[Elecraft] #3421 MCU problems?

2007-01-14 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Dear Elecrafters,

I had left my rig on over night, and this mornings ice 'storm' brought a few
strokes of unexpected lightning to the area. Now my K2 (with KSB2, KNB2, KAT2)
is constantly transmitting dits with both mic and key removed. I'm afraid it
might be the MCU. Is this problem 'resetable', (I can't seem to make any
buttons work while it is transmitting - and it IS transmitting - verified by
nearby receiver feeding K2 into dummy load), OR will I need to replace the MCU?

Thanks,
Daniel

[Elecraft] Mobile (semi)QRP with K2

2006-08-29 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I haven't been able to get on the air much in the last year, but I found a way
around it - a 40m hamstick on the car with my K2 at 10 Watts (I figure it's QRP
with the hamstick's efficiency) to and from work and occasionally in the
evening. Just about everytime I've gotten on the air, I've managed to squeek
out a contact. Sunday night was my first contact - California on 40m! Yesterday
I had a lunchtime contact with Chicago, and after work - another Chicago. Last
night - Missouri. This morning - Minnesota. Just about everyone has given me Q5
copy (I usually report Q3-4 because of engine QRN). Two of them even gave me s7
reports!

This has been a refreshing experience - and a reminder that any antenna is
better than no antenna. Oh, and - for what its worth - my hamstick isn't even
tuned for 1:1 on the low end of the band (it's more like 4:1 - but I let the
KAT2 handle it). So, even after everything that's NOT supposed to help (bad
SWR, short radiator, engine noise, sorta-QRP) ... I'm still getting out and
having a blast.

Sorry - just had to share the renewed enthusiasm for QRP.

Oh - and copying in your head isn't easy while driving - but it gives your
brain a good work out.

Re: [Elecraft] Battery use with QRP rigs - page updated

2006-06-12 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I've run NiMH's (2200 or 2400 mAh) from WalMart - using a 10 AA-cell holder
from Mouser. At 5W, I start getting the low voltage 'beep' in the headphones
after an hour or two of use. If I run at 1W, I figure I can get 4-6 hours
(enough for a short sprint). I haven't checked out the webpage yet to see what
sort of results you're asking about with regards to NiMH's. I switch to the
NiMH's after I pulled my KBT2 out. My NiMH's are outboard - attached to the
bottom of my K2 with velcro and have a very short lead to the back of the
radio. With one of those 15 minute charges, I can be fully charged in less than
an hour (10 cells, 3 charge cycles, 4 cells/charge cycle).

I've seriously considered the LiPo's as an option, but initial cost keeps me
with the NiMH's. I found a good site for those who want to tinker with them...

http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATSCategory=897

I have no financial interest in this company - I only found them while googling
for LiPo's a few months ago.

The only problem with the NiMH AA's ... in my house they often get snatched up
for another form of wireless ... the wireless gamecube controllers in the
living room.

Regarding the charging of LiPos: you are correct in that a dedicated charger

Missing from your analysis are NiMH batteries, which i believe to be a
viable alternative to LiPo cells. I don't have access to a West Mt.

An import consideration WRT to LiPo that you fail to mention is
charging requirements. LiPo has had problems with charging, sometimes
catastrophic. It is VERY important to follow the manufacturers
recommendations and use the proper charging equipment.

[Elecraft] Matching End-fed Halfwave with K2/KAT2?

2006-06-08 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I'm considering using an end-fed halfwave for Field Day, and I have an idea how
I might implement it, but need some technical assistance from those in the
know.

What I'd like to do is pick up a few toroid cores (one to break, one to lose,
and another to use) to build a simple transformer with a couple turns attached
to a short (2-3 ft) pigtail of coax going back to the K2/KAT2. I'm hoping I can
experimentally determine how many secondary turns to use for the halfwave side
of things. Will the KAT2 be sufficient to handle the 'fine tuning' after I
handle the major impedance transformation through the toroid? or will I need to
get my hands on an air variable to do fine tuning on the antenna end of the
pigtail?

Any ideas on how to best implement this would be greatly appreciated -
especially since I'll need to know which core(s) to buy this week so I can test
this out before Field Day.

If there's a cheaper way to do this using simple plastic pill bottles and air
wound cores - I can do that too ... but I also like to wind toroids ;-)

I'll probably end up with 1 or 2 antennas ... a 40/20/15 (40m halfwave), and
maybe an 80/40/20 (80m halfwave). I may try to orient these crosswise to
provide E-W coverage on 80/40/20 and N-S coverage on 40/20/15 - knowing that
both of these antennas will start producing interesting lobes on the shorter
wavelengths.

Thanks for any help this list generates...

RE: [Elecraft] Matching End-fed Halfwave with K2/KAT2?

Hi Don,

--- Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 I would believe that a W3EDP antenna - 85 ft. radiator with a 17 ft.
counterpoise wire would be just as easy to deploy as an end-fed dipole and
the KAT2 will handle it on all bands without the bother of the parallel
tuned circuit. You may want to consider that as an alternative.

Sometimes I just need someone to gently shake me back to reality... I've used a
W3EDP and it did fine as far as tuning it is concerned.

I wonder if there's a W3EDP style antenna that is 'bigger' for better
performance on 80m (maybe 170 ft) ? I guess this gives me a good reason to play
with EZNEC.

I did seriously consider the 1/4 wave matching stub (J-pole style), but then I
started to wonder if on 80m, I'd have to have 67 ft of 300 ohm twinlead spread
out along the ground ... or could I twist it up in a coil (is either of these
situations a good thing for a matching stub)? It just seemed to put me further
away from the antenna than I was envisioning, and I was hoping to use each
half-wave harmonically (3.5/7/14/21) and I believe the 1/4 wave matching stub
pretty much makes each one a mono-bander ... but - that's not bad - I'll just
have lots of fun making each end-fed halfwave for each band if I choose this
antenna.

... but what did I buy the KAT2 for? This is why the W3EDP is a perfect
combination for the K2/KAT2.

Why end fed? Because I plan on tossing the other end over the top of a tree or
two and I don't want to mess with feedline and branches.

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft DSP vs Audio Filter?

2006-06-02 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I'll chime in with my 2 cents...

I operate 99.9% CW. I bought the KAF2 before the KDSP2 was released. I
originally wanted the KAF2 for both the clock feature and the audio filter
feature (I had money then, and wanted as many features as I could get in my
K2/QRP). Now I seldom use either the clock or audio filter. If I use the audio
filter, I'll use it at the wider setting (AF1?) - the narrow setting I might
use for really rough conditions with wall-to-wall signals - but it generally
doesn't see much use. The clock - well ... let's just say that since I bought
my Casio G-Shock/Waveceptor/Tough Solar watch ... I get very accurate GMT/UTC
from my wrist now.

Would I buy the KAF2 now? Probably not - since the IF filtering does 99% of the
work. BUT - first filter setting does a very nice job of rolling off the 'hiss'
that you'll hear in a pair of stereo headphones ... so it does make it much
more comfortable for those that must operate for a long period of time. For
this reason - I'll be keeping the KAF2.

