[Dx4win] Typo in QSL manager box
Hi Karl, I believe that if you go to the earlier (by date) QSO that you had and change the manager, it should change the manager for all QSOs that follow, until there's a newer manager entered. As an alternative, if you go to File-Databases-QSL managers, you can go to the callsign in question and just change the data there. I think that the manager is actually part of the QSO record, but is pulled from the database when displayed/printed/etc. Hope this helps. If I correct in one QSO, or just delete the manager's call, save the changes, etc., I still get the same manager's call because it's in all the other records, too. 73, Karl, K1KO 73, David - K2DBK http://k2dbk.com http://k2dbk.blogspot.com

Hi Jim, I couldn't find that font on my system, but a quick search turned up this page on the Microsoft web site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=22e69ae4-7e40-4807-8a86-b3d36fab68d3displaylang=en You can download the font from there, and it looks like this might be designed specifically for Visual Studio 2005, so that might explain why those of us who don't have VS don't have it on their systems. [Dx4win] Re: Programatically inserting County into DX4WIN files(Alan Zack)
Indeed. For instance, my zip code is 07675, which is listed officially as Westwood, NJ (where the main post office is located). However, I live in River Vale, and the zip code also covers Old Tappan. As it happens, the point where FN20, FN21, FN30, and FN31 meet is within this area, so you certainly can't tell your grid square from the zip code. A friend of mine gave out his grid wrong for a year or two because he took the value shown on qrz.com as correct. He got a new GPS one day, found that it would do direct readout in Maidenhead coordinates (grid squares), and discovered he was wrong. Oops. The QRZ grid info is automatically generated from, apparently, your stations's zip code (or town name?). In most cases, there are several small grids within each, so there is a good chance that the grid reported in QRZ is wrong unless people have calculated it themselves and changed the info. I imagine that there are many people out there that are reporting their own grids (over the air) that they just grabbed from QRZ.COM without confirming them, so you can't even be sure if what they send is correct! Since QRZ.COM is now the defacto reference for such things, everyone should make it a point to go there and update their info. Personally, I think that the grid square info on QRZ should default to blank and only report a grid square if we add it manually. If you can't depend on the accuracy of the data, why have it there at all?? Sorry, that's the scientist in me talking! When I log a USA station DX4WIN automatically goes to QRZ.com and looks up the station info for me and places it in the F3 Window. For example, on Veterans Day I worked some special events stations including K0AIR. As soon as I typed K0AIR into the Callsign window the following info appeared in my F3 window: K0AIR Strategic Air Command Memorial ARC Paul W Schleck P.O.Box 1292 Bellevue, NE 68005 Coord: 95.908W 41.149N Grid: EN21bd County = Sarpy USA If I am pleased with this info I press the UPDATE QSO button in the F3 window and this info is logged. The only time I have discovered a problem is in the CQP where people leave their home QTH and activate a county other than their home county. As noted, there is no guarantee that the QRZ.COM info is 100 percent correct as to county and grid info. [Dx4win] CW keying change in 7.01?
I recently converted from version 6.03 to 7.01. I noticed what seems to be a change (perhaps a bug) with CW keying. It seems that under this version, when I use the built-in keyer, PTT is behind triggered as well, which was not the case previously. System is Windows XP Pro, I have COM2 set up with PTT delay set to 0, DTR used for CW keying, and RTS for PTT. I know that setting PTT delay to a non-zero value is supposed to cause PTT to fire before CW keying, but that's not the case here. The net effect is that it makes the radio (Icom 756 Pro II) act like it's not in QSK mode (which it definitely is; using an external key confirms that there's nothing wrong with the radio itself). (I can hear PTT being keyed as I'm using a Rigblaster plus, and you can hear the relay click shut just before keying starts, and open when finished. This was not the behavior in previous versions.) I did a couple of tests to make sure that I wasn't missing anything: I turned PTT keying via RTS off, and the behavior returned to the old way. (Unfortunately, I need PTT to use PSK, so that's not a permanent fix.) I turned PTT keying back on, then turned CW keying via DTR off. When sending CW, PTT is engaged, but no CW is sent. I tried setting the PTT delay to a non-zero value, saved, then set it back to zero (figuring something was stuck somehow, but that didn't seem to change anything. None of my hardware has changed since I moved from 6.03, and indeed testing with that version shows correct behavior. I have migrated all my settings over, including the radio .RIG file, and have verified that all the settings are correct. Has anyone else seen this particular issue? Have I found a bug? 73, David - K2DBK

[Dx4win] LoTW exports
