[digitalradio] I Hate Computers and Radio!!!! Interference. Update - Got is Quiet :)

2009-09-30 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
G'Day All,

THANKS to everyone for your help, ideas and suggestions.
I tried a couple of options, first trying my newesh ASUS laptop (6 months),
this worked well and there was hardly any noise on the radio, s-meter hardly
moved and was fully usable.
I then tried improving the desktop, added ferrits chokes on the supply lines.
This did nothing to improve things.
So out came the spare computer from the garage, removed what was an ASUS power
supply and connected it up to the M/B and other drives.

Turned HF radio on and powered up the power supply (not the M/B), quiet
Now turned on the whole computer and had a minute (just moved the s-meter, and
just heard) noise, nothing to concern myself with this time, and allowed me to
receive those weak signals that are around due to poor conditions.

So now I have a computer in the radio roomthat will allow me to operate both at
the same time.

I will improve it further when I get the earth matting completed.

Only problem I have now it seems that down this way 7080 and surrounding
appears to be used for voice, difficult to operate digital, but persevering
(sorry for my spelling it's late)

Regards and Thanks.

Kevin. ZL1KFM.

[digitalradio] Re: [WINMOR] Winmor setup - sound card AND transmitter audio

2009-09-30 Thread Tony
Andy,

but why 60% as opposed to 70 or 20 ?

Rick can answer that better than I can, but I believe the 60% two-tone drive
limit was established to prevent the multi-tone PSK mode peaks from overdriving
the transmitter.

Setting the two-tone level to 20% will just lower RF output, but going over 60%
can cause problems; distortion / splattering.

 All,

I think it's important to mention that it's still possible to overdrive
ones transmitter if the Winmor two-tone slider is the only adjustment used
to reach the maximum 60% RF drive level.

Re: [digitalradio] Re: Winmor Path Simulaitons

2009-09-30 Thread Tony
Dick,

It will be interesting to see how your results alter with version 0.3.2.0 and
 future
 versions when released. Dick G4BBH

Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way to test ARQ modes like Winmor
without a more elaborate setup than the sound card path simulator. I can only
record / playback and test Winmors connect request mode.

Two PC's and an outboard HF simulator between them would be useful for this
sort of thing. It would allow one to test other modes like ALE-400 ARQ.

I should be able to use virtual audio cable to record my own signals straight
from the sound card during a live Winmor connect / file transfer and that would
allow me to capture the different modes as Winmor cycles through them.

I can then use those one-sided signals to see how they perform with various HF
path simulations. The problem is that Winmor might not acknowledge those
signals, but the constellation score might. That should give some indication of
how good or bad throughput might be.

A new version of RMS Express has just been released (29 September) and may
affect things considerably once users have updated as there are several
changes.

For what it's worth, I ran Winmor connect request signals through Moe
Wheatley's path simulator. These tests are usually pretty good indicators of
how digital modes perform and compare over a real HF channel.

That said, the results of these tests may not reflect Winmors real potential
so take them with a grain of salt. Running the path simulator on the same PC
as I did with a mode that's sensitive to sound card performance and CPU
usage is probably not the best for optimum results.

I haven't figured out a way to test Winmor other than the connect request
PSK mode so these tests are at best, a glimpse of what to expect when
connecting with other stations under a variety of conditions; sound card
 issues aside.

I should point out that some of these HF path simulations are severe with
enough signal distortion to make one slow to a snails pace, even on CW!

[digitalradio] Multipsks ALE-400 - Simultaneous mail transfers and more.

2009-09-30 Thread Tony
All,

John (VE5MU) and I had a lengthy ALE-400 contact this evening and we decided to
experiment a bit. We found that while I was sending mail to John (mail gets
stored in Multipsks mailbox) he was able to continue chatting with me.

In other words, he was able to type messages and I was able to see them while
my outgoing mail was being transferred. Of course, the conversation was
one-sided until the mail transfer completed; Multipsk automatically switched
back to two-way ARQ chat mode after that.

We also found that it was possible to send mail to each other SIMULTANEOUSLY.
This slowed the transfer down of course since the usually short acknowledgments
from the receiving station turned into ACK + mail data.

Patrick's Multipsk / ALE-400 is certainly unique. The mode itself seems to have
a good balance between robust performance and speed.