If I was interested primarily in SSB - I think I'd probably get the DSP for the
simple reason that it will handle noise reduction and filter out heterodynes
that always seem to be a factor in SSB reception.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 or K2-B (New Elecraft Products)

2006-05-26 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I'd like to see this K2-B (or K3 ... or K2X for K2-eXpanded) with two RF boards
so that you could do binaural/differential reception from two antennas
(horizontal vs vertical) - that way you could pick out nearly any signal that
is perceptible. Maybe create a larger case with the capability of adding a
built in 100/200/400 W amp to the rig and a built in ATU capable of handling
200/400W with a builtin balun. Oh - and a built in P/S. Make the case large
enough to be rackmountable (I don't know why just sounds cool - and maybe
even useful for EMCOMM). At least make the front panel 2-4 times larger than
the old K2 (adding more area to the top of the case for extra RF Amp, tuner
components, P/S, and 2nd K2 RF board).

Just thinking outside of the box for a moment...

Now we return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Funny you mention a K3. I was thinking about it this morning. After
using the K2 for a bit I find my need for a K3 to be less. The K2
does pretty much all I need. I have a lot of fun with it as it is. If
I want 100 watts I can add an option and I'm there.

But having a larger package, bigger knobs, real analog s-meter, larger
display, less menus (add an encoder or two that can be assigned to
control a few things) - these would be great changes. So here's my
 proposal for a K3.

Design a new display and control board that is larger and provides
larger UI features. Hook it up to the K2 RF board. Mount it in a
somewhat larger case. Voila, you have K3 - a base version of the K2.
While you're at it, put a larger rear heat sink on the 100 watt PA and
 have no fan.

These changes could be bought by K2 owners to allow a K2 to be changed
into a K3. Most of the existing options would be swap-able between the
 two versions of the rig.

 Maybe this isn't a K3. Maybe this is a K2-B (version B for Base).

Along those same lines - back about 10 years ago while trying to participate in

[Elecraft] OT: Help designing power supply and toroid transformer

2006-01-10 Thread Daniel Reynolds
This is slightly off topic - but since there is such a generous group of guys
that are very knowledgable in electronics (and since my brain is a little soft
in this area), I think I'll toss this request out and hope for the best.

First off - please reply off the list since this does not pertain directly to
Elecraft equipment (except that it might be fun to eventually take the same
design and build a larger p/s for the K2/QRP).

My goal is to build a non-switching, voltage regulated 9V/1.5A power supply
with enough isolation and filtering to keep RFI out of a Grundig Satellite 800.
My father has one of these radios, and so do I (unfortunately, he lives out of
state - so I couldn't compare the two radios and p/s side by side). When I
visited him over the holidays, I discovered that the OEM power supply my father
has is either producing RFI or is conducting RFI, because he can tune in
daytime AM/MW signals from over 100 miles away when running the thing on
batteries, but he has a hard time with signals beyond 50 miles away as soon as
he plugs the power supply into the outlet (this was AFTER we already turned off
the worst RFI generating offenders in the house).

The Grundig Sat 800 power requirements are spec'd at 7-10V DC up to 1 Amp
(530mA with 1/4W output and lamp off, and 830mA with 1/4W output and lamp on),
and it says in the manual that the supplied adapter is 9V/1.5A.

I've got an old 1987 copy of the handbook which I've got up in the attic for
reference, and I realize some of the basic things (from my license/testing
days) that go into a power supply (transformer, diodes, capacitors, inductors,
regulators). I want to actually build my own power supply from scratch -
starting with the transformer. If I'm not mistaken, I should be able to use a
medium-large toroid core and some heavy wire to do this.

[I could go down to Radio Shack and buy a wall wart, but I want to actually
make something that is going to work 'really well' in terms of reducing RFI
passing through the AC power supply - something that a cheap power adapter
probably won't be designed for.]

So - here's where I'm hoping you can help me with...

What core (size and material composition) should I use for transforming an AC
signal?

How many windings of what kind of wire would be the 'best' for the power
requirements of this supply?

Should I build a 120/12V transformer and voltage regulate it down to 9V, or
would it be better to simply build a 120/9V transformer and rectify the AC and
smooth it out with passive components?

How can I best filter out RFI being carried on the AC line?

Are there any other considerations I should be aware of?

Do you know of any helpful websites I should visit (I haven't googled this
topic yet)?

I'm sorry to waste the bandwidth of others here.

Any help supplied is greatly appreciated!

working a QRPp station), but I believe that the power multiplier applied to the
sending station is an attempt to:

1 - level the playing field ... someone running 100W is going to probably
garnish 10 times as many contacts as someone running QRP simply because the
signal is stronger everywhere
2 - encourage QRP operation ... although many of the kit builders and
homebrewers are serious low power op's, it is all too tempting to turn the
power up if there is absolutely no incentive to keep it down
3 - K.I.S.S. - if we had to individually count each contact with a different
value (10 for QRPp, 7 for QRP, ...) then it would become an exercise in
frustration for many folks who just want to get on the air, make a few dozen
fun contacts with likeminded folks, and submit a quick and easy contest report.

However, it might be an interesting study to see how much our scores will
differ if we calculated it in two ways: using my power for a multiplier, and
using all the other ops power for a multiplier.

My 2 cents...

It seems to me that a score per contact, rather than an overall

Let's face it, if I run 10 mW and you hear me, and come back to me with
a 100W signal, it is *you* that did the hard work digging my signal out
of the noise, not me doing the work of digging you out. I realize that
there is skill involved in timing and offset of the weak signal being
transmitted, but the receiving station ought to get higher score for
 that contact!

Thank God for the ever humble CW ops I enjoy bumping into both here on the
Elecraft reflector and on the CW/QRP portions of the band. I can't think of a
single inconsiderate CW op I've worked in the last 3 years since I've been
active with my K2. My wife also often peeks at my notebook (or laptop) as I
record what I'm receiving on CW. In my 20 years as a ham radio operator, I've
often had to tune away from a SSB 'conversation' gone bad, but I've never once
had to choose whether or not to write something down in the midst of a CW
contact because it might offend me, my wife, or our kids.

[Elecraft] Modify VOX sensitivity?

2005-09-14 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Is it possible to modify the VOX sensitivity (or reduce the ALC action) so that
an operator using PSK31 could run without a PTT relay, relying upon the VOX

I'm looking at the KSB2 schematic as I write, and it looks like the VOX and ALC
are tied together... but I'm not as well versed as many of you knowledgable

[Elecraft] Anyone try AA NiMH powerpack for K2?

2005-08-15 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Hi guys/gals,

I recently pulled my KBT2 out of my K2 (the battery hasn't been charged for
over a year after I abused it last summer by overcharging with an unregulated
solar panel). I've been operating over a year now on an outboard 'car start'
portable battery pack (12 AH) and have had very little trouble (I chose 12 AH
figuring that should be plenty enough to handle Field Day weekend). Because the
Spartan Sprints are keen on 'light weight', and with my 12 AH battery (and KBT2
installed), I usually weigh in around 25 lbs total, I decided to trim the
weight down and change my power source to a NiMH battery pack.

