Re: [Dx4win] What is the future of DX4WIN?

2023-11-20 Thread Dennis Petrich
As a user of DX4WIN since the 90s I really like the software and do not intend
to change to any other logging program. Even though some have some nice
features I find DX4WIN does everything I need and more.

My only request might be to make the upload to lotw more automatic than it is,
but that’s it.

Excellent, absolutely great! Works like a charm, thank you and K8ESQ who also

The key was using ZZMD00. I was so close as I tried with one zero not knowing
what those zeros are for:)

There are some minor differences in the files of K0EOO and K8ESQ. Not sure if
they matter:

I have Flex CAT set via FlexradioSSDR over virtual COM port created in SmartSDR

mode on Flex is set to DIGL not RTTY.

I know the MD command nr 6 sets DIGL. I think it has remained from older times
when Flex used DIGL for RTTY. How now to make DX4WIN set correct mode RTTY?

In Win-Test there is workaround through Omnirig which lets to select ZZMD30

Any ideas how to solve this??

It is very simple to do.

1. Simply create an up to date ADI file of your entire log using DX4WIN.

2. Under logging in JTAlert, point to this file as your log file.

3. In JTAlert, use scan log and rebuild

4. Specify mode as FT8 for example, and all your DXCC countries worked and
needed will be updated for that mode.

New worked stations will be automatically added to the ADI file you created in
step 1. As always, create a back up copy of your log in case something gets
hosed up.

Worked great for me. Good luck.

There doesn't appear to be a simple way to do this, as far as I can tell. I
think that Paul would need to make some kind of an interface available.

There might be some way to have JT-AlertX do a period ingest of an ADI file to
get the countries, but I just decided that I'd treat everything as a new one on
FT8 so I haven't bothered to try (though fortunately my needed list of ATNO is
small enough to enter manually).

Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Importing WXJT-X ADI file into DX4WIN V9?

From his email:
I got tired of navigating to the WSJT-X directory every time I wanted to import
my WSJT-X log into DX4WIN. Fortunately, Windows 10 has a solution. The idea
is to create a symbolic link in your SAVE directory that points to the WSJT-X
log directory. The full instructions for creating symbolic links are here:

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-
symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/

Here's the quick start:

1. Start by opening a Command Prompt in Administrator mode. From the Start
menu, find "Windows System" and right-click on "Command Prompt'.
Follow the "More" link and then click "Run as Administrator".

2. Determine the location of your WSJT-X log directory. Here is one way:

cd %localappdata%
C:
dir

You should see a WSJT-X directory there. The full path should look
something like this:

C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

3. Now determine the location of your DX4WIN SAVE directory. Mine is here:

E:\dx4w903\save

4. "cd" into your DX4WIN save directory:

cd E:\dx4w903\save
E:

From his email:
I got tired of navigating to the WSJT-X directory every time I wanted to import
my WSJT-X log into DX4WIN. Fortunately, Windows 10 has a solution. The idea
is to create a symbolic link in your SAVE directory that points to the WSJT-X
log directory. The full instructions for creating symbolic links are here:

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-
symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/

Here's the quick start:

1. Start by opening a Command Prompt in Administrator mode. From the Start
menu, find "Windows System" and right-click on "Command Prompt'.
Follow the "More" link and then click "Run as Administrator".

2. Determine the location of your WSJT-X log directory. Here is one way:

cd %localappdata%
C:
dir

You should see a WSJT-X directory there. The full path should look
something like this:

C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

3. Now determine the location of your DX4WIN SAVE directory. Mine is here:

E:\dx4w903\save

4. "cd" into your DX4WIN save directory:

cd E:\dx4w903\save
E:

5. Finally, create the link. Here is the command I used:

E:\dx4w903\save> mklink /D WSJT-X C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

(do not type the part *before* the >, only the part beginning with "mklink"

That's all there is to it. The next time you want to import using "File |
Import", you will see the WSJT-X link in your SAVE directory.
Double-click on that link, and you'll find your WSJT-X ADIF file there.

This is not limited to WSJT-X, you can create links to anything you want.

Import", you will see the WSJT-X link in your SAVE directory.
Double-click on that link, and you'll find your WSJT-X ADIF file there.

This is not limited to WSJT-X, you can create links to anything you want.

