What are you trying to accomplish? If your mdk box that hosts VmW/Win is
communicating with your LAN then the Win guest will be able to as well
using bridged networking in VmW.

tail /var/log/messages, you probably need to setup a new interface and
zone in shorewall. VMWare's SMB stuff is in a separate directory from
Mandrake's and can run concurrently.

[expert] VMWare and Win4Lin included in 9.2

2003-10-17 Thread Joeb
Does anyone have any info on the VMWare and Win4Lin that is included
with the boxed sets of 9.2? Specifically, are they functional demos,
full function apps, etc.? Also, what about the licensing? Is it just
the app that is included and a $399 license still needs to be purchased
(at least for VMWare)?

Just curious.

Haven't seen this one. But in the past it is fully functional time
bombed versions of the product. Only advantage is that if you get it up
and running and decide to buy... you don't have to re-install.

Problem #2: Pinging from guest: Destination unreachable

Problem #3: I have to setup a static route from host to guests. Shouldn't

Correct workaround?
1. I turned off martian logging in firewall.
2. My bad. I forgot that I set up the firewall to drop all ICMP. Now, they can

3. I have to specifically set up a static route from host to guests. Now, from

Are they the correct solutions?

RE: [expert] VMware Martian Source (solved?)

2003-10-07 Thread Jack Coates
martian packets have source addresses that don't belong on the network
they came from -- they're an indication of misconfiguration or mischief
(e.g. spoofing). With VMWare in the mix, it probably means that you've
enabled bridging, then forcibly set VMWare's bridged interface to a
network address that doesn't belong on the network that VMware is
bridging too.

So don't do that :-)

Problem #3: I have to setup a static route from host to guests. Shouldn't
 vmware make it automatically?

 Correct workaround?
 1. I turned off martian logging in firewall.
 2. My bad. I forgot that I set up the firewall to drop all ICMP. Now, they
 can
 ping each other :)
 3. I have to specifically set up a static route from host to guests. Now,
 from
guests, I can access the internet, etc.

 Are they the correct solutions?

OOOps forgot to mention. cp the .config to config and then copy the
config file you use (in /boot) to ./.config before making dep (probably
not needed but it ensures that the config for the kernel you use matches
the config in the dir.)

[expert] VMWare 4 and USB scanner

2003-08-14 Thread Miark
I'm trying to use a USB scanner in VMWare, but it reports
that Linux won't let it go:

The specified device appears to be claimed by another driver
(usbscanner) on the host operating system which means that the device
may be in use. VMware Workstation cannot safely take control of the
device until the host driver is unloaded.

How do I get rid of the usbscanner driver, and is there a way
to temporarily disable it?

That is is the problem. I have the smp kernel running and when you try
to build the kernel, it complains that it did not match with the kenerl
version. It is looking at the kenerl without the smp tacked on. The
version information is correct but no smp version.

Re: [expert] VMWARE $

Try to set extraversion tag to empty in /usr/src/linux/Makefile to make
it match to original version of kernel sources. Chances are it will work
then... (happened to me ;-))

By the way, I have MDK 8.2 so don't know how it is in 9.x, but Todd
Lyons told me that thought it was going to be made 'easier' in MDK9.1:
1) Kernel modules are compiled against /usr/src/linux/include
(provided by kernel-source-xxx.rpm)
2) Applications compile against /usr/include (provided by
kernel-headers, that were the headers used to compile glibc)

This seems to be common for all linuxes not only MDK. So if the first
paragraph does not suits you, try to see if your glibc and
kernel-headers versions are the same.

Let's see what comes...

[expert] VMWARE $

2003-08-01 Thread Joseph Loo
I have mandrake 9.1 install on my system. I am running the smp version
and trying to get vmware 4.0 up an running. Everytime I try to do the
vmware-config.pl, it prompts for the include headers. There is the
default /usr/src/linux/include. Everytime it tries to configure it, it
come back with wrong kernel version. Does anyone know where I need to
point the header file to get the smp version of the kenerl?

Not trying to push you out, or, blow you off. But (and it would be
helpful if you would please.) Could you post this question in the
cooker. Since that list is specifically aimed at the beta (and
pre-beta) MDK distro, chances are better someone can actually fix your
problem. Also since it is an important program (vmware) I'm sure they
would be interested in knowing about the problems you are having.

Manolis,

there. Since I don't have much in the way of USB here.

2003-06-11 Thread manolis
I installed vmware for linux in my mandrake 9.1.
I want to use it for eVC for pocketpc programming with my ipaq.

I have a problem:
sometimes the vmware machine when I plug in my ipaq doesn't respond quickly
and the device mounts itshelf in the hardware list of mandrake as scanner
(lol).
After that vmware responds that the device is being used by system and cannot
be locked for win98 virtual machine.
the question is how to prevent this? how can I disable the mounting of ipaq in
linux as scanner, or how do I unmount it simply?

thanks in advance...

