[Elecraft] K2 to sell !
Before putting this transceiver on ebay, I will try direct! I want to sell my K2/100 to make money for a K3! It is composed of the following add-on : K2, by itself KSB2 KAT2 KIO2 K160 KAF2 KPA100 KAT100 The KAT100 is in the large box (identical to the K2) I include Power cable with Anderson connectors, the K2 cover with the KAT2 and KIO2 module. You will have also all tech books for all material (K2, KPA100, KAT2 and KAT100, KAF2, KIO2, K160. I just tested the transceiver and all bands give more than 100 watts I will also put the connection cable between K2/100 and KAT100. I do not have the liason with a PC, but having tested it with flying wires, it is working as expected (controled by MixW, HRD, WSPR). I ask $1.800 via PayPal exclusively. For USA expect around $80 for insured package. [Elecraft] K2/KSB2 problem
Hello all the team, particularly DON! Since some week I had a KSB2 problem. The K2 is working perfectly in CW, alone, or with the KPA100, with the KSB2 position jumpered. If I put KSB2 in place, the K2 Smeter display go to S9 + 40 block the receiver and too, does not switch in Tx when I close either the key or the mike PTT. I did this morning voltages test on KSB2, and the following list is the values not normal, as indicated page23 of KSB2Assembly instruction : U1-12 = 5.02 (TXC) U1-14 = 5.21 U1-16 = 0.00 U1-17 = 5.23 U1-21 = 0.00 (RXS) U1-22 = 4.27 (RXC) U1-28 = 4.92 U2-5 = 5.36 U3 OK U4-3 = 5.24 All these values where obtained in Rx. I did not check them in Tx as it was impossible to switch in Tx mode! All values not noted where per the book! If I remember well, the U1 is a new one! [Elecraft] Antenna static charge precautions - any tips?
Hi, all! 10 years ago (in 2001) YL and myself changed our home location and our place of choice is very thunderstorm addictive!!! So, after burning an Drake TR7, I installed, on the antenna line a box with a big relay, turning on with whatecer 12 V PS I turned on swithching between a chock (2.5 mH National) when the PS is off, and a 1.5 Meg resistor with the PS on. The build up of static was resolved and I did not had any discharge with whatever TRX I am using (K2, Juma TRX2 and KX3). At this time I was running 600 W so the relay was able to support that power level (TR7 and L7A PA). Best 73 to all and GL with statics and thunderstorms!!! Hello Dave, It's normal, what you hear ! The direct connection to the d-sub connector is not recomended as it can damage either the computer or the transceiver. You will have to build the interface shown in the N3FJP software, either with transistors or with optical coupling ( prefered, no groud loop!). The result should be very nice with either interface. [Elecraft] K2 and serials ports (was KUSB vs K2)
Hi Toby I too run around troubles with USB to serial converters. The only one I had to use was a "Prolific" one and using it with XP Pro it was in place as it shoulld, but impossible to make any use with MixW. As I had to change my mother bord the one I got sitll had one Comm port and I had to make an adaptation to use it for CAT control and keying of my K2. I did that wit one female and two male DB9 plugs, and I got full control of the K2 with either MixW or HRD software. [Elecraft] K2 keyer missfinction
Hello the gang! A friend of mine (F8BDX) just finished his K2 and he is very eager user! He just have a small problem in CW. Using a bencher keyer thatr he was using with his TS450, he get some bad dot or dash at moderate high speed. From time to time asking for a dot he get a dash or wanting a dash he get a dot . We tried every way to correct that, and even with the dummy load directly at the K2 ant out, we have the same result. Does anybody had this malfunction, and eventually what solution is possible? I do not think it's a microcontroler bug. Re [Elecraft] K2 Resistor Question...