My local Radio Shack has (had?) the 8 AA battery holder for less than a buck
(it looked like an item that was no longer maintained in stock - but I could be
wrong) - and 8 AA 2500 mAh NiMH cells from Walmart for $17 (I found them at
Sams Club for $15), and I was well on my way to finding out how far those
little batteries would take me.

I don't remember exactly, but it appears that my weight is now under 5 lbs (not
really skinny - but no longer 'tubby' for the Spartan Sprint). I played with
the batteries during 2 hours of the NA CW QSO Party, and, except for the
incessant 'Low Batt' error, it worked wonderfully. I've since read about how
others have used the 10 AA battery holder from Mouser for the K1/KX1 rigs, and
I now have that part on order and will try that (hopefully) this weekend for
the QRP ARCI Memorial Sprint.

My questions for the group:

Is there any one using a similar power source?

Do you keep your batteries inside our outside the K2?

Do you charge your cells individually and replace them in the holder, or do you
charge the pack of cells together? If you charge them together, how are you
controlling your charge?

Does anyone know if Energizer's 15 minute battery charging technology is
generally 'beneficial', or 'harmful' to the batteries overall longevity?

Do you find yourself turning the power down when running from NiMH batteries,
and how much power do you run with the K2?

At what voltage will 10 NiMH cells be considered 'empty' (I'm guessing 1V/cell
- 10 Volts), and at what point will the K2's 'Low Batt' warning come on (I'm
guessing 10.5 Volts)?

Thanks in advance,
Daniel AA0NI

Re: [Elecraft] License Exam

2005-07-23 Thread Daniel Reynolds
As an inactive VE (active up to a few years ago), I understand that in order to
be a:

Technician, you must pass the Technician written exam.
General, you must pass all the above and the General exam.
Extra, you must pass all the above, and the Extra (and 5 wpm exam).

Having a license or a CSCE (Certificate of Successful Completion of Exam) is
all the proof you need that you passed an exam [CSCE's are only good for 1
year, after which, you must retest]. A CSCE won't be good for much if they dump
the CW requirement, because often times a CSCE would be filled out if a person
passed one of two elements required for a license (e.g. in the not so distant
past, a Novice had to pass the 5 WPM code and Novice written exam - pass one
and fail the other, and you would take home a CSCE until you could later pass
the other required element). It's been a long time, but I believe any one who
passes an exam receives a CSCE just in case their paperwork gets lost in the
system. They can hang onto the CSCE until their license arrives in the mail (or
is registered in the FCC's database).

A VE testing session usually started with the lowest numbered elements (2 -
Novice, 3a- Tech, 3b- General, 4a- Advanced, 4b- Extra) along with a separate
testing area for the morse code elements (1a - 5 wpm, 1b - 13 wpm, 1c - 20
wpm).

If you were unlicensed, and managed to pass the following exams, in order, 2,
3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 1c - then you could have walked out of that testing session
with the expectation of soon receiving the Extra Class license in the mail a
few weeks later. Nothing requires you to be licensed before you take the Extra
exam - however, I believe the VE's may require you to have passed the exams
that preceed the Extra exam before they will allow you to take the Extra exam.

My statements may, or may not, reflect the current state of VE testing exams in
the U.S., and they may, or may not, reflect your experience with testing exams
- and they are just a faint memory for me.

Daniel AA0NI
--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I believe that it is technically possible to be first licensed as an Extra
class under the current licensing system by passing all 4 elements at a
single volunteer examiner session and having the volunteer examiners submit
all the paperwork for the Extra class license to the FCC. A person never
having passed any FCC ham license test cannot take and pass only element 1
(code test) and element 4 (extra test) and receive the Extra license.
Perhaps a volunteer examiner could provide a definative answer.

[Elecraft] OT: Noise reducing earphones

2005-06-20 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Just a note that is slightly off topic:

For those of you looking for a way to reduce distractions while picking out
those weak signals from the ether. I picked up a set of passive noise reducing
ear 'plugs' made by Shure for about $100 from CompUSA (originally for my
palm/mp3 listening) and I'll have to admit, that they do a pretty incredible
job at knocking out environmental noise (my guess is in the range of 20-30 dB)
like a good pair of foam ear plugs. Also, the build quality on the cord, plug,
and Y are excellent with what appear to be solid strain relief.

For comparison, I do have a pair of 1st generation Bose 'quiet comfort'
headphones that are great for listening, and are excellent for low frequency
noise reduction (bus/airplane engines), but are susceptible to RFI (even after
using a couple chokes from RS to reduce RFI on the audio cord before the
circuit), but these newer ear plugs from Shure are about 1/3 the cost, have no
active circuit to be susceptible to RFI, and put no pressure on my ears or my
glasses. I've been able to comfortably wear the ear plugs for over 3 hours just
this morning while listening to music at work, and there is no discomfort to
speak of. Although my Field Day operation will be limited this year, these are
definately going to the field with me.

Just so you have an idea just how well these work - my wife was calling for me
in the house - and I had no idea she was looking for me until I 'saw' her come
through the door (with a less than pleasant look on her face). So - buyer
beware - these ear plugs might reduce too many environmental distractions.

Re: [Elecraft] Use of Abbreviations (OT?)

2005-06-14 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Not to further aggravate the off-topic-ness of this topic, but this discussion
reminded me of an experience I had about 10 years ago while traveling in the
Miami/Dade County area of Florida.

While scanning around with a 2m handheld, I found the local police/sheriff were
using nothing but Q-signals for their radio traffic. My best guess is that they
chose to use this to confound many of the non-ham types (i.e. CB-radio types)
who would be familiar with 10-codes.

I'm sure someone in south Florida could confirm this and give a reasonable
explanation for this.

[Elecraft] Elegant PSK interface (KPSK2)

2005-05-26 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Hi Everyone,

I'm curious if anyone has considered building a PSK interface into their K2
with a couple audio jacks coming out the back of the K2 (e.g. where the
transverter is supposed to go on my #3421)? What I'm thinking about is building
an interface that ties into the K2 (bypassing the front mike connection) with a
more sensitive VOX built in - and with line-level type audio input/output. My
aim is to avoid the messy cable situation I currently have with my PC laptop
where I must use a USB-serial adapter to key an outboard interface, and a bunch
of audio cables. Instead, it will be similar to the Ten Tec Argonaut V - and
only require two audio patch cords between my laptop and the radio - with the
rig being keyed by the built-in interface, and audio levels being controlled
only on the laptop.

Re: FW: [Elecraft] Power Supply Ferrite Beads.

2005-05-16 Thread Daniel Reynolds
My solution is similar. I use a sealed 12 AH gelcell 'jumpstart' battery with a
built in charger (paid $50 at AutoZone, but seen for as low as $40).

