Re: [Framers] Can variables be defined to include characteristics (e.g., BOLD, OVERLINE, ITALIC)?

2024-03-07 Thread rick
Yes, as long as you define the desired formatting as FrameMaker Character
Formats. Then you can refer to them in your variable definitions inside of
angled brackets; for example:

Widget

The is a shortcut for Default Paragraph Font.

Greetings.
In a FM variable definition, is it possible to include character
characteristics such as bold, overline, italic, etc.?
Thanks in advance...

Re: [Framers] Back on Structured XML - stuck again

2024-03-01 Thread rick
Hi C2,

There are some fun things here, but I suggest that you post this on the
Adobe Community Forum for FrameMaker (forums.adobe.com, then search for
FrameMaker). There is not much action on this list anymore and I spend most
of my help time on the FrameMaker forum. I have some ideas that I will
respond with. Thanks.

Subject: [Framers] Back on Structured XML - stuck again

Hey all - it's been a long while since even using FrameMaker.

Quick Background:

The dev team supplies XML with most of the para content in element
attributes. I have an xsl script that breaks all those attributes as child
elements. I did this because I could not figure out how to get the attribute
values to print to a para format and use prefix/suffix rules.

Now the team is manually inserting line breaks and using /n to indicate a
soft return, but when read into FM, the /n prints and we a block of text. Is
there a way to address this in the xsl or RW rules?

The next question is with variables. A child element will make reference to
element values in another file. For example:

..$[Min]:$[Max]

There is a declaration in the main xml file:

(side note: my xsl will convert the above attributes to child elements, and
then my RW rules drop all of those elements for now so they do not add empty
space)

and there is a Variables.xml file:

..
..
..
..

How do I populate $[Min]:$[Max] with 1:4096?

The last item, the element above uses a prefix "Range:". I can apply
character formatting Bold, but what I really want to do is have "Range:" in
a right-aligned heading RunIn para format and then print the range value as
an indented format. The reason is that I can then have all of the colons
lined up for easier reading as I would many different heading RunIn texts.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks C2

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2019 and the limit of Windows 10?

2024-02-16 Thread rick
Hi Simon,

FrameMaker 2019 shipped with 32- and 64-bit versions. I don't know what
version you are using, but the 64-bit version might work.

Since you are using ExtendScript, an alternative approach may be to script
saving each component to XML individually then use XSLT to combine them.

Subject: [Framers] FrameMaker 2019 and the limit of Windows 10?

Hello Framers,

I have been investigating a problem reported by one of my customers.
They have 1 book file containing 1554 FrameMaker documents, plus 2
FrameMaker generated documents.

They have managed to publish their book file to PDF, but when they try
exporting the book to XML, FrameMaker crashes badly.

I have chopped the book up, and it appears that FrameMaker baulks after
processing around 700 files - sometimes with Internal Error, sometimes with
just hanging the app. A large number [>1400] of the FrameMaker documents
contain imported by reference graphics. Even with removing the mount point
of the graphics [so FrameMaker will show a gray box instead], and also with
setting the View > Hide Graphics option on each file,

I tried using ExtendScript to read content from each of the files, but after
approximately 710 files, I received the FrameMaker warning dialog:
Insufficient memory to display the dialog box. Close one or more windows and
try again.
i.e. Insufficient memory to display the dialog box. Close one or more
windows and try again.

According to Windows 10 [64-bit], the Task Manager indicates memory usage on
the workstation is 3.6Gb out of an available 12.1Gb.

Has anyone here experienced problems when dealing with such large book
files?

I need to have my remote contractor convert a Frame book from 2022 down to
2020 and I'm trying to find the easiest way to do that.

There are only about 34 files, but that would be a royal pain to do
one-by-one.

And no, I can't update to the Frame latest version. We have heavy security
protocols in place so Frame is only updated once every 2 years (2024 is the
next time we'll update across the company).

Re: [Framers] HELP: Appendix Numbering Issue on Deadline

Hi Alison,

You have to set your numbering at the book component level, not the document
level. Right-click on the components and set the numbering there and then
update the book.

That's not what I have in my other books, so no. I didn't try that.

Now that I have tried it, that sets the page number to A, not the heading
number.

But thanks, Alison

I'm having issues with the appendices in a book. No matter what I do, they
keep reverting from Appendix A and Appendix B, to Appendix 8 and Appendix 9.

I've tried configuring Format > Document > Numbering so it matches exactly

I have to publish this book tomorrow (Monday, November 20) and I'm tearing

Any suggestions?

Hi Rick,

It's probably me but the script isn't working in my Framemaker 2022.
(I had to create the "startup" folder) In fact, when I apply the script the
document becomes 'blank': I know the actions I do are still applied but I
can't see them. Only when I close the document and I get the Do you want to
save-message, I see the document underneath...

Side note: since the start of July we have an activation issue with almost
all older Framemaker versions (Framemaker 2017, 2015,...). Our IT and Adobe
are 'looking into it'. But I can't test your script with older versions
right now.

Thank you Mike! The issue is the behind the scenes switch to the Adobe PDF

computer, so I should be able to solve it by changing the default printer
driver to Adobe PDF.

Hi All,

FrameMaker changebars work well in text, but it is difficult to put a
changebar next to an entire table. I have a free scripting solution that
puts a nice changebar along the whole height of a table. Please see my Store
page for a screenshot and download link. As always, feedback is appreciated.

