[gentoo-user] How am I supposed to block the KDE update?

2017-03-14 Thread Nikos Chantziaras

Updading to kde-frameworks 5.32 breaks my desktop. So I masked it. Meaning:

  =kde-frameworks/attica-5.32.0
  =kde-frameworks/breeze-icons-5.32.0
  =kde-frameworks/extra-cmake-modules-5.32.0
  # ... and all the rest

in /etc/portage/package.mask/kdeframeworks

That worked for a couple days. Not anymore. Now I can't update my system
anymore, since emerge -uDN @world aborts:

  The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:
   (see "package.unmask" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
  # required by kde-misc/kshutdown-4.0::gentoo[kde]
  # required by @selected
  # required by @world (argument)
  # /etc/portage/package.mask/kde:
  #=kde-frameworks/kdelibs-4.14.29-r1
  #=kde-frameworks/kdelibs-env-4.14.3
  #=kde-frameworks/kf-env-4
  =kde-frameworks/kglobalaccel-5.32.0
  # required by kde-plasma/ksshaskpass-5.9.3::gentoo
  # required by kde-plasma/plasma-meta-5.9.3::gentoo
  # required by @selected
  # required by @world (argument)
  # /etc/portage/package.mask/kde:
  =kde-frameworks/kcoreaddons-5.32.0
  # required by kde-plasma/kdeplasma-addons-5.9.3::gentoo
  # required by kde-plasma/plasma-meta-5.9.3::gentoo
  # required by @selected
  # required by @world (argument)
  # /etc/portage/package.mask/kde:
  =kde-frameworks/kcompletion-5.32.0

(This are just the first lines. The full error output is huge.)

So what am I supposed to do?

I don't get it :-/

Eek. That's not nice. You have masked frameworks-5.32.0 and plasma-5.9.3
packages (presumably you got all of them), and you missed something in
the huge chain that needs one or more of them. More likely, something
else needs that something, and a third something else needs the first
something else.

Yeah, with enough patience you *could* follow the chain all the way down
and mask every last bit that needs masking. That's a lot of work and
you'll undo it in a week when the desktop breakage is fixed :-)

I'd say it's just not worth the effort (unless someone else posts a
proper list they already worked out).

Probably *much* easier to deal with frameworks breaking your desktop in
the first sentence. Would you be OK to deal with that rather than try
the masking route? What's the breakage you mention?

I found I needed the overlay. It greatly simplifies the dependencies. It
still isn't perfect, as changes occur during development, but it's definitely
well worth having.

I've no doubt that after the next overlay update I'll have to add or remove

Oh, and eix-update of the overlay takes huge lengths of time, so I do it
less often than on my main system.

Re: [gentoo-user] KDE and the new plasma 5 thing

2016-04-13 Thread Dale
Howdy,

Same topic sort of so going to try the same thread first. I've run up
on something weird but I'm not real sure where to start looking. This
is what I do and what I get in return. I have my desktop set to folder
view which gives me icons on my desktop. When I click on a folder, it
is supposed to open Konqueror. It does, it really does open konqueror.
It opens it with dozens of instances and more than once went over 100
before I could kill the thing. Obviously, I only need one instance.

My question. What program actually tells it to launch that first
instance? In other words, when I click on a folder, what is it that
tells Konqueror to open? I think I'd like to downgrade that package for
a bit. It seems to have a bug, a really bad one with a lot of legs.

How I got here. Since the plasma thing was crashing so much, I thought
a unstable plasma package might have it fixed. Well, it stopped
crashing after I keyworded a long list of packages and did the upgrade.
Thing is, now I get this multiple instances of Konqueror instead of just
one. Here is a list of those packages.

The file-type icons are still be where they should be, but for some
reason they were no longer associated with their respective
mime types. I've now solved the problem for them by going to the 'file
association' part of system settings and editing the icons for the mime
types which were missing icons.

The program icons which do not show up in the Quicklaunches haven't
changed on my system. They also don't show up in the Kmenu, which uses
the same .desktop files -- I didn't realize that before because I
rarely look at the menu. AFAICS, all the icons that no longer show up
in the menu or the launchers are in /usr/share/pixmaps/. I can use
kmenuedit, which I think edits the .desktop files, to select the icons
which should be displayed, but they're still not displayed.

If you're going to try to dig all the way to the bottom first then
--ignore-world and --ignore-built-slot-operator-deps can be helpful for forcing
it to build what it needs to break a dependency loop. But do be aware that
things may cease to function during the intermediate stages.

If those are not sufficiently strong, then you can climb into the package repo
and start issuing ebuild commands yourself and it will do what it's told
without bothering about checking dependencies at all. Make sure you know what
you're doing...  Obviously...

But seriously, try disabling any overlays first if at all possible. It's quite
common for those to lag behind the main repo and turn things into a tangled
mess.

At this point the jackhammers have gone silent and I'm left with the
issue I had before:

tortoise ~ # emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y world
--verbose --backtrack=40 --changed-deps --verbose-conflicts --pretend
--ignore-built-slot-operator-deps=y

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy
"media-libs/libsdl2[abi_x86_32?,alsa?,custom-cflags?,joystick?,nas?,opengl?,oss?,pulseaudio?,sound?,static-libs?,video?,X?]".

(dependency required by "media-libs/libsdl-1.2.60::poly-c" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "dev-libs/zziplib-0.13.72-r2::gentoo[sdl]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "app-text/texlive-core-2021-r4::gentoo" [installed])
(dependency required by "dev-texlive/texlive-formatsextra-2021::gentoo"
[installed])
(dependency required by
"app-text/docbook-sgml-utils-0.6.14-r5::gentoo[jadetex]" [installed])
(dependency required by "gnome-extra/gnome-color-manager-3.36.0::gentoo"
[installed])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-control-center-43.1::gentoo"
[installed])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-shell-42.5-r2::gentoo"
[installed])
(dependency required by
"gnome-extra/gnome-browser-connector-42.1::gentoo" [ebuild])

tortoise ~ #

I then checked my overlays, and it turns out I had an outrageously
bloated number of layers installed:

tortoise ~ # layman -l

 * poly-c    [Rsync ]
(rsync://rsync.gentoofan.org/poly-c )
 * wichtounet    [Git   ]
(https://github.com/wichtounet/wichtounet-overlay.git )

tortoise ~ #
#

I think one of those was because mainline had stopped maintaining
seamnokey and I needed it maintained. No idea what I was smoking when I
applied the other or even which is which. In all likelyhood I had a
problem and applying that overlay solved it and because I didn't have a
problem after solving said problem, I forgot about it and can't really
say what or even when it was I had that problem. All I have now is this
lingering sense that touching those overlays will result in misery and
suffering so it's best not to even look up how to remove either of them.

eclan still shows a large number of outdated packages on the system so
there is definitely lots of updating to work if I can get emerge out of
its current hissy-fit.