From his email:
I got tired of navigating to the WSJT-X directory every time I wanted to import
my WSJT-X log into DX4WIN. Fortunately, Windows 10 has a solution. The idea
is to create a symbolic link in your SAVE directory that points to the WSJT-X
log directory. The full instructions for creating symbolic links are here:

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-
symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/

Here's the quick start:

1. Start by opening a Command Prompt in Administrator mode. From the Start
menu, find "Windows System" and right-click on "Command Prompt'.
Follow the "More" link and then click "Run as Administrator".

2. Determine the location of your WSJT-X log directory. Here is one way:

cd %localappdata%
C:
dir

You should see a WSJT-X directory there. The full path should look
something like this:

C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

3. Now determine the location of your DX4WIN SAVE directory. Mine is here:

E:\dx4w903\save

4. "cd" into your DX4WIN save directory:

cd E:\dx4w903\save
E:

5. Finally, create the link. Here is the command I used:

E:\dx4w903\save> mklink /D WSJT-X C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

(do not type the part *before* the >, only the part beginning with "mklink"

That's all there is to it. The next time you want to import using "File |

This is not limited to WSJT-X, you can create links to anything you want.

Yes, no problem. I import the WSJT-X adi file all the time. I used AD1C’s
file shortcut recommendation to make it easier. A couple clicks and your QSO’s
are in DX4Win. When you import, DX4Win asks you want you want to do about
duplicate QSO’s - don’t import duplicates. Then only the QSO’s since the last
import are actually imported.

Re: [Dx4win] FlexRadio and Dx4win

2018-02-25 Thread Dennis Petrich
Let me know if you don’t have the driver in your DX4WIN radio folder….

This is what it should look like in the radio data base tab.

Thanks David and Dennis. I will try the drivers. I am just using whatever
DX4win includes and Winkey driver in SmartSDR. Will post my result here. After
spending major portion of 2 days working on this and the new rig I had planned
to take a day off. From radio. Not gonna be easy now :-).

You have to use the same RADIO file you used in v8.05. “FlexradioSDR” Go into
your radio folder for 8.05 and copy it to the radio folder for 9.03.

Dennis,

When you open the Edit Function Keys window, if you check the control keys
box, it will show you macros 11 - 18 (which you access by CTRL-F12 for
example). Then you can edit number 18, which you can call from within
other macros by using the %18 function.

Sorry I misunderstood - I hope this helps.

Hello Bud,

Yes, I know how to get to and Edit the function keys. %18 is a macro to send
“your name” and “Your QTH”, which should be Dennis and Lakeville MN, but,
instead its sending Paul and Occoquan, Virginia.

Hi Dennis,

Right click in the Function Key descriptions at the bottom of the MMTTY
Text window and select Edit Function Keys. The list of Function Key macros
is in the help file - use Index to search for macros.

Re: [Dx4win] IC-7100 and other rig files

2017-10-22 Thread Dennis
Guy,

Thanks for the tip. Had a problem with my Flex 6700. The v9 Flexradio Rig
file was not working (radio timeouts). Copied the old v8 FlexradioSSDR file
to v9, and DX4WIN now "talks" to the 6700.

Hi All,

For all that might have certain RIG files "not working OK"
in Version9 that were "OK" in Version8
Pse send me that RIGFILE, so I can have a look what is going on.

In the meantime you can always copy your working rigfile from
Version8/radios
In to Version9/radios directory,
Even better is to rename it first to (rig)v8.rig and then copy it to V9
Makes it easier to compare and select the good one

Is the old radio file compatible, I can use that one while you search for

Consider that logging the QSO logs FSK441 so this is going to be a major

Thanks.

Re: [Dx4win] Comment on Version 9

2017-10-21 Thread Dennis Petrich
I guess I have to echo Johns comments. V9 didn’t do a couple of things that
would help with my Flex SDR radio but it does do 4 things I wanted and find
valuable.

1. Automatically logs onto the cluster.
2. Accepts QRZ and other on line services for address and call info.
3. Provides for easy updates, even though Jim’s update program was a snap to
use.
4. Window positions not moving, I use the iTunes skins and now they stay put,
very nice.