Hi David I do not see any problem, at least for R6, 7 and 8. You have an M 10 db attenuator and mesuring R6 or R8 you have 100 ohmswith 168 ohms in parallel. So the result should be 62.68 ohms on you DMM! R7 is 68 ohms with 200 ohms in parallel so you should have 50.74 ohms! So as the series of resistors are 5% tolerance what you got on your DMM is largely within this parameter! 73 regards F5UL/Bob ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 Power control
Hi the gang, Att Gary! I was going to test the new KAT100. A moment before, it was all right with all checks, the bridge balanced nicely. I was doing this test without the KPA100, directly at the K2 output without KAT2. No reactions from KAT100 (no led on, no detection bye ATU menu). Wth 5 w on power level, the output is more than 20 w, with I>4.50 A. Tx off, power to 0, tune on output 20w for a few second then down to 0. tx off power max, tune on, output >20w, but no control with power level. Back to basic K2, withpout KAT100 or KAT2, same results. In this conditions, VREFDET around 1.3 v. If power =0 then VREFDET = 0. Well I,m lost once more. The KPA100 is running OK. The KPA100 look OK with resistances check. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Re K2 ordering!
Hi Brian, What you are trying to do for your GB Montessori School is exactly what I was going to do for a youg association here near Geneva. But I failes because I did not get any allocation for this project, as it was termed unnecessary!!! Well You did right with the K2, because when you finish the kit, by the book, you know and understand the transceiver as much as their conceptors. As you intend, take the SSB module, beside fone you will be able to run digital mode too. I waited two years before ordering the KPA100 and it is not yet in service! About a year after the K2 and SSB, I instaled the KAT2 antenna tuner. So you can do lot of things whith QRP level and I will not change anything but for another K!!! [Elecraft] Re: KPA100 problems
Hello all I'm going to call the list once more for help! I found the following components out of use : U1, Q6, Q7, Q12, Q10, Q11. All where replaced. Now, the amp by itself is working as expected, but and once more big BUT : Very high current for the K2 (more than 4.8 A). Under 11 w (KPA off) in TUNE, on the K2 indicated power 1w, Reflect 3.5/1 but 16w on the external wattmeter. Still high current. Over 11 w (around 15 to 20w) same display, Reflct 1.1/1, but output wattmeter 60w. This indication does not change whichever output I ask from 11 to 100 w, it stay at 60 indicated. R26, R27 are behaving correctly, The bridge balance is OK taking the zero on R27 (no changes on the K2 display) U5 pin 1 and pin 7 no changes. Jumping U5 pin 3 to pin one (after removing U5) voltage follow R27 variation, but U6 pin 6 (VRFDET) stay put at 0v. So my conclusion is U5 and U6 dead! The K2 without the KPA100 is working perfect, but just pluging the KIO cable (K2 to KPA100 remote) or direct P1 to P4 disable the power control on the K2. The K2 is OK with the computer control too, but that has no relation with the problem! I ordered yesterday the op-amp replacement. In the mean time, have you any other diag than mine? [Elecraft] K2, why change?
Hi Doug, I justalso finished the CWWPX Contest. Asou said the condx where weird et in surplus I had almost 24 hours of thunderstorms... Due to that conditions I lost a 2sc1969 in the PA and yesterday morning was passed to change the beast in order to continue!!! But as you tell all, the K2 is marvelous in a contest. I used mine barefoot and in spite of all disturbance I did 178 with 82000 points. It's far from last year where I finish 3d place monoband 7 Mhz QRP but I will do better next year!!! As you did, with mine, I used only 300 Hz filter, and only one antenna so I did not had the ATU use you had to do. I too did not use full QSK but a 0.2s delay. But in all other respect it was more agreable to use than any other TRx I had in all my life (and it was long, I'm 73 old, and 54 ham!!!) I ,wait for the K3. I will see next year if I can do something about that new beast!!! [Elecraft] KPA100 - Super problem