Here's a link to the Mity Mite:
http://www.batterychargers.com/details.cfm?prodid=PS%2D120Acatid=13

I leave it plugged into the outlet all of the time (float charge ... takes a
few days to top it off if I've drained it significantly). Sometimes I'll unplug
it to see if I'm getting much RFI from the charger - but it is usually very
little.

I went with a 12 AH because it should be more than enough for me to use for
Field Day each year with my K2/QRP.

Daniel AA0NI

p.s. No Hydrogen problem with this set up (that I am aware of).

p.p.s. I keep this in the bedroom underneath the student desk by the window I
operate from. If it was a real car battery or deep cycle battery - I'd probably
keep it outside, and run the power through the window/wall to avoid Hydrogen
because it can be a serious danger - even with a trickle charger.

Barring any earth shaking matters personally affecting me in the next 24-36
hours, I will be calling for check-ins tomorrow evening on 30m at 0100z. Look
for us on 10.107.2 +/- 2 kHz. The net will start at about 0100z, and will
hopefully not last any later than 0200z. For those of us who are UTC challenged
and are still dealing with daylight savings time - the net starts at
9E/8C/7M/6P.

Last week was interesting - I've unfortunately been so busy, that the notes I
took have remained unstudied since I closed last week's net that I haven't been
able to produce a net report (my fiance and I are working on finishing touches
to the house before she and her kids move into the house in May). Time outside
of work has been pretty much consumed in organizing, cleaning, and tossing
(that's the nice way of saying that I'm a habitual pack rat with no place to
store it all).

Oh - by the way - there won't be an ECN/30 on Thursday, April 28 (that's the
evening of our rehearsal dinner). Maybe it would be better to say that I won't
be calling the net that night - but folks can still congregate there and have
fun.

[Elecraft] ECN/30 - New UTC time

2005-03-30 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Just a reminder that the ECN/30 will be meeting Thursday at 8E/7C/6M/5P (0100
UTC Friday). I've moved to a later hour to accomodate for the later local
sunset (propagation). It will have the added advantage of allowing those who
live in the west to check in after they get home from work. We will try to keep
this 0100z time slot through the DST time shift this weekend - so next week, it
will be Thursday 9E/8C/7M/6P (0100 UTC Friday).

Due to the low power nature of the net (and net control), our frequency is
flexible. We will meet on 10.1x2.7 or 10.1x7.2 - depending on QRM. If we get
bumped off the frequency we started on, look for net control calling on
another.

Turn out has been pretty low for the last month. Hopefully with the later hour,
we'll have more folks check in.

Re: [Elecraft] ECN/30 - Frequency

2005-03-30 Thread Daniel Reynolds
--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
What does this mean for a frequency? - 10.1x2.7 or 10.1x7.2
 Mike, NJ2OM

Hi Mike,

Excellent question - and hopefully my explanation will make sense for you and
others who are curious. The 'x' in 10.1x2.7 and 10.1x7.2 can stand for any
number that results in a legal operating frequency inside the 30m band. This
means that ECN/30 could meet on any one of the following frequencies:

10.102.7
10.107.2
10.112.7
10.117.2
10.122.7
10.127.2
10.132.7
10.137.2
10.142.7
10.147.2

I've found that I've been run off the net frequencies I've picked on 30m a few
times, so to make it easier to find the net and avoid QRM - I took a hint from
another member on the elecraft list and decided to pick frequencies that aren't
cardinal frequencies (e.g. frequencies that end in 5.0 or 0.0 like 10.115.0)
where you are likely to run into non-QRP ops with less than sensitive radios
when compared to the elecraft kit radios.

The first frequencies I tried one week were just randomly picked - but when I
realized 5 minutes before the net that week that I didn't remember what
frequencies I posted to the list, I decided to just pick something that was
easier to remember. Since many elecrafters are QRP ops, I figured that 72 was
easy to remember - and likewise - 27. That's why the ECN/30 net can meet on any
of the 30m frequencies that end in 2.7 or 7.2.

Also - because it is easy to get run off a frequency when running a QRP net, I
want others to know that we can very quickly re-establish the net on another
frequency that is pre-determined - that's why there's more than one net
frequency - in case the frequency is in use - or in case a less than
'sensitive' operator, digital station, or DX/pileup runs us off the frequency
we are trying to use.

I hope this explains my reasoning and makes it easier for everyone to find the
net.

RE: [Elecraft] Should You Built It? Not necessarily

2005-03-30 Thread Daniel Reynolds
There are (at least) three types of people on this list:

- those who take pride in what they build
- those who take pride in what they operate
- those who take pride in both

Count me in the third category. I thoroughly enjoyed the building process, and
have no fear of having to dig into my K2 if I need to fix it. In fact, I had to
fix it about 3-4 weeks after I finished it succesfully because my PLL crystal
was flaking out. It is my only HF transceiver, and will continue to remain so
until Elecraft releases something even better.

Would I ever part with my K2? No - because I built it (I happen to be attached
to #3421). Unless I was in dire financial need, I doubt I'd sell it, because it
is about the cheapest form of active 'entertainment' I own. When I bought the
K2, it was with the intention of it being my only radio for a very long time -
and it can go just about anywhere I need to go - home, car-camping, picnic
table portable - and it is an ideal field day radio (my favorite activity).

My 2 cents,
Daniel AA0NI

[Elecraft] ECN/30 report

2005-03-25 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Last night, I ended up calling on 10.112.7 because I was hearing some
occasional broadband digital QRM on 10.102.7, and someone was calling near
10.107.2 just before the net started. The one and only check-in was Rick/WA3TUU
in Michigan.

Next week, I'm going to try calling the net one hour later (0100z -
8E/7C/6M/5P) to take advantage of the longer spring evenings and folks who get
home later. If this works well, we may end up transitioning to 0100z
(9E/8C/7M/6P) for spring when DST takes effect next month.

I will be calling for check-ins on one of the following frequencies:

10.102.7
10.107.2
10.112.7
10.117.2
10.122.7
10.127.2
...

If we get QRM'd - I will most likely move to the next clear frequency on the
list.

[Elecraft] ECN/30 tonight

2005-03-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Just a small reminder to let you know that ECN 30 will be on tonight. Due to
low power operating - becoming 'frequency agile' is helpful, so look for me on
one of the following, and if we get QRM'd, we'll move to the next frequency on
the list.

10.102.7
10.107.2
10.112.7
10.117.2
...

I'll start looking for QNI around z.

[Elecraft] ECN/30 Thursday evening - with a twist

2005-03-16 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Last week we were run off 10115 by a DX station and the ensuing DX pileup. This
week, we'll try to run ECN/30 with an interesting twist.

You will find me calling for QNI on one of the following 30m frequencies:

10.103.7
10.112.3
10.118.4
10.126.2
10.134.6

These were all picked randomly by me on a whim - so who knows what - if any -
interference we will experience.

If the net gets bumped off one, then look for us on one of the others.

The net starts at UTC Friday (Thursday evening 7E/6C/5M/4P).

