Randall is correct. I use ES6 along with Babel and Webpack happily with my
React coding. If you want to dig in and get your hands dirty, check out
Gluestick (https://www.drivenbycode.com/getting-started-with-gluestick/) .
It is an excellent (IMHO) CLI tool for scaffolding out a React site to get
started and learn how to use the platform.

Re: [flexcoders] Using Squiggly under Oracle's Weblogic 11g

2013-10-03 Thread Nick Collins
My first though is that it is likely something to do with the context of
the application. Likely you are not using the WAR as the root context, so
that will change the pathing. Your best bet is to use relative paths if
possible .

I'm working on a Flex 3 project that incorporates the Squiggly library for
spell checking. On its own, it works as desired. When I try to package the
application as a war file for deployment under Oracle's Weblogic 11, I
cannot get the app to work. The problem appears to be the location of the
dictionary files; I've tried putting the 'dictionaries' directory in a top
level 'assets' directory, I've used a 'resources' directory, I've even
tried putting the directory (and the AdobeSpellingConfig.xml file) in the
WEB-INF directory, but with no luck. Anybody out there have any success
 doing something similar?

Re: [flexcoders] Compiling and debugging against a remote Coldfusion server

2013-01-28 Thread Nick Collins
Again, to kind of echo what Brendan said, if this guy can't figure out
simple remoting to a Coldfusion server, I would question my choice.
Coldfusion is by far the simplest, most plug and play remoting to Flex
there is, and there is plenty of documentation available showing you
exactly how to do it. The one caveat with working with a remote server is
that you need to make sure you configure your channelset if you are setting
up your remoting in Actionscript as opposed to using the MXML tag.

On Mon, Jan 7, 2013 at 4:58 PM, Brendan Meutzner bmeutz...@gmail.comwrote:

Do you have a code repository for the ColdFusion content setup? (ie.
 Subversion, CVS, TeamSite, etc...)

I have never debugged against a remote ColdFusion server, but it looks
 possible:

 http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ColdFusionBuilder/Using/WS0ef8c004658c1089-31c11ef1121cdfd6aa0-7fef.html

You'll need to have RDS enabled on your remote server... instructions here
if you already have CF installed... I am not sure if you need to have
included it during the ColdFusion install, or if you can simply enable
 after the fact.

 http://helpx.adobe.com/coldfusion/kb/disabling-enabling-coldfusion-rds-production.html

If you have a code repository, then you could check out your central CF
code to any development or production machine allowing you to keep that
common set of files you desire. Then you can have your development
versions of ColdFusion using this code, and allowing you to setup the debug
environment locally. To my knowledge, you're not going to be able to run
MS Access on the Mac environment, however, that's not a big deal... just
host the MS Access content on a remote server, and setup your local CF
development version to have a datasource pointing to the remote database.

I use Mac for my development environment, and target Windows and Linux
production servers. Having the code repository allows me to develop
locally with my Mac environment, with local CF, database and Flex
content... when I'm ready, I simply synchronize with repository and then do
the same on my production versions to get the most up to date code.
Setting up the local Mac dev environment with CF and Flex is very straight
forward. You use the same services-config.xml, remoting-config.mxml files
as you have on the production server to define end points for RemoteObject
calls, so everything in seamless when the code hits the server. In your
Flex project properties, you target your local version of the
services-config.xml file (which sits in the
.../Coldfusion8/wwwroot/WEB-INF/flex-config directory locally) and when the
application compiles, it uses the defined configuration here. Once it is
on the server, you have the same version of the file running on your
ColdFusion instance and everything is fine.

In short, take the time and make the effort to get a proper development
version running, and don't try to develop against remote servers.
Regardless of Windows or Mac, you want all of your developers to use
remote development environments. I've worked on teams with mixed OS
environments like this, and it's possible to do.

If you're interested, and have the budget, I can spend a couple hours with
you to get the right environment setup. All of the Flex development I've
done since 2004 is against ColdFusion backends and I'm more than familiar
with it. If you think we can solve this with general questions via this
forum, then I'm happy to help here as well... but there's only so much you
can solve with generalizations vs. actually seeing your setup and being
 able to help hands on.

I hope this helps a bit, and feel free to continue to ask questions...

Re: [flexcoders] Why most Flex Developer job ads ask now for Knowledge in Java??

I think you should have a functional knowledge of several backend languages
with which you might interface. Java of course, is the biggie, but also
Ruby, C#, Coldfusion, maybe Python... which is not to say that I think it is
necessary to have experience architecting the entire back end from scratch.
You should, however, know enough to be able to read the code given to you
and know what you need to do to interface with it.

