[Elecraft] AX1 today

2022-09-24 Thread Dan Presley
All this discussion about the antenna caused me to carve out a little time this
afternoon to go to a suburban summit. Perfect setting for the AX1 as there’s no
good trees and since it’s also somewhat of a park -wires around and in the air
are frowned on. Also with limited time a quick setup and tear down is
important. My usual setup is a small lightweight tripod (light stand) that goes
to 6 feet and elevated radials (3 13’). I have alligator clips on the end of
the radials for easy attachment to anything like some grass or a shrub. ATU in
the KX2 hardly ‘clicked’ for a match. In 45 minutes I worked 22 stations (12
states),Japan and 4 ‘S2S’-summit to summit contacts on 20 and 15 M CW 5 watts.
Best report was 599 from OK..almost pulled off an S2S with JH3PLL. Kept asking
‘N7??’ but we couldn’t quite pull it off. And everything except the tripod
packs into a small LowePro bag. Summit W7O/WV-099 if you follow that. Thanks
for a great product Wayne.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 MacOS M1 Mini

2022-09-24 Thread Rick Tavan
Actually, I've run YCCC SO2R Box and SO2R Box Utility on Win 11 ARM Preview
under Parallels Desktop on a Macbook Pro M1 Max without recompilation. They
talk politely to the hardware across a USB connection. However, they expect
two pairs of virtual COM ports to communicate with the logger (N1MM in my
case) via OTRSP. My old standbys, vspMgr and COM0COM, do not work in that
environment. However, Eltima has a Virtual Serial Port Driver in an ARM
version that works very simply and cleanly.

Please note that the current Windows-11 ARM OS that can be installed by
Parallels 18 on a M1/M2 Mac can indeed run INTEL-based Windows Software. I’ve
been using it for several months to run INTEL software for railroad signal
monitoring (ATCS) and it works seamlessly. There was no problem transferring
program files from a Dell Latitude machine and having the software run without
modification.

Consequently, even though there may not be an ARM version of a Windows software
package, it may still be possible to run it under Windows ARM using an
INTEL-based Windows package.

That said, there is one caveat: Windows ARM does not currently support
natively USB devices other than such as items as Keyboards, Mice, Trackballs,
etc. For example, I cannot run a SDR device on the ARM because the device
drivers don’t exist under ARM needed for SDR: I use ZADIG to add drivers for
SDR and it doesn’t work running Windows 11 ARM.

I suspect that USB support for ARM will grow under time, but it remains to be
seen whether software that uses USB attached devices that require special
device drivers will work. In my case, this means using data sources available
via the internet rather than using a SDR device for over-the-air reception of
data. For example, I can use data collected via SDR attached to my Dell laptop
and feed that data to Apple MBP M1 laptop running Windows 11 ARM via LAN to
display the data.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2022-09-24 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Happy autumn.  I hiked around today scouting out the next few loads
of firewood.  I did not get a spider web in the face, it's not cool
enough for that yet, but single strands crossed the trail.  I collected
wood this week and found splitting it counteracts hours at a keyboard.
I stand a little straighter now.

The sun is covered with spots and is fairly active.  There are some
auroras so there will be QSB and noise.  A few thunderstorms will add
another note.  As the sun angle changes forty meters will change a
little more, I may reach farther east.

Please join us on (or near):

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

[Elecraft] Portable antenna

2022-09-24 Thread Dan Presley
Thanks Dave for the reply. That sounds like a great antenna and I’d definitely
like to see a picture and maybe a bit more description if you’d care to. I
enjoy playing with portable antennas and might try to build something like that
over the winter. One that I put together last year was a two element vertical
Yagi based on the article by a Japanese ham (forgot the call) in QRP quarterly
a few years back. It uses a driven element and a quarter wave reflector, and the
reflector uses a quarter wave matching section connected as a radial. Think of
basically a ‘U’ shaped setup. The original was suspended from tree branches but
I set it up for ground mount using two 20 foot small fiberglass fishing poles.
It actually gave some reasonable gain on 20 and you could steer it a bit by
moving the reflector.
For field day our club is QRP CW and two of us built a 2 element wire Yagi for
40 from an article in QST a few years back. We feed it with open wire line and
because our site has very tall trees we have it up about 60
feet. This year we set it up as a sloper. Killer antenna on 40 and actually
loads and works quite nicely on 20 and 15. We also put up a horizontal loop
for 80 at the same height. We’ve either won or placed 2nd in our division for a
few years. Nothing beats big wire, but when I’m hiking I gotta rethink
everything and go small-thus the AX1/2 and simple wires.

