   The artist/title info is in the id4 tags - you can edit them with lots

   And recoding: mp3 is a lossy format. If you turn them into wavs you

 I don't know how to fix it. But is it really so important? Do you watch the

to fix timing there is script Mp3Fixer for amarok

Mp3Fixer (v0.9.4)
About:
Mp3Fixer is a script for repairing MP3 files which display a bogus track
length or bitrate in your audio player.
For example, if you have a track that you know is really five minutes long,
but amaroK shows the length as one hour, then this script is for you.
Mp3Fixer calculates the real track length and adds the missing XING header to
the file. Additionally, Mp3Fixer is capable of repairing broken MPEG header
frames.

Re: [gentoo-user] boot stalls at 'mounting local file systems'

2006-08-01 Thread Martins Steinbergs
Hi, thanks for response. I dont have anything related to ldap. But booting
older kernel did the trick.

Martins

 If you are using ldap, it can cause long delays for things that occur
 before networking is active when something tries to lookup a user from
 the ldap server, but times out.

 So far I've heard of this affecting bootmisc, udev, and now
 localmount. There are some workarounds listed in this bug:

 http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99564

 Basically, downgrading the version of ldap or or changing the ldap
 configuration seems to fix it for most people.

 In your case, it is probably this part of localmount that is causing
 the problem:

 if [[ -n ${usbfs} ]]  \
[[ -e /proc/bus/usb  ! -e /proc/bus/usb/devices ]]
 then
 ebegin Mounting USB device filesystem (${usbfs})
 usbgid=$(echo $(getent group usb) | awk -F: '{print $3}')
 mount -t ${usbfs} usbfs /proc/bus/usb \
 ${usbgid:+-o devmode=0664,devgid=${usbgid}}
 eend $? Failed to mount USB device filesystem
 fi

 This tries to do a lookup of the 'usb' group.

 If it does indeed turn out to be an ldap issue, add a comment to the
 linked bug or at least let me know and I'll do it.

 there too. What does your whole auth_default {} look like?

  (Everthing between opening and closing brackets)

 Here, the whole thing minus the comments is:

 auth default {
   mechanisms = plain
   passdb pam {
 args = *
   }

  userdb passwd {
   }
   user = root
 }

 I don't know how much of that is needed. I wouldn't care if pam was
 bypassed too but not sure if it would work then.

i have very the same lines

 So, it looks to me as though we must do a manual install if we want

 Does anyone have any guidance for doing this with as little hassle

[gentoo-user] how to check dependencies for sloted apps?

2006-05-17 Thread Martins Steinbergs
hi,

I decided to clean my Gentoo install and I started with
'emerge --prune --pretend'
what gave me some list of apps. Then I did equery depends pkgname for each
package, but problem is with sloted ones such as gtkhtml, autoconf, db and a
lot from Gnome tree.
How to specify (syntax) package version to search for with 'equery depends' if
this is suported?

qdepends gives me this output, I cant understand is this broken or both
versions are needed by php, xorg and kmail?

mar martins # qdepends -Q gtkhtml-1.1.10-r1
depends: i'm such a fatty, could not
eat_file(/var/db/pkg/dev-lang/php-5.1.4/DEPEND)
depends: i'm such a fatty, could not
eat_file(/var/db/pkg/x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1/DEPEND)
depends: i'm such a fatty, could not
eat_file(/var/db/pkg/kde-base/kmail-3.5.2-r3/DEPEND)

mar martins # qdepends -Q gtkhtml-3.10.1
depends: i'm such a fatty, could not
eat_file(/var/db/pkg/dev-lang/php-5.1.4/DEPEND)
depends: i'm such a fatty, could not

depends: i'm such a fatty, could not
eat_file(/var/db/pkg/kde-base/kmail-3.5.2-r3/DEPEND)

I'll be glad to see your input. Maybe out there is some better script?

