DPL debate 2005: 19 March 2005, 23:00 UTC
[This should have gone to d-d-a in the first place too, sorry] Hello, world. This year's DPL debate will take place on Saturday, 19 March 2005, at 23:00 UTC[0]. It will last for two hours. The meeting will take place on the Freenode IRC network[1], using two channels: #debian-dpl-debate: on this channel, the candidates answer questions and debate. The channel is moderated by Helen Faulkner and myself and open to the public in read-only mode. #debian-dpl-discuss: here, the community can hang out and ask questions while the debate is going on. While Helen and I will have a set of discussion topics prepared, we will monitor this channel and give the candidates the opportunity to speak out on some of the issues raised here. It is possible that we will need moderators for this channel. If you are interested in helping and are experienced with IRC, please contact Helen or myself in private. That is all for now. We will announce details about the debate format at the end of the coming week. 0. You can use date -d '19 Mar 2005 23:00 +0' to find out the exact time in your timezone. 1. I only realised that OFTC has already been mentioned by Manoj after making an announcement on debian-vote. Thus, to avoid further confusion, we stay on Freenode now. -- .''`. martin f. krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] : :' :proud Debian developer, admin, user, and author `. `'` `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing a system Invalid/expired PGP subkeys? Well, my point was to have a common predefined way of doing it: once you install kdm (or someone else), or move to xdm or whatever, you still can disable the start of X by putting nox in the command line, instead of having to erase the links in rc2.d. Acutally there should be no link in runlevel 2 to start a *dm because runlevel 2 is for console only mode. Greetings Ben -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Shouldn't kernel-image-2.6.x-y-z depend on alsa-base ?
When you install an alsa-modules package for the 2.4 kernel, you get alsa-base per the dependencies. However, when you install sarge with a 2.6 kernel, alsa-base doesn't end up being installed. If you use 'obfuscation' or in other words 'readability' as measurement what source is then a lot of perl code would not qualify in my eyes. And since the source would be DFSG free you and anybody else would be free to edit it, comment it, reverse engeneer it and make it more readable. I find that option important enough to overlook other minor (and changeable) details. In my eye even _deliberate_ obfuscation (which remains to be proven) does not violate the letter of DFSG#2 while it does not follow its spirit. There are other sources in Debian that are far more unreadbale or even compiler output (e.g. pascal to c compiler output). Sometimes it is either that or no package at all. And is that in the users interest? If you want to argue against obfuscated source you have to pull the GPLs 'The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it.' out of your hat or similar license terms. Under that term deliberatly obfuscated code would not be source. MfG Goswin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But if the author works with the unobfuscated version, then the obfuscated files are something like Java class files, not source. Which in itself is near impossible to proove. We have to believe that what is released as source by the author is source (as defined by its license mainly) unless it becomes too unbelievable. e.g. a char foo = { 0x12, ... } that shows a gcc footprint when disassembled would be absolutely unbelievable. Having a #define REG1 0x4653 or just 0x4653 wherever REG1 is used certainly isn't out of the believable. Or do you claim that any precompiled Java class package should be able to go into main because you can always use gcj to compile those files into native code? That would help Debian Java support, though :) Java class files are bytecode binaries. And while gcj can cross compile from bytecode binary to native code they clearly are not source. Their main inteded purpose is to be run on a java VM and not being input for gcj. But where (obfuscated) source ends and binary begins is very unclear and probably overlapping too. I couldn't write down any consistent rule for it. I can only go by gut feeling there. MfG Goswin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I expect neither of the BSD-type Debian ports has anything in /proc that's not a pid or self... I have a sneaking suspicion that the Hurd- based Debian port is like that too, but I've never booted Hurd. As noted to a couple of people in private, this is specifically the case. On NetBSD, /proc is solely process info (and is, in fact, entirely optional right now, if recommended). Stuff found in /proc/sys is found with sysctl, but there isn't really any preservation of information about the kernel startup that I know of; I can't speak for Hurd ports. I'm not gonna speculate on the win32-based port that may or may not actually have come into existance, but I strongly doubt it has (would have) a /proc on the grounds that the win32 kernel doesn't actually have a / to mount things under... Can't comment on this. And given that even Linux itself is looking to migrate non-PID things from /proc to /sys where sensible, I wouldn't rely on things like /proc/cmdline to be around come Linux 2.8. We can only hope (though cmdline stuff is still, in some sense, proc related... /proc/kernel?) -- Joel Aelwyn [EMAIL PROTECTED] ,''`. : :' : `. `' `- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: Shouldn't kernel-image-2.6.x-y-z depend on alsa-base ?