Hi, Don and all the list Lasr Sunday, I was page 53 of the KPA100 manual, with every steps OK all the way up to securing the shield and closing the box! I had a very nice output, the KPA100 being direct with the K2 or with the remote EC2 case, Once the shield in place and verified for bad contact and so on, the next power up was a disaster. I did not switch to transmit!!! The resistors R21, R33 where burned out, RFC also, and after excanges with Don WFPR, diode D12 and D14 where also found in short. R22 and R13 where very hot, and the curent on the K2 display was about 1.6 A. So all off and after replacement and checking i'm at the following stage : with only the KIO2 connection or direct connection the curent flow from 12CTRL is around 1 A on the K2. Without PA power, only the KIO2 connection I do not get the NO PA PS information when turning on the K2. R13 is still very hot and R21 is hoter than normal. Pin #13 of U shold be at +4.9 V and insteed is at 0.1 V, as PIN #14. The 125 V is OK on R11. If I plug on the PA PS, I can not turn off the K2, his supply being done via 12CTRL line, either through the KIO2 or direct connection to J4. If I try to transmit even at 11 w level, I get a black cloud of smoke with R21 and R13 going "blam" I'm lost, Don , I changed the cap for .22µF and it's OK. [Elecraft] KPA100 - K2 #4498
Hello all! The cKPA100 arrived Wenesday and was finished and going through full test yesterday. It was perfect and I stoped just before instaling the shield (it was tested first direct with the K2 and after was mounted in the separate EC2 with trhe same good results, from 115w on 3.5 to 82 watts on 28, CW and SSB). This morning I mount the shield with all verifications, install the KPA definitly in the EC2 and last verification with dumy load. Work fine under 11 watts, and at 20 watts dialed, the 25 amp (normal not switched!) supply goes down to 0.7 volt, and sure the 20 amp fuse blow! So I check the supply itself, all correct (it was working before withe a home made 200 watts PA), the K2 by itself is OK. I reopen the EC2 dismentling the K2, remove the shield, and redo the resistance check : Q1 Q2 collectors 18 k, bases 11.2 ohms J3 +lead >15 k J2, Q9 and D13 all OK too. I dismount the PC from the sink and do the resistance check again after visual check to see if anything has gone bad, Same results for ressistance, so what can I do? To resume, the fuse blow when I turn on the K2 (sure, with the amp in service) power dialed over 11 watts (whatever, it blow with 11.2 or 100 watts!). Another constatation is R21 going very hot, even starting to smoke! Help please... F5UL/Bob ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 no receive . . . where to start
Hi Mike Don,W3FPR just gave you very good tips to look at your problem. Another one may be the BFO frequency not in place in respect of the filter bandpass. Look in the technical part of the filter alignment and see if your BFO frequency follow (at some 10th of Hz) the values given in the book. If you are in CW (normal) and if the BFO is on the other side of the bandpass you will not hear anything !!! Hi all the list Thank's a lot to Gary, Jim, Toby, Luc, Don ... for your replies ! Up to now, I did statics tests resistances to ground and voltage, with power to minimum. Well, Gary told me that I had to watch 8R going down in tx at least 0 .3 volts. The 250 mV was not far from this limit so I pushed the point and changed the 2N3906. The only result where 7.91 in rx and 0.248 in tx so...??? I do not think this switch circuit is involved! Nothing else for now. Whenever I try to key the Tx during some seconds, with power set at 2 watts, the curent start at 0.7 Amp for a few seconds, then go up to limit with High Cur indication. The power out goe down during this time ! I still had another pair of 2SC1969 to change, but the resultswhere the same...!!! So I am lost. [Elecraft] K2 #4498 - Big problem
Hello the list, Sorry for the misunderstanding and the pass band used without necessities ! It was not about the bouncing back but the msg concerned my K2 Up to this morning, this K2 was a nice and good worker, with during the last six month about a thousand QSO under his belt ! But this morning turning it on, I just got a vigorous howl ( very low freq nois !). I turn it off, and on after a few second. The Rx start normaly and the noise start again after a few second. Re-turn off and tunr on and no howl and Rx is working correctly! The set was in CW mode so I turn down power (to abt 2/3 watts) and close the key... The result is correct on 1.8, 3.5, 7.0 but nil on the rest of the bands. Closing the key a little longer on 7.0 the rig goes to curent overange in abt 10/12 second and power fall down to zero. So power off, open the rig, remove the bottom cover and before removing the heat sink just check the resistance of driver and PA. On Q6 (driver) E to Gnd 1.3 ohm, B to Gnd 76/80 ohms, and C to Gnd > 500 ohms. On Pa C to Gnd > 600 ohms, B to Gnd 120/130 ohm E to Gnd 0 (it's normal!). They seems to be normals but any time I close the key I get High Cur after 5/6 seconds and power out ZERO !! I do not know what to do, so I will wait till tomorow and hope to get some indications from the list ! [Elecraft] K2 assembly, page 52 !