Obviously each person is entitled to their opinion. It is true that 9.01
does not add any revolutionary features. However, there are many of us
that have used DX4Win for a very long time and enjoy how the software works.
It is easy to use and we know it well. Version 8 was getting old and was
missing some key features that have evolved since Version 8 was published.
Version 9 solves my concerns with Version 8 and adds some very nice
features. I was not expecting or wanting a revolution - I wanted DX4Win to
be modern and up to date - thank you Paul for doing exactly that. $35 is a

Hi,

Well I can fully agree waiting for a new version, I'll do it too.
But and a big but is what has or will be done.  Many a program's so called
"update"  with a new version has turned out to be a "downgrade" so lets hope
that is not the case with DX4Win.

I maybe also be a  Luddite too not wanting to upgrade.   I still
keep an old DOS ( DXLOG) program current with just QSL's received as I like the
summary printouts far better than the DX4Win versions.

I'll wait to see what comments appear about the new version, if it
ever appears.    More than once all being on the cutting edge got me was being
hacked up.

2017-10-13 Thread Dennis Petrich
Yes, I have stuck with DX4WIN for the same reasons…

I hope Paul is able to add capability to better support the newer SDR radios
like Flex. There are a couple minor changes that would allow DX4WIN to
integrate smoother with that type of radio. If Paul is interested I’ll
elaborate….

The subject says it all. A group of users have been testing the next
release.

Among the many changes, this version will support new modes and sub-modes.

I will share more information when the release date approaches. There is
still plenty to do, especially the documentation and the website needs more
work.

Stay tuned,

Hi Jim, yes it was off screen and thank you. The box was checked all along
so I changed the screen shot scale factor from 80 to 70% and got the packet
window back.
So your clue that it could be off screen was the right direction.

could the window be off-screen?

File | Preferences | Screen

Check the box leave all windows in original position. Then save and
re-start DX4WIN

See if that fixes it.

Well,

It's working now I got on the phone with Harry, W0LS, and in the
process of going through all my preferences, which were the same settings he
had, I pressed the settings tab in VE7CC and noticed I had checked the
skimmer button... The long and the short of it is, by having the
skimmer button checked I was defeating the reject filter feature in

So, with a little egg on my face it looks all is finally well in MN.

Thanks to all of you who tried to get me straightened out.

If it still doesn't work, I suggest you try the VE7CC reflector at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ARUser/

Someone there should be able to help.

If you are running Windows Vista or later, and have the VE7CC software
installed under Program Files, you may have issues with file
protections. So although things seem to be working for you, you may
not be able to change your settings.

Dennis,

Once you have confirmed that VE7CC is talking properly to DX4Win per Jim's
note below, there is one extra step I forgot to mention.

There is a small box on the lower left in the Reject Announces/Dx Spots
window called enabled, Be sure that box is checked.

Also, make sure you are using the latest version of VE7CC.

If your VE7CC software is talking properly to DX4Win, it should work just
fine. I have multiple installations of VE7CC/DX4Win running on multiple
PC's and they all work fine.

Dennis, are you sure DX4WIN is connecting to the CC User client
program (usually localhost:7300), and not your normal DX Cluster node
directly? Otherwise, any filtering you do in the VE7CC client program
won't change what you see in DX4WIN.

Personally, I like the LPL spots for a number of reasons. But if you want
to block them, use VE7CC.

Click on the configuration Tab (upper left)
Click on Reject Ann or Dx Spots
Enter W3LPL in the Spotter box
Click Add
Click Exit

You'll never see an LPL spot again

I for one don't care if LPL exists, I would just like to block it in DX4WIN
or VE7CC. Has anyone found a way to block in VE7CC that works? I add it to
the block list and they still come through.

Hi Barry - I really don't know why Frank does it. It has been running

I have been corresponding with Frank off and on for a couple of years
about this. Here's an explanation of how hisspots are generated,
from December 2011. The only change I know of since then is the
addition of a heard in [state] comment earlier this year:

Automated CW DX spots from W3LPL are produced by custom software
that monitors the DX spots from the Reverse Beacon Network, a global
network of CW Skimmers. There are no radios involved except at the
approximately 50 CW Skimmers that originate the DX spots sent to the
 RBN.

Core to the software is a list of one thousand rare and semi-rare DX
callsigns. Each callsign has an appended DX spotting rule that
specifies the bands that should be spotted for that callsign and the
re-spotting interval (typically one to three hours).