Are you updating from Cooker regularly? If so it may be that the src

Has anyone gotten vmware to compile modules for the secure kernel in

/usr/src/linux/include is different from the running kernel
(ie. 2.4.18-6.4mdk vs. 2.4.18-6.4mdksecure).

So I try to build the modules manually, in /usr/lib/vmware/modules, as
this worked well for me with 8.1 when it wasn't building properly, but
now when I run vmware-config.pl it doesn't find any suitable drivers
and I've tried saving them as up-2.4.18-6.4mdksecure-8.2, smp-*, and
even secure-*, with the SMP option enabled in the properties file
because it looks as though the secure kernels are built for SMP.

On another note, is there a performance hit on a single CPU system
running the secure kernel with SMP code enabled?

instead. They probably point to the same place but maybe the test is
looking in the path.

RE: [expert] VMWare 3.0 and mdk 8.2

2002-03-25 Thread Baines, Dominic

VMware and mdk8.2 have similar problems with RedHat 7.2 in
that the modules do not 'appear' to be present. Make sure you have the
current kernel source libraries installed and rerun vmware-config.pl
pointing to that directory. Worked for me...

If you include a capture of the errors I'll see if they
are the same as those I obtained ...

which are not out and do not compile when it tries to compile them
itself. Plus seeing that I'm just trying out VMWare for the first time
and picked up an evaluation copy I noticed on their website that they
said that they do not support folks like me and their self help doesn't
help. Has anyone been able to make VMWare work on mdk 8.2 or have any
idea of what is going on with VMWare's planned support for mdk 8.2?

I'm going to be rather unhelpful by saying that I have an 8.2 system
that it running VMWare 3.0 with no problem. Nor did I have to do
anything facny, just installed and fired it up.

BTW, the sensivity to the kernel is overstated. There was a problem
going from 2.2 to 2.4, but there were some failry big changes in 2.4

I succesfully used the same verison of VMWare at work on a system that
migrated from Mdk6.0 to 6.1 to 7.1 to 7.2 all with no difficulty.

yes, i made it work thanks to Bill Kenworthy's advice on newbie's list.

Note that you may need to re-add them if you want to compile a kernel.

dont forget there's also the product from netraverse, win4lin, much lower
cost than vmware, but with disadvantage, of the kernel patches being a
long way behind the current kernels

A long way? I don't think so.

There is a kernel available as a drop-in-replacement for the stock Mandrake
8.1 kernel as well as patches for more recently released kernels.

If the patches for Win4Lin were integrated into the kernel by default,
keeping up would be much easier. 8)

No DirectX support = no cool games. WINE is working on DirectX support,

[expert] VMWare and INet sharing.

2001-07-30 Thread DStevenson

Has anyone set up a VMware Win98 VM on Mandrake 8.

I have Win98 running no problem, but I need Windows to share the internet
connection with the host box. I have set up VMware with bridged networking, I
have even installed the shared inet connection software disk that WInME
creates to allow Win9x machine to share connections. Was this a good idea? I
have set up the inet sharing feature of LM8. I have the following message in
my syslog which gives a FAIL warning on system boot.

ipvsadm: Are you sure that IP Virtual Server is supported by the kernel?

Does this have anything to do with the problem? I am using the stock kernel
as installed by LM8.

The ipaddress is 192.168.0.1 of the host, Vmachine is 192.168.0.2, the
gateway for the Vmachine is 192.168.0.1. DNS is disabled. Do I need to do
more setting up of the LM config or this a Win problem?

The wife still insists on using Windoze, so I would prefer her to use VMware
as opposed to muti-booting.

Thanks in advance.

Dave.

For running it you need:
Installed Samba package, especially smbclient and nmblookup utility.

So what do I do with LinNeighborhood if I still need samba installed?
Then I can use webmin which is already installed and configured.

[expert] vmware and virtual samba

2001-07-19 Thread Wolfgang Bornath

Hi,

installed host os: Mandrake 8.0
installed vmware: eval version of Vmware Workstation

Installation of vmware was easy as a pie, also the following installation
of the guest os: WIndows98.

The very last reason for Windows on my pc is gone now: I can access my
digital camera through the special Windows-software running in vmware.

So far so good. Now I set up the virtual kind of samba which comes with
vmware. The help file says that the host system does not need samba
installed. Everything will be configurated from vmware. I did that.

Now, could someone point me to a howto or similar where I can read how to
get my pictures from the virtual disk in vmware into my linux tree?

Pls don't answer Through Samba b/c that's just my question ;-)

[expert] VMWare configuration

2001-06-30 Thread plsusa

I have my machine set up to dual boot NT and Linux Mandrake 8.0 (2
seperate hard drives).
While trying to configure my eval version of VMWare, I saw you could access
your NT drive (hda) for the guest OS.