[Elecraft] ECN/30 report

2005-03-11 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Someone once wisely suggested picking a non-cardinal frequency for the ECN -
and I think I really need to heed that advice next week - so watch for an odd
frequency (e.g. 10118.7) for the net next week.

Running QRP-10W has it's disadvantages - especially when a DX station
(TO7K/TO7C?) starts calling on top of your net, and then you try to QSY up and
wind up in the middle of the DXers trying to call the DX.

The net started off quite nicely with AI4BJ/Mark in KY (K2 #3862 - RST 579).
Shortly after that, the DX station popped up. My first attempt to move involved
a QSY up to 10115.5 - then I started hearing the DXers calling. Then I tried to
announce another QSY to 10114.5.

So, if you were looking for the net and having a tough time locating it, I
finally ended up on 10114.5, and had no more check-ins after calling for about
10-15 minutes.

I then decided to make the best of the evening, and tried calling CQ - and
immediately was greeted by two replies. The stronger signal was W4ZLU/Bill in
AL. We had a very solid path since I was 589 (and he was s9+10dB at 50W).

Tuning around shortly after my contact, I did hear W4ATK (with N2KZ) mentioning
that he had a K2 at 10W - coincidentally, on 10115 - so, I'm sorry if you were
looking for the ECN.

The YL/'pre-Master Control' here has given me the okay to play radio while she
sleeps in Saturday morning - so I'm looking forward to working all of those
Elecraft S/N's out there.

Actually - if you have internet access - the easiest and cheapest way to
practice might be going right to the ARRL and downloading the most recent MP3

My guess is that it is a contract out of China. I don't think they are
'rebranded' from another manufacturer (although my knowledge of electronics
tools and soldering stations is quite limited).

I bought the R/S setup (ESD matt/wrist strap and Temp controlled iron) thinking
- It would be a good experiment for others who don't want to, or can't,
acquire the higher end tools like Weller, etc. Since I know that they worked
for me - I offer my little endorsement - but keep in mind that the soldering
station might not be grounded by plugging it in - you should use an extra cord
that does not come with either the station or the ESD matt wrist strap. That
cord was easily assembled with some simple wire and a couple banana plugs from
R/S. I think I ran the soldering iron and wrist strap to the matt, and the matt
to the ground plug on the outlet. Most of the time I ran the iron around 700
deg F.

Although it's not really a bragging point - I was able to build the kit
completely from resources I acquired at R/S (including a mini-screwdriver kit,
flush cut diagonal cutters, needle nose pliers, forceps, solder, etc). They're
not the best tools, but they worked - and they enabled me to put together the
'best' little radio.

I built my K2 (#3421) and all of my options (KNB2, KAF2, KAT2, KSB2, KBT2, PLL
stability kit, Dummy Load, 4:1 Balun) with this set up - and the only problem I
had was non-ESD related (flakey PLL crystal started to go out after a few
weeks). This is perhaps more of a testimony to the design of the kit than it is
to the quality of the tools - but it can be done.

=

For those lurking...

If you are on the fence wondering whether or not to build a K2 - wonder no
longer. 90% of the requests for help you see here are from fewer than 10% of
kit builders (should I dare say 3%?). The chances that you will really need
help are low - and if you do need help - you'll get a reply very quickly from
this group.

For any new builder ... keep in mind the following:
- If you don't know how to solder - practice on one of the mini-kits or a K1
- Inventory before you build
- Use ESD safe procedures
- Build when you are awake and alert
- Check twice Solder once
- Make sure the K2 works before you start adding options

Finally - have fun! This is one of the greatest little radios you'll ever build
and own.

[Elecraft] ECN Tonight

Just a reminder that ECN will be this evening (Thursday).

30m: 7E/6C/5M/4P (z) on 10115
40m: 8E/7C/6M/5P (0100z) on 7045

Some info about checking in to the net can be found here:

I'd also be curious if there would be any interest in attempting another 30m
net at z on Saturdays (for those on the West coast who are still at work
during the week). Just drop me a note directly (off-list). If there's enough
interest, I'll see if I can clear my schedule for an hour Saturday night.

checks in tonight.

[Elecraft] ECN Report

2005-03-03 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I started the net on 10114 after hearing some weak signals on 10115.

There were 5 check-ins on 30m. It seems like I must have a tunnel to Michigan
tonight because 4 of the 5 were from there.

NA8M John MI [579] K2/100
AB8KJ Chuck MI [589] K2/100 #2596
WA3TUU Rick MI [559] very weak at first - but easier to copy towards the end
N4SO Ken AL [579] K2 #3394
K8NWD Tim MI [599] K2 #0076

Only other item to comment on was some QRM from ND9M/MM [599+] near Florida who
apparently wasn't hearing the net too well as he was trying to carry on a quick
QSO with another station that was too weak to copy here.

=

The 40 meter net started on time on 7045 and consisted of one check in
(actually - a 'recheck' from the 30m net) - also from Michigan :-)

AB8KJ Chuck MI [579] K2/100 #2596

I guess tonight was my lucky night for Michigan. Thanks alot to all of you who
hung in there as I tried to dig around for more check-ins and also for those
who tried to relay my call for check-ins.

=

If there's anyone interested in trying to repeat 30m on Saturday evening, drop
me a quick note, and I'll see if I can clear an hour Saturday evening - either
at 2300 or z.

[Elecraft] ECN30 - Tonight

2005-02-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I'll be looking for your check in tonight at z and 0200z (we might still be
running at 0100z if there's enough activity to keep us busy). Our goal is to
see how well 30m works - and if possible, to exchange some S/N's for the
Elecraft Awards.

I've tried to run some antenna and propagation analysis, and things will start
shutting down for me toward the east around 0200z... you can look at some
VOACAP images I produced here...

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/aa0ni/album?.dir=/df55.src=ph.tok=phkwLlCB7uxCNSF
[purple = s1, blue = s3, green = s5, yellow = s7]

I will probably need someone in the Rockies to act as a relay westward, as well
as someone in the Ohio Valley eastward (10W isn't exactly QRO).

My K2 only goes down to 9 wpm... so I'll try to QRS at 9-10 wpm tonight ... and
next week we'll go a little faster.

Don't forget your Q-signals... (yes - these are a little twisted from their NTS
roots)

QNI : I want to check in
QNS callsigns : The following stations are checked-in callsigns
QSP callsign : I am relaying for callsign / Will you relay for callsign?
QRU : I don't want to contact anyone
QTC callsign : I want to contact callsign / Do you want to contact anyone?
QNX : I want to check out
QNO callsign : callsign has checked out
QNF : The net is free

First, we'll try to quickly gather all of the QNI. When you check in - I'll
need your name and state/province/country. If you want to exchange RST with me,
that would be fine - it helps me know how well I'm getting out, and I will
return the favor.

Then I will announce who is on the list (QNS).

For those interested - we will try to make one round through the list to let
you contact one other station checked into ECN to exchange S/N, rig, etc.