Yes Vincens, you have to do all modifications implemented on page 52 ! But verifie that pin 16 of MC145170 is cut where you see the X on page 52 too ! As you said, it's for shaping the CW signal... 72/73 Bob/F5UL ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] K2 # 4498 - Electrostatic protection
I'm in a very stormy country (Northern Alps) and we have at least once per month a thunderstorm that already cost me one pair of power Xstors (in my TS-130 - $380!!!) so even with $5 each TO220 part, I did not want to loose them, or at least reduce the chance to loose them. So I instaled on the KAT2 control board an RF Chock (1 mH) and an NE2 neon bulb wired between K18-pin 3/8 and ground just to establish a direct lway to ground for static electricity (via the chock) and in case of a virulent one turn on the NE2 and establish a full short to ground. Up to now I did not constat any loss of performance, either in transmission or reception and not changes in the KAT2 function. So... 73 to all and also a very heavy thank to all on the list, even if I do not use the information, it is a nice place to wander (hi!) [Elecraft] re : resistance vs impedence
Hello Ken, in your exemple despite the SWR staying the same the curent is not the same : at r=6+j16 the curent will much ùuch higher than with r=48+j146 ! Result : you will have more loss with the hight curent and the result will be less field intensity in the fist situation than in the second ! [Elecraft] K2 (#4498) and KSB2 performance
The KSB2 option was installed last saturday and tested during all this time. It was working OK by the book (!) and the only objection was the gain that was too just, very limit, the max output in SSB (upper or mower SB) was only 6 to 8 watts pep (as seen on the scope inh two tone test). I found on the web the paper from John KI6WX (July 18, 2002)relative to diverses modifications and improving the KSB2 performances. I did not do the filter bandwith modif (as I was very happy with what I got !)but I did the increased gain and reduced intermod modif. it was finished this morning and the results are as John said in his paper. Around 5/6 db increased output and also as a bonus an intermod distortion lower than I got before !I still did not make the ALC time constant change. I will may be do that when I used the K2 for PSK transmit. Thank to John, wayne Eric and the gang for their help ! 73 F5UL/Robert ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] K2 - Filters adjustement
I found all the literature on differents site very interesting, particularly the one using Spectrogramm to see what we are doing and have a good result. I used it after modification to inprove the filter rejection (positive) and it helped a lot. But I was not very glad with the results ! As I am using MixW as interface with digital modes, I remade the filters (CW, Low and Upper sideband, RTTY) adjustement and by visualising the waterfall and switching between waterfall and line display, I finaly arived to a very good filter implementation, CW 1.0 - 0.7 - 0.4 - 0.2 LSB 2.4 - 2.0 - 1.8 - 1.6 USB 2.4 - 2.0 - 1.8 - 1.6 RTTY 1.8 - 1.5 - 1.0 - 0.6 I will test all these passband and may be readjust them but I think it give me a good start ! Any way the Spectrogramm is a good tool and MixW is a very complementary tool ! 73 to all the list F5UL/Bob ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hello the list ! Thank you a lot for all interventions and all where at least on a point justified ! The problem was two bad solders one on D4 - K and the second on the base of Q7 ; I can not explain but the Xtor was destroyed (collector/base junction in short) and I just had another pair of 2sc1969 so now it's running super (one ZL station on 10 mhz yesterday morning and w8cw yesterday evening on 7 !!!) I will keep in touch with the list for the progress ! Super kit this K2, and the next will be the SSB option in order to run PSK mode !!! maybe also the ATU 73 to all F5UL/Robert ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 super kit, but new problem !
Hello the list ! I just finished K2 #4498. it was running all test in good condx and Rx and Tx where in the specs. I let it in stand by this morning on 7 Mhz and sudenly I read HiCur on and off. I put down the power level and I still got HiCur any time I close the keyer or put it in Tune. Power level = 0 in display I = 2.45 A. with curent limit set @ 2.5 A, whenever I key it in tune or with the keyer. First suspects the two 2SC1969. removed and changed for 2 others. No change ! And I forget the principal : reception is gone !!! So please help !!! I will accept any informations !