Re: [Framers] A free script for adding changebars to tables

2023-08-28 Thread rick
Hi Tom,

The script is failing and leaving you a blank screen. Try this: after you
quit and restart FrameMaker, open your document. Before running the script
choose View > Panels > Console. Run the script and when it fails, it should
write a message to the Console. Please send me the console message and I
will fix the script. Thank you very much for the feedback.

[Framers] Document reflows when saving to PDF

2023-08-24 Thread rick
I am saving a FrameMaker document to PDF and I get this message at the
Console:

The "Times" Font is not available.
"Times New Roman" will be used in this session.

It is causing the document to reflow. The font is not Times or Times New
Roman but Calibri. Querying the properties in FrameMaker and Acrobat show
that they are both Calibri 9 point. I have seen this message in the past,
but the reflow is a big problem for this project. Is there a setting that
will give me an exact FrameMaker to PDF text match?

Re: [Framers] Autonumber/autoincrement independent of paragraph style?

2023-07-17 Thread rick
You can't increment variables with counters. This may be a good candidate
for a script. It's not clear to me the use case for this, but if you contact
me offlist, I will be glad to look at it. Thanks.

I would try to tie it to a paragraph style, then make it a run-in paragraph
that doesn't cause a line break. Manually apply it where you want it, press
enter, then apply whatever style you need next.

Fiddly, but should work. Flies in the face of structured documentation, but
your use case seems to be inherently unstructured anyway.

Subject: [Framers] Autonumber/autoincrement independent of paragraph style?

I'm having a brain fart. Seems like this should be doable, but I'm missing
something.

I need a counter/variable that autoincrements, but NOT tied to a specific
paragraph style. This counter might appear in any number of different
paragraph styles and at different positions in the paragraph.

Variables seem like they should be the way to go, but it appears that there
isn't an auto-increment component to them, e.g., like when numbering
paragraphs or list elements.

All online resources I can find discuss autonumbering within the context of
the paragraph designer, but that's not what I need.

What am I missing?

Thanks,

-Dan

Win10, Frame 2020 (V 16.0.5.1096)
Two days I received a load of MIF files for 2 manuals from the translators
(LSP). Every file except one opened perfectly.
The LSP can open the file without a problem. As I can't, I have asked them
to re-create the file from their translation tools, and in the meantime, try
to save the MIF as an FM file and send me a copy.
I've looked at the MIF using MS Notepad and compared the start and end of
the file to one that opens just fine in Frame. I can't see any differences,
but I'm not exactly a MIF expert.
The one really weird thing is that when Frame tries to open the file, a
large screen of text is shown on the right-hand side of the screen (it looks
like maybe it the MIF content) before the file opens with absolutely no
visible content. I have a screenshot of that if anyone wants to answer me
offline.

[Framers] OT: Ride for Roswell 2023

2023-05-10 Thread rick
Hello Framers,

I am doing the Ride for Roswell again this year to raise money for cancer
research. I will be riding the 100 mile route again. I ride to honor the
memory of Bruce Foster, creator of the original Archive plugin. I also
celebrate Alexandra Duffy, a cancer survivor from our FrameMaker community.

I raise money by giving software in exchange for a donation of $25 or more.
Please take a look at my website and see if there is anything you need. I
also have some scripts that aren't out there so tell me what your
bottlenecks are and I may have something for you.

Thank you for your support over the years. The FrameMaker community is the
best!

Hi Johan,

I can't remember if 2015 had it, but is there a File > Publish command? If
so, see if the Publish pod has an XHTML option.

Hi folks

I am using the new feature for highlighting variables but I would like to
define custom colours because the options provided obscure the content of
the variable. Does anyone know of a way to add custom colours (or reduce the
opacity) to the list?

WIN 10 Enterprise, Frame 2020

Can you insert a manual line break in a Variable? If so, how?

Example Variable: "Electrolyser (E-Series: E30-E1000)".

I want to control where the Variable breaks to wrap it to the next line
(it's part of a right-aligned title that is too wide for the page).

I looked in the Frame manual, but the term "manual line break" only occurs a
handful of times and none of them are relevant.

Re: [Framers] Suppress XML Element Data

Hi C2,

If those elements have attributes you can use the Filter By Attribute
command to filter them out before you print or make a PDF. Then they will be
retained in the XML.

Subject: [Framers] Suppress XML Element Data

Hi Framers,

I have some XML elements with text data that I want to suppress or not
print. I discovered that I can use the rw-rules:

element "ClassName" drop;

But I want to retain the data when I save the XML file. I thought I could
make it an index but I could not figure it out. I was getting a message that
text data is not allowed.

That might not be a good approach anyway. I could use conditional text but
had similar issues setting up the EDD.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, C2

Subject: [Framers] Klaus, Rick, and Scott rock!

Hello, Framers,

Just wanted to give a huge thank-you to Klaus Daube. Rick Quatro, and Scott
Prentice for all their sharing of knowledge that makes using FrameMaker a
joy instead of a frustrating experience.

As I noted to the list a few weeks ago, we had been using Frame 7 forever
and were going to have to upgrade to the latest version. I was expecting to
not like it, but it turns out that I really like the new version. In getting
up to speed to see what was new, I had seen Klaus's Compendium that he
mentioned in the Framers list and I started reading it. It's fantastic! It
mentions all the inside information that only years of using Frame could
provide-much better than the official Frame users guide that only gives the
basics. The tips and videos mentioned in the compendium are so helpful.