What configuration choices do I want to use? My choices listed are below,
with the option of setting each to No Access, Read Only, and Read/Write.

Which should I use for each? (With all of them selected as read only, VMware
starts to boot, and gives me a single line that says LILO 21.7).

(The following is the NT drive)
hda0 (mbr)
hda1 (Win95 Extended)
hda2 (Dos 16 bit=32M)
hda5 (Dos 16 bit=32M)

NOTE: The NT drive is 20 gig, with drive C: using FAT, and Drive D: using
NTFS)

(The following is the Linux drive)

hdb0 (mbr)
hdb1 (Linux native)
hdb2 (Linux extended)
hdb5 (Linux swap)
hdb6 (Linux native)

NOTE: The Linux drive is 40 gig)

Anyone able to assist?

[expert] VMware raw disk -- Full Instructions

2001-05-28 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

WARNING: TRY ONLY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

The subject of using raw disks, that is, real disks, in VMware has been
raised on our list a number of times, including by myself. The detailed
information is readily available in detail from VMware's Help menu.

I clicked on Help in VMware. This brought me to VMware's instructions, which
include FULL AND DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS on how to configure a virtual machine
for a raw disk. Here are the two sites. I already mentioned the second site
last time, but the first site is the crucial one. I just discovered it. I am
sure that you'll have no problem figuring everything out from the information
provided. Even I understood most of it quite well. It's the technical
implementation that I am afraid of. I don't want to make a stupid mistkae
that will trash my newly installed Win98.

RE: [expert] VMware 2.4 release candidate

Hi Ian,
I downloaded it and got it up yesterday on LM8 with no problems at all.
I've used their prior versions and never had a problem that wasn't covered
in their docs (excellent, btw). No support for my SBLive! in my guest OS
but that's probably Creative's fault. I recommend VMWare highly.
Performance was a little sluggish with KDE running at the same time. I
switched to Windowmaker and it's great. Only issue with VMWare I'd warn you
about is its voracious appetite for RAM- try to give your guest OS 200+ megs
if possible. RAM's cheap though.
Feel free to pass on any troubles you're having.

take a look at the version of VMware you are running. There are issues with
some Unix guest OS that were not resolved in 2.0.2 that supposedly are in
2.0.3 and 2.0.2 comes with 7.2. There are also problems with XFree86 4 and
it is not yet supported but works as long as you don't full screen it.

I believe that 2.4 support is only just coming out

I was suspecting that. There is something up with my install? I mean, I
can't even install vmware anymore, the program vmware either hangs or

ran before also segment, even after recompiling , even with kgcc. I just
can't figure it out and it is driving me crazy!

Funny, I have used VMware 2.0.3 on Mandrake 7.2 with 2.4x kernel,
 Mandrake 8.0 with 2.4.3 kernel and Debian 2.2 with 2.4.2 kernel. NT4
runs fine in all these situations. (Don't know about Redhat 7.1)

When a company says that a distribution is not supported it doesn't
always mean that it won't work, just means that they haven't checked it
out to the point where they would officially endorse its use.

I guess this is a case of YMMV (your mileage may vary)

I realize this. However, my point is that it was working fine with 2.4.2
before me messing with 8.0. Now, vmware will segment out with 2.4.2 AND
2.4.3 with the 8.0 final. I know it is a VMware problem, but I just want
to know what is going on. If I wanted just push the button and have
things work w/o knowing why, I would use windows (chills as I say it).

You mentioned that you installed vmware many times. Did you just

Re: [expert] VMware 2.0 and Mandrake 8.0.

2001-04-23 Thread Nima S. Panahi

I tried both. But to not matter! I believe I have found the problem (at
least a big part of it). Among the many reinstalls I did, I did a bare
install with X and KDE and the such. It seemed to actually work then ( I
did not install anything from the second CD except for the kernel source,
at this was suggested on the list before). On of these fresh installs
allowed both VMware gsx and VMware workstation to work! Even thought it
was extremely slow, I started adding packaged one by one as needed. Well,
I was recompiling a software, and it needed libsafe. As soon as I
installed libsafe, vmware did the exact same crashing and hanging. Infact,
many other programs, such as cksfv, also segmented! I feel SO much better
now that I can run VMware and have applications not segment on me!

You mentioned that you installed vmware many times. Did you just

the rest. When i try starting VMware it all goes fine, but when coming to
the lilo point it just hangs (i think it may be the grafical lilo-thing
 that is messing it up)

Lars, I am somewhat confused. It sounds like you are using mdk as your
host, and W2K as your guest OS inside of Vmare, inside of mdk. I have not
used mdk v8 yet, but given your above remarks, something is wrong. VMWare
does not start by using lilo at all. it is started, once it is installed
in mdk, inside of VMware, from the command line in your personal dir.
Lilo has nothing to do with Vmware, and is just used for your host OS, to
get Linux and whatever other OS you use started. If you installed W2K
inside of VMware as a guest, open VMware from the command line, then open
W2K from within VMware. Also, I do not know if it works with the 2.4
kernel yet. I use it with 2.17 in mdk 7.2.

