No, it's marketing. Tailored unrequested junk mail.

Once you give in to having to send messages one at a time, it isn't hard
to fake a response to a faked message, in the hopes of bringing more
uncautious people to drive by your website.

Or someone is being randomly sarcastic.

One of these days I'll get someone to pay me
to design a language that combines the best of Forth and C.
Then I'll be able to leap wide instruction sets with a single #ifdef,
run faster than a speeding infinite loop with a #define,
and stop all integer size bugs with a bare cast.

Intresting dd fsck grub uuid fstab action

2017-05-24 Thread Fungi4All
I experimented in switching a clone of my sid installation to an experimental,
that was the plan.
Since I was doing other things I thought I'll let the cloning take place
unattended.
Let's say sda5/6/7/8/9 were to be cloned to sdb5-9 (5 / 6 var 7 sw 8 tmp 9
home) all b partitions were slightly larger.
I used dd bs=1M for each one and though all I had to do is log in sda5 edit the
sdb5 fstab and then update-grub.

1 - Does dd leave uuid targets as they are, does it create new ones, or does it
copy uuid from source to target?
2 - When I rebooted sda5 was not booting up properly. Eventually I checked its
fstab and corrected it but at this poing the system run an fsck and I got some
errors and hit y,y,y,y, for fixing. I don't know if the errors came from uuids
existing in the system twice.
3 - Updating grub seemed to have made a bigger mess as now I could boot up but
the partitions were mixed up between sda and sdb parts. It would boot-up on
root / of sda and have a home in sdb9
4 - Eventually to stay safe I booted from live usb and edited all the
partitions, gave them separate labels to avoid any confusion (as "Deb on Sda6
var..."_) and switched to all new uuids to clear up the mess. Re-edited fstab
on bot sda and sdb (hd0 and hd1 dos5) and rebooted sda and updated-grub again.
5 - Here is the unexplained part: My sda5 system booted up fine and normal,
when I would try sdb5 the second line would say debian clean on sda5!!!

So I went into grub.cfg to see what is going on. On the menu entry of the
second installation the first line of each entry would have the proper sdb5
uuid, the following line - which I believe is the actual command - had the uuid
from sda5. So, am I to assume that grub when it updates only replaces the first
line of each entry expecting the next uuid will be the same, even if it is not?

So I got it all fixed, not much to see in the experimental part for my interest
except some kernels 4.10 and 4.11, but the puzzle is not solved. Where exactly
did I go wrong? I'm just proud of myself for fixing it, but could there be a
bug somewhere? For a minute or two I thought maybe grub was falsely detecting
some kind of raid action between the two drives and mirror partitions, but I
have no raid (intentionally).

Feel free to replicate the mess and I learned to hate gparted for taking so
damn long from each operation to the next.

Yes, the bash function I use is:

battery ()
{
local BATTERYFILE="/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/uevent";
[ ! -r $BATTERYFILE ] && printf '%s\n' "$BATTERYFILE not found!" && return
1;
date +%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S;
cat $BATTERYFILE;
local FILEBATNOW="/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_now";
local FILEBATPREV="/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_full";
local CHARGE=$(( 100 * $(< $FILEBATNOW) / $(< $FILEBATPREV) ));
[ $CHARGE -lt 100 ] && printf '%s\n' "Charge: $CHARGE%"
}

AIUI uevent gives you the lot, which varies by model etc.
so just   cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/uevent
should do it, with and without the power supply connected.

(I run a slightly more sophisticated version that also
reads the CPU temperature, has error trapping, and changes
the root window colour according to battery state and,
if frying, temperature.)

Cheers,
David.

