcd: Allow tilde (~) in group names and user names
On Mon, 2010-12-20 at 15:05 +0100, Raphaël Hertzog wrote: nslcd refuses to return group names which contain a tilde. It does this on the basis that it's not part of the portable filename character set: http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/basedefs/V1_chap03.html#tag_03_276 I would argue that it's not really nslcd's job to validate what's in the directory and that it's up to the user to decide whether he cares about the portability of his user/group names. The check is currently used for two things: - filtering data returned from LDAP (mostly to check if reasonable data is returned and to avoid confusion over group members that are specified as DN) - filtering requests from applications that will be translated into LDAP searches Since user and group information is rather sensitive (incorrect data can have security consequences) I would prefer to have strict-as-reasonable checks for users and groups to avoid surprises. A lot of applications make (incorrect) assumptions on user names and can behave strangely if they are different than expected. Also, since nslcd is often indirectly accessible from outside the machine (think http://host/~user requests, SSH probes or u...@host emails) some care is in order. In that regard things can be improved further in nslcd (e.g. checks that returned full names or home directories are not random binary data). You have already added exceptions by allowing $ and I would like to ask you to add another exception for ~. Since ~ is used by shells (and other applications) to expand user names to user home directories I think it will be confusing to allow it as a first character, but for other places I don't see a problem. Is that a problem for your configuration? But you should probably revisit the problem as a whole. Good programming principles is to be tolerant in what you read but be strict in what you send. By that I mean that it's not really nslcd's job to impose supplementary restrictions that are not needed. Or at least those restrictions should be configurable so that they can be disabled. In principle, I agree. The issue at hand is however that data that appears to be invalid should not be passed along since there may be security implications. Perhaps it is a good idea to rework the username (and groupname) check and make the check itself be configurable (perhaps using a regexp in the configuration file). Patches for this are most welcome ;) Anyway, thanks for bringing this up. -- -- arthur - adej...@debian.org - http://people.debian.org/~adejong -- signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