[gentoo-user] remote access to emails

Hi,

Can you hint me on this? I have setup reading emails following way - fetchmail
gathers emails from 3 servers to ~/.maildir then using Kmail i read them and
all messages are stored under ~/Mail in maildir format.
All I want is remote acces to messages in ~/.maildir and ~/Mail . I was trying
VNCclient but due to slow network it isnt acceptible. Now I'm trying to setup
etpan but I got segmentation fault when trying to add storage in ~/Mail tree.
So, I would like to know what console mail reader will work for this kind of
setup? Can I acomplish this with setting up webmail or what is your setup
design to read emails and accesss them remotely.

I run gentoo ~amd64. Remote boxes are windows.

 machines. This network does not run any DNS, and it works beautifully, very
 low in bandwidth, all static IPs. I do not wish to argue about the merits
 of not running DNS on a network, it's a given, out of my control!

 I installed Jffnms on a server, along with the other required software:
 apache2, php4, postgresql etc etc as describe in this document:

 http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/jffnms.xml

 I can find the main setup pages in the
 /var/www/localhost/htdocs/htdocs/admin/ dir from the command line:
 menu.php sat_session.inc.php
 calendar.php  menu_frame.php   satellite.php
 color_select.php  menu_interface_list.php  setup.php

 http://192.168.2.9/ pops up the usually apache2 default page

 But I cannot get to the
 /var/www/localhost/htdocs/htdocs/admin/setup.php page, from a web browser
 running on neither the server, nor anywhere on the network. The default
 apache2 page does pop up on a web browser from any machine on
 the network, including the apache2 server.

 This is probably really simple. Bear in mind that I'm far, far
 from a whiz with apache et.al. being more of a 'hardware type'.

 are the repeated htdocs/htdocs dirs the problem?

 What's wrong or what do I need to tryto get this to work.?

 James

check permissions on those directories and files, if that the case, then
change 'apache' can read, and for setup time give write access too to config
files.

 Hi folks,

 this is about Powerpoint Presentations and Gentoo and (almost) any other
 linux distribution. There are two different types of presentations: *.ppt
 and *.pps. The difference is that *.pps have an interpreter linked into the
 document so you can run it under Windows without having Powerpoint.

 *.ppt do not cause any problems but *.pps do. If you do a file
 something.pps it reports it as Microsoft Office Document without
 qualifying what kind of document.

 As long as you have set all your file associations of Microsoft documents
 to OpenOffice, it will work for you because OO still is a monolithic
 application that handles all of them.

 This is not true if you have set file associations of Microsoft documents
 to specific applications in any other office suite, including but not
 limited to koffice. In the case of koffice, kword gets started, It starts
 to load the presentation and decides correctly that this isn't a word
 document.

 So my question is: Aren't there any mime type and/or magic file experts
 here that can extent the magic file to recognise *.pps files correctly?

 Would be great if we could get that sorted out.

 I tried myself. Unfortunately, I am not a magic file expert and failed
 badly. :-(

most simple solution i can give is to rename file.pps to file.ppt

 I presented this problem on the forums and have made no head way so I

 I am going to ask a real stupid question here so bear with me.

 I currently have mysql 5.0.18 installed and am trying to upgrade to
 the slotted version 5.0.18-r30. I am following the upgrade guide found
 at:

 http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/mysql-upgrade-slotted.xml

 I am having trouble at step 3

 Important: If you are upgrading between version revisions (ie.
 dev-db/mysql-5.0.18 to dev-db/mysql-5.0.18-r30), you can simply stop
 the database, move from one data directry to the other, and restart
 the server. This allows you to skip this section entirely.

 Can somebody please tell me how I move from one data directry to the
 other. I am not quite sure what that means or how to do it. Thanks.

 Somebody on the forums asked if I copied the contents of
 /var/lib/mysql to /var/lib/mysql-500.  I tried this but then mysql-500
 failed to start like the procedure said. The error I got in the log
 was;

 In the /var/log/mysql-500/mysqld.err

 060205 13:01:32 [Warning] No argument was provided to --log-bin, and
 --log-bin-index was not used; so replication may break when this MySQL
 server acts as a master and has his hostname changed!! Please use
 '--log-bin=host-bin' to avoid this problem.
 /usr/sbin/mysqld-500: File './host-bin.index' not found (Errcode: 13)
 060205 13:01:32 [ERROR] Aborting

 060205 13:01:32 [Note] /usr/sbin/mysqld-500: Shutdown complete

 So now where do I go and what do I do? I will add the host-bin.index
 file is in the directory.