Re: [expert] VMware 2.0 and Mandrake 8.0.

2001-04-22 Thread Nima S. Panahi

I am have same problem. I cannot, for the life of me, install a new vmware
machine because of the lilo problem. I have not tried grub or to see what
exactly the problem is, since I just kept using the old ones. Oh yeh, the
problem started when I got 8.0beta2 and was there for beta3. Now, with 8.0
final, vmware segments and does not run anyways. This 8.0 final release is
not as half as stable as Mandrake's other final releases. It feels like a
beta or maybe even an alpha.

[expert] VMWare XFree86 4.0.2 driver source code

2001-03-13 Thread William Bouterse

I don't know if this is useful but was curious whether MandrakeSoft
has any plans to include these drivers or maybe has already?

To quote from the Com[pany Announcement:

NOW YOU CAN USE XFREE86 4.0.2 IN A VIRTUAL MACHINE
In response to customer requests, VMware has ported our XFree86 3.3.6
guest X server to XFree86 4.0.2. Additionally, we are releasing the
XFree86 driver source code back to mainstream XFree86.org and
publishing the programming interface. This means that publicly
available distributions of Linux will eventually include VMware
software's drivers, making it easier to use VMware software with
guest Linux operating systems. For more information about using
XFree86 4.0.2 in a virtual machine, see

[expert] vmware

2000-11-15 Thread Michael R. Batchelor

Has anyone tried, successfully or unsuccessfully, to get VMWare up,
running, and doing useful work on 7.2? I'm getting ready to build a new
workstation, and I'd rather not have to experiment more than I must. I'm
perfectly happy to use an older distribution if 7.2 and Xfree86 4 create
too many problems.

Thanks,
Michael

I had VMware running great under the 7.2 beta. I have since removed VMware
since upgrading to 7.2 final. BTW I was running Windows 98 on a virtual
disk with IP forwarding and using Samba to have access to my files from
the virtual machine.

The one suggestion that I would make is to not use the built-in VMware
Samba server and properly configure/setup the version of Samba that comes
with Mandrake.

DGA is dependent on your video driver. If you video driver does not support
DGA you're outta luck. Likewise, if you have an Nvidia card and are running
the Nvidia drivers DGA will not work either with Vmware.

Donate your $99 to Plex86. Opensourced and they are funded by Mandrake no
less.

 What is Plex86?

Plex86 is formally FreeMWare. It is an open-source
attempt at virtualization. I guess it will eventually
be as capable as VMWare. I have been following for a
year and a half, and not much progress has been made
(from a user standpoint) I am sure they have made
leaps and bounds, but still no usable product yet.

www.plex86.org for more information.

VMWare is still the only thing out there that does
what it does, and very well. Unfortunately, this is
NOT a linux project, and in fact they are more allies
with MS. Unfortunately as well, is that they can
basically charge what they want. I bought a license
on the old 1.1 version, and was quite happy. However,
little did I know, that the license is only good for
Major revisions. So, 2 months later, they went to
2.x, and my license no longer worked. That was the
end of my investment to VMWare.

Re: [expert] VMware

2000-11-07 Thread Roel Schroeven

 What is Plex86?

Plex86 is an open source (GPL, I think) alternative to VMWare. From the
website (www.plex86.org):
"The goal of the Plex86 project is to create an extensible open source PC
virtualization software program which will allow PC and workstation users to
run multiple operating systems concurrently on the same machine.

Plex86 will run as much of the operating system and application software
natively as possible, the rest being emulated by the PC virtualization
monitor.

A highly visible and often requested use, would be to allow for Windows
software to be run inside of GNU/Linux or other UNIX like operating system.
This gives users a migration path towards UNIX, allowing them to run legacy
software until native ports or alternatives are available. It also provides
a transitionary step for software vendors who plan to port their product to
UNIX, but have not yet done so. Users could buy the Windows version product
and run it at near native speeds on UNIX, using Plex86, until a UNIX native
version is ready.

By virtue of Plex86 being an open source project right from day one, Plex86
can also be an extremely useful tool for operating systems development,
debugging, instrumentation and profiling. Many compile and run time options
can be added, such that more control of the software being run inside the
Plex86 environment can be offered to an OS developer, for instance. This
will provide much more flexibility and control than is offered in a
commercial product where you do not have access to the source code, such as
VMware. "

The project is still in a pre-release stage. Just a few weeks ago, they
succeeded in booting Linux within Plex86.

Cheers,
Roel Schroeven