For serious desktop solutions i would consider air, because is really

Personally, I'm not all that concerned about Flex Builder running on Linux,
in and of itself. Now if they ported the Creative Suite as well, I would be
totally psyched. Unfortunately, as long as CS is only available on Windows
or OSX, I'm going to be tied to those platforms.

That being said, for those who want to code on Linux, IntelliJ IDEA is an
excellent editor, and feature for feature, FDT will have a very hard time
competing with it with their current pricing. IDEA is $250 for a single
developer license, and that includes MXML support, integrated debugger, Flex
Unit integrated with the IDE, etc. To get the same features in FDT, you'd
have to pay more than 3X that.

features that Windose Flexbuilder has except that Flexbuilder Linux never
worked right even though it was crippled.

I have never used FDT but I have heard it works pretty well.

If people are having a hard time getting Java software to run
 cross-platform then I question why.

The countless other Eclipse plugins I use don't have a 2 year lag between

In this particular case AIR was updated pretty well right on our shipping

Following the recent update to AIR runtime 1.5.2 I'm experiencing some
issues with the built in app updater on windows platforms tha
t I've not seen prior to this release.
 I'm using flash.desktop.Updater.Updater.update() directly on a downloaded
 .air update package.

on windows Vista and windows 7, the update runs , but suffers a GUI freeze
and eventually needs to be forcibly stopped via task mana
 ger.
The new update is actually installed, but it seems that there is some
difficulty after that, I'm guessing with removing temp files c
 reated in that process.
I've attached a copy of .airappinstall.log taken after force quitting the
update installer (Which had run for twenty minutes - norma
ly it would be complete in one or two)

on WIndows XP, everything appears to be fine, but a temp file is left in
 [installDirectory]\META-INF\AIR.
This is also the case in vista/7, upon inspection this temp file contains
 our publisherID.
Unfortunately, if you uninstall the application then this temp file gets
left behind, meaning a subsequent install of the applicatio
n is unable to install to the same directory unless you manually delete
 this stray temp file.

Unfortunately, when I create a very basic app to demonstrate the problem
everything seems to work fine - I only seem to be getting t
his on our somewhat larger commercial products.

Any ideas? Where do I go from here?

Let me know if there is any more information I can provide that would be
 helpful

 Many thanks,

You might put something like the following code in a preinitialize event
handler:

const reUrl:RegExp =
/(http|https):\/\/(([^:]+)(:([...@]+))?@)?([^:\/]+)(:([0-9]{2,5}))?(\/([\w#!:.?+=%...@!\-\/]+))?/;

const appUrl:String = Application.application.url;
const parts:Array = reUrl.exec(appUrl);
if (!parts) throw new Error(Invalid URL:  + appUrl);

if (parts[1] == http )
{
const channels:XMLList = ServerConfig.xml..channels.channel;
for (var channel:String in channels)
{
if
(channels[channe...@type==mx.messaging.channels.SecureAMFChannel)
{
channels[channe...@type=mx.messaging.channels.AMFChannel;
   }
}
}

This will, on the preinitialize event, grab the url the app is being called
from, parse it with a regular expression, check to see if it's being called
from http rather than https, and modify the channels accordingly to operate
on a regular AMFChannel instead of a SecureAMFChannel.

Well, if you really want to develop Flex on Linux, you could always check

I had something similar happen where I could no longer access the

Re: [flexcoders] Smallest filesize of a swf in Flex 3 is larger then Flex 2?

2009-03-17 Thread Nick Collins
A big part of that reason is that when you attach any library, be it
the SDK or an external SWC, as a RSL, it is going to increase the size
of a singular app. The reason is that when a library is specified as
an RSL, the ENTIRE library gets loaded, not just the parts that are
needed, since it doesn't know what classes will be needed.
Additionally, RSLs are all loaded at Frame 1, and are mandatory
(meaning all RSLs are required to be loaded), increasing the load time
if they haven't been downloaded previously.

Where you see the major gains with RSLs is when you are using them
across multiple applications, because rather than re-download the RSL,
it will pull the RSL from the browser cache, speeding the load time,
although it is still loading more classes than otherwise. For this
reason RSLs are usually a bad idea for a single application, because
it will actually have a smaller size all compiled into a single SWF,
and loading bits of the application via modules, which are only loaded
as needed.

Nick

 Hi Flexcoders,

It is always claimed that by caching framework.swz of Flex 3, the swf size
is always the smaller. However. from the generated linked-report. in Flex 3,
some classes like RSLloader and some ResourceBundle classes are being added,
which actually increase the swf size.