I think you've misread the labelling here: charge, not voltage.
This "good as new" battery yields the following:

2017-05-24-18-19-29 (timestamp)
POWER_SUPPLY_NAME=BAT0
POWER_SUPPLY_STATUS=Discharging
POWER_SUPPLY_PRESENT=1
POWER_SUPPLY_TECHNOLOGY=Li-ion
POWER_SUPPLY_CYCLE_COUNT=0
POWER_SUPPLY_VOLTAGE_MIN_DESIGN=1110
POWER_SUPPLY_VOLTAGE_NOW=11968000
POWER_SUPPLY_CURRENT_NOW=1372000
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL_DESIGN=380
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL=1032000
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_NOW=998000
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY=96
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY_LEVEL=Normal
POWER_SUPPLY_MODEL_NAME=DELL JG1688
POWER_SUPPLY_MANUFACTURER=Sanyo
POWER_SUPPLY_SERIAL_NUMBER=770
Charge: 96%

2017-05-24-18-42-30
POWER_SUPPLY_NAME=BAT0
POWER_SUPPLY_STATUS=Discharging
POWER_SUPPLY_PRESENT=1
POWER_SUPPLY_TECHNOLOGY=Li-ion
POWER_SUPPLY_CYCLE_COUNT=0
POWER_SUPPLY_VOLTAGE_MIN_DESIGN=1110
POWER_SUPPLY_VOLTAGE_NOW=10604000
POWER_SUPPLY_CURRENT_NOW=2036000
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL_DESIGN=380
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL=1032000
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_NOW=55000
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY=5
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY_LEVEL=Low
POWER_SUPPLY_MODEL_NAME=DELL JG1688
POWER_SUPPLY_MANUFACTURER=Sanyo
POWER_SUPPLY_SERIAL_NUMBER=770
Charge: 5%

So that's a loss of 91% charge in 23 minutes. The reviewer of
this machine reported a battery life of over 200 minutes.

The large (400 minute) version of this battery went through a
similar course of gradual failure, except that one or more cells
started to go bad:
Feb 2014: laptop power lights started to beat a tattoo, indicating a problem.
Jul 2014: full capacity down to about 30% of the design maximum.
Mar 2015: total failure; battery power lamps flashed 1 3 5 when pressed.
  I've never seen a non-linear pattern documented, either for
  the short or the long press.

Both batteries date from at least 2009 so I can't really complain.

Cheers,
David.

Today the supplier sent me an email telling me that they tested with the
new battery, and it operates perfectly. They left the new battery
without power connected, and it operated with correct autonomy. They
checked the battery's power levels from the terminal and it reached the
maximum load limit correctly and then it was decreasing normally.

When you talk about "the numbers", do you mean to see by the console the
values that are obtained for both batteries (voltage, for example) to
make a comparison?

bien. Par contre si j'en refais un ensuite j'ai de nouveau des erreurs et

Certains sont des liens vers les mêmes dans /var/lib/apt/lists mais d'autres

Bref j'y comprends rien.

Nowadays this battery merely acts like an UPS because the laptop
has to be plumbed in to a monitor to be usable (or else used over
ssh). As reported earlier, there's a fault in the screen circuitry
which means it's not really a portable anymore.

It would certainly be interesting to see the numbers from a new
battery if you buy one. I've never owned a laptop (or any other
computer, for that matter) from new.

This is a real problem, and I have no intention of using it for any
other reason than as a temporary fix to the MATE desktop background
issue. There are much better applications for viewing/editing pictures
(Eye of Gnome/MATE, and GIMP come to mind). I expect that as soon as
the background issue is resolved, I'll probably remove feh from my
system as well, as it has no other use for me.

I prefer to keep feh off my systems; its description is a lie.

feh - image viewer and cataloguer

It's an editor that has no concept of a buffer, but just scribbles
over the original file. And, IIRC, the error message, when thwarted
by a read-only file, is incorrect: it blames the permissions of
the directory, not the file.

Cheers,

I installed and have been using feh as a stop-gap until the Debian
repositories catch up to upstream and/or fix the problem in Stretch.
Been working just fine, with its limitations. It's better than a black

Certainly possible. His kernel was compiled 30 March. -3 was compiled 3 May. I
just installed it, but /requirement/ of "apt-get dist-upgrade" is technically
incorrect. I just did it this way just minutes ago:

apt dist-upgrade

:-)

Anil's log from about 3+ hours ago shows he's using the modeset(0) Xorg driver
still.