  Thanks for any help.

 Kirby

you need to rename /etc/mysql to something like /etc/mysql-999 or delete if
you are going to unmerge 5.0.18
then use eselect mysql to set your desired version
check my.cnf is it to your likings and /etc/conf.d/mysql points to correct
version at mycnf=
start server

few weeks ago here was email about sloted mysql explaining all

en_GB.UTF-8/UTF-8
lv_LV
lv_LV/ISO-8859-13

is there all correct?

now when i try rebuild glibc:

  What is your expierence, any sugestion where to look.

 My experience is that the xine engine is _by far_ the best sounding
 engine available in amarok.

 It might be interesting to diff
 ~/.kde3.5/share/apps/amarok/xine-config with ~/.xine/config,
 particularly for the alsa devices in use. Actually, I think you can
 just copy the ~/.xine/config to the amarok directory to make sure you
 are using the same xine configuration for both.

  i have alsa on
  00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
  VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)

 The exact model of the controller chip might be useful here. From the
 .confs in /usr/share/alsa/cards, I gather that the 8233 and 8237 do
 hardware mixing, while the 8233A does not, and enables dmix/dsnoop by
 default.

 If you have the 8233 or 8237, I might try forcing the use of dmix by
 default in your ~/.asoundrc to see if it makes a difference:

 pcm.!default {
 type plug
 slave.pcm dmixer
 }
 pcm.dmixer {
 type dmix
 ipc_key 1024
 slave {
 pcm hw:0,0
 period_time 0
 period_size 1024
 buffer_size 4096
 rate 44100
 }
 bindings {
 0 0
 1 1
 }
 }
 ctl.dmixer {
 type hw
 card 0
 }

 -Richard

Thanks, great to know I was wasting time with wrong xine config file :)
however, just before your message i recompiled amarok without gstreamer suport
and problem has gone, hope forever cause I'd like to keep this app.

[gentoo-user] booting fsck

2006-01-07 Thread Martins Steinbergs
i have issue with booting and dont know where to start fix things. so i have
working kernel, everthing fine, then i copy config to new one and compile
without changes. booting that new one kernel there is some action with udev
rules and it takes bit longer than with nice kernel, dont have log on that.
After that there is some weird action with ext3 partition fsck, log shows
ReiserFS: hdb9: warning: sh-2021: reiserfs_fill_super: can not find reiserfs
on hdb9
thats ok, there is no reisefs, but ext3

then boot interrupts cause fails to fsck, asks for root passwd, probably
because partitions is already mounted.
if i continue to boot, fails networks setup but xorg and KDE starts ok,
however with problems, for example launching fglrxinfo never exits

can somebody point me where to look, kernel, udev, init scripts, ...? probably
due to lack of good english i cant hit good google link

 So, you do NOT have a router? Then keep dhcp. If your ISP has assigned you
 a static IP, then you should ask them for specifics. Most do not assign
 static IP though. Sorry I could not help more. I use a router and each PC
 is assigned a specific IP within the local net. However, the ROUTER gets
 the Dynamic IP from our ISP.

 Sorry I could not help more. dhcp is really great!

for static generaly there is needed only 2 sections in /etc/conf.d/net
config_eth0 with static ip, netmask and brodcast
routes_eth0 with gateway ip

no need for dhcp, see net.example

 `ffmpeg` produces some help info, but then
 -vcodec codec force video codec ('copy' to copy stream)
 doesn't say what the actual codecs are...

hit plain 'ffmpeg' without any option and you will get full help

or
ffmpeg -formatsshow available formats, codecs, protocols, ...

or online

by the way, hadn't use ffmpeg for long time and just checked and looks like
mine copy is broken, encodes with quality setting in thousands so its now
good tool to fill the free space on storage, and clock speeds up. will

Re: [gentoo-user] converting any video to mpeg-1, mpeg-4 or DivX-5

2005-12-14 Thread Martins Steinbergs

  I have lots of different types of video files - from short funny ads, to
  1/2 hr tv episodes, to full movies, in all sorts of formats - wmv, avi,
  mpeg, etc.

