Re: [Elecraft] Microphone for K2
Sara The Kenwood MC-43S is a good microphone, however you said for Contests / Dxpeditions. It is very difficult to either keep a log sheet with pen or pencil, or to type on the keyboard and picking up the microphone on every QSO. I would recommend one of the Heil Prosets, and the Heil foot switch to give you hands- free operation and make it easy to log the QSO's while you are talking. We have used them with the K2 on several DX trips to FP, V47, etc and they have preformed very well with the K2 (and other radios). My favorite with the K2 is the Heil Proset IC with the Heil Icom adapter, and the K2 microphone header set up for Icom. 73 and GL Hank K8DD SARA-VU3RSB wrote: Dear Fellow Elecraft members De Sara, VU3RSB from India I am just curious to get opinion for the best microphone for K2. Re: [Elecraft] The K2 and Random Antennas
Tom I would agree with Don! The K2 KAT2 should match it great . with or without the radials. When I was a young General in about 1959 or 60 I had great luck on 80 20 AM with a 60 - 65' longwire from the second floor window out to a tree. The shack was on the first floor with about 40 ft of coax of questionable quality, and I used a tuner. (WRL Globe Chief 90, homebrew cathode modulator, WRL tuner and an SX-99 and a homebrew TR switch). The more OT's that told me it shouldn't work, especially with no ground, the better it seemed to work! BTW, you could add a couple radials cut for 80 meters and use it on that band too - the 60 ft wire is almost a quarter wave on 80 and it should behave similar to a 60 ft high vertical (with some horizontal radiation too depending on how much it slopes) 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I'm about to order my K2 and I have a load of questions, but just one for now. -- 'Never argue with an idiot. Re: [Elecraft] Trip to Canada
Yes, you can take it along. You should, however, take it in to US Customs at the border crossing and have it registered on a Customs Form 4457. That will show that you had it when they looked at it! And, when you return to the US and the Customs person at the re-entry point asks what are you bringing back with you? and you say nothing and he says what about that radio that you bought in Canada? . you will have the piece of paper that says you had it before you entered Canada. If the Customs person wants to be a complete PITA, he can pull you into secondary and make life miserable. If you have the original receipt for the radio, complete with the serial number, that should work too. That said . I have gone to Canada and returned probably several hundred times with radios and other electronic stuff and only been questioned about Form 4457 one time . and that guy was almost a PITA! And that said it is far better to be prepared because US Customs can be one place that it is NOT better to ask forgiveness than it is to ask permission! So my best advice, after quite a few DXpedition trips that have taken us into or through Canada would be to take the safe route and have the paperwork! Re: [Elecraft] SO2R setup
In CT, CTWin, NA contesting programs the PTT delay is used to immediately key the radio (and amp, if used), delay the keying from the program for a user defined time, send the CW from the PC buffer and quickly drop the PTT. PTT delay will not work with the K2 because it is common to the dit line, or it will key the radio to full power, depending on how the keying is set up. I'm not sure about N1MM WroteLog and TRLog, but I believe they are the same. I have a box with a couple relays and a transistor to use LPT1 pin 14 to switch the keying line, amp relay line and eventually (when I get around to it) switch RX audio. AGC - was [Elecraft] OT-Preserving CW memories
I was at VO2AAA in Labrador City for CQ WW CW with K2/100 #850 and an AL-1200. We were next to a residential area with a very high line noise and precipitation static. On 80 and 160 meters with the AF gain about 3/4 way up and riding the RF gain and DSP with noise reduction made some of the second third tier stations copyable. Sometimes you have to be really fast on reducing the RF gain to save your ears! I don't really like the sound that I get out of my K2 with the DSP, but when you are digging stations out of the noise the NR and the DSP filter #1 really helped. The K2 as the run station was good for about 3000 Q's, the mult station for a couple hundred. And 3.4M points. Think I remember working a couple calls from this list! 73HankK8DD At 12/11/2004 07:45 PM, W3FPR - Don Wilhelm wrote: Ron and all, Are you aware that reducing the RF gain will reduce the AGC action as well. Folks who want to try it may be surprised how well copy can be made under QRM conditions with the AF gain at full and the overall gain controlled by the RF gain. With this technique, the residual AGC provides some 'limiting' protection for the ears while allowing one to dig for really weak signals - this is applicable at any bandwidth, but more so for wider ones. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - To this day I still prefer a wide filter, even with moderate QRM. With my K2 on CW, I use the SSB filter more than any other. I love being able to keep track of what's going on around the frequency I'm using. The trick of course, is to turn off the AGC so stronger signals in the passband won't depress the receiver gain. One of these days I'll add a hard limiter to protect my ears. The dynamic range of the K2 allows really huge peaks to come through without the AGC. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I don't use the internal keyer in the K2 but prefer my own keyer and I'd like to parallel my computer/cw keyboard with it. What kind of circuit would this require or could I just parallel the lines together? I don't use the internal keyer in either of the K2's either, so I parallel the lines together. I use phono jack cables for most everything and use a Y phone cable to join the memory keyer and the PC keying lines. Works great. 