Since my application is making up of first loading a shared library, and
then upon runtime, it loaded other very small modules. These modules are
making up of very small file size (a few k byte), the overhead added by
these Flex3 loaders and bundles has largly increase the TOTAL application
size by a huge amount (cause there are hundreds of this kind of small
modules when summing up the little increase of this overhead, it becomes M
byte). The start up time is down a bit (loading the smaller library and
smaller init app), but the overall brandwidth consumpt much more now.

So is there any way to trim off those overhead? Or I need to compile those
smaller modules by a Flex 2 compiler?

 Anyone have any idea?

 1. How interested are you in using a Code Generation Service (Software

 2. How interested in the service would you be if it supported more

 3. Which other technologies, platforms, languages, or frameworks would
you like to see it support? It currently supports the technologies that
I use and a lot of the companies I have worked for use but I can easily

 4. How much would this service be worth to you or your company?

Thanks for your help and have a good day.

[flexcoders] Saving Typed Objects with AIR

I'm trying to use the AIR file libraries to write an actionscript object and
it saves it just fine but it saves it as just a type of Object. Is there a
way where I can save the actionscript objects, yet maintain their typing?

[flexcoders] Drag and Drop between NativeWindows

2008-02-26 Thread Nick Collins
Does anybody have any examples of being able to drag from one native
window to another? I've tried both the DragManager and the Native
Drand and Drop functionality, but neither seem to work for this case.
Whenever my dragging leaves the window, it cancals the drag.

Re: [flexcoders] Re:Drag and Drop issues

I've got it working... you have to make sure there is a background, which
can just have it's alpha set to 0, but it needs to be there for the
component to register the event.

I haven't noticed a 'z-order' property on the Flex components, but I would
have though that would be what was needed to bring components to the 'top'
or 'front'... maybe the alpha value puts a wonkiness into that. The hit
test would have to be shared in proportion to the alpha channel value
 no?

[flexcoders] Drag and Drop issues

2008-02-20 Thread Nick Collins
I've got an application I'm working on where I need to be able to drag
things onto a Canvas, and sometimes into containers that are children of the
canvas.

The problem I'm having is that when I have another container inside the
canvas, it doesn't register the dragEnter event, even though I have added an
event listener for that event to the component. Instead, only it's parent
dispatches the dragEnter event.

How can I get the child components to register when the user drags over
them, versus the parent canvas?

Re: [flexcoders] do you need CS Degree to get a job?

2008-02-20 Thread Nick Collins
I'm going to throw my 2p in, for what it's worth. In my experience, it
depends largely on the type of employer you're applying to. If you're trying
to get into a smaller boutique shop (think Universal Mind, Cynergy,
EffectiveUI, etc.) which in my opinion are some of the coolest places to
work, a degree matters less if you got the skills, and can demonstrate them.
If you're trying to get into a corporation, the degree becomes nearly
imperative, unless you know somebody inside that can get you in front of the
hiring manager directly. Basically, it comes down to whether or not you have
to go through an HR department that really doesn't know or care what it is
you do, or what your capabilities are, so long as you look good on paper.
Some companies have it as corporate policy. I know I've been bitten before
where the hiring manager actually wanted to hire me, but HR wouldn't let him
because company policy dictated that anyone in that kind of position have at
least a bachelors degree. Just something to be aware of.

Re: Requests/Votes re Printing, PDF, MARS (was RE: [flexcoders] Re: Flex Feedback for the Future)

2008-02-14 Thread Nick Collins
Well, when I initially filed that ER in the bugbase, my intention was not
merely that of wanting client-side PDF generation. My desire was to have the
ability to create, and display those documents within a Flash application,
without needing to have the Acrobat Reader installed. I love the AIR
platform (which to my understanding still requires the Acrobat Reader to be
installed to work with PDF), but I'd like to be able to work with documents
like this in a web-based application as well. Think of it as the next
generation of FlashPaper (which I loved and am saddened to see all but
killed).

Re: [flexcoders] AIR - including other files

2008-02-04 Thread Nick Collins
First, you need to have the files somewhere within your source directory
(well, it's easiest anyway). When you're building the release version, once
you've entered in your information for the digital signing, click next
instead of Finish. It will now give you a list of files and directories to
include/exclude. Now, not all files can be included, but images and db files
can. I tried including a swc, but it wouldn't let me, so I had to change the
extension, then use the file API to have the application rename it back when
I wanted to work with it.

Bottom line, you can't.

For security reasons, email clients a) do not allow javascript to be

Re: [flexcoders] having trouble adding components to view using puremvc

I believe you need to create an ApplicationMediator, treating the
application as a view, in and of itself. You can then have that mediator
listen for your notification and respond accordingly.