When it is your turn - you can do one of the following:
-
|
|If you want to contact someone, signify QTC callsign - and then start
calling
|them. If the contact isn't succesful after 3 repeats on either side, we'll
move
| to the next call on the list.

[Elecraft] ECN/30 - Success!? (I think)

2005-02-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Well - if you never have any goals to aim for, you won't know if you got them.

First of all - hats off to Kevin/KD5ONS who does this every week for you guys.
Being NCS is fun - but it also can be complicated - as I can see by trying to
get through all my chicken scratches.

For those who weren't able to join us - it started promptly at z and came
to an end around 0030-0040z.

I count 10 check ins - I have info on some, but not all (if it's in brackets -
it's from QRZ.com) - and your RST is in braces.

K6DGW [CA] [FRED] {didn't look sri}
W6UR  [CA]  LOU {599}
NY2LJ [NY] [LONNIE] {549}
N4GE   TN   JERRY K2 #1054 {579}
K2HYD  VA   RAY {339}
W7WEL  ID   BILL K2 #4001 {569}
W4FOA  GA   TONY {589}
WA5ZNU CA   LEIGH {339}
K6FM   OR   JAN {589}
W1TF  [GA] [RALPH] {589}

Many thanks to all of you taking the time to jump in there.

Lessons learned include:

- 30m is a great band - and was especially cooperative today - can't wait to
try it again (maybe for those who are too close for 30, we can try 40m at
0100z?)

- 10 wpm was probably overkill - I think many folks were patient with me even
though it probably wasn't necessary - unless someone specifically requests it,
or checks in with QRS, I'll be at 13-15 wpm.

- I made an assumption (bad idea) that some folks might want to exchange S/N's
- I'm going to ask you to send QTC when you check in if you want to exchange
S/N's (e.g. DE AA0NI DAN OK QNI QTC K)

- We're going to have to work at making QNI easier - what I need to have you do
when you are checking in after I call QNI? is to send your suffix. I'll respond
with your suffix, and you can send your QNI info.

For example...
==
NCS: ECN QNI? DE AA0NI K
YOU: XYZ
NCS: XYZ
YOU: DE K2XYZ JOE NY QNI QNX GE K {Joe wants out early, so he signed QNX}
NCS: TU JOE 73 = ECN QNI? K
YOU: FA
NCS: FA
YOU: DE W6FA BILL CA QNI QTC K
NCS: TU BILL PSE [AS] ECN QNI? DE AA0NI K {Bill wants to exchange S/N - QTC}
...

- Don't try to keep your list on the same page you are trying to copy by hand -
it makes for poor organization

Well - that's all for now. Thanks again - and we'll be back on in about an hour
to try it some more (10115 +/-2 at 0200z).

Re: [Elecraft] ECN30 - Tonight

2005-02-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Hi Leigh,

Wow - your sample script is quite efficient. I like it, and will try to use
it... but for starting out, I was just hoping to take check ins by their full
callsign, and then if anyone NEEDED to interject something (i.e. they were
relaying someone in, or they needed to check out and it wasn't their turn) that
they could send their suffix (e.g. NI) in between transmissions.

I am realizing more that I am not very literate when it comes to true formal
net protocol. Many who want to check in are just looking for an opportunity to
get their names on the list and make sure their radio is still working, or
their new antenna is doing a good job, and possibly contact other Elecrafters
(i.e. have fun)... so if I'm going overboard on trying to over formalize the
net, let me know (I'm trying to find a happy balance between order and fun).

I started to work on a sample script in a response - but after seeing how
efficient the one you submitted - I can't produce what I was thinking without
incorporating the much more efficient model (which would really help at 9-10
wpm). If you feel comfortable with that format and would like to use it, let me
know, and I'll see if I can request folks use it next week. In the mean time,
I'll take check ins anyway they come (full callsign, or suffix).

So - to summarize - if you want to check in - I'll need your callsign. If all I
hear is a 'Z', then I'll send a 'Z' back, and you can give your full call,
name, and SPC.

Thanks for the question, and I hope I've clarified it to your liking.

p.s. The section in your script about QTC? was pretty much how I envisioned
it.

[Elecraft] ECN/30 - Thursday this week

2005-02-22 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Thanks to all who were ready to check in last week. I apologize for having to
back out at the last minute, but something urgent came up (radio is important
to me... but it's still just a hobby).

I'm going to try to run ECN/30 on Thursdays on 10115 +/- 2. The early net will
start around 6 PM Central Time ( UTC Friday). For those who aren't able to
make it at that time, I will run a 2nd edition of the net around 8 PM Central
Time (0200 UTC). Propagation will probably start shutting down around 9 PM
(0300z).

This week, starting out, I'll try to keep the code speed around 8 wpm for those
who are a little rusty. I ask that you do the same for others checking in so
that we don't leave anyone in the dust. Each week, I'll try to bump it up 1
wpm/week - but we won't exceed 17 wpm... instead, we'll start back at 8 wpm the
following week.

This will be a semi-formal net, and I hope I'm not overdoing it... can't make
everyone happy here ... but here's some tips to help us get started. Just like
every Novice had to learn a few basic Q-signals (QTH, QRM, QRN, QSB, and
QRS)... we'll need to keep a few more in mind to help things run smoothly.

=

The first priority on my agenda will be to get everyone checked in (QNI) who
wants to check in.

When you check in, all I need is your callsign, name, and SPC
(state/province/country) ... e.g. AA0NI DE K3LY QNI BOB PA K. If all you want
to do is check in, and check out... be sure to also mention that you are QRU
(you have nothing to share) and QRT (e.g. AA0NI DE K3LY QNI BOB PA QRU QRT K).
That way I'll be sure to count you as a check-in, but won't include you on our
roster for exchanging Elecraft SN.

If we all keep it short and sweet, we will quickly move on to the fun part...

After we've got everyone on board, I'll announce the stations on the roster
listed in the order that they checked in (e.g. QNS K3LY W5AB N7TKA ... ) then
I'll start at the top of the list (e.g. K3LY DE AA0NI QTC? K), and let everyone
get a chance to call at least one other check-in and exchange your info (Name,
SPC, RST, Rig, Power, Elecraft SN - e.g. K3LY DE AA0NI DAN OK 559 K2 5W 3421
K). After the first time through the list (assuming it is short), I'll look for
more QNI and start back up at the top. I'll also try to call for QNI every
15-20 minutes.

If I need you to relay, or if you are relaying for someone, signify that with
QSP (e.g. AA0NI DE K3LY QSP QNI AA4YD). I'll probably respond to have you get
info and relay it back (e.g. K3LY DE AA0NI PSE QSP AA4YD K), or maybe I'll ask
you to look for QNI (K3LY DE AA0NI PSE QSP ANY QNI K), and you can call CQ ECN
QNI DE ... K.

After you have my attention, if you want to check out, just let me know by
sending QNX or QRT. I'll announce to the net that you left (e.g. QNO K3LY).

Anytime you are checked in, and need to get my attention, just send the last
1-2 letters in your call. Then when I recognize you (by repeating your 1-2
letters), just identify (DE K3LY) and let us know what you've got (e.g. QSP, or
QNX/QRT).