Here's what's confusing you: On most Windows systems (Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP), there is usually an application associated with a file type. For example, files that end in .XLS are normally Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Double-clicking on an .XLS file will load that file into a copy of Excel and start running it. As a side effect of this, often the application's icon will get associated with the file type. Closer to home, the .DXL filetype is associated with DX4WIN so it has the DX4WIN logo associated with .DXL icons, and double-clicking on a .DXL file will start up a copy of DX4WIN using that logfile. What's apparently happened on your system is that Writelog is the application associated with ADIF files (those that end in .ADI), so double-clicking the exported file starts a copy of Writelog, and loads in that file. That's obviously not what you want to do. Fortunately, the associated file type is only what amounts to a suggestion, so you can load an ADIF file into anything that will accept it. What you want to do here (and as someone else already suggested) is not to double-click on the exported ADIF file, but to start your copy of TQSL, and tell it to sign the already-existing ADIF file. That will result in a .TQ8 file, which is what gets sent to the LoTW for processing. You can't just upload a plain ADIF file, it needs to be signed and compressed first. If that previous paragraph didn't make sense to you (especially the part about running TQSL), you should go to www.arrl.org/lotw and check out the Getting Started link, which will hopefully get you on the right track. (If you're really stuck, email me off the list and I'll try to walk you through the steps.) [Dx4win] LOTW Test
I had a similar problem with PSK...for some reason, while most of my PSK contacts are in the log as PSK31, a couple (probably manually entered) said PSK. I went into the log and changed those. There are still some modes that aren't supported (like PACK), so for testing, I excluded those from my upload. I found that I got very quick answers from Jon Bloom at ARRL when I sent him questions and comments at [EMAIL PROTECTED] My one overall comment to everyone is to keep in mind that this is beta software, meaning that there are some problems, and they seem to be aware of that. At 11:54 AM 5/17/2003, Joe - WL7M wrote: I just submitted my log to the ARRL LOTW, and ended up with these errors. About half of my log went through OK before hitting the maximum number of allowed errors. Looks like there needs to be a few automatic corrections in DX4WIN which happen should you elect to submit your log to the LOTW. I'm sure there will be an option forthcoming - perhaps after the beta testing is over - that will make that happen. 73, Joe WL7M 73, David - K2DBK

[Dx4win] Additional Search Features
There's a freeware logging program called logconv (you can download it from http://www.qsl.net/ka5wss/logconv/ ) that will convert ADIF input files (which DX4WIN can generate) and many other types of input to Cabrillo and a bunch of other output types. I played around with this recently and while it doesn't do a perfect job, it gets it close enough so that for a very casual contest effort (such as some of those previously described), you'd get a log that you could submit. You'd likely have to do some relatively minor editing to the log file before sending it in, but it's certainly better than building a file by hand. At 09:56 PM 1/25/2003, Gary McConville wrote: Steve, I too am just a casual contester but would like a few cabrillo formats supported that could be modified in word/text format for the other contest parameters. Gary - WB4SQ --- Joe - WL7M [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks for your clarification, Steve. Seems that what should be understood is that when I, as a DXer, participate in a contest, I'd just like to send in my log with as minimal fuss as possible. I've won contests for my section/state with as few as 5 QSOs. That's pretty casual. Yup - they are contest specific. Sure would be nice if there was the option to have at least a few major contests supported. My 2 centsYMMV. 73, Joe WL7M Hello all, You fellows need to understand that 'casual contesting' is geared toward the DX'er who is in a contest for new band and mode countries, with the focus on DX'ing, not contesting. It has nothing to do with contesting for the intent of contesting, at what ever level, but solely in support of the DX'er. Also, Cabrillo is not a 'one size fits all' thing. It is a contest specific format. Go to http://www.kkn.net/~trey/cabrillo/qso-template.html and you will see what I am saying. At a minimum, there are 8 different formats. Although the date, time, mode, band info is stable, the rest of it is all over the place, depending upon the contest. It may be a different story if it was one specific file format, such as ADIF. But, even then, time permitting. If you need contest support from the contest perspective, get a program that's main purpose is contesting. I understand there are even one or two good ones which are freeware, which may be worth looking into. When I'm contesting, I use Writelog. 73 de Steve, NR4M --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I've been using $$ for quite some time but I've never seen the split frequency entered, either when using an Icom 706MkIIG or an Icom 756 Pro II. The Main VFO frequency is what's always there. Is there something else that needs to be done to get the split frequency to be entered (if split mode is in effect) as well as the main frequency? [Dx4win] 756ProII rig file
