not in the pic, but I now have a nice light source (though no UV, just
dusting his roaches with Rep-Cal Vit D3 Ca for the next ~ 4 months he'll be
in there. As for air circulation, I have a 3x16 vent along the bottom of
one side and top of the other side. This creates a nice airflow as warm air
rises out the top vent, it draws in air from the bottom vent, and yet the
humidity doesn't seem to be too adversely affected. I have this same basic
principle at work in my big viv, and love the results. I've heard it called
European style ventilation since many of the Dutch and German vivs use it.

[gecko]50 gallon Sterilite tub vivarium

2005-05-26 Thread Jared Morris
So, I just got two ~ eight month old female Uroplatus henkeli. I figured
they'd be old enough to put with my adult male. Plus, male henks are not
known to be the randiest lizards, so I guessed he wouldn't even notice them
for a while. I guessed wrong. I put the females in during the day, and they
went right to sleep, no problems. That night, however, my male zeroed on
the first move one of those females made, and after she acknowledged his
presence, he started twitching his tail so violently his whole body and the
branch he was on shook. He charged her, and she only narowly escaped a
brutal mating attempt . The other female had the same harrowing experience.
I guess if I hadn't seen a female of my species my entire life (at least my
captive life) I'd probably be ready for some action too.

needless to say, I had to remove him. Unfortunately I was a bad herper, and
had no suitable cage prepared, and so he went into a spartan 20 gal setup.
My solution was a 50 gallon Sterilite container. This cage cost all of
about $30.

Good temporary set-up! Get him out of there soon though, they don't do
well in sterlite (personal experience!).

Hi Jared,

Sure, I put some U. sikorae and U. lineatus in there as temp. caging and
they started dying- I did find some mold. They just did not like it as
well as glass or screen type terraria.

I wonder how spacious and/or naturalistic yours were? Not that I doubt that
they went downhill, or your experience or expertise, but it seems glass
/plastic/wood/screen are all the same to a gecko: walls which contain them.
Not to be negative or anything, I'm just saying...

Hey Jared,

They were pretty basic, 40-50 gallons with a bunch of airholes. Light
and air circulation were certainly factors in the demise of my geckos!