73HankK8DD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Tom WB2QDG - Original Message - From: Jim Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wednesday, September 1, 2004 8:22 pm Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Microphone for K2 I must not have been clear. it is not another option -- it's precisely the Plantronics headset I noted I had seen at Fry's Electronics. So everything that applies to making a cell phone headset work applies equally to making the PC headset work. The point is that these headsets differ only in 1) the quality of the headset and mic elements; 2) Physical comfort; 3) the connector(s) on the end. All of the Plantronics headsets have noise cancelling mics. Bill, NY9H, has observed that these capsules (and the capsules used in the VERY expensive ham mics) sell for half a dollar or less without the name of the very expensive ham mic marketing company on them. Another point. Plantronics is an old line telecommunications company. The Altec Lansing NAME was purchased at least a decade ago, is applied to cheap junk from the far east, and sold. There is no connection (other than this sale of the name) between the company using the name and the company that MADE the name a household word for high quality audio. In spite of its pedigree, I'll bet your headset works a treat on the K2! What can be very tricky to get to work is a headset with an inline PTT switch sold to work with a ham talkie. In essence, you have to do major surgery on what is a very delicate (and cheap) switch with very tiny and delicate wiring to either disable it or rewire it to work with a radio for which it was not intended. I bought one of these new at a hamfest. VERY bad idea. Jim Brown K9YC --Original Message Text--- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2004 19:08:31 EDT Another option may be to use a PC microphone/headset that are available in the market at very low prices. I use an Altec Lansing AHS-201 headset electret boom microphone with a single earpiece with my K2. As the headset is terminated in the standard 2 x 3.5mm stereo jacks I made up the necessary connectors and a PTT in a small plastic box with two leads out for the K2, 8 pin mic connector and a 3.5mm stereo plug for the headphone connector. A foot switch could be added if desired for PTT. The +5V bias voltage is already available at P1 on the K2 Front Panel board. All it takes is a suitable resistor to provide the bias voltage needed from the +5V on P1 pin 6 to the designated AF pin or pin 1 on the K2/KSB2 side. There is already a 2.2uF isolating capacitor, C34 on the KSB2 I/P, so no other isolation is required with the standard K2/KSB2. The bias voltage needed for the Altec Lansing AHS-201 does not seem critical. I used a single AA 1.5V dry cell in tests and with that was able to overdrive the K2 in the microphone high setting. An added advantage with this particular headset is the microphone is noise cancelling for use in noisy situations and the earpiece seems to work well with the K2 giving a good RX audio level. I had built the setup originally to use with a Yaesu VHF/UHF mobile and it was pleasing to find that it worked very well with the K2. Trying it out was easy as I already used the Yaesu standard for the K2 8 pin microphone connector. The Altec Lansing AHS-201 should be retailed from about $10 in the USA. The obsolete AHS-15 should also work well at an even cheaper price if still available. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Firmware change request
And this is very important even for SO1R stations who move stations or get moved to other bands! And thanks for the Q's in NAQP, Tor 73Hankaka Duck At 8/9/2004 11:29 AM, Torsten Clay wrote: I used my pair of K2/100's in last weekend's NAQP CW. Band conditions were pretty good for August, and I ended up with 789 qso's. I use the pair SO2R, meaning I am listening on one band while transmitting simultaneously on another band. In the NAQP mults count on every band (including 160), and you change bands a lot. I was reminded again of a K2 firmware bug that has been very annoying to me: after changing bands, the K2 transmit power is reset to zero. I takes several dits for the power to come up to 100%. That means if I change bands, the first station I call gets something like AOGW instead of N4OGW! If I forgot to hit the tune button or send a string of random dits, the station I was calling frequently came back with ? I'd rather not have to QRM other stations tuning up every time I change bands. Is it possible to make the K2 start out at 100% TX power? Is this supposed to protect the finals? In the NA Sprint contest (coming up in September!) this is a really big deal. There, you must QSY after calling CQ, and if the station I am calling misses my call, I may never hear him again! Re: [Elecraft] KAF2 v. KDSP2
In the CQ 160 CW contest this past winter we used my K2/100 (SN 850 A)with the KDSP2. No receive antenna (that's a whole story by itself!) and an Inverted-L with a flock of radials. Probably 80% of the time we ran with out any NR or DSP filters. If you could put a dollar amount on multipliers, the KDSP2 got us about 4 non-North American mults that we most likely would not have been 99.9% sure that he was coming back to us without it. In the month or two after the contest the thing got me another 5 countries that I probably would not have heard well enough to work. Would a KAF2 done that? Don't know - the other K2/100 (SN 3519 B) has a KAF2 but no 160M board in it yet, but I don't think so. That said, I don't like the KDSP2 at all for normal QSO's or HF contesting (160 is MF), but it's like that hammer drill I talked the wife into letting me get -- when you need it to do the job, you're glad you have it.