If you want to contact another station on your turn, signify by sending QTC
followed by that stations callsign (e.g. QTC W5AB W5AB DE K3LY K3LY K). If you
signify QTC ANY - then we'll let everyone have a chance to call YOU, and you
can work one station. If either station has trouble working the other after 3
tries each, we'll move on to the next station on the list. If you copied
everything correctly, send QSL so we know we can move on to the next station.

When there are no more QNI or QTC, then I'll sign QNF (frequency is free) and I
will go QRT.

=

I hope this doesn't complicate matters - and I really hope that this will be a
blast for those who are looking for Elecraft Numbers. I'm already excited
thinking about it.

Looking forward to your check-ins...

We'll be looking for your QNI tonight on ECN/30. Look for us on or around 10115

If we get a good turn out, we might try to do this again next week - and see if
we can't make the net format a little more formal to help folks exchange serial
numbers with one another for Elecraft Awards.

[Elecraft] ECN/30m Tuesday night

2005-02-14 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I've been in touch with Kevin/KD5ONS, and I'm going to try spearheading a 30m
version of the Elecraft CW Net Tuesday evening (UTC Wed) from z-0100z on
10115 +/- 2kHz.

30m is (in my opinion) one of the best bands to operate QRP because it has less
noise than 40m, and just about everyone is running 'barefoot' on 30m, so
there's less chance of getting our 'toes' stepped on when we turn down the
power. Except for the occasional DX pileup, it's usually a nice quiet place to
make contacts and ragchew, and now with the waning sunspot cycle, 30m is
getting longer earlier - so hopefully we'll be able to get stations checking in
from all over this spring.

If we get enough interest, and if I can figure out this net-control business,
maybe we can figure out a way for folks to work towards their K2 awards at the
same time.

I think that as long as there is QRP, Elecraft, kit building, and ham radio in
general - there will always be CW (unless they one day decide to make CW
illegal ... which would be really dumb - they still use AM don't they - however
I think they did ban spark gap transmitters, but not because they were morse

(and sailboards!) even though steam ships were developed over 100 years ago.
People still use hot air baloons even though we just celebrated the first
century of powered flight. We still make kids learn how to write by hand with
#2 pencils even though most American students have access to a computer and
know how to use one. No - I think that we are quite a long way from seeing the
end of CW. The CW bug 'infects' a certain kind of person. There's no known
antivirus/antibiotic for this kind of 'infection' - and it spreads readily.

Re: [Elecraft] Yosemite Sam zulu time

2004-12-22 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Two log and time related comments:

- Keeping a log is great when you have a neighbor that complains that you're
the reason his (TV, Radio, VCR, Computer, Microwave, or Cat) went on the blink
last week. You can go back and ask him when it happened and confirm/deny it was
you when you both look over your log book.

- Sticklers for time in the U.S. should run (not walk) to WalMart (or
Amazon.com) and pick up a new Casio Wave Ceptor Analog/Digital WWVB watch.
The second time zone can be set to GMT (not London... there's a separate
setting for London). The GMT setting is not prone to DST adjustments - meaning
that there is no excuse for not being able to log the correct UTC/GMT time in
your log. I've had mine for over a week, and I absolutely love this watch.

It used to be Standard Operating Procedure for all hams to keep their logs

zones, this is the only practical way to keep QSL card records.

I think it is remiss of current education in ham radio, that we do not
emphasize the continued need for ALL emergency work, and casual operating
records, to be kept, and in Zulu time, just in case we have to document it
at some future time; when we were on the air on a particular date. Don't
forget the date roll over, if your local date is some zones removed from
 GMT.

Perhaps this lax time keeping currently, grew out of the dropping of the
requirement of keeping a log; but I keep one for HF anyway, just in case,
and for QSL purposes, and documentation of emergency communications.
Likewise, in working drills for ARES with Red Cross, we keep the Red Cross
log in GMT, to have an unambiguous time reference, and we keep a clock
marked GMT, in the Red Cross shack. It really helps to use that 24 hour
based system, to know if an emergency message was delivered at midnite or
 noon.

Re: [Elecraft] WAS in SweepStakes in 6 Hrs (Almost)

2004-11-08 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I put in about about 6-7 hours of SS - all on 40m with the K2 and a long
buddipole up 8 ft in the front yard. About 4 hours were between 0300-0730z and
woke up early Sunday morning to put in 2-3 more hours (1230-1500). Had no time
after church to work any more SS (was hoping to get on 20m and get more
sections). I worked roughly 50 sections and I think I made almost 100 contacts.
I turned it all off when it was time to leave for church, and I do remember my
last contact broke the 10,000 pt barrier - and I was a very satisfied operator
(and thrilled with the K2).

I haven't worked 40m much late at night, but I think I'll try to do it more
often when I can't sleep. California was amazingly open after sunrise - but I
think I was aided more by the super contesting station's antennas and
conditions than my 5W and buddipole. With my compromise antenna and QRP signal,
I would tune around (with the pre-amp off) and look for signals that were at
least s9 to work. If they were s5 or less, I usually found that they could not
even hear me. Most of the time, I was averaging 15 contacts/hr, and maxed out
close to 20 in the morning.

Not being a highspeed (20 wpm) CW op - I found that I had to use a CW
receiving 'crutch' on my pc. It saved my hide about 75% of the time ... but my
ear was improving towards the end, and I found that I was getting comfortable
with the 25wpm ops.

For W0NTA - I heard you Sunday morning working a KS station (and you were quite
strong into OK), and wish I could have worked you - it would have been my only
2-way QRP contact.

Re: [Elecraft] Hum coupling? - A real fix!

2004-10-29 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Actually - after toasting my internal KBT2 by overcharging with an uncontrolled
solar panel (hint hint... words for the wise) - I bought a $50 MityMite 12Ah
battery/charger from Autozone. I plug it in to charge when I'm not on the air,
and then I unplug the charging cord, and turn on the radio and have RFI free
operation (well - at least free of Power Supply related RFI).

I think Elecraft might do well do design a matching UPS/PS for the K2 K2/100.
It could utilize a smaller - well designed power supply that acts primarily as
a charger for an internal 25+ Ah battery that is used to power the K2. It could
go into an EC2 enclosure - and possibly have a forward facing speaker and
digital readout of battery voltage readout and/or charger battery status LEDs
(rapid charge, float charge, low-voltage disconnect). Another option might be a
connection in the back for a solar panel or other 'high voltage DC' input (high
voltage being 15-24V).

off a single AA battery. I am able to adjust it for UTC, but I must readjust it
with each time change. I think it was made by Oregon Scientific.

Here's one just like it for $17.
http://donrowe.com/oregon_scientific/rm103a.html

When I figured out the model number, I used google.com and froogled for RM103A.
I found this same model for $13.
http://www.buyreliant.com/oregon/rm103a.htm

The RM103A lets me set it to 24 hour mode.