[Elecraft] K3 has ticking sound

2022-09-24 Thread Ed Cole

I thought this might be of interest:

I use my K3 for digital modes which requires a USB/RS232 conversion
cable. A couple years ago my FTDI cable quit working and also one I
bought locally would not work.

I had a Western Mountain Nomic soundcard which came with a Prolific
cable, so I tried it with my K3 and it worked (for awhile).

The computer would shut off the com port after running about 4-hours,
and only way to restore was to plug into a different USB jack (and
different com port).

Then, lately, my K3 would begin ticking whenever the computer was turned
on. It sounds like a mini relay being switched 2x per second. Radio
ticked whether turned on or off. Only went away if I pulled the com
cable or shut down the computer. Almost had me wondering if Elecraft
installed timer.

My first thought it was PTT being toggled, but PTT works normal even
with radio ticking. I could not find anything being affected as far as
the radio functions.

So I reasoned the problem was the cable and ordered a new KUSB cable;
arrived two days ago. It works fine and no ticking.

PS: see my use of the Nomic with the KX3:

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 MacOS M1 Mini

2022-09-24 Thread G4GNX
I’ve been running Parallels on my MBP M1 since I got it and it’s never slowed
anything down. I use Windows 11 for writing C++ and programming STM devices.
The main thing I don’t like about Windows 11 is that useful things such as
Delete are in a sub-menu, rather than a straightforward right click. That and
the lack of a proper delete key.

I won’t be using HRD or any other program that refuses to go with the times.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 MacOS M1 Mini

2022-09-24 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
About a month ago, I upgraded from an old (2015?) Intel i5-based MBP to the
new M2 MBP, and was able to migrate everything over to it seamlessly by having
the M2 import all of my bits from the TimeMachine backup. I've been using
RUMlogNG for years, and it works nicely with both WSJT-X and JTDX
*simultaneously*, with WSJT-X driving the upgraded K3 (near-K3s) operating with
the KXV3B on 630m and JTDX operating the K4D on the HF bands. I do not have
RUMlogNG do any rig control for me, however.
I have 24MB of memory in this MBP, but I was operating with 16MB on the old MBP
just fine. I had a 250GB SSD on the old MBP, but splurged for 1TB on the M2.
However, I think you should be able to get by with 16/250 on an Apple Silicon
based machine unless you're planning to watch a movie or edit video while
you're working the bands :-) One trick that I pull is to have a separate
partition on a large USB drive (which is primarily used for TimeMachine) to
keep less-needed files, as well as the log files generated by WSJT-X and JTDX.
I simply created a symbolic link in the files for those two apps to point to
the right places on the USB drive.
Only fly in the ointment I've encountered is that I run Parallels and it
upgraded to the latest version and then installed Windows 11 ARM for me. I
haven't played with it yet, so I don't know how much it will bog down the
system. *BUT*, be forewarned that Ham Radio DeLuxe is Intel-only and flatly
told me in their support forum that they do NOT intend to make an ARM64 version
for Windows 11. I only use HRD as a backup log program to review my awards
standing (e.g., DXCC, WPX, etc.), and now do so on my Intel-based iMac, but I
plan to retire it eventually. I've never used it for rig control, etc.
I also had a minor problem porting 'flaa' to the new system, and had to forage
for an as-yet unreleased version and compile it myself. But, once I did, it
worked beautifully. Also, I was able to use the latest versions of
nanovna-saverwith my nanoVNA-F, by doing a 'chmod +x' one time to make it
executable, but I do have to invoke it from a command line in Terminal, and it
takes a while to start up, even though I have the latest Python version
installed.
I have not updated to Ventura yet, either - simply too busy doing other/fun
stuff - but I'll be happy to assist as best I can.

year has been contacted that their K4 is about to ship or has shipped, etc.

Keep watch on that date. It changes as they build and ship more K4s. Since
you ordered in July, you have about 3 month’s worth of orders ahead of yours.
I don’t know what the translates to in terms of an ETA, but it should not be
real long (as compared to some of us who ordered early and waited 2+ years, but
that’s another story…)

In case you are wondering, yes, it is absolutely worth the wait.

:-)

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest K4 order/shipping status

2022-09-24 Thread Jeff Cathrow
Can someone explain Elecraft's K4 order/shipping status please?

I don't understand what "K4 Group 3 orders have been emailed through 4/15/22"
means, exactly.