He still hasn't reported which video player(s) cause his trouble.

Installation of IceWM takes less than 8MB of disk space. Using it

startx /usr/bin/icewm

to run his player(s) should tell whether the playback performance problem is in
Gnome or elsewhere.

What happens if you add the tries option here?

sdb2_crypt UUID=c3063f61-b2d8-4bbe-9c73-0dd04cb1f4b8 none
luks,discard,tries=2,cipher=aes-cbc-essiv:sha256

and did you update your initrd ? I advice to do it after changing anything
related to crypted root partition as those config files are added to the
initrd

what if you disable CRYPTDISKS_ENABLE in /etc/default/cryptdisks (and
update initrd)

the rest is to see whats in systemd around it

Nowadays it may actually requires BIOS/UEFI _and_ processor microcode
updates as well.

The BIOS/UEFI updates work around issues related to power management and
suspend/resume. The microcode updates fix internal CPU to iGPU
low-level issues that typically results in processor hangs, or iGPU
misbehavior.

You'll need to do an "apt-get dist-upgrade" to bring in the 4.9.0-3-amd64

Greg: I do believe I am not using a dm since looking for lightdm or gdm

I have one more question, doing apt-get upgrade mentions

this be related?

If Gnome is not for me, then I can live with that (someone said
(debian-laptop list) they have my exact same laptop and is running
Gnome, I dont know how he did it), I guess I can go to Mate if
necesssary, could the video playback issue also be resolved this way??

thanks a lot, sorry for the long email

Merci pour vos liens mais trop lourd, je voulais inférieur à 250Mo,
c'est puppylinux 64 bits ci-dessus qui me convient = 240Mo.

In stretch, startx uses /var/log/Xorg.0.log if you run it as root, or
~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log if you run it as a non-root user.

(Learned that one the hard way... trying to diagnose my own Intel video
chipset issues, and kept looking at the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from
that one time I had run startx as root, instead of the *current* log
that was being written elsewhere. Took a while to figure out why my
changes were having no effect in the log)

Yup. This changed with the intel->modeset switch in stretch. The modeset
driver wants firmware.

All my Stretch installations are using /var/log/ for Xorg.#.log whether I use
startx (with or without a DM running) or not. All my openSUSEes are, and even my
Fedoras IIRC.

Once upon a time, Intel gfx did not need any firmware that was not part of a
default or minimal installation. :-(

D'un autre côté ce n'est pas parce que les serveurs debian abandonnent le ftp
que apt ne saura plus gérer un dépôt via ftp, non ?

I suppose it's worth a shot, but the modeset driver is supposed to
be the correct choice for most Intel graphics chipsets in stretch,
even those that were supported by the intel driver in jessie.

A more common suggestion might be to verify that all of the necessary
firmware has been installed, especially if some of it is from non-free.

dmesg | grep -i firmware

See if there are any errors about missing firmware there, and if so,
track down and install whichever packages contain those firmware blobs.
It's pretty likely that he'll want firmware-misc-nonfree for example.

He got his Xorg.0.log from $HOME instead of /var/log, which means he is
running startx, not using a display manager.

I'm not sure whether you need to reboot after installing new firmware.

Given that that log contains no (EE) errors, switching to a different DE might
be a solution.

That log also reports the modeset(0) driver is in use. It's possible that the
Intel driver would work better. If you wish to try the Intel driver and

dpkg -l | grep intel

does not return

xserver-xorg-video-intel

then do

apt install xserver-xorg-video-intel

and

cp /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-intel/xorg.conf /etc/X11

followed by login manager restart or reboot. Then report results and provide
Xorg.0.log on https://paste.debian.net again if not a satisfactory improvement.
Also if not improved, do

journalctl | grep failed

and post that result here if fairly short, or on https://paste.debian.net/ if
extensive.

Also, try a different WM/DE, as this problem could be limited to Gnome. FWIW, I
use TDE on Stretch, installed via these instructions:

For what is worth: a few hours ago I've received several mails that look
similar.