Here's another one I stumbled upon for $8 - although I can't vouch as to
whether or not it will allow for UTC time.
http://www.softwareandstuff.com/CES10290.html

To keep this post On-Topic ... I find that the RM103A clock fits fairly nicely
next to my portable digital thermometer, MH2 mike, and Palm-key when I pack my
K2 in its aluminum tool case.

Only $20. And it is a nice size for packing or for on the desk. Normally
$30, I think. Nice clock with super lighting. Number is 63-964.
(www.radioshack.com didn't show it as a sale item (still shows $20) but the
sign at the store did). Only drawback is that you can't set it for UTC.
Not a biggy in my mind.

Re: [Elecraft] Parts for compact loop antenna - toroid help

2004-10-07 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I'm just posting this so that someone can tell me ... NO - DON'T DO THAT - or -
DO THIS.

I know I could use a loop inside of a compact loop, but a toroid is more
appealing for me because of the size and appearance. It looks like the
consensus is that I need an Iron Core Toroid ... something along the lines of a
T-50-6 (or larger size diameter T-114-6). This will be used as a 'transformer'
between a turn (or a few turns) of wire run between the center conductor and
shield of my coax, and a single turn of a compact loop. I plan to use this for
80-20m.

When I inquired with the original author of the webpage (aa5tb) - he thought he
used a ferrite core ... FT-114-43 maybe - he didn't know for certain. It sounds
like from some of you - that a ferrite core has significantly less coupling
than an iron core.

Can I safely assume that if a core is of a low density (reduced coupling), that
I can make up for it with more turns on the primary/coax side - however, if it
is a high density core - it would be very hard to reduce coupling since the
secondary/compact loop side is already limited to one turn?

Finally - many of you were able to tell me about the cores - BUT - what core
would you use for this application (coupling your transmission line to a
compact transmitting loop)?

Thanks again - and sorry about the Off Topic post (albeit - it is for a
QRP/Elecraft radio).

[Elecraft] Parts for compact loop antenna - toroid help

2004-10-06 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I'm thinking about building a non-tunable compact loop for 40m (7040) using
RG-8. If I have good success, I'll be making other loops for 20m and 30m
(mono-band / tuned to the CW-QRP frequency). I need some help figuring out
which toroid to buy to build a portable compact loop like is shown here:

http://www.qsl.net/aa5tb/loop.html

It looks like I can buy the cable, toroid, and even the banana plug/bnc adapter
at Ocean State Electronics. My only question is - which toroid core should I
buy for this application? I've seen comments on the web about using a T-50-2
for the Rock Loop, and I've seen other vendors selling a T-50-6 which
supposedly covers the entire HF band. But I cannot find either one at Ocean
State Electronics. For 40m, should I buy a T-50-61? What about 30m? T-50-61 or
-67?

Thanks for your help,
Daniel / AA0NI

Re: [Elecraft] KAF2 v. KDSP2

2004-07-22 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I bought my KAF2 before the KDSP2 was available. I have not upgraded to the
KDSP2 for the following reasons:

- it costs more
- it uses more current
- the KAF2 does a great job on CW

If you are a SSB op, and are going with a KPA100... then it would be a natural
progression to have a KDSP2 so that the radio is on par with other radios that
have IF notch filtering and IF passband shift capabilities (although the KDSP
is not IF... it is AF in design).

I am planning on purchasing a K2 for general use (SSB and CW) with a current

preferences may change as my experience grows, so flexibility is important.
The question is, why would you want to have the KAF2 instead of the KDSP2?
From querying the archives, it seems that the KAF2 is primarily used for CW
and is effective for that use. Is the KDSP2 less effective for reducing
unwanted noise on CW, or is it equally effective but more costly. I assume
that Elecraft continues to sell the KAF2 because it either has a performance
advantage in some niche or is less costly and works for certain uses (such as
 CW).

 Thanks for the advice,

RE: [Elecraft] Anyone planning on the Flight of the BB's?

2004-07-21 Thread Daniel Reynolds
AA0NI - BB #30 - will be active from a city park (hopefully one with a covered
picnic table since heat indices have exceeded 100 deg F) in Oklahoma City. K2
#3421 with a buddipole (or buddistick), and maybe a long wire (100 ft) up
around 10 feet for comparison. I might turn the long wire into a 40m full wave
loop. Don't know for certain just yet...

72!
Daniel

p.s. Activity for BB #30 also depends on whether or not he's studied for his
final exam on Monday evening (Assembly Language) and if any other social events
pop up on his agenda this weekend.

[Elecraft] OK QRP group

2004-07-14 Thread Daniel Reynolds
If you live in or near Oklahoma, and you are interested in QRP - I just
activated an e-mail list on Yahoo! Groups that is just for you.

All you have to do to join the list is send an e-mail to:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

... and they can post just as easily to:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

... and unsubscribe by sending an e-mail to:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you join the group, an introductory e-mail will tell you more about what I
hope the group will involve (don't worry - it is a low/no maintenance
organization). I'm just looking to get some local QRP operators together to
help each other, make contacts with one another, and have fun.

Thanks and 72/73,

Re: [Elecraft] K2: receiving noise without antenna on certain qrgs

2004-07-12 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I have experienced intermod of local AM broadcasters as high up as 40m. I was
using a 100 ft long wire up about ten feet. It was setup one way (E-W), and it
wasn't noticeable, but when I turned it the other way (N-S), I believe that it
may have interacted more with the power lines several hundred feet away
(parallel with the lines). This is in an urban/suburban setting.

As a side note, I believe that the local power lines are carrying quite a bit
of the local AM signals based on experiences I've had listening to AM on the
car radio and being stopped at a light immediately under power lines. I'd be
tuned into one station, and another station(s) would bleed right over it.

So - your theory might be correct based on my experiences.

So far I have not been able to determine the cause OR the solution to the

this be a bad ground connection of the key connector?

Maybe it should be something more along the lines of ...

IT YAKS (Icom-TenTec Yaesu-Alinco-Kenwood-SGC) ... what most appliance

[Elecraft] Field Day Antennas

2004-06-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
This will be my 2nd Field Day for my K2 #3421. This year I'm going to try my
Commercial Buddipole (this time it is almost twice as long with three pairs of
antenna arms and the 4 segment shock-corded whips). I'm also going to try
throwing up a W3EDP (85' inverted L with 15' counterpoise) for the low bands
and a compact transmitting loop (20' of 1/4 copper pre-tuned with matching
coax stubs for 20m and 40m).

Complementing my K2's power needs are the internal KBT2, a 7 AH external
gel-cell, and a small 5W solar panel.

My question for all of you Field Day guru's...

I'm closing on my first house today. None of these antennas exist at the house.
If I set them all up in a temporary sort of way in the backyard and take them
down after Field Day is done, can I still be considered 1B (especially if I
decide to log with a laptop plugged into commercial mains, and maybe drag the
K2 inside when it gets too hot outside)? The laptop won't be used for sending
or receiving, just logging. No towers or masts exist at the new QTH.

Thanks for your rule interpretations in advance... and enjoy Field Day!