When you install an alsa-modules package for the 2.4 kernel, you get alsa-base per the dependencies. However, when you install sarge with a 2.6 kernel, alsa-base doesn't end up being installed. The result is that for most sound cards, both OSS and ALSA modules end up installed, resulting in various and random problems. To avoid that, shouldn't the kernel-image packages for 2.6 depend on alsa-base? Maybe it's better just not to provide oss drivers for chips supported by alsa? AFAIK OSS will be removed from kernel soon... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Shouldn't kernel-image-2.6.x-y-z depend on alsa-base ?
[Nikita V. Youshchenko] Maybe it's better just not to provide oss drivers for chips supported by alsa? AFAIK OSS will be removed from kernel soon... It may or may not be removed soon - I note that it isn't listed in Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt in kernel 2.6.11 yet. Anyway, two reasons not to drop OSS prematurely: One, while almost all OSS hardware is technically supported, by ALSA, some chips and configurations are supported *better* by OSS than by ALSA. Some vice versa. It would be bad to take away the option to try the other driver in cases where you have problems with the one. A sub-case of this is that the snd-pcm-oss driver doesn't always perform to expectations. Apparently Doom3 doesn't like it, and I've heard complaints from other people about it as well, though I can't remember what hardware or applications were involved. Two, even if ALSA drivers were perfect, upgrading a working configuration that uses OSS to a kernel that only provides an ALSA driver for your hardware is just one more avoidable upgrade hurdle. In article [EMAIL PROTECTED] you wrote: Can we assume your systems are all Linux-based Debian? Frankly I dont care about others, yes. I mean it is OK to use portable interfaces where present, I just dont think this works in all cases. In that specific case of course runlevel is already a general solution (I asume this is somehow emulated on windows?) announcing first release of common database infrastructure package
hey folks, you might remember some time ago i started a thread[1] or two[2] about developing a consistant policy/feel for how database (more specifically rdbms) application packages should work. well, since then i've spent a lot of time working on both a 'best practices' document as well as a debian developer toolkit for easily implementing the previously mentioned suggestions. dbconfig-common abstracts almost 100% of the database-maintainance related work into a common package that can be used by any package maintainer. it consolidates efforts, code, and bugs into a single more easily maintainable place, provides for an easier experience on the part of the developer, and a more integrated experience for the end-user/admin. anyway, i've uploaded my first public release of dbconfig-common to experimental. minus a couple bells and whistles (and probably plus a bunch of undiscovered bugs), it's pretty much feature complete for what's mentioned on my webpage[3], so at this point i'd like to call for some brave volunteers. anyone who is tired of having to spend hours maintaining their home-rolled mysql/pgsql mangement maintainer script code is whole heartedly encouraged to check this out! sean [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/10/msg00340.html [2] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/10/msg00962.html [3] http://people.debian.org/~seanius/policy/dbconfig-common.html -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature
help with bug 296693
Bug 296693 is a grave bug which reports a catastrophic guile crash in gnucash. However, it doesn't happen for me. The user told me that it did happen even for other machines of his. Yet, nobody else has reported it. Can a user with an i386 attempt to reproduce the bug and report back? Also, I would appreciate advice about what the proper course to take is here. I could just close the bug, but if the user is having a real problem... Thomas -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As such they don't define what source is or what forms of 'source' are acceptable but use the broadest term saying just 'source'. If something is still acceptable as source (like having source without #define's) or not (like having a plain gcc -S output) has to be decided case by case. Just saying obfuscating violates DFSG#2 doesn't cut it in my opinion. That is far to broad a generalization to be usefull at all. Say the upstream author has personal references to NDA protected materials (e.g. /* see page 17 of foobar */) in his source and has to remove them before release. Why would that make the source unacceptable? Having somewhat obfuscated source violates the spirit of free software and up to some level that can be tolerated. As long as the software comes under a free license (and follows it) and the maintainer is happy working with the source in the form it is in why should anyone object?