They are seemingly sent from valid Gmail accounts (received by my
inbound SMTP from Google outbound servers and authenticated via SPF and
DKIM). They all contain an angry/sad reply on top of a quoted spam
message. My email and name is quoted as the original author of the spam
message. The spam message looks similar to what Fungi4All quoted.

The interesting part is that all the mails have a In-Reply-To and
References headers. These headers contain message ID from one of my
previous mails to debian-user.

I see no indications in my server's log files that the quoted spam
originated from my server.

My guess is that these were genuine replies from Gmail users to spam
sent with my address in a spoofed From: field. Perhaps someone figured
out that using Message IDs from valid mails allows them to circumvent
Google's spam and SPF/DKIM checks.

Best regards
Tomaž

If security if a wireless network is the aim you will be using WPA2.
Nobody is getting through that in a timeframe which makes sense. Hiding
the SSID is very appealing to some people, so they advocate it. It does
nothing for security, one way or the other.

In case it is useful, when the authentication fails I get this in
/var/log/auth.log:

--
May 24 15:31:38 server2 saslauthd[2701]: do_auth : auth failure:
[user=daniel] [service=imap] [realm=] [mech=sasldb] [reason=Unknown]

It seems that authentication is done through IMAP and I have previously
installed the Cyrus packages.

Thanks in advance,

Kind regards,
Daniel

Il est préférable de basculer en http via un petit serveur vite

efficace et moins performant que le http (pour le téléchargement de paquet).

The workaround is using the feh package to manually set the background
image. This does work, however, it has to be done each time you
log-in. It is better than nothing. Upstream also appears to have
a bug reported on it, and they suggest installation of mate-desktop
16.2 with caja 16.3, neither of which has made it to the Debian
distribution as of yet.

Being one who emphatically avoids graphics I found a subtle gotcha.

The man page
_mentions_ setting wallpaper in passing my noting "Use --no-xinerama to
treat the whole X display as one screen when setting wallpapers."

An example command line to use would be (as a single line):
feh --no-xinerama /usr/share/backgrounds/mate/desktop/GreenTraditional.jpg

It also does not mention how to set it as the wallpaper ;)
Once the above command has displayed the chosen image:
 1. right-click anywhere in the image
 2. chose File->Background->Set Filled from the displayed menu/sub-menus

Trouble with Sierra Wireless MC7710 mSATA LTE Modem

2017-05-24 Thread Jonathan Marquardt
Hi!

I am trying to get this thing working.

Debian 8.8 on Lenovo ThinkPad X220

Originally, Linux seems to detect the thing but then does nothing with it.

dmesg:

##

[1.950070] usb 2-1.4: config 1 has an invalid interface number: 7 but max
is 5
[1.950079] usb 2-1.4: config 1 has no interface number 5

[1.952080] usb 2-1.4: Manufacturer: Sierra Wireless, Incorporated
[1.952084] usb 2-1.4: SerialNumber: 358178040028229

##

ifconfig doesn't list any wwan0, no /dev/ttyUSB* exists.

So after a lot of searching I found this forum post:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2121838
User bmork created a udev rule there which appearently works for the Ubuntu
guy over there. So I copied the rule and created it for me as well. I'm
copying it here just in case:

##

ACTION!="add|change", GOTO="mbim_to_qmi_rules_end"

SUBSYSTEM!="usb", GOTO="mbim_to_qmi_rules_end"

# ignore any device with only one configuration
ATTR{bNumConfigurations}=="1", GOTO="mbim_to_qmi_rules_end"

# force Sierra Wireless MC7710 to configuration #1
ATTR{idVendor}=="1199",ATTR{idProduct}=="68a2",ATTR{bConfigurationValue}="1"

LABEL="mbim_to_qmi_rules_end"

##

Now dmesg says a few more things after a reboot:

##

##

So, now ttyUSB{1..4} are being created, the drivers are being loaded and
everything, but shortly after during the booting process the "USB" device
(it's actually mSATA) disconnects. Has someone an idea what's going on? What
am I missing?