  I want to find a program (hopefully only 1!) that will help convert them
  to a format playable by the device. I'm happy if thats a command line
  only program. I will probably copy them 1 by 1 as I want to watch them.

 mencoder / transcode

ill bet for ffmpeg

  Space it not too much of an issue (I'll eventually have about 60Gb on
  the device) - I'd rather not lessen the quality any more than it is
  already.

  So, here are my questions:
  1. whats the best format to use out of the ones listed, given
 a) Good quality (not much less than, or the same as original)
 b) Size reasonable - large files ok, but compression is always a
  bonus)

 DivX

try xvid mpeg4 and theres many more with different sources, or google for
codecs and artefacts and stuff like that to pick best.

  2. what program will convert 'anything' to said format.

 See above

  Many thanks for your suggestions.

  DivX-5.x
  Resolution : [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  Bit Rate : 4Mbps
  Audio : MPEG-1 Layer III, AAC, ADPCM
  Format :.AVI ,
  Remark:DivX-3.x/4.x unsupported

 Pick this

converting wmv and other low quality sources with these settings will fill
your fresh device pretty soon. setting bitrate above 1800 kb/s isn't
necessary, almost no gain in quality.

[gentoo-user] LTSP server requirements

2005-12-11 Thread Martins Steinbergs
hi,

I'm considering to setup LTSP server with one terminal (old IBM Pentium 200Mh
RAM32) attached. If i get from windows box one specific dos application and
all data run under dosbox I'll go for LTSP unless there should be expensive
hardware upgrades on server what I'm googling around cant find or info is
sort of outdated. Terminal will launch dosbox, whatever browser to access
bank, OO and some solitare. Server then should be this AMD Athlon 64 / 3200
with 512 RAM, two 30GB and 180GB Maxtor 7,2K rpm ATA drives, 1,2GB swap. Is
this enough for one terminal with server still runing desktop. Somewhere
heard that each terminal takes 100MB RAM, is it true? What else I should take
in account?

 Creative use of head/tail with seed files and already downloaded

 Make sure you use the -P option (read man rsync) e.g. rsync -Pv
 --stats --bwlimit=2 filename . wget has a similar option. BB (Before
 Broadband!) I set this for both wget and rsync in /etc/make.conf. wget
 will usually download faster on high quality connections than rsync, but
 overall, if you have a seed file, rsync wins hands down.

 The bandwidth option is useful if you still want to use the link whilst
 downloading. Both rsync and wget request chunks of the file, then wait
 an amount of time before getting the next chunk. This averages out to
 the required throughput, but some apps did not deal with this very well
 (p[arrallel scp downloads slowed to a crawl for instance, leaving a
 large part of the available bw unused.

 Best bet in this case is to try and find a local person with broadband
 who will download and burn to cd for you. I used to use a modem for
 gentoo for a few years and know what you are up against - but I think
 its worse for the binary distros as I found I was downloading whole CD's
 on a regular basis - and thats a whole lot worse than OO!

just guessing, planning to put old ibm pentium (200Mhz) to do the firewall,
router and printer server job

Re: [gentoo-user] two ati-drivers packages using --deep --update

2005-11-07 Thread Martins Steinbergs

 emerge -p ati-drivers ati-drivers-extra

 These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

 Calculating dependencies ...done!
 [ebuild   R   ] media-video/ati-drivers-8.18.8-r1
 [ebuild   R   ] media-video/ati-drivers-extra-8.18.8

 Do you maybe have a mask on ati-drivers-extra?

 Holly

maybe -amd64 is reason:
- media-video/ati-drivers-extra-8.18.8 (masked by: -amd64 keyword)