I can't believe after using Frame for 30 years, I found out through a link
to Rick Quatro's website the answer to something that I never knew (I don't
know why I never asked the list about it): why the heck sometimes our books
included the GroupTitles IOM tag in the PDF bookmarks and other times it
didn't have the tag available to choose. I had dealt with it by setting up a
heading for A,B,Cs in the books to be able to include in bookmarks. Today, I
found the answer, as noted in Rick's site with attribution to Scott
Prentice:
http://frameautomation.com/setting-acrobat-bookmarks-for-a-book/#more-88

So a million thanks to Klaus, Rick, Scott, and all the other list members
who are willing to put in so much time and effort to help with Frame
questions and problems. Your generosity is amazing!

Re: [Framers] transitioning from Frame 7 to 2020

2022-04-22 Thread rick
Hi Winfried,

You can only programmatically "pull up" or "push down" to another version.
So, she would need to run my script on FrameMaker 2020 to pull the
FrameMaker 7 files up to the current version.

Hi Rick,

But she would need the script on FM 7, wouldn't she?
ExtendScript was introduced later.
And I do not know, if FrameScript was already available for FM 7.
On FM 2020 possibly an easy MIF wash.

Best regards

Is there a way to have the cross-reference to correctly reference the table

As Lynne said, because FrameMaker has a built-in, enterprise-level XSLT
processor, you can specify XSLT stylesheets on import and export as part of
your structured application.

Hi All, I'm not sure how to share the file contents wit the group here.

Simple question is how to break attribute values out into separate
paragraphs?

The XML element:

My EDD for the element:

Element (Container): ScpiCommand
General rule:
Suffixes
s
Attribute list
Name: ClassName String Optional
Name: ClassLongName String Optional
Name: ClassDescription String Optional
Name: String String Optional
Name: Overlapping String Optional
Name: Lockable String Optional
Name: Type String Optional
Format rules for first paragraph in element In all contexts.
Use paragraph format: SCPICommand
Text format rules
In all contexts.
Use paragraph format: Indented
Format rules for last paragraph in element In all contexts.
Use paragraph format: Indented
Prefix rules
In all contexts.
Prefix: <$attribute[String]> <$attribute[ClassDescription]>

The result comes out as a run-together paragraph using the SCPICommand
paraformat. I am just wanting to print the String and ClassDescription
attribute values.

[Framers] OT: FrameMaker Scripts and Ride for Roswell

2022-04-07 Thread rick
Hi All,

I am doing the Ride for Roswell again this year. This is a charity ride to
benefit the Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. I raise money by
providing FrameMaker scripts in exchange for a donation to the ride. Here is
a link to the donation page:

https://give.roswellpark.org/goto/rickquatro

For a donation of $25 or more, I will provide you with a site license for
one of my off-the-shelf scripts, including the source code. Or, if you have
an idea for a custom script, I may be able to provide you with a solution in
exchange for a larger donation.

For example, I just wrote an Acrobat JavaScript for my friend Lin Sims that
merges two bookmarks in her PDF. In FrameMaker, she has this:

Section 1
Introduction
.
Section 2
Installation
.

In the PDF, she gets this:

Section 1: Introduction
.
Section 2: Installation
.

This script could easily be customized for your documents. Be creative with
your ideas and let's see what we can do! I will take care of riding the 100
miles on June 25th. Thank you!

Hi C2,

You can apply an XSLT stylesheet automatically on import or export (or
both). The stylesheet file would be part of your custom structured
application. XSLT allows you completely transform your XML, including
changing the order of elements, converting attributes to elements, etc.

Hi Framers,

Our engineering group is giving me an XML file to build a dictionary of
programming commands. I'm still a novice at structured frame and have two
basic question s about using the XML content.

All content is in attribute values. I'm sure I can make certain attributes
visible, apply formatting, and add prefix/suffix. Can I automatically change
the order of the content? They are presenting the definition before the
command word. Can attribute values be pulled in from other elements?

Here is an example:

...

In all commands, I want to print the String value as a heading first, then
follow with ClassDescription as a paragraph, but the order is reversed.
In the CommandParameters element, I want to print the values of the
appropriate EnumList element attributes found in the appropriate element

So above would be something like:

:SYSTem:PRESet:TYPE
Description: Sets the system preset setup type. Outputs the system preset
setup type.
Command Parameters: DEFAULT, SAVED
Query Result Parameters: DEF, SAV
Examples: SYST:PRES:TYPE DEF
Sets the system preset setup type to Default.
SYST:PRES:TYPE?
Outputs the system preset setup type.

Re: [Framers] License update

2022-02-19 Thread rick
CDW is a reputable company. One thing to check: 2019 was available as a
32-bit or 64-bit program. I am not sure of both shipped in the same box, but
you should get the 64-bit version if you want to take advantage of more
memory, etc. Be aware though, that any existing 32-bit plugins that you
might have will not work with the 64-bit version of FrameMaker. ExtendScript
script should still work (all mine do).