I ordered a k4 on July 31st but was never told what "group" I was in. Does
this mean I must be in Group 4 because I haven't been emailed at all yet? I
suppose that also means my order will be filled after 4/15 at the earlies,
too---correct?

I just want to have an idea without bugging the nice folks at Elecraft if I
don't have to...

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 MacOS M1 Mini

2022-09-24 Thread G4GNX
I started using a 2012 MacMini a short while ago, after my elderly Win7 PC
sound card failed and it wasn’t worth fixing. The difference between my setup
and your proposed one is that I have updated the MacMini to a server style 1TB
SSD and more memory, so that I can leave it running 24/7 without worrying. The
other thing I’ve done is to bootcamp it and I run Windows 10 on it. The reason
for this is so I can run Log4OM which is a Windows based program and I believe
that the MacMini USB capability is far more reliable and stable, even when
running Windows. It’s been running without issue so far with my K3S, even with
2 screens, but unfortunately programs like HamClock won’t run correctly, which
I believe is because the author has made ‘illegal’ screen writes.

TBQH I don’t think that the expense of an M1 MacMini is justified for shack
use, unless you’re going to double it up for apps that need that sort of speed
and memory.

I will probably ditch Log4OM sooner or later, due to unfixed bugs and the fact
that it uses OmniRig for CAT control. OmniRig only allows 2 rigs to be
connected and I want more than that. If/when I do change my logging and CAT
control, I’ll then have the choice of using it in Mac native mode or Windows or
both. In fact I slipped up and took out a 2nd version of Parallels for my
MacBook Pro by mistake and I may well install the 2nd iteration on the MacMini,
which makes it very convenient to run MacOS and Windows simultaneously.

Like you, I’m looking at logging programs, although of course I don’t know
whether our requirements are the same. I need CAT control via the logger for 4
rigs minimum and I need a really good net control section, database sharing via
Dropbox and ability to send QSO data to QRZ.com in real time.

I’m interested to know what you think of RumLogNG and any other logging
program/app you might be able to recommend.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 MacOS M1 Mini

2022-09-24 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
David,

I used a K3 up until about three months ago on my Mac Mini (intel-powered) with
no problems at all. The K3 was sold and now the Mini is connected to a K4D,
which also plays well on the platform. My Mini has 32GB on non-Apple Ram and
the hard drive (SSD) is 1TB. OS is Monterey 12.5.1

Like another poster, I used MacLoggerDX (MLDX) for all of my logging and
SkookumLogger for contesting - a great combination. Don at Dog Park Software
has been super quick answering any questions I have on MLDX, in addition to
providing quick fixes for some minor issues. Also, I have an IC-705 that shares
my four keys, antenna, and MLDX.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 MacOS M1 Mini

2022-09-24 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
The Elecraft radios play very well with Macintoshes. In fact, KPA500 code was
developed (and still maintained) on a Mac mini. The various Elecraft Utilities
for the K-Line work very well on macOS.

For general logging, be sure to check out MacLogger-DX. It is very well
maintained with lots of features. For contesting there are a few choices.
RumLog is one, but I prefer SkookumLogger from K1GQ. It is available (for
free!) on the Mac App Store. Of course WSJT-X plays natively on the system as
well for FT-4/8 and other weak-signal modes.

And, if you find you really need to run a Windows app, Windows plays very well
on Intel Macs using VMware Fusion (also free) or one of the other
virtualization systems.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft AX-1 Whip Antenna

2022-09-24 Thread Dan Presley
The other nice feature of the KX2 is the mini banana jack on the side of the
radio for attaching the counterpoise . It’s perfect for pedestrian mobile and
should you encounter some sort of snag it’ll pop out before the wire
breaks.Wayne can better comment than me,but I believe the resonance of the AX1
(or AX2 I presume) it’s not right within the 20M band, but close. The auto
tuner easily takes care of matching and as Wayne mentioned earlier compensates
for all of the other variables. Just a note that the AX2 is a single band coil
and can be modified for different bands. Plus it’s even a lot lower profile
than the AX1.
If you want to see some fun videos of using the AX1 directly attached to the
KX2 search on YouTube for HB9BZG-SOTA from the Swiss Alps!

[Elecraft] K3 PTT vs QSK

2022-09-24 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I'm working with a piece of accessory equipment that relies on the "Key
Out" (PTT) signal to switch my transmitting antenna from my K3/KPA-1500
to an SDR.  Am I right to assume, as appears to be the case, that when
the K3 is in VOX/QSK mode, the Key Out jack continues to behave as if it
was in PTT mode - that is, switching on before first RF and switching
off after the PTT delay has passed.  I may have missed it, but can't
find this in the K3 manual.

