[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2023-01-15 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

Propagation was fairly good.  QSB was both fast and slow while QRN
was low.  No thunderstorm noise is nice.  Weather reports were mild for
mid January.  Only a little snow.

I saw a doe browsing her way through between nets.  She was soaked
and did not look happy.  Wind storms have ripped lichen from the trees
so she was harvesting her fill.  It must have high food value because
they will clear an area of it before they eat anything else.

Love the shadow of the forest,
Love the wind among the branches,
And the rain-shower and the snow-storm,
And the rushing of great rivers
Through their palisades of pine-trees,
And the thunder in the mountains,
Whose innumerable echoes
Flap like eagles in their eyries;--

Good conditions on 80M tonight. Net control could hear all stations,
although a couple couldn't hear me, so thank you to the relays for
pulling them into the net!

Of note was the serial number of Don W4CBS's K4, 1120.
Anyone else heard any later serial number on the air, yet?

Hope to see you next week, and tell your friends!

2023-01-15 Thread john
Good advice, especially the caution on the keying current of older amps!
Also notice that Jim did not say to connect the ALC, just watch your K3
drive level.

Study the manuals for both units. For all the amps I've used (three
different Ten Tecs, an ACOM, both KPAs), Key Out from the K3 to Key In
for the amp was all I needed, but it depends on the positive/negative
logic of the amp. In a well-designed amp, the Key Input will drive a
transistor, so very little current. You may also need to set a longer
delay in the K3 do allow for the amp's T/R relay(s) to pull in. I
remember a longer setting being required for an Ameritron I encountered
at a contest multi, but that was from an FT1000MP. There's a menu setting.

[Elecraft] FTDX3000 and PowerCombo

2023-01-15 Thread DAVID GREEN via Elecraft
I have a Yaesu FTDX3000 and I am about ready to put in an order for the
KAT/KPA500 combo and the CBL-YAE-BKDA15 cable.

Right now, I have a mAT-30 tuner from Vibroplex. After having tuned all the
bands I use, the tuner recalls the setting from memory as I spin the tuning
knob. So, the relays click and clack and the tuner is ready before I transmit.

I’ve read the Elecraft application notes for interfacing Yaesu rigs to the
PowerCombo, nevertheless, I am not sure if the PowerCombo will follow the 3000
band and frequency changes prior to keying: looks like that is enhanced mode
which would not be available to me. So would I be operating in enhanced mode
or intermediate mode?

Since the 3000 has the BCD info available, doesn’t make sense to me that it
would not be enhanced mode? What do you all think?

Best,
David, W2MZ

I upgraded the relay in my AL-1200 which is faster but I still set the TX delay

I'm using VSPM, which K5FR provided free to hams.

It does not do port splitting if that is what you need, and it has
been a few years since I heard from him, but he was blogging as late

[Elecraft] K2 "serial" connector and PA KEY output (was: KPA1500 and K2)

2023-01-15 Thread Geert Jan de Groot
[Submitted this earlier today with a picture attached of "how I made
mine", however it seems the picture is causing the message to bounce, so
now sending w/o picture]

Is your K2 one with a PA Key out? If so, just an RCA cable and a coax
jumper.

If your K2 is a K2/100 then it will have PA key out as the KPA100
provides it. If your K2 is a K2/10 (without KPA100), then, to ponder:

On
https://ftp.elecraft.com/K2/Mod%20Notes%20Alerts/K2%20Amplifier%20Keying%20Circuit.pdf
there is an application note from Wayne on how to build a simple circuit
to get this PA KEY output. The application note suggests adding a small
PCB inside the K2.

Notice that the connector of the KIO2 ("do not connect a straight
through cable") has all the signals that Wayne's circuit needs. So, it
is possible to build this PA key out circuit on a small PCB that fits
inside the hood of a DE9 connector, the one that connects to the KIO2
connector.
Hence, it is possible to build a "KIO2 special cable" that houses the PA
KEY circuit, and also provides connectivity to pin 2, 3, 5 (only these
pins!) so that a RS232 device can be connected, and not make any change
to the K2 itself.

And there would not be a need to drill a hole in the K2 casing, find
place for Wayne's circuit - it all fits in the cabling that connects to
the K2, and, at the same time, protects the non-RS232 signals of the
KIO2 connector.

In my "special cable dongle", sharp eyes will see some deviations: I did
not connect the RS232 pins because my transverters don't need it, but I
did add a 3rd transistor (2nd 2N) and a LED to indicate when the PA
KEY circuit is activated. A red LED now lights when the K2 activates the
TX PA circuit.

And if you have done the Unspeakable and connected a RS232 device via a
full-wired straight cable, then you may find
http://folk.uio.no/sverre/LA3ZA/blog/K2/N0SS/k2_wrong_ser_cbl_damage.pdf
of interest. Note that updating a K2 to the "B" revision makes a number
of changes that, at least in theory, should reduce some of the damage
done. It is still best to NEVER make this mistake, though.

80M has been good at that time of the evening, with strong signals and
little QRN from thunderstorms these days.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE. I operated in the NAQP
CW contest yesterday, and found all bands 10M-80M open and full of CW
signals. Next will be the NAQP SSB contest. Hope the great propagation
holds out. SFI as we type this is 228 and the MUF and Boulder is over
30 MHz!

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

[Elecraft] Win4K3 - Virtual COM Ports on Windows 10

2023-01-15 Thread John Overbaugh
I'm trying to set up my KX3 on a new Windows 10 computer using Win4K3.
Has anyone found a satisfactory solution to com0com's test driver
issue? Windows 10 enforces signed drivers; because com0com is a test
driver Windows doesn't trust it. I don't want to disable secure boot
and allow unsigned drivers, so the work-around isn't acceptable to me.

Has anyone found a driver they like which creates virtual com ports?

2023-01-15 Thread Geert Jan de Groot

We will be increasing prices across all of our product lines at the end of
this month, on Jan. 31st.
Our on-line order forms will update with the new pricing at that time.
All orders placed with us -prior- to the increase date of January 31st will
be charged at the lower current pricing, even if they ship after the price
increase date.

What will the effect of the price increase be to the
long-rumored-but-not-yet-orderable-and-hence-I-cannot-order-before-jan31
KXIBC2, the new charger that allows charging w/o removal of the battery
of the KX2?