Dear Framers,

I am using FrameMaker 2015 and am planning to update too FrameMaker 2019 at
the same time as moving to a new laptop. I would appreciate help with two
questions:

1. I am not interested in a subscription, only in buying a license. I found
no possibility on Adobe's site but one on CDW
(https://www.cdw.com/product/adobe-framemaker-2019-release-license-1-user/52
44308). Can anyone confirm that this source is suitable? The licensing is
not clear from their site (I wrote to them for clarification), so if anyone
has experience with them I will be grateful. The source I used back in 2015
thanks to a tip from this list, Insight
(https://www.insight.com/en_US/shop/product/65292764AD01A00/Adobe/65292764AD
01A00/AdobeFrameMaker(2019Release/)), currently says that the site is under
maintenance.

2. I am not following this email list on a daily basis (I do use FrameMaker
on a daily basis -- it has been my main writing tool since ca. 1998 -- but
it does what I want and I know its quirks), so I apologize if everyone else
knows the answer to my next question: is it a good idea to purchase the 2019
version now, or is there another expected update coming out soon?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Hi, Framers,
I am having a problem with my mouse scrolling in Frame. We are still using
Frame 7.0 and it has been beautifully stable all these years, with a few
quirks like needing a special mouse driver for scrolling. Our IT department
just moved us to Office 365, which nuked all my settings and customizations
in Frame and other apps (they didn't give anyone warning about it). Now my
scrolling in Frame files won't work as it had before the change.

If anyone on the list remembers this problem from long ago, can you tell me
what worked to fix it? One of our IT people installed FreeWheel but that
didn't work.
I'm working remotely to a Windows 10 PC through Jump Desktop on a Mac.

Hope somebody remembers and I can get it resolved. Not being able to scroll
in Frame is driving me crazy! We have been kicking around the idea of
upgrading to the latest version of Frame, but have been hesitant. Thoughts,
anyone?

Hi Rick,

you may try to check with Alex Masycheff (a...@intuillion.com

documentation based on DITA but with ATA as output format (both XML and PDF).

This system is built on DITAToo CMS with a customised Fonto as editor. It could
be adapted to match your requirements, it includes a configuration manager.

Re: [Framers] Aircraft DTDs, schemas, or EDDs

2022-01-27 Thread rick
Hi Ian,

Thank you for your reply. My client actually wants them in XML, but starting
with the SGML DTD might be better than starting from scratch.

I would even be content with obtaining some structured FrameMaker sample
chapters because I could extract the EDDs from them.

Thanks again,
Rick

Hi Rick,
If the manuals are to be published as ATA iSpec2200 SGML, then you will need
to buy/obtain the specification and DTD set from Airlines for America.
https://publications.airlines.org/CommerceProductDetail.aspx?Product=313
Maybe your customer will have copies that they can provide for you?

Unfortunately I no longer have access to any of my previous ATA EDDs and
templates. If SGML is the required output then FDK or ExtendScript will
probably be essential for the AMM. Maybe even the Structure API. Some of the
ATA structures don't play well with FrameMaker objects.

Good luck
Ian

[Framers] FrameMaker manuals available for the cost of shipping

2022-01-18 Thread rick
>From former list mom, Carol Elkins:

I have the original User Guides for Framemaker 5, 5.5, 6, and 7 that I am
willing to give to anyone who is willing to pay the shipping costs. These
are big, heavy books, and shipping will run about $5/book.

I also have a copy of "Advanced Framemaker" written by Kay Ethier, Robert
Kern, Brad Anderson, and Bernard Aschwanden for Frame 7.1.

This is the manual that explains how to set up autonumbering using the
matrix that Bernard provided in his 2008 presentation. This book sells used
on Amazon for $80 and they won't accept any new listings for it. Again, I'm
willing to give it away for S costs.

This is not really a bug but a "feature," at least according to the FrameMaker

This is definitely a bug, or at least a documentation omission, AKA bug, that
needs formal reporting, Someone please report it. Thanks.

Windows 10, 64-bit system. Adobe Framemaker 2019, perpetual license.

Since the cows have come home, I print a FM book to .ps to a watched folder,
and then w/ Acrobat Distiller open and set to the correct joboptions file, I
distill the .ps to a PDF. It has worked like a charm all the way through
yesterday when boom - now the book is distilled to about 93% w/out errors
and then Acrobat Distiller just closes. NO error message, nada, zip, zilch.

I have changed ABSOLUTELY nothing on my system, taken no updates, etc.

I have absolutely NO idea why/how this got started, but I am in desperate
need of getting this figured out because I have a specific joptions file
that I must use for each client book (fonts that must be embedded in the
PDF) and with using the Save As PDF option in FM, how on earth do I apply
the right joboptions?

Any and all help is sincerely appreciated.

Regards,

Subject: [Framers] Graphic Getting Cut Off

Hi All,

We have a mysterious graphic issue. We place a 10x7mm frame to house an
Illustrator (AI) graphic at the beginning of a heading1 with the position at
insertion point and -7pt above baseline. It's been this way for years
without an issue, but now we save as a PDF file and the top half of the
graphic is cut off.

We have an identical heading that was spawned from heading1, named heading0.
This exists for sole purpose of eliminating that heading from the TOC. If we
copy the entire paragraph and then change the heading1 para format to
heading0, the problem goes away (and vice-versa). We have deleted the
heading1 format and respawned it from heading0, and the problem returns.

I'm stumped.