When a DX spot is received from the RBN, it is compared to the list
of 1000 calls. If there is an exact match, the software then waits
for a second RBN spot of the same exact callsign. If one or more of
the spots originated from a CW Skimmer in the USA, the DX spot is
sent to the DX Cluster network as specified by the DX spotting rule
appended to that callsign. If neither RBN spot originated from a CW
Skimmer in the USA, the software continues to search for an RBN spot
for that exact callsign from a CW Skimmer in the USA. If within ten
minutes it receives a DX spot for that exact callsign from a USA CW
Skimmer a DX spot is sent to the DX cluster network, otherwise it
times out and no spot is sent.

Most CW Skimmers use a Quicksilver QS1R SDR, covering seven ham bands
simultaneously. My QS1R is fed by my transmit monoband phased arrays
on 40 thru 6 meters, and by my Beverage antennas on 160 and 80
meters. Please send me an email whenever you see a bad callsign
spotted by W3LPL. That always means there is a bad callsign in the
 list of 1000 calls! tks

[Dx4win] DX4WIN and Flex 6500 not connecting

2013-07-14 Thread Dennis Petrich

worked for years with the Flex 5000A and DDUtil... I’m stumped as to what’s
going on and need someone from Flex and/or DX4WIN to take a quick look at
why DX4WIN is not talking the lingo required for the 6500’s CAT server

2013-07-14 Thread Dennis Petrich
Well, thank you Bob,

It’s working if I bring up a second slice with VFOB as you discovered I
wonder if there is someway for ‘SmartSDR’ to provide a place holder number
for VFOB when it’s not open or ask DX4WIN people to change it to look for
VFOA instead of VFOB??

Again, thank you Bob and Klaus!!

Dennis,

Sorry it took so long for me to get a chance to look at your problem but I
think I've found the answer.

DX4Win immediately looks for the frequency of VFO B (the FB command) it will
try six time, and if it doesn't get an answer, it times out). I'm not sure
exactly why DX4Win is dependent on VFO B being there but it is. I don't
know if this has something to do with how the radio profile (in DX4Win) is
generated, I opened up the DX4Win FlexRadio.rig file but his acronyms don't
mean anything to me so I can't decipher what is supposed to happen.

I created a second receiver on the 6000 (before starting DX4Win) and
everything ran smoothly. I can read both receiver frequencies and set split
mode from the DX4Win Radio Frequency Control panel. The only CAT command
that the Flex6000 is not responding to is RC (reset the RIT frequency) which
is not available currently in the radio. CAT responds with the correct
error message and DX4Win seems to accept it.

So, I guess the fix is to always have a second receiver running, either in
the same panadapter or another one.

used with DDUtil and my Flex5000A...

I get the failed to connect message

It sounds like some file didn't update correctly, like the URL was not
found.

I don't know which file it is, however, see if you can find out by
examining each one in the UPDATE directory, looking for this xml
version text at the top.

I just ran the update myself and did not have any problems.

[Dx4win] Antenna Beam Heading display

2011-11-06 Thread Dennis Petrich
I'm wondering if the DX4WIN developers have ever been asked to display on
the great circle map the bearing of the current beam heading with a
translucent bandwidth of +/- 25deg from the center of the beam heading (3ele
beam BW).

That way the operator could see at a glance if he/she had to move their
antenna to a DX spot of interest.

So let say the beam heading is in a translucent yellow or some other color
that would allow map data to show through pretty well and the DX spot red
line would still bounce around on new DX spots and the OP wouldn't have to
do the math in the heat of the moment to see if his beam was close enough.

This adds Antenna Beam Heading display to already long list of features
for DX4WIN.

If this has already been suggested that's OK

Hello all,

I just linked all my contacts in LoTW to get DXCC award. I don't have any

Now this morning I see in DX4WIN the Reports DXCC and Award flags and
Award buttons. Did I make a booboo by doing it from LoTW instead of from
DX4WIN?? Or can I download the ARRL results back to DX4WIN to synch the two
up??

So, is this an irrecoverable booboo or do I need to even worried about it?

[Dx4win] Upgraded to 8.0.5 and have conformation discrepency?

2011-10-03 Thread Dennis Petrich
Hello all, I need some quick help…

I just upgraded my DX4WIN from 7.0.3 to 8.0.5. I just copied my old log
file into the new directory and started 8.0.5 and set it up my preferences
and all seemed OK until I looked at my DXCC summary and noticed the CW
confirmations was 118 instead of 144 which it had been in 7.0.3. All the
other totals were exact or close to exact.