I think at that state it is 95% (828/872) and I think these correspong to 8.28v
and 8.72v which is as good as new.
At 8.72v the charging current is switched off to protect the battery. I would
think these are 2 x 4.2v polymer batteries with an x amount of amph. What
distinguishes a good battery from an old and tired one is the voltage drop
after a certain load has been placed (resistance) and how long does it take to
fall below a functional level.
In most cases these batteries will go down to 3.2v under load and this is when
your electronic circuit will cut them off because amps go so high it may fry
itself. A tired battery will show 4.18 and 2" after you hit the power button it
will go down to 3.1v.
A broken battery will not reach 4.2v or it will go up in smoke while you are
trying to charge it. The problem with those twin packed cells in series is that
due to manufacturing inconsistencies you can hardly find an identical pair
ever. One is a little bit difficient to the next. Which means that at 8.6v one
is almost 4.4 the other is 4.2 and one is getting overcharged the other stays
undercharged. At the end of their season the one is as good as new the other is
all warn out from overheating cycles. When you open a cheap tablet up that has
had battery problems it is almost visible which one of the cells is
problematic. The other is always good!

Nothing like a fresh marine deep cycle acid lead battery, now that is some good
vaping current :)

If the image doesn't have the icon, it probably (but not
certainly) doesn't have the installer.

That's OK, if you've got network access from the live system.

(If you don't have network access, go copy a Debian install DVD
to the SD card and boot from that.)

Assuming your network is networking:

sudo apt-get install debian-installer-launcher

...

and after a bit, you should be able to start
debian-installer-launcher from the menu.

You're misinterpreting the X log. The lines in question actually say:

[65.388] Build Operating System: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 Debian
[65.388] Current Operating System: Linux laptopanil 4.9.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP

root=UUID=47d1db29-628c-4a50-9ab1-808217075da8 ro quiet

Which is to say, this system is running kernel package 4.9.0-2-amd64,
but the X server was *built* by the Debian maintainers under kernel
package 3.16.0-4-amd64. Which is not relevant to the current problem
as far as I'm aware.

6th line down, is the new debian9rc installer same as Debian 8.8?
I assume jessie was installed and then it was upgraded to stretch, right?
So some of the X and dm configuration files were based on Jessie and were just
revised based on those settings.
That's what I think. I may be very wrong as my knowledge is incomplete.

Fungi: this is an Asus X441SA laptop, is this also mix and match laptop?

I don't know, I've never had one. I know that lenovo dell hp stuff are well
tested and ironed out in all systems, maybe some sony toshiba etc. I know
nothing of asus, I've used some of their mb building and repairing stuff.

I did a clean install from Debian installer of Stretch, nothing is left
from previous Jessie.
swithching *dm is still a valid idea in this case?
thanks a lot,

It was a suggestion of an easy and safe thing to do. It takes 5-10' round trip,
or 2 reboots.
If I remember right you have lxde. Between that and Xofc it is the safest bet
to figure out what may be wrong, the rest of the desktops I believe are much
more demanding and have more to go wrong with.

The official stretch installer will not be out till it becomes stable. There is
a beta version of it out but I've never used it. I doubt it would say 3.16 on
it though. You can't get to GT from a v6 mustang that easy :)

Ok, this will be controlled by the BIOS, I suppose, and there is no way, to

When I add "nolapic" to the kernel , then everything is working fine, but then
one of the two cores disappeared. Would be nice, if I could have both cores,
you might understand. :)

All in all, I can run the notebook (it is no need to put it into trash). It is

Issue with SASL authentication

2017-05-24 Thread Daniel Bareiro
Hi all!