Thanks, C2

Hi Framers,

I'm updating a long-used FM document for accessibility. Using FM 2019's
Table > Convert to Table function, I converted existing formatted paragraphs
with tabbed columns into an actual table.

The conversion correctly applies table title and column header formats. But
it ignores all other paragraph formats, so the entire page-long table is
converted to column header format. I have to reassign the table text format
to the entire table (because it covers the most content), then individually
assign different formats to the cells in which they apply. This takes about
five times as long as it should. There are 16 tables, so you do the math.

FM's conversion approach is illogical and contrary: it applies some other
format to already-formatted content without warning or explanation. Can FM
be made to convert to table keeping all paragraph formats intact?

Thanks,
Karen

Robert, my son checked and could not find an Export or Save As capability for
RTF in InDesign. Do you, or anyone else, know if this is possible?

Peter, the readback of the IDML back into InDesign was fine! My son noted that
the display looked like the original INDD file.

FWIW, I also tried opening the PDF (from InDesign) into Word and discovered
some of the same errors (for example, carriage returns in wrong places in the
text). The only thing I have not tried yet is to output Word or RTF format from
Acrobat Pro ... hmmm.

It is possible that our tech writer (no longer with us, unfortunately) who did
the InDesign work for this document had extra carrier returns in there - which
do not "show" in the PDF or within InDesign, but are present when the PDF (into
Word) and IDML (into Affinity and Designer Pro) are imported!

Since I do not have an InDesign license, I cannot verify this myself ... may
download a trial to check things out myself, but I am not familiar with
InDesign, so this may be slow ...

Hi, Robert!

For whatever reasons, I never needed or wanted to go to Github, until
now!!! Egad!

Now that I’ve seen this, I’m not going to wonder about it. I am sure I’m not
going down this rabbit hole. It reminds me of the scene in the Tom Sawyer movie
I saw as a kid, when the string ran out and the candle died, and I was sure if
I were with Tom and Becky, I'd never get back outside the cave. ;)

But, this peek answers some of my questions about the problems being discussed
here.

The real issues, IMO, is which FrameMaker document properties an author expects
to preserve when converting to another application, and whether the goal is to
return the transformed and modified document perfectly re-interpreted to FM
from the foreign application. Basically, two different universes need to be
preserved - text and objects. Each application describes text and object
properties with different languages and structures. And, just as in human
languages, some ideas don't translate directly. Over FM's lifetime, some later
releases had problems supporting structures from earlier ones. If this stuff
were easy, it wouldn't have taken so long for some seemingly-simple feature
requests to have been honored.

So, in this branch of the thread, I wonder if converting a document to a
competing layout application preserves layout features, does FM or ID text
that's copied and pasted into the converted layout survive well, or is it also
garbled as described? Does RTF work better or worse? Remember that InDesign has
one of the most sophisticated text composition engines. So, perhaps the
competitors don't compute text properties as well, or they lack some comparable
computed properties.

Hi Framers,

I carefully set FM (2019) PDF Setup for Tags for my book. Yet no matter how
I convert to PDF (save as or print), not a single thing appears to be tagged
in the converted PDF when opened in Acrobat DC (2021) with Accessibility
tool(s) on. I tested files individually, and they behave the same way.
Saving PDF settings inside the PDF file doesn't make any difference.
(Bookmark settings in PDF Setup work correctly.)

In comparison, my project's cover page is built in QuarkXPress; without any
human intervention, it was properly tagged when output to PDF.

Documentation is of little use; I can't find anything beyond the basic in
Adobe's, and third parties don't go near FM.

I must be missing something obvious. What else must I do in FM to make tags
be present in the PDF it creates?

Thanks for any insight or resources.

Re: [Framers] Appearance of graphics in the generated PDF [No Classification]

2021-08-09 Thread rick
That might be worth exploring. I did find a word add-on that converts all
equations to images. If the image quality can be controlled on export from
Word, this may be the way to go. Or, this may work:

1) Convert equations to images.
2) Convert Word to PDF.
3) Extract images from the PDF.

Re: [Framers] Appearance of graphics in the generated PDF

2021-08-06 Thread rick
Here is a summary of the issue:

Equations originate from the client in MS Word.

Tammy wants to save the equations as images for import into FrameMaker.

The fastest way to do this is to save the Word file as HTML because it
rasterizes the equations as PNG files for inclusion in the HTML. The problem
is that the resolution of these rasterized PNG files is 96 dpi, which is
suitable for the web, but not for print. We can't see a way to increase the
resolution in the Word rasterization process.

[Framers] Wanted: generated file case study

2021-07-17 Thread rick
Hello Framers,

While FrameMaker generated files are useful, there are limitations to what
you can produce with the built-in features. For example, you can't pick up
variables and data from master pages. And you can't present information in
non-document order or in tables. I have solved these problems for clients
using simple ExtendScript scripts and some structured FrameMaker features,
even in unstructured books.

I am looking to putting together a case study and a webinar to demonstrate
some examples of complex generated files. I need a good document set and an
example of what you would like to present as a generated file from the data.
The document set needs to be something that I can show to others. In
exchange for a good document set and permission to use it in a case study, I
will give you the scripts to produce the generated file for free. Thank you
very much.