I also ran the latest DX4WIN Data Updater, with no errors, but nothing
changed with respect to the CW confirmations.

So, what did I do or not do that caused the discrepancy??

[Dx4win] CW Keying

2011-08-09 Thread Dennis Andrews, F5VHY
I find the following a bit difficult to believe - but it seems to be the case!

After many years as a DX4win user - starting with v4 but currently on v7, I
decided to try CW keying from the program using LPT and the same connecting
interface as used for Wintest and other programs - i.e. pin 16 for PTT and pin
17 for keying.

It didn't work with the TX seeming to be permanently keyed while the message
was being sent. However, trying it on v4, v5 or v6, it works OK. A little more
investigation shows that pin16 and pin17 seem to be reversed from v7 onwards -
the same happens with v8.

I notice that the reflector shows many problems with CW keying but no apparent
resolutions.

Is it really the case that the pin drivers were reversed at v7 but never
corrected?

Dennis - F5VHY.

[Dx4win] Award credit

2010-10-18 Thread Dennis Andrews, F5VHY
A strange problem! I am loading some old logs into DX4WIN. I find that any QSO
before 1st June 1983 does not create any award credits. This is on v7.05.04 -
but I find the same effect on old versions of 6.02 and 5.03. But if I load the
log into v4.05 all the award credits appear.

I tried a test with setting up a new log on v7.05 and just entering one QSO.
With a current date, the DXCC credit appears. But if I then progressively
change the date back to 1983, the credit disappears when it goes back beyond
1/6/83. Same on v6 and v5 but OK on v4.

Anyone else come across this problem?

SH/DX to see the DX. dx4win knows my call sign, my name, my qth, I can tell
it what cluster I want, but maybe it already do this and I just don't know
how to use this feature??

So is there an automatic way to just bring up dx4win and have it
automatically connect to VE7CC ( or what ever dx cluster I previously
select)??

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dennis, k0eoo

I simply entered a dummy QSO last night, with N2OO as the manager, then
 deleted it.
New QSOs showed N2OO as the mgr.

Preferred:

Download most recent country file from http://dx4win.ad1c.us/

Lazy approach:

Just log a QSO, change the DXCC prefix to KP5, then all future
will log correctly.

[Dx4win] 99 % CPU Usage

2006-10-24 Thread Dennis Mowers
I am running DX4WIN on two computers, practically identical with the
same amount of memory.

One of them runs about 4-7% CPU usage with several windows open,
including WriteLog, along with DX4Win.

The other computer goes to 99% CPU usage as soon as I open DX4Win. I
don't even have to open a log file to see the problem. Packet windows
were opening, but I turned them off, and that was not the problem.

Has anyone seen this problem?

[Dx4win] 99% CPU Usage

2006-10-24 Thread Dennis Mowers
Problem fixed.

Thanks to all who replied.

I suspected the COM or LPT ports controlling the radio or Top Ten. I
removed those from DX4WIN Preferences, but that did not help. I also
set everything to do with packet to none, that didn't help.

Now, why did I do what is outlined below? Desperation.

I went to the device manager, and disabled all the COM, LPT, Network
adaptors, and several other things that I didn't think would stop the
computer. Then I re-enabled everything, and restarted the computer. I
had previoulsly restarted several times after trying a few things, but
this time the CPU usage dropped to 5%.

So, this is the HOW to fix it. The WHY is still a mystery.

Thanks,
Dennis-K5YA

[Dx4win] RTTY

2006-03-18 Thread Dennis Mowers
Does DX4WIN support FSK keying via a COM port?

I have it running with a sound card to MIC connection, but when I look
at the MMTTY setup Misc tab, the COM-TxD area is greyed out. It looks
like AFSK may the only way to run RTTY.

Thanks, Dennis

[Dx4win] Incoming Packet Spots -Switch BP Filter on LPT1

2006-01-18 Thread Dennis Mowers
What parameter do I have to set to keep incoming packet spots from
momentarily switching the band pass filter I have connected to LPT-1?

My Packet 1 prefernces are set to REGULAR and TCP/IP, for Telnet access.

The BP filter switches to the band the packet spot is on the when the
spot is received, and then back to the band the radio is set to on the
next radio poll.

Thanks,
Dennis-K5YA