I am configuring SASL to authenticate against IMAP. When I try to
authenticate, I get an error:

--
root@Wserver2:~# saslpasswd2 -c daniel
--
root@Wserver2:~# testsaslauthd -u daniel -p password
0: NO "authentication failed"
--

However it works when I provide the realm:

--
root@Wserver2:~# testsaslauthd -u daniel -r server2 -p password
0: OK "Success."
--

It's strange because I have another server where it works without problems:

--
root@mail:~# testsaslauthd -u daniel -p password
0: OK "Success."
--

Both hosts have Debian Jessie and the SASL configuration is the same:

--
root@mail:~# grep ^[^#] /etc/default/saslauthd
START=yes
DESC="SASL Authentication Daemon"
NAME="saslauthd"
MECHANISMS="sasldb"
MECH_OPTIONS=""
THREADS=5
OPTIONS="-c -m /var/run/saslauthd"
--
root@server2:~# grep ^[^#] /etc/default/saslauthd
START=yes
DESC="SASL Authentication Daemon"
NAME="saslauthd"
MECHANISMS="sasldb"
MECH_OPTIONS=""
THREADS=5
OPTIONS="-c -m /var/run/saslauthd"
--

"mail" has some updates to apply, but I do not see any differences in
the versions of the SASL packages:

--
root@mail:~# aptitude show libsasl2-2 | grep Versión
Versión: 2.1.26.dfsg1-13+deb8u1

root@mail:~# aptitude show libsasl2-modules | grep Versión
Versión: 2.1.26.dfsg1-13+deb8u1

root@mail:~# aptitude show sasl2-bin | grep Versión
Versión: 2.1.26.dfsg1-13+deb8u1
--

--
root@server2:~# aptitude show libsasl2-2 | grep Version
Version: 2.1.26.dfsg1-13+deb8u1

root@server2:~# aptitude show libsasl2-modules | grep Version
Version: 2.1.26.dfsg1-13+deb8u1

root@server2:~# aptitude show sasl2-bin | grep Version
Version: 2.1.26.dfsg1-13+deb8u1
--

In this case I'm not doing the authentication test against IMAP but
directly against SASL, so I guess the problem will be directly related
to the SASL configuration itself.

Any thoughts about what might differ between the two environments?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Daniel

I understand that Larry does not miss the desktop but rather the launcher.
If so, the SD card with the live system has already booted successfully

Let me rephrase. In the context of Linux kernel parameters that Hans is
talking about, the acronyms refer to these things:

APIC = Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller

LAPIC = Local Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller
(local refering to a CPU in a SMP system having its own controller)

ACPI = Advanced Configuration and Power Interface

APM = Advanced Power Management

ACPI and APM are system features directly related to power management
(with ACPI replacing APM in recent hardware). They handle battery
charging, putting system in sleep modes, etc.

"Complete software ACPI independent from hardware" isn't possible. In
the end, you need some cooperation from hardware to trip a switch if you
want the computer to power off after shutdown.

APIC and LAPIC are related to power management only in the way that
power management related peripherals can trigger interrupts that are
configured through them. But so does the USB controller, disk drives, etc.

Sorry for my delay in responding.

I'll cross my fingers for you, David. How did your laptop battery continue?

Just yesterday I took my notebook to the provider to test with a new
battery. He said that today he will be contacting me to let me know the
result of the test.

I'll let you know when I have news. Something I can add since my last
update to the mailing list is that the battery charge level with the
charger connected was gradually falling. At the time I took it to the
provider I had 18%.

Many thanks to all who responded to me for the interest and time.

We had a user with a Braswell system (Intel Pentium N3710) in IRC

the m.2 SSD next to dual-boot Win10.

I read on one of the Debian.com pages
https://www.debian.org/CD/live/index.en.html , that there's supposed to be a
"launcher on the desktop that can be used to install while running the live
image." Unfortunately, I didn't find one.

I Googled, but was unable to find any information on how to install from the
live system.

Is anyone able to offer a pointer to the method of installing to HDD from
the live USB image?

Hah. This is Intel architecture. Entropy itself. Nothing is unlikely.

I don't know for sure, but this thing from the Inertubes looks similar
(there it is apic, the OP is lapic, but the remaining phenomenology
looks similar. Perhaps a search on "power off apic" turns up more
relevant dirt :)

APIC is Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller. This is not directly
related to power management. Interrupt controller manages how the
processor receives interrupts from peripherals. It seems unlikely that
it could be related to your problems.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the issue you're facing, and I can't
reproduce it on a jessie box. My contribution was simply to point out
that httpredir.debian.org is deprecated.