Re: [Framers] Regular Expressions

Regular expressions are so useful in a lot of different contexts, including
FrameMaker, ExtendScript, XSLT, Notepad++, etc. I just did an ExtendScript
job this morning that uses regular expressions to parse out comma-separated
text. Once I figured out the regular expression pattern, the rest of it was
easy. Thanks for posting the link.

It has a really nice summary of the regular expressions syntax - click

Note that in FrameMaker, the regular expression A-Z finds lowercase
letters also, unless you select Consider Case.

Re: [Framers] A bizarre cross-reference issue

2021-04-22 Thread rick
How is your Link character format set up? Is the Position property set to As
Is? If not, that may be the issue.

Instead of applying two character formats, I would suggest that you make a
single character format called SuperscriptLink (or something like that) that
has both the superscript position and your link color. This should be more
reliable than applying two separate character formats to the number.

Subject: [Framers] A bizarre cross-reference issue

I am writing a scientific principles guides that is heavily referenced, and
I do mean heavily . (Like to the tune of over 400 references.)

I have two x-reference formats for this:

Reference, <$paranumonly>,

Reference <$paranumonly>

After writing for a bit (and saving frequently), I decide to update the book
file. I use Edit > Update Book, and in the Update Book dialog, everything
(and I do mean everything, cross-references included) is selected for
update. I get absolutely no errors after updating but EVERY SINGLE
cross-reference that uses either of the above formats loses its superscript
formatting. Blam. .. they are all in line and of the same font size as an
ordinary line of body text.

I have to go into each and every file and select Edit > Update References
with Cross-References selected and then and only then do the references go
back to superscript.

I am at a total loss for why this is happening and the real kicker is that
this just started happening last week. Until then, same book, same template,
same bat channel, same bat time, and I could do a simple Edit > Update Book
and everything was just peachy.

Needless to say, this is a big PITA, and very time-consuming. If anybody has
any ideas/thoughts, can commiserate, and offer a solution other than
drinking heavily at the end of a long day of writing, I would most
appreciate it.

Re: [Framers] Processing time

2021-03-29 Thread rick
Starting with FrameMaker 2019, FrameMaker is 64-bit so you can throw more
RAM at it. I suggest 32 Gb at a minimum. There is also a faster PDF engine
starting with 2019. To be sure that it will improve your process, you may
want to download and install the latest trial and see what kind of
improvements you get.

Whenever I publish to HTML or save to PDF, FrameMaker takes longer than I'd
like. Waiting on Frame to finish processing is slowing down my productivity

What's the best way to tackle this issue? More RAM? A faster CPU?
Something else?

I'm running FM 2017 on the following:

64-bit Windows 10 Pro version 20H2
Intel i5-7500 CPU @ 3.40 GHz

Rick -

There is 5pt right cell padding. The Table Designer window is shown at the
link, and the table cells have 3pt Top/Bottom, and 5pt Left/Right. I've
changed it to a larger number, with no luck.

The Anchored Frame properties are Below Current Line, Right Alignment.

We are using a defined Object Tag for these frames, and the weird thing is
that this is only happening to some of them, not all.

Re: [Framers] Anchored Frames in MIF

2020-12-18 Thread rick
The easiest way to do this is to create a blank Portrait document, insert an
anchored frame with the desired settings, save it as MIF, and open it with a
text editor. Then you can find what you need for the replacement text.

Alternatively, you could do this with ExtendScript in the FrameMaker
interface.

Re: [Framers] Oh for the Good Old Days

2020-10-05 Thread rick
It seems like most software programs have a "golden version" before feature
bloat or performance decline. For me, FrameMaker 8 was that version. Good
performance, especially with FrameScript and acceptable Unicode support.
Don't get me wrong, there are some things to like about recent versions, but
I loved the simplicity of the pre-Adobe interface.

Subject: [Framers] Oh for the Good Old Days

Hello Framers

The last time I used FrameMaker in anger (to typeset a book) was six years
ago. I did it in FrameMaker 7 for Mac, under Classic, on a 2003 Apple Mac.

Just recently I fired up FrameMaker 12 (the most recent version I have or
ever will have) to typeset a simple document. Oh my, what a hassle! Try as I
would I could not get paragraph formats to 'stick', or to override paragraph
formats that the app seemed to have unilaterally invented for itself. Even
importing formats from a 'good' document didn't work. And now that my
eyesight is poorer, I searched in vain for a setting to make the text in
pods bigger. Or a way to get them to stay on the left side of the screen, as
I'm left-handed.

This is absolutely not a request for assistance, just a howl of regret for
what was. I took FrameMaker 7 on Mac to the level of setting up a
semi-automated structured writing environment for a team of authors, the
documentation for which ran to 70+ pages. I am heartily glad I don't have to
do anything like that in a current version. (And yes I know that FrameMaker
12 is far from current, but from what I've read here things are little
better now.)

Subject: [Framers] X-ref issue: FM links that work in the FM file but don't
work in the PDF file that is generated from it

Greetings,
A cross-reference problem has cropped up in FM-to-PDF generation.
Links that work in an FM file (i.e., when you double click on a link,
clicking the resulting "Go to Source" button jumps you to the correct
source) do NOT always work when the file is converted to PDF.
This means that to check the validity of x-refs, you cannot rely on the FM
file but have to search the PDF file.
(Needless to say, this is extremely tedious...) I suspect that the
phenomenon is caused by a combination of conditional text and X-ref markers

Subject: [Framers] Problem with Creating Tables with different TableTitles
in FM via MIF file.

