[expert] GDM Locale Probs

1999-12-28 Thread Andreas Spengler

Hi folks,

I have a problem with the recent versions of GDM (gdm2, that is)...

No matter what language I set in the GDM greeter, when I start Gnome
it uses English as language for all its texts. In the shell all LANG
Variables are correctly set...

I would appreciate any help,

Edit your lilo.conf file in the /etc directory and then just type
"/sbin/lilo" (minus the quotes) and your set. If you have any errors it will
let you know. (you should do this all as root btw)

Dear Payne,

If you have already changed your /etc/lilo.conf you just need to write

[expert] KDE-1.1.2 Miscellaneous problems

1999-12-28 Thread Stephen P. Molnar, Ph.D.

I have just installed Mandrake/Helios on my K6-2/300 and am using the KDE
desktop only.

I have several questions.

I have installed and configured kwvdial (as root, initially). It dials
out, connects to my ISP and stays connecte, but every app that I try,
Netscape mail tool and XFMail, as two examples, gives me an unknown host
error message. I'm sure that it must be something really simple that I've
failed to do, but I don't know what.

I'm using Netscape Communicator v4.7 (used it pre-Helios without any
problems) and put an icon on the icon bar. When I attempt to open it using
the icon it opens and immediatly closes, and generates
/usr/local/netscape/lock. If I then click on the icon again I get the
usual already running message and it opens and stays open.. I can open it
with Alt-F2 /usr/local/netscape/netscape without this sort of behavior.

Assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

[expert] Asking about kernel

Dear all (specially Mdk team also oxygen tester),

I'm using mdk 6.1 now. I was try to compile the 2.2.13
(from kernel.org) and use the ide patch (cause my Ali 15XX).

But, after i compiled kernel, kppp said my kernel not support
ppp. But if i check there was a ppp.o under the
/lib/modulexx/newone. So now i back to the original 2.2.13-7

After i compare with the 2.2.13-7mdk, i fount that the modules
config file has many entry, rather than mine. Why ? Any idea ?

Also i now try to install the new kernel from oxygen.
What is the different from kernel with this word at the name :
secure, fb, linus ? Which one must i use ? Has it support
Ali 15XX ?

Thanks for your attention.

It seems that ark program (archiver) is broken: when I open

Is this fixed in some of the future versions, and if yes, in

[expert] Radius

1999-12-28 Thread Ramon Gandia

Right now I have an overloaded server, running Radius, my
accounting program, Web, FTP and mail.

I need to separate these functions, but of course they all
need authentication.

I have thought of rsync or NIS, but would perhaps like to see
if RADIUS can be made to work. Here is what I want, as an
example.

My Web server, www.nook.net, requires that my users be able
to FTP to and from it to load their web pages. This is no
problem as they are on the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow
files.

Instead, I would like to remove their entries from these
files, and have the authentication be done against a remote
Radius server, which will contain their passwords (either
on the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files, or on the
/etc/raddb/users file). In other words, if the Radius
server can authenticate remote logins from the terminal
servers, it should also be able to authenticate logins to
other computers.

What I need is a Radius authentication CLIENT module that
would work with RedHat/Mandrake linux. I have not been
able to locate any such. All I see is Radius servers,
but no clients.

Can anyone help me in locating something like this?

I have just done the same thing, ie. Star Office 5.1 on Mandrake 6.1
No problem, its fresh in my mind :-)

First open the Star Office ( if you downloaded it) archive to wherever
you want it put
If you want several users to be able to use it run setup /net as root
otherwise just run setup as a user
Answer the questions which will be asked of you
If doing a setup /net you will; need to now log in as user
go to the new installed location ( /usr/local/Office51) by default and
find the bin directory
run setup from there, answer another load of questions
When done
start it from
/home/useraccount/Office51/bin/soffice

this should all work on a standard Mandrake 6.1
Hope it helps

I have not seen such either. We have used rdist to push updates from a

could use the PAM

You can have numerous "items" in your ONE line append file. Here is an example
of one I use.

append="mem=128M hdc=ide-scsi"
Just Hit the Space bar and add the next item.

Re: [expert] Radius

1999-12-28 Thread Jean-Michel Dault

This is the problem of every ISP, and I haven't found a way around it yet.
But it's on my work schedule.

NIS is not secure, because it lets you "ypcat" the /etc/shadow file,
unless you make big modifications to it. In other words, don't even think
about it.

Radius authentification would be doable under PAM. The problem is, you
still need /etc/password to get the location of the users directories. It
would be okay for mail though.

On my systems, I had to heavily modify Radius to accept the expiration
date in the shadow file, and to check is the shell is in /etc/shells, to
give access to mail only and not dialup for some users. Radius lacks many
features unfortunately...

There is a "passwdd" software on freshmeat that lets you synchronize
password files. I haven't had the time to check it out yet. If you do try
it, i'd like to get your comments about it.

I remember seeing a Radius module for PAM, but I don't remember where I
saw it. Anyways, you'd still have problems with the users directory...