Greg, Thanks a million! That worked perfectly. I am curious though: Where did you find that tacking the 01 (or 02 or 03) would set the filter? I checked the manual, and the only thing I could find was that 06xx would set the radio to mode xx (which DX4WIN does a fine job of inserting). There's (apparently) no mention of specifying the filters that I could find. (I'm wondering what other tricks might be out there.) 73, David, K2DBK At 11:52 PM 7/27/2002, Gregory Brown wrote: David, I'm using an older version of DX4WIN and am using the IC-775 radio file with my IC-756 PROII, but this command should work for your setup, too. To get DX4WIN to call the wide CW filter (filter 1), change the Set Mode command string to 060001FD. This will call the wide filter for SSB, too. I like to have the radio go to wide filter when clicking a spot, because the frequencies for spots are sometimes not highly accurate. If you would rather call the medium or narrow filters (for some reason). use the command strings 060002FD and 060003FD, respectively. Greg KT0K
[Dx4win] Telnet via Cable Modem Timeout
I have the same problem, and I'm sure it's not RF-related, since sometimes when I've gotten disconnected I've been out of the shack (and not transmitting!) for some time. There are a couple of things to consider here: First, the Internet is not guaranteed to be 100% reliable to all locations (or in fact, generally speaking, to any locations) for the kinds of things we're talking about. There is a lot of infrastructure between your computer and the telnet cluster itself, and depending on a lot of things (more appropriate to an Internet Infrastructure reflector than here, so I'll skip that stuff), if any one of those little pieces shuts down you may loose your connection. The second thing is that it's possible that some clusters require some activity on the end-users part to keep the connection up. This is not just a response to a low-level connectivity check, but actual user input. The reason is that if the cluster has limited resources (memory, CPU, etc.) they might not want to keep lots of inactive users connected. I don't run a telnet cluster, but I'd be curious to hear from anyone who does as to whether they've got an inactivity timer available on the telnet connection to timeout inactive users. FWIW I have the same timeout problem as the others and it is definitly _not_ rf related because it only happens at a computer in my house which is 200 yards from the shack. The shack is not operational at that time, therefore no rf. The shack uses a two meter line which is rock solid. This would dismiss rf as the culprit for most timeout problems. 73, David - K2DBK
[Dx4win] SWL labels
Ok Paul, thanks. I guess that makes sense. I didn't know what the SWL rules for QSL'ing were, I wanted to make sure that I didn't short-change the guy that I was sending the card to. [Dx4win] SWL labels
I got a couple of SWL cards via the buro recently. I marked a QSO for SWL confirmation (via control-F2) and entered the SWL number. When I print (preview, actually) the label, I don't see the Callsign listed on the label. On the label, I see SWL: NL 12345 R89 (the SWL number that I entered), and then the regular contact information, but the call of the other station in the QSO (i.e., the one that I worked) isn't shown anywhere on the label. My two questions are: A) Should the other station's callsign be on the label, and B) if so, how do I get it there (other than resorting to using a pen!) Thanks 73, David - K2DBK
[Dx4win] New user with many questions
I'll take a couple of easy ones: For the KG4 calls that aren't in Gitmo, the K5K call that isn't US, and the Hawaii calls that are in KY FL (my personal favorite is the Alaska call in Louisiana): If you pull up those calls, in the Prefix field, just put in the correct real prefix. For example, for the KG4xxx calls, put in K, for K5K put in KH5K, etc. You can also fix those when entering by preceding (or following) the call with the correct Prefix, though I believe that if you put it in the Prefix field, it will be remembered for future uses of that callsign. One more I'll take a crack at: Regarding the buro cards, you do have to search, but the handy-dandy F2 key makes things much easier. If you go into File-Preferences, select the F2 Key tab. You can set the F2 key to mark the card as confirmed AND flag it for printing, and even whether to go direct, buro, etc. One handy tip someone told me is to make a scratch copy of your database, and play around with the functions on that one. If you mess something up, you can go back to the original log, save yourself another copy, and move forward from there. Good luck! At 11:06 PM 1/27/2002, William Hinkle wrote: 3. Hawaii calls that are in KY,FL? 4. KG4 calls that are in 4 land not Gitmo? 5. It told me K5K was a State Side call, how do I fix that? 7. I have about 600+ buro cards to take care of. How do I find each one of those QSO's to mark it as confirmed and to print a label? Do I have to do a filter for each one? 73, David - K2DBK