HI All,
I'm trying to create a simple MIF file that contains tables and can be read
via FM.
I need this structure for my engineers, so that they can export data in a
pre-defined table format.

So I have the structure of the table (basically copied the structure given
by one of FM's Sample MIF files (included with the FM installation)).
In any case. Then I actually read the MIF manual and was able to create the
table and a short body page by creating 2 MIF files.
 - One MIF file is used as the template file with all my
paras/chars/tables/variables/master pages/ etc defined. (It's very long)
 - The other MIF file includes for now, one table (it will include all the
tables in the Tbls) and the Text Flow. The table is built basically from a
table header and body rows. It has an "include ( template.mif) to call the
template file (so that this MIF file is "only" about 300 lines long and easy
for my developer to follows its syntax so that s/he can auto generate tables
from their database into FM - and the developer doesn't have to deal with
unnecessary defs). This will be used to create all the ")
and then define exceptions to the Table Format by giving the statement name
for the specific property and then redefining it. i.e. create a local
definition (instantiation) based on the Table catalog definition. (The MIF
manual gives an example of redefining the number of columns and then
adjusting their width - there is nothing about the table title property).
For some reason this does not work with the TableTitle. Any ideas why not?

Thanks so much,
Orly Zimmerman

Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] FrameMaker 11 - blank pages appearing at the end of imported file

2020-04-16 Thread Rick Quatro
Here are the rules that FrameMaker uses for automatic page deletion:

1) Only empty pages that have default master pages applied (Left/Right) at the
end of the document will be deleted. By "empty" I mean no text in the
document's main flow.

2) If the page count is set to even, only empty pages beyond the last even page
are deleted, which means that you may end up with an empty, even-numbered last
page.

Here are things that will prevent pages from being automatically deleted:

1) Any empty pages up to and including any pages that have custom master pages
applied will not be deleted.

2) Any empty pages that have any non-master page items on them will not be
deleted. This includes non-main flow text frames, graphic objects, etc. that
are directly on the page.

Sometimes that is not enough. If you still have empty pages, in the top ribbon,
click Special. In the drop down, click Delete pages..., and then enter the page
number(s) to delete. That has always worked for me.

Check your pagination. If you have it set to an even number of pages and your
text ends on an odd number, FM inserts a blank page at the end.

Format > Page Layout > Pagination > Before Saving & Printing drop-down. If it's
set to "Make Page Count Even", there's your culprit.

Hi Rick,

Although it is unlikely that I will have any more Framemaker projects to do,
I'd like to have your ImportSelectedFormats script. I had Bruce's original
script, and then your 2012 ImportFormatsSpecial, But this new scripts looks
like a great improvement. Thanks for your generosity in offering this script
to support cancer research.

And if you have anyone needing Framemaker help FOR FREE, please let me know.
Working in Framemaker has been the solution to keeping my brain happy. Right
now, I'm making face masks 8 hours a day, but hopefully that will not last
forever.

Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] ANN: Ride for Roswell and FrameMaker Automation

Hi Tom,

How about my ImportFormatsSpecial? It allows you to import User Variables and
not System Variables (and vise versa). This allows you to import User Variables
into your documents without clobbering existing System Variables like Running
Header/Footer variables.

See http://www.frameexpert.com/store/

Thanks,

Rick,

I can think of a script that would be useful (and you might have already
thought of it).

Every time I do a revision I use the rename book components that you did for me
to save tons of time. However, I still have to go through are revise the
headers. Normally, I change the header (includes document number) in one
chapter, then select all of the other parts of the document and import variable
definitions. This works, but I still have to go back to restore the running H/F
for the preface, TOC, and Glossaries (each of which has a separate paragraph
tag). If there was a script that integrated all of that into one, or at least a
way to import variable definitions while ignoring those that have running
headers that are different from the source document, that could also be quite
useful.

Subject: [Framers] Best way to import/add select paragraph formats?

Hello,

More and more, the tech writing team I'm on needs to important just specific
Character Formats and Paragraph Formats into a file or set of files.

Searching through the archives, I found the method below suggested by Fred
Ritter.
<https://www.mail-archive.com/framers@lists.frameusers.com/msg55885.html>
Is this still the best way to accomplish this goal, or does anyone know of a
better method or tool that's been discovered or developed in the meantime?

Many thanks in advance!

Fred Ridder's technique:

1) Copy any paragraph of the desired format from the source file.
2) Paste it into the target file.
3) Use the Paragraph Designer to add the paragraph format to the current
file's catalog.
4) Delete the pasted paragraph.

Stay well,

In my EDD, I have an element named 'mainhead' that I would like to apply
different paragraph tags to depending on the context of the 'mainhead'
element.

What do I need to do in order to do this?

Re: [Framers] MadCap Flare

2020-02-28 Thread Rick Quatro
I am a fan of an approach that separates content development from web
design. A writer/editor develops content and a web designer designs the web
pages, css, etc. In my opinion, these are two vastly different skill sets.
Sure, some can do both, but designing responsive sites that will work with
desktops, tablets, and phones takes a deeper level of skill than just
learning a tool like Flare or FrameMaker.