Interestingly, I can download the file Translation-en.bz2 from
cdn-fastly.deb.debian.org without a hitch. The problem appears to be at
your end, not with the mirror.

By the way, please don't top-post. It irritates people here.

Dumb questions to apic

2017-05-24 Thread Hans
Dear list,

this is a little bit offtopic. I got a broken notebook as a gift (did not
start, no bios screen, nothing!). Now I managed to get it running again.
Everything is working, execpt the bios.
The bios is broken, and the backup battery is empty in seconds.

But that is not the problem, just background info.

I can start the notebook, and debian/testing is running fine. But when I want
to reboot or shutdown the notebook, it does not switch off. I believe, it is a
bios problem.

So I tried with several kernel parameters. I tried

acpi=force
apm=off
noacpi

But none of them worked. When I tried "nolapic", then I can reboot and
shutoff, but then only one cpu is available.

As I do not know, where to search, I googled to get information, the meaning
of acpi, nolapic and so on. "lapic" is local apic, but what is this? And can I
switch completely to a software acpi, so that I am independent from the
hardware? Which kernel command is the choice?

Hope, someone can make this little point clearer.

Best regards

Hans

The point being that throwing phpmyadmin away and reinstalling is
trivial, whatever the OS. As I said, it's just a few web server scripts.
Debian just makes it even more trivial, and makes setting up mysql just
as easy. We recently went through this with mariadb, and I discovered
that setting that up isn't so easy, since there is no postinstall script
supplied by Debian like the mysql one.

Had things been the other way around, and the OP had installed mysql
and twenty applications which use it, and they had all set up their
users and databases, and that lot had to be reinstalled... yes, that
would have been a big deal, in Debian or anything else.

Yes, you've done it backwards, but it's no big deal in Debian.
phpmyadmin needs the root password of mysql in order to install

In all other systems it is a catastrophic mistake, but in Debian it is no
biggy, you just throw everything away and start from scratch. :) :) :) :) LoLLL

Sorry, I spent some time in my youth in sales, I know what it's like. Otherwise
the advise was compact and sensible. One question I have is why isn't dpkg
requiring such order of pre-requisite and dependency but can allow phpadmin to
be installed without mysql being there. [please don't let that answer be "you
should have read the manual first"]

As things are evolving with servers and keyringers one needs a separate
encrypted debian system to be running somewhere with all the keys and
passwords, unless one choses the logical path of using one for everything, in
which case sometimes it gets really confusing for what this passphrase was for.

Did your dpkg just get updated? Or is it just me?

When I have enough money to replace this half-broken laptop I'm using,
I'll probably post more questions on the above.

Thanks.

One of these days I'll get someone to pay me
to design a language that combines the best of Forth and C.
Then I'll be able to leap wide instruction sets with a single #ifdef,
run faster than a speeding infinite loop with a #define,
and stop all integer size bugs with a bare cast.

hi everybody

since I'm periodically burning some installation-CD of various puppylinux,
I want to ask a small question: have you ever thought of back-up-ing the
usb and just format it again?

... or am I misunderstanding?

Please.

Either contribute something constructive or just shut up.
This kind of infantile behaviour just poisons the list for the
rest of us. On whichever side of The Big Rift we may live.

And *if* you feel the urge to vent off at other people's expense,
then at least have the courtesy of quoting properly, instead of
dumping all the original post in your reply.

and at the same time it represents a subtle troll bamboozling and

Now it seems to be all right! The right driver was rastertosamsungspl, but my
mistake was to do:

 # cp -vi i386/at_root/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl
/usr/lib/cups/filter

, whereas I had to, after unpacking UnifiedLinuxDriver_1.02.tar.gz:

 # cp -vi x86_64/at_root/usr/lib64/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl
/usr/lib/cups/filter

, because my new Lenovo desktop machine is 64-bit...

Thanks to Brian and to all who kindly helped...