The wire drags behind you. This is why we sometimes call it a "dragged
counterpoise."

The wire supplied with the AX1, AX2, and AXE1 is quite slippery and unlikely to
snag on anything. I've dragged it between cacti in the deserts of New Mexico;
across serpentine outcrops along the Pacific coast; and though the urban
jungles of Belmont, California, bristling with spiky xeriscape.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft AX-1 Whip Antenna

2022-09-24 Thread john
I'm curious about your pedestrian mobile statement. What do you do with the
13 foot counterpoise, does it drag behind you when walking? I doubt that you
can make a QSO without it. Also with the 13 foot counterpoise, what 20m
frequency is the AX1 resonant on?

Dave,

This sentence says it all. Your experience and hamming is very different
from theirs. I've done a bit of both, in a pretty wide variety of
situations. Backpacking is VERY different, and that's part of what SOTA
is all about. And every setup I've done, and I've done very different
ones, applied what I knew about how stuff works to the specific problem
I was trying to solve. THAT is what ENGINEERING is all about -- it is
the definition of engineering. That was my day gig when I was working --
designing sound systems for specific uses for a specific space where
they would be used. It's not about using ideal principals to an ideal
problem.

W6GJB and I have set up QRP on ridge tops with a KX3, a wire taped to a
telescoping pole, and a suitable length of #22 laying on low brush as a
counterpoise. We worked four continents in 15 minutes. About 20 years
ago, I used a similar setup with a K2 on 30M in a suburban park north of
Chicago as part of a QRP night for our local club. I got through the
pileup to work a DXpedition. Photo is at the top of my qrz page.

One of things i enjoy doing is surveying a ham's QTH to help him think
about what antennas in what locations that can be rigged at HIS QTH,
with HIS restrictions, optimized HIS operating goals, and HIS budget.

Wayne did a fine piece of engineering for the AX-1. It's not the ideal
antenna for EVERY application, but it's a useful design for several
forms of portable operation, especially if the user has bothered to
learn enough about how antennas work to apply it intelligently.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft AX-1 Whip Antenna

2022-09-24 Thread David Gilbert

I haven't done much portable operation except for Field Day, and when I
do I have access to tall trees for some pretty good wire antennas ...
including wire yagis.

But I did make a portable vertical antenna that I can set up anywhere.
It uses four 4' long 1/2 inch diameter aluminum tubes that fit together
end to end, sitting on top of another 4' long 1/2 inch diameter graphite
rod as a base.  Four radial wires act as guys for the top of the
graphite rod, and four thin nylon lines act as guys about 2/3 of the way
up the vertical.  The radials and the nylon guys lead to the same four
stakes (or rocks, as the case may be).  I've timed myself and I can put
it up by myself in about ten minutes, and everything fits in a backpack
except for the five 4' lengths that I can easily carry as a bundle with
one hand as I walk.  It feeds very easily with the tuner in my KX2.  It
was of course designed for 20m, but I've also been able to get a good
match with the tuner on 40m and 15m.

I couldn't care less about pedestrian mobile, and it's no more hassle
for me to carry that antenna to set up somewhere than it would be to
carry a hiking stick.  The heaviest antenna item in the backpack are the
stakes.

I once set the antenna up on my deck and monitored PSK Reporter for FT8
signals on 20m over the course of 24 hours.  I got hundreds of hits
across the entire U.S., of course, but also dozens in Europe, dozens in
southeast Asia, a couple in Africa, and 8 or so in central Asia.  I can
send you the screenshot if you'd like.

Maybe some day I'll make a YouTube video of setting it up and making
contacts to see how far I can get with it.

This is why you need an ATU when using such antennas. The ATU can correct for

So that would lead me to believe that matching requirements for bicycle mobile
with a trailing counterpoise would be a moving target.

I haven't tried that myself but yeah, probably.

However, radios like the KX2 and KX3 are tolerant of dynamic SWR variations.
For example if you hit the ATU button at some point and the SWR goes to 1:1,
then walk (or bike) over varied terrain that causes the SWR To vary from 1:1 to
2:1, the radio won't complain. Only if the SWR gets really high will power
rollback occur.

Without the ATU, and using an electrically short/narrowband antenna, you might
see SWR vary from 1:1 to 10:1.