Sadly, IMHO, not enough attention is given to the quality of content on most
Web sites today. That is the part of Web design that you will excel at, Ken,
because you are a tech writer. I firmly believe that good Web design must
start with usability and audience consideration to develop the content. Once
you figure out all of that for the Web site, then you can focus on coding it
in Flare. Work one piece of the challenge at a time.

Ditto what Mike said. The ONLY reason I'm still sticking with Frame12 is
because I have no need for structured documents and there haven't been
enough non-structure improvements since FM12 to justify the cost of
upgrading. Yes, some would-be-nice-to-haves, but nothing worth the price.
The strength of FM is that I can still make it jump through serious
advanced-level hoops despite its age. It just may take a bit longer. Same
thing applies to me, too.

Re: [Framers] FM2019 Volume and Chapter Numbering

2020-01-04 Thread Rick Quatro
The only thing I would add is to expand on David's mention of explicit
"resetters" for each format in the series:

Chapter H:<$chapnum>< =0>< =0>< =0>
H1H:<$chapnum>.< =0>< =0>
H2H:<$chapnum>..< =0>
H3H:<$chapnum>...

While these aren't functionally necessary--FrameMaker will reset the numbers
below automatically--I find them useful for documentation purposes. For
example, when I look at the autonumber format for any of these paragraphs, I
know right away that there are 4 related formats in the H series.

It also gives you flexibility to add more formats to the series. For
example, let's say you wanted to add figures and tables to the series and
want them to number independently of each other (Table 1-1, Figure 1-1,
etc.). Now, your series would look like this:

Chapter H:<$chapnum>< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>
H1H:<$chapnum>.< =0>< =0>< >< >
H2H:<$chapnum>..< =0>< >< >
H3H:<$chapnum>...< >< >
Table H:<$chapnum>< >< >< >-< >
Figure H:<$chapnum>< >< >< >< >-< n+>

Subject: [Framers] FM2019 Volume and Chapter Numbering

My method/two cents...

You can put the chapters in a book as usual. You can put those books in a
master book to control the volume numbers--or if you just have a few volumes
you can set volume number manually in each book.

You can include the volume number where ever you want--such as x-refs, table
titles, figure captions--by entering the volume code. (The same applies to
the chapter number and the chapnum code.)

Volume<$volnum> []
Chapter H:<$chapnum> []
(technically, the "H:" is not necessary in the Chapter style,
but I like to keep the
chapter and heading number formatting consistent.)
H1* H:<$chapnum>. []
H2H:<$chapnum>.. []
H3H:<$chapnum>... []

*You have your first H1 head as 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc. Usually, this would be
1.1, 2.1, 3.1, etc. as it is the first H1 tag. However, if you REALLY want
the first H1 to be 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc., you will need two styles:
First use: H:<$chapnum>. or H:<$chapnum>.
Following uses: H:<$chapnum>.
(Note: this can be handled automatically in the EDD if document is
structured.)

The and process continues for as many headings as you want. The
book files needs the numbering set to your preference. (The "H:" letter is
flexible but should have the same letter on all the headings.) Here is a
reference PDF for setting up book numbering and pagination:
http://www.ideastraining.com/PDFs/SettingFrameBookNumberingFrame.pdf

Other Notes:
Some people like to put all the place holders in each style and to set the
starting point as zero. It would look like this:
Chapter H:<$chapnum>< =0>< =0>< =0> []
H1* H:<$chapnum>.< >< > []
In my experience, both are these are unnecessary for typical Frame books.

2) I followed your explanation of advanced numbering that you sent to me

you mind if I packaged up a part of my book and send to you to see what I'm

Take a look at my TextFormatter script. You will have to set up a character
format for each of the colors you want to apply. You fill in a table with
your word/character format pairs and you can specify any paragraph formats
that you want to skip. Actually, in your case, it may be better to specify
the paragraph formats that you want to process. If you are interested, I may
be able to add this as an enhancement.

HI All, I have a document in Markdown (md) that I was asked to convert to FM.
I can do it quickly using wildcards, regexs and scripts.
All is fine and good, except when I get to source code. The source code is
formatted extremely nicely and clearly (with different colors for commands,
comments, etc and also with code line numbers) in the MD file. I can't come
close to it in FM without using a fair share of different, newly created para
and char tags, etc. This is extremely frustrating because I can take the text
and simply plunk it into Notepad++ and it gets formatted properly depending on
the language I choose. Perhaps there is a secret setting somewhere in FM, that
FM can read this code and understand how to format it? and save me loads of
time. I prefer not creating a JPG or BMP of the code - because then the info
won't be searchable in the PDF. Many Thanks for any ideas :)Happy New Year!Orly

Re: [Framers] Backup in different folder?

2019-12-18 Thread Rick Quatro
That's why I will sometimes do free demos or prototypes or short videos of a
similar script. Some managers have no clue about the bottlenecks that
writers/editors run into, but when they see something take 30 seconds that used
to take all week, they suddenly get interested.

I've worked for many a "penny wise and pound foolish" employer over the years...

Speaking for myself, I say lazy and hard-headed. I can't stand doing "monkey
work." Automation has made work more tolerable and efficient for clients and
me. When a potential client tells me that they can't spend money on scripts,
I wonder if their managers know how much time and accuracy is lost through
doing repetitive tasks manually.

Lin, this proves that not only is FM really smart, but the FM community is
brilliantly self-correcting! ;)