I'm sending a notification when an item is chosen from a list.
What i want to happen is to attach a new component to the stage.

So I have my list throwing an event on select, the mediator receives it
 and kicks out a notification.
This is where I get tripped up, if I have a command that gets executed
when this notification is sent, it can create the new component but how
do I attach this new component to the stage?

It seems as though I have no reference anywhere, including in the
 facade, to the application mxml.

[flexcoders] Urgent need of Express Install help

I have been testing the Express Install feature of the Flash Player
with my Flex app, and am running into some major difficulties with
Firefox. I've been scouring the net and haven't had any luck finding a
solution, if there is one.

The Express Install is triggered properly, prompts the user, and when
OK is clicked, the new version is promptly downloaded. Once is is
downloaded, I get an Alert popping up saying it can't install the
update because Firefox is open. At first I'm disappointed because I
thought I wasn't supposed to have to restart the browser with Express
Install, but ok, whatever. I close the browser and it reopens, but not
to my Flex app. It opens to my default start page. So I put in the URL
to my flex app and again get prompted by the Express Install, it never
updated.

I'm thinking this may be a Firefox browser issue, but if anyone knows
what's going on, and a workaround I would be forever grateful.

All keyboard input and key-related ActionScript is disabled while in

When setting up a Flex project I can of course select the type. However,

Seems like the in the Flex properties for the project the Flex Server

I could import all the files to a newly created FDS project, but that
seems a bit unintuitive.

Re: [flexcoders] flex authenticating and sessions...

2007-04-02 Thread Nick Collins

The way I have been doing it, while admittedly probably not best, is this:

I have all my roles and user information in my database. When the user types
in their username and password, it is encrypted, sent to the CFC which
decrypts it, and runs a query against the database. If the authentication is
successful, it ecrypts and returns the users data (name, role, etc.) to the
flex frontend, which then decrypts it and displays the information they have
access to. The roles table of my database has flags for different sections
of the app, and it has to return a positive value to open up access to view,
or to edit, that section. The encryption key for the AES encryption is
stored in an external XML file and is read in when the app loads.
Additionally, I send the data via SSL.

Is it hacker-proof, probably not, but what is? It at least makes it enough
of a pain that I haven't had any problems.

How is user authentication and session management handled best in Flex?
Taking into
consideration the following:

* All business logic is server side and available only to an authenticated
user (and only the
components they have access to).
* Cannot reverse engineer the flash file to gain access to the server
side.
* Each server side call must be authenticated.
* Preferably the main application is not downloaded until the user is
authenticated.

I saw suggestions on authenticating the user and then storing the roles on
the client, this
seems very insecure, as the user could potentially write their own app and
stick roles in
that client side variable.

I got the few books on Flex that are out there, but none of them really
cover this critical
issue. Maybe I'm missing something basic?

That's probably because Flex is not a Creative Suite application. Neither is
Captivate, RoboHelp, Lightroom, or some other apps.

I don't really think Flex got the shaft though, because the new integration
with Flash CS3 for making components, plus Illustrator and Fireworks for
skinning, is really nice IMO... not quite where I'd like it yet, but
definitely a big step in the right direction.

It is part of the FB2 install, though the installer does not do it for you.
Assuming you're on Windows, if you look in your WINDOWS\Downloaded

Re: [flexcoders] Source formatting

I'm sure that's the case, and I'm not trying to trivialize the immense
amount of work that the FlexBuilder team put into the tool. I love it, and
by and large the code editing is heads and tails above the Flash IDE or
Dreamweaver, IMO. I just really like that feature, and am surprised that we
haven't seen anything even attempting it from either Adobe or the
OSS/Eclipse community.

If it's for a Data DVD with the data being hard-coded or XML on the disk,
sure you can do it with Flex 2. If you're wanting it to play in a standalone
DVD player, I'm afraid your only option would be to use a DVD authoring

}

but it's not working. Anyone know how I might be able to do this? Thanks

It would also be awesome to have ANT built in without having to have the JDT
installed. I don't really do Java, but love the power of ANT for building
projects.

Also, including an integrated XML editor with functionality like OxygenXML

The big one on my wish list though would be to update the Coldfusion
Application Wizard or create a new wizard that would generate ColdSpring
code for the CF side and Cairngorm based code for the Flex side. There's a
thread on FlexCoders about how getting rid of CreateObject in CF can improve
performance 10x, yet in the CF App Wizard it makes extensive use of
CreateObject. Including some of these things that have been learned would be
great.